Conversations Around the Scripture: The Psalms Sundays, 9:30-10:30AM in E105. Do you find the Psalms comforting in times of stress? Are you amazed that the Psalms describe thoughts and feelings you have? Have you wondered how something written years ago can apply to life today? This study examines the ten types of Psalms, why they were written, and how they were used. Discover kindred spirits as you affirm trust in God. Learn how to use the Psalms as guides for writing and praying your own psalms. For information, contact Mollie and Brian Earnhart at 873-2406. CLASSES & WORKSHOPS See page 7 for information on the Creative Aging “Encore” event

Why Bad Things Happen to Good People Wednesdays thru October 31, 9:30-11AM in E105. Book available in the Oasis. This book, authored by Harold S. Kushner, offers a very moving and humane approach to understanding life's storms. It raises many questions that will challenge your mind and test your faith regarding the ultimate questions of life and death. Kushner, a Jewish rabbi facing his own child's fatal illness, deftly guides us through the inadequacies of the traditional answers to the problem of evil, then provides a uniquely practical and compassionate answer that has appealed to millions of readers across all religious creeds. Remarkable for its intensely relevant real-life examples and its fluid prose, this book cannot go unread by anyone who has ever been troubled by the question, "Why me?" Led by Dr. Marion Miller, St. Luke’s Associate Pastor.

Women’s Bible Study Wednesdays thru October 31, 1-2PM in E105. Religion and Science: Pathways to Truth. More than a dozen world experts consider how religion and science might coexist and even complement one another in the 21st Century. The nine DVD-based lessons include: Friends or Foes? The Story of a Complex Relationship; Truth in Science and Religion; God and Nature; Creation and Evolution; What Does It Mean to Be Human?; The God of Hope and the End of the World; Religion, Science, and Ethics: New Frontiers; and, Creation Care. Led by Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries.

The Second Thousand Years of Christianity Wednesdays thru December 12 (no class 11/21), 7–8:30PM in E105. Pre-registration recommended. Childcare is available upon request. Utilizing material produced by television’s A&E station, study the growth of Christianity from the Crusades and the Reformation to the changes of Vatican II. Each presentation is illuminated through extensive use of historical documents, commentary from renowned scholars, and video visits to the sites where history was made. Led by Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries.

Moses: Calling, Leadership, Following God

Sundays, October 7-28, 11AM-Noon in E213. Moses was called by God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, through the Sinai desert, to the Promised Land. Many would consider him a most unlikely choice for this responsibility, and yet he was called by God to do so. Join with others as we discuss what it means to hear and respond to God’s call in our life; observe the relationship Moses has with God; and glean ways we can strengthen our leadership for home, work, church or civic duties. Led by Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.

October at The Track

SUNDAY CLASSES

Our virtue for October is INDIVIDUALITY—discovering who you are meant to be so you can make a difference. Our God is a unique, one and only God. It only makes sense that everything God created is also unique and one-of-a-kind. The amazing thing about being uniquely created is that you have “good works” that only we can do. Every day we get opportunities to make a difference by doing something specially designed for us. This month’s memory verse teaches kids they don’t have to wait to be used by God to make a difference in the world around them: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young. Set an example for the believers in what you say and in how you live.” (1 TIMOTHY 4:12)

October at the Mini-Track

Kids in Mission

The kids will be learning “God loves me.” Their memory verse is “We have the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles for us!” (2 CHRONICLES 32:8) If Pre-K kids are able to recite the memory verse to the Small Group Leader, they get a special sticker for their Pit Pass.

October 7 is the Kick-Off for Kids in Mission (formerly known as Mission Possible Kids). We will have a Parent/ Student meeting at 5:30PM for the first 30 minutes and then begin our newly named Kids in Mission meeting to end at 7PM. Looking forward to seeing where God will move us this year! Please contact Jamalyn if you have questions at williamsonj@ stlukesumc.com.

Family Fuel Returns October 7 Family Fuel is the service where kids bring their parents to worship! Join us the first Sunday morning of each month at 10:45AM in Robertson Chapel. This worship service is geared towards kids, but designed for families to share a faith experience together. Each month, we focus on one virtue (October is Individuality) that highlights a different aspect of God’s character through singing, dancing, silly skits and games as well as a lesson from God’s Word. Also, each month kids will leave with a cool application tool to help remind them all month of what they learned in Family Fuel. If you would like to get involved behind the scenes of Family Fuel, we are always recruiting hospitality team members or set-up/tear-down helpers. Please email familyfuel@ stlukesumc.com to join the team.

Special Children’s Music On Sunday, October 14, ALL elementary children will be singing “Nothing Could Keep Me From You” in the 9:30AM service. Parents of Summer Splash students will recognize this sweet song from our SKY music CD. We’re excited to partner with the children’s music department to create this opportunity for all children to bless the congregation in this way. Your family won’t want to miss this!

Helping Hands Needed Want to help Children’s Ministries grow? We’d like to form a team of volunteers to support our growth by helping us with creative projects. These projects range from organizational to artistic. If you have some spare time throughout the week, chances are we have a need that could meet your talents and availability.

FAMILY MINISTRIES Help at Fletcher Place

Your Time-Starved Marriage

On October 20, all families are invited to a work day at Fletcher Place from 9AM-1PM. Fletcher Place is a community center for families living in the Fountain Square neighborhood. We will be helping organize new donations for their clothing thrift store and their food pantry. Please contact Jamalyn Peigh Williamson at williamsonj@stlukesumc.com or 8463404 if you are interested in joining us for the day. All ages are welcome—even Jamalyn and Dave's son Nathan will be there—age 4!

After resolving communication meltdowns, finding time together is the number one relational need of most couples. Where does it go? We try to make it. Save it. Seize it. Buy it. And borrow it. Yet time continues to elude too many couples. And we know how the reasoning goes—if you're already time-starved, the last thing you can do is commit an hour each week to a small group experience! Yet this six-week study will be well worth the investment—aside from the friendships you build with other couples, you'll also learn how to identify and mesh your individual "time styles" as well as re-capture the minutes the matter most in your relationship. Small groups are launching the first week of October; contact us at coupleslife@stlukesumc.com to find one that fits your schedule!

FELLOWSHIP Elderberries In order to support the annual Men's Fish Fry on Thursday, October 4, we are changing the regular monthly date for our dinner to October 11 at 5:30PM in Fellowship Hall. We will be playing BINGO with Adra Wheeler calling. Please bring your White Elephants to donate for prizes, a dish to share, and a minimum of $3/per person donation is suggested. First-time visitors do not need to pay or bring a dish. Please make reservations with Adra Wheeler at 253-4914 or 846-3404.

GREEN MINISTRIES Household Chemicals Presentation

You Helped Green Ministry Earn $63.15 in July St. Luke’s gets paid for the paper you bring and place in the green and Yellow Abitibi bins by the east driveway. The earnings for over four tons a month add up—$63.15 for 4.21 tons in July but only $15.35 in June for 3.07 tons. Please help the Green Ministry exceed four tons every month by bringing your white and colored paper, junk mail, newspaper, magazines and catalogs from your home or office. No cardboard or corrugated board. Please do not place paper in the blue Republic bins in NE back parking lot.

Green Gratitude The Green Ministry wishes to thanks the 200 people who have signed up since March 2012 for a Residential Energy Audit. Those people have taken a step to reduce energy consumption in their own homes and learn more about insulation and conservation. In addition, they have earned $25/household to go towards Green projects around our facility. You can join this energy minded group by filling out a form (www.stlukesumc.com, church office and Recycling Center) and putting the completed form in Betty Brandt’s mailbox in the church office. You will be contacted by a representative of Energize Indiana to schedule an appointment. Please ask your family, friends and neighbors to help with us this important project.

HEALTH MINISTRIES Walking Through the Medicare Maze

live

There have been over 81,000 chemicals registered with the EPA since World War II. Fewer than 20% have been tested for toxicity. None have been tested for their health effects when they interact with one another, but that’s how we’re exposed to them. Come find out what’s lurking under your sink and how to keep these chemicals out of your home. Tammy Mutter will present in the Spiritual Life Center, 11AM-Noon on Sunday, October 14 and will be available to answer questions after all services in the West Passage.

Medicare A, Medicare B, Medicare D, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement. What are they and how are they different from one another? How do I choose? When do I choose? If you’ve ever asked yourself any of these questions, you aren’t alone. It’s complicated! If you’d like to learn more about these plans and feel a little more comfortable as you try to decide what to do, please come hear an unbiased overview. No specific insurance plans or carriers will be highlighted, and no one will try to sell you anything. This is an informational gathering. Your presenter is Jim Chesterfield, who became an employee benefits professional after 25 years of buying, implementing and managing benefit programs for companies in Central Indiana. Meets Monday, October 15, 7-8:30PM in E107/109. No registration or fee. Joint project of St. Luke’s Health Ministries and the Spiritual Life Center’s Healing Ministry.

NEW! Grief Support Group

All Saints’ Day Memorial Service and Video

It feels like a unique experience when we lose a spouse or significant other at a “younger” age. Very few, if any, of our friends and acquaintances have experienced that kind of loss. While every grief experience is the only one of its kind, we find comfort in those who are facing a similar journey.

On Thursday, November 1 at 7PM in Robertson Chapel, Rev. Marsha Hutchinson and other staff members will lead a candlelight service to honor those who have gone before and entered into life eternal.

Encore Monday, October 29, 6PM, Parlor. As a follow-up to the three-session class led by Rev. Marsha Hutchinson in September, Creative Aging: Rethinking Retirement and Non-Retirement in a Changing World, you are invited to join other “boomers” for fellowship, group discussion and a catered buffet dinner ($10/person). Questions for open discussion will include, “What do I want to see offered in a community at St. Luke’s that isn’t being offered now? How can I participate in a flexible role of volunteerism or in a group of any kind without that feeling of being tied down? After retirement, how do I become useful to someone or something, but not feel used or taken advantage of?” and many more. Whether you are still working in your full-time or parttime job, whether you have recently “hung it up” and have never looked back, whether you are single, married, or perhaps working through the loss of a spouse, come explore some exciting possibilities for our “encore” years. There are fantastic possibilities ahead just waiting for us to discover. RSVP to hutchinsonm@stlukesumc.com.

A memorial video is an important and meaningful part of this worship service, especially for those families nearing the one-year anniversary of loss. Photographs help us to share, remember and celebrate God’s gift of the precious lives that will always live in our hearts. If you would like your loved one’s photograph (and name) to be included in this year’s memorial video, please email the photo (with his/her name) to forbess@stlukesumc.com by October 15.

envision

Young spousal/significant other loss support group (for those under age 50) will be overseen by Rev. Marsha Hutchinson, Grief Ministries leader, and facilitated by Jacki Long-Prah, St. Luke’s member. Jackie is a grief coach and a success trainer. The group will meet each Sunday in October and November from 2-3:30PM in the Conference Room (straight past the front desk in the church office, down the hall, past the water fountain and to your left). Attend one meeting or all. Childcare will be available by reservation. Email jackilong@aol.com for more information and registration. There are no fees or books to purchase.

If emailing the photo does not work for you, you may bring your photo to the church office or send it by mail to Rev. Marsha Hutchinson, St. Luke’s UMC, 100 W. 86th St., Indianapolis IN 46260.

*NOTE: In addition to the first-year losses, we would be happy to include photos of loved ones from other years past… however… photographs need to have the person’s name to be included this year. Photos from previous videos will not be used as these do not contain names. We hope to see you on November 1 to celebrate the saints, partake of Holy Communion, hear your loved one’s name read as the bell tolls and experience God’s light and love in the faces of those we honor.

YOUTH MINISTRIES Register for any event at www.stlukesumc.com/youth. OUR MISSION: To welcome all youth and families into loving, Christ-centered

relationships where they can get in tune with God's amazing love and be empowered to transform the world!

NEW! Sunday Morning Options: Many of you gave your feedback from our youth ministry survey at the end of the year, and we've listened. Starting this fall we are going to have 9:30 and 11AM options for both Jr. High & High School students. High school will meet in the Lodge at 9:30AM, and Starbucks at 11AM. Our 9:30AM group will work their way through books of the Bible and stories in the Bible with games and discussion, much as they have done in the past. The 11AM Starbucks group will have discussion based around the sermon theme each week. Both students who do attend a church service and those who do not will enjoy these conversations about applying our faith to the world around us. Jr. High will continue to meet at 9:30AM at the Lodge for Confirmation and grades 6-8. They will also have a connecting option that works its way through a fun book or study at 11AM located at the Lodge. See all the times and topics in the Youth Extra section at the back of this publication.

Communication Changes We are trying to maximize efficiency and effectiveness with our communication to teens and parents. Because of this, there are a few changes you should note. 1.) Confirmation parents will receive a weekly email about verses for the week and topics, makeup lessons, service opportunities and ways to connect. 2.) All other Jr. High and High School parents will receive their updates through a monthly parent newsletter that is comprehensive for the upcoming month, not through weekly updates. Our hope is that this way you will have one reference point per month to look at for dates, times and details.

OCTOBER YOUTH EVENTS:

Pumpkin Sales Youth will be unloading a semi-truck of pumpkins in the church parking lot on Wednesday, October 3 after school. Students will be raising money to attend activities, retreats and mission trips. Funds raised will help students serve in Shipibo villages in Peru, Green Bay, WI, Benson Harbor MI, and locally. Keep your eyes open for our pumpkin sales throughout October.

Jr. High Hayride On Saturday, October 27, we will be taking a bus to Russell Farms in Noblesville for a hayride, corn maze, bonfire, s'mores, and games. Meet at the church at 5:30PM and return by 9PM. Cost is $10.

The Track Registration

Classes (9AM-1PM) are offered for children ages 10 months to three years. PDO was established to provide parents of young children time for themselves on a regular basis. Children participate in structured play in a safe and nurturing Christian environment one, two or three days per week. Opportunities are provided for children to learn beginning social skills while having fun. Children must be 10 months old by September 1, 2012 to enroll for the 2012-13 school year.

Have you registered your children for Sunday morning small groups? You can register them online at www.stlukesumc. com/children/sundaymorning. If you have questions, email us at thetrack@stlukesumc.com.

New Check-In System We’ve launched a new computerized check-in system (CheckPoint) in Children's Ministries. Parents should register their children in this system in The Track area (East Passage). There are computer kiosks located across from the pager desk in The Track, and staff available to assist you. Once registered, the printer will produce a name badge for each child as well as a corresponding badge for the parent to use when picking up their child(ren). Parents who are missing their name badges will only be allowed to pick up their children by obtaining permission of the children's ministry staff. Volunteers will not release a child without a badge. The CheckPoint system will provide a greater level of organization during the check-in procedure, improvement in attendance data, and an increase in the efficiency of our overall administration. But most importantly, the automated system will heighten the overall security of children's ministry and increase parental confidence that each child is as safe as possible while within the walls of St. Luke's UMC.

OUTREACH MINISTRIES Fox Hill Elementary Volunteer at Fox Hill Elementary school and experience the joy that so many other St Luke's members have. Your service to the students and faculty at Fox Hill will surely have a huge positive effect on the children you assist, but beware; you are likely to get more than you give. From LUKE 18:16 NIV..."But Jesus called the children to him and said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." Join the fun in serving at Fox Hill. Volunteer opportunities include direct tutoring, mentoring, and administrative help. Complete the volunteer form at www.stlukesumc.com/outreach/community/school or contact Tom Lange at tom.c.lange@gmail.com.

Requests for food at Fletcher Place have increased significantly and current supplies are low. The Food Pantry needs donations of oats, pasta and canned vegetables and fruits (low in sodium and sugar). Bulk quantities are acceptable and appreciated. These can be placed in drop boxes in the West Passage, please write Fletcher Place on the bags or boxes of items being donated. If a group in the church would provide one of the food groups on a regular basis, that would be very helpful. Volunteers are also needed in the thrift store, food pantry and GED preparation. Contact Larry Paxton at 873-2415 or ldpaxton@indy.rr.com, or Karen Mann at Fletcher Place, 636-3466 x4 or karen@fletcherplacecc.org.

Outreach, Inc. Our mission statement is short and simple: "Equipping and empowering homeless teens and young adults to exit street life.” We are requesting donations to purchase bus passes, GED materials, school supplies, text books, lunches, school uniforms, etc. Please make checks out to St. Luke’s and on memo line, list Outreach, Inc. ••• Our G.O.A.L. (Graduation, Occupation, Address, Lifestyle) Program supports at-risk students with a case manager who focuses on specific needs. Homeless students with no support system usually drop out of high school and stay trapped in the cycle of homelessness. Outreach developed a program to help homeless students graduate, get a job and change their life. We provide resources like advocacy, transportation to school, school lunches, textbooks, tutoring, a GED satellite classroom, even caps and gowns, help them find job openings and get transportation to interviews, assist in finding housing and helping with life-skills including budgeting and healthy living. As a result of G.O.A.L., over half of those graduating go on to college, vocational school or military service. For information, contact Jackie Reed at 332-6550 or jsrmolar@sbcglobal.net, or go to www.outreachindiana.org.
