SUNDAY CLASSES

Conversations Around the Scripture: The Psalms Sundays, 9:30-10:30AM in E105. Do you find the Psalms comforting in times of stress? Are you amazed that the Psalms describe thoughts and feelings you have? Have you wondered how something written years ago can apply to life today? This study examines the ten types of Psalms, why they were written, and how they were used. Discover kindred spirits as you affirm trust in God. Learn how to use the Psalms as guides for writing and praying your own psalms. For information, contact Mollie and Brian Earnhart at 873-2406.

Wednesdays, November 7-December 12 (skipping 11/21), 1-2PM in E105. Putting Faith to Work: A Study of James— Focus on how Christians are called to live out our faith commitment. Lessons explore how faith grows out of trials endured and temptations overcome; how Christians live with integrity in their relationships; the affirmation that faith and good works are inseparable; how to act with gentle, peaceable and caring wisdom and ways to deepen our capacity and strengthen our resolve to do right. Study guides are available in the Oasis Bookstore. Led by Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries.

Spanish Bible Study

Café Conversations Wednesdays now-December 19, 9:30-11AM in E105. Desire of the Everlasting Hills: The World Before and After Jesus by Thomas Cahill is part of the bestselling Hinges of History series where he knits together history, politics, sociology and faith with contemporary insights that yield remarkable results. In Desire of the Everlasting Hills, he shows us Jesus from his birth to his death through the eyes of those who knew him and in the context of his time—a time when the Jews were struggling to maintain their beliefs under those who imposed their worldview on them. Jesus, the loving friend, itinerate preacher and quiet revolutionary, inspires his followers then to journey throughout the Roman world and speak the truth he instilled. Join St. Luke’s Associate Pastor Dr. Marion Miller and discuss the impact Jesus’ message has in our world today. Book available in the Oasis Bookstore.

Tuesdays, November 13, 27 and December 11, 6:30-8PM. This bilingual-style Spanish Bible Class will focus on spiritual growth and development. A bilingual Bible will be provided for each participant. For additional information, please contact Dr. Marion Miller at millerm@stlukesumc. com. Sponsored by the Hispanic Ministry Team. Watch for our Spanish classes coming in January. Registration begins next month.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES

The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.

November at The Track

Our virtue for October is COOPERATION—working together to do more than you can do alone. God can do ANYTHING. There is literally nothing God can’t do. God knows everything and God sees everything, and God is powerful enough to make anything happen. Even though God is completely self-sufficient,

God chooses to work with us. From the beginning, God looked for ways to work with the people God created to accomplish God’s plan. God worked with Noah to build the ark that saved both people and animals. God worked with Moses to bring the Israelites out of slavery. And when Jesus stepped on this planet, worked with friends and disciples to share the message of God’s love with the world. Just like God doesn’t like to work alone, God doesn’t want us to work alone. God wants us to work with others, seek help from others, and be ready to offer help to others. This month’s memory verse helps kids understand: “Two people are better than one. They can help each other in everything they do.” (ECCLESIASTES 4:9)

Kids in Mission Twice a month, Pastor Jamalyn Peigh Williamson will lead Kids in Mission (formerly Mission Possible Kids) where kids will discover new and exciting ways to change the world around them. Open to elementary aged children (K-5th grade), Kids in Mission will meet the 1st and 3rd Sunday evenings from 6-7:15PM in E107/109. Please contact Jamalyn at williamsonj@stlukesumc.com with questions.

Mitten Tree Children’s Ministries will be collecting hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, socks or underwear (sizes infant to teens) for Christamore House beginning November 4. Please place donations by the trees in The Track (East Passage) and in front of Robertson Chapel.

October at the Mini-Track The kids will be learning “God gives me good friends.” Their memory verse is also “Two people are better than one. They can help each other in everything they do.”

Family Fuel Returns November 4 Family Fuel is the service where kids bring their parents to worship! Join us the first Sunday morning of each month at 10:45AM in Robertson Chapel. This worship service is geared towards kids, but designed for families to share a faith experience together. Each month, we focus on one virtue (November is cooperation) that highlights a different aspect of God’s character through singing, dancing, silly skits and games as well as a lesson from God’s Word. Also, each month kids will leave with a cool application tool to help remind them all month of what they learned in Family Fuel. If you would like to get involved behind the scenes of Family Fuel, we are always recruiting hospitality team members or set-up/tear-down helpers. Please email familyfuel@ stlukesumc.com to join the team.

What Did You Say? If you find yourself saying that more frequently than you used to, then stop by the Free Hearing Screening on Sunday, December 2 from 9-11 AM in C110. Hearing loss is one of the most common chronic health care problems facing older adults. More than 55 million Americans are estimated to suffer from hearing loss, and 80% of that group is undiagnosed or untreated. As our population continues to age, the problem of hearing loss continues to grow. Recent studies show that up to 50% of Baby Boomers are experiencing significant hearing loss as much as 20 years earlier in life than prior generations. What about you? Have your hearing checked for free, courtesy of St. Luke’s Health Ministry.

Imagine a place where God is seen and heard through expressions of movement, media, and music—come worship at Later@St. Luke’s on Sunday evenings at 6PM in Robertson Chapel. Hear contemporary Christian, gospel and jazz music featuring the Later Band and Vocals, along with a challenging and thought-provoking message. Holy Communion is served every Sunday, along with light refreshments before and after the worship service.

5th Year @LATER Join us on Sunday, November 11 at 6PM in Robertson Chapel as we take the time to reflect back on what God has done through the pastoral leadership of Dr. Marion Miller at Later@ St. Luke’s over the past five years. One of the finest gospel groups in Indianapolis will be our special guest, the Gospel Temps. Also, Rev. Larry Bates and the Community Lifeline Christian Church will join us for this celebration. Please come and bring your family members and friends. Refreshments will follow in Fellowship Hall.

MEMBER CARE There are many questions that come up after a significant loss such as: • • • •

What now...Grandpa always carved the turkey. Should we get a Christmas tree this year? What about cards? I just wrote the thank-yous. How do I say “yes” or “no” to being included in a holiday party? • Where should I spend the day; I don't want to be a "downer" for others.

Help for the Holidays THE HOLIDAYS...How do we get through them without a loved one? Loss creates many transitions; however, usually none so hard as the holidays. Not only Thanksgiving, Christmas and other holidays, but also anniversaries and birthdays can become traumatic without some forethought and planning. Each one of us has a unique and personal grief journey, but sometimes our questions are similar. With the help of others who have "been there" as well as a video, "Help for the Holidays," you can spend some time thinking about how to navigate these holidays

Grief Support Group It feels like a unique experience when we lose a spouse or significant other at a “younger” age. Very few, if any, of our friends and acquaintances have experienced that kind of loss. While every grief experience is the only one of its kind, we find comfort in those who are facing a similar journey. Young spousal/significant other loss support group (for those under age 50) will be overseen by Rev. Marsha Hutchinson, Grief Ministries leader, and facilitated by Jacki Long-Prah, St. Luke’s member. Jackie is a grief coach and a success trainer. The group will meet each Sunday in November from 23:30PM in the Conference Room (straight past the front desk in the church office, down the hall, past the water fountain and to your left). Attend one meeting or all. Childcare will be available by reservation. Email jackilong@aol.com for information and registration. There are no fees or books.

If you feel called to bring the healing power of God’s love to others, you may be interested in being trained in the Pilgrimage Healing Process, a hands-on-healing modality, and becoming a part of our Healing Ministry. The training includes background of the Process, learning the steps, being both receiver and giver, and a discussion of your roles as healer. Experiencing a healing session in preparation for the training is required. Call 846-3404 x442 to schedule a healing session appointment. Contact Betty Brandt, brandtb@stlukesumc.com, 846-3404 x339, to express interest or ask questions. Training team led by Sandy Clark. Registration required with a $50 deposit by November 9. Total fee of $150 includes training manual, DVD and lunch.

Heaven is a most interesting unknown yet significant concept. There is a renewed interest in pondering and learning about what the Bible, philosophers and various religions have to say about Heaven. If you are well read or opinionated or just curious and would like to share your ideas and listen to the ideas of others, please come and join the conversation beside the fireplace in the Spiritual Life Center. This is a topic that intrigues facilitator Merri Leffel. Wednesday, November 14, 5-6:30PM or Monday, December 10, 5-6:30PM. Registration required; fee is $10.

Balanced Living: Integrating Mind, Body and Spirit Life Coach and Ordained Minister Lisa “Dane” McCullough will facilitate this two-month series using exercises such as journaling, meditation, prayer, music, conscious movement and mindfulness to integrate mind, body and spirit into daily thoughts, words and actions. Wednesday, November 28, 6:30-7:30PM in the Prayer Chapel in Luke’s Lodge. No registration; fee $10/session.

UNITED METHODIST MEN The United Methodist Men is a brotherhood of men, sharpening one another, growing in faith, learning to serve. "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another." (PROVERBS 27:17)

Letters from Dad

Fish Fry Thank You!

This popular program continues three more Thursdays, November 1, 15, 29 from 7-8:30PM. There is nothing to buy, just bring a pen and paper. Come and learn to write the things you have always wanted to say, but didn't know how. Leave treasured letters of love that will be read long after you are gone. Two guys from last year's study have raved about the letters they were able to write: one from son to father that has been read and re-read and another to a future son. This study will not be offered again until 2014. Please let David Williamson know if you can make it, email williamsond@stlukesumc.com.

A big thank you to all of those who helped bread fish, serve chicken, scoop slaw, pour drinks, sell dessert, clean tables, and all 599 of you bought a ticket and helped Haiti! The night was again a big success that raised well over $2,000 for a family in Haiti. That money will go a long way towards building a new home and bringing hope to a place where it is hard to find.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN 2012 Holiday Bazaar

UMW Second Saturday

This year’s UMW Holiday Bazaar will be held on Saturday, November 10, 9AM-4PM. Grab a friend and spend some time shopping. There are over 130 vendors that sell high quality items like jewelry, clothing, holiday decorations, wooden toys, furniture, pottery and artwork. It is one of the largest Holiday Bazaars in the area. You have to come early to get those yummy cinnamon rolls! The baked goods and lunch are out of this world! Best of all: admission is FREE!

Due to the holiday bazaar, our Second Saturday Breakfast will be held Saturday, November 17. What is the UMW Saturday Breakfast? It is an opportunity for women of St. Luke’s to join in fellowship at Hotcakes Emporium on 86th and Ditch. We meet at 9AM. Just look for our sign and join us. It is a great time to meet new friends, hear about what is going on in the various Circles, learn about the various volunteer opportunities of UMW and just talk and laugh. Questions? Contact Sandra Pirkle at skpirkle@indy.rr.com.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: SET UP – November 9, 9AM–6PM: EVENT – Saturday, November 10, 7AM-5PM. If you like to help with, contact Debbie Stevens at 317-3349576 or email dstevens11@indy.rr.com. UMW Reading Group At November's meeting, we'll gather after our Thanksgiving weekends to discuss a product that has a long history of family rivalry—one that "pits idealism against capitalism and religious piety against the forces of greed and cutthroat competition." It's not the Hatfields and the McCoys —it’s the Cadbury, Hershey, Nestle and Mars dynasties—and the product is chocolate! Join us Monday, November 26 from 7-8:30PM in the Parlor as we discuss Chocolate Wars: The 150-Year Rivalry Between the World's Greatest Chocolate Makers, by Deborah Cadbury. We will also be making book selections for the first part of 2013—so bring your suggestions or send them ahead of time. Newcomers are always welcome. Childcare is available with one week's advance notice. For information, contact Jennifer Todd at jtoddosu@aol.com.

relationships where they can get in tune with God's amazing love and be empowered to transform the world!

30-Hour Famine

Pumpkins!

November 9-10. Students around the world loving God and fighting hunger. It’s that simple. Every year, thousands of students unite to do the 30-Hour Famine. They learn about hunger—and then they do something about it. They raise funds. They experience hunger for themselves. Best of all? They help save lives. You can help banish hunger to the history books. This is an overnight activity, but see the options below if staying overnight is not an option for you. The fast will begin at noon on Friday November 9, but we'll meet at the Lodge at 7PM to begin our experiential time together. Saturday we'll spend our day on a work project and return to the Lodge later in the day to break our fast with a meal together at 6PM. Students will be ready to go home or be picked up by 7PM.

We would like to thank you for helping our students through your purchase of pumpkin(s). Each year we have students who use the money earned from unloading pumpkins, working shifts and cleaning up in order to pay for their activities, retreats and mission trips! We are grateful for your purchase, and your prayers.

All students 6th-12th grade are welcome! Students are encouraged to pick up a fundraising packet from the Lodge. Your fundraising packet with any collected donations is your ticket to the event (no further cost). If you do not wish to fundraise, cost is still only $10. Even if you want to raise money, but can't participate in our 30-Hour Famine, envelopes are still available for you to raise money! ••• All students are invited to participate in the experiential time Friday night and our work day on Saturday. However, if students have health concerns about fasting that long, we understand. We are happy to work with students and parents to make this event work for everyone.

Hurricane Relief Donations The youth would like to extend a BIG thank you to everyone who donated money, items and gift cards to our Hurricane Isaac Relief drive for New Orleans. We raised over $2,000, lots of gift cards and a giant pile of donation items. We are so excited to be able to continue supporting the church and community organizations we worked with on last summer’s mission trip in this way. Thanks again on behalf of the organizations and our youth group!

Opportunities are provided for children to learn beginning social skills while having fun. Children must be 10 months old by September 1, 2012 to enroll for the 2012-13 school year.

New Check-In System We’ve launched a new computerized check-in system (CheckPoint) in Children's Ministries. Parents should register their children in this system in The Track area (East Passage). There are computer kiosks located across from the pager desk in The Track, and staff available to assist you. Once registered, the printer will produce a name badge for each child as well as a corresponding badge for the parent to use when picking up their child(ren). Parents who are missing their name badges will only be allowed to pick up their children by obtaining permission of the children's ministry staff. Volunteers will not release a child without a badge. The CheckPoint system will provide a greater level of organization during the check-in procedure, improvement in attendance data, and an increase in the efficiency of our overall administration. But most importantly, the automated system will heighten the overall security of children's ministry and increase parental confidence that each child is as safe as possible while within the walls of St. Luke's UMC.

GREEN MINISTRY Energy Audit Project Has Earned Thousands Through a special program offered by all the energy companies in Indiana, a skilled representative from Energize Indiana will come to your home, do a careful inventory and then leave a report and a box full of energy saving goodies. There is no charge and you are not pressured to buy anything. We have not heard one bad report about this program. The win/win is that St. Luke’s receives $25 for each audit to use in green projects around our facility. Please invite your friends, family and neighbors to take advantage of this opportunity too. Pick up a form in the main office, at the Recycling Center in Central Passage, or online at www.stlukesumc.com. Place the completed form in Betty Brandt’s mailbox. You will receive a call from Energize Indiana to schedule an appointment.

Grief Counseling Sometimes the pain of a significant loss needs the benefit of time before the idea of group support feels right. If you, or someone you know in your family, workplace or neighborhood would benefit from a one-on-one session of grief counseling, contact Rev. Marsha Hutchinson at hutchinsonm@ stlukesumc.com. Wholeness and health is the goal of working through loss; we hope no one considers doing it alone.

Join the fun in serving at Fox Hill. Volunteer opportunities include direct tutoring, mentoring, and administrative help. With winter approaching winter coats (men’s and women’s) are especially needed. Requests for food at Fletcher Place have increased significantly and current supplies are very low. The Food Pantry needs donations of oats, pasta and canned vegetables and fruits (low in sodium and sugar). Bulk quantities are acceptable and appreciated. Any donations can be placed in the drop boxes in the West Passage and be sure to write Fletcher Place on the bags or boxes of items being donated. If your Small Group is interested in providing any of these foods (for instance, fruits), contact Don Cochran at dcochran@cdsins.com.
