BLACK HISTORY MONTH

BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN- SERVICE MOMENT:

Margaret Charles Smith was the granddaughter of a former slave who as a midwife in the 1940’s helped deliver over 3,500 babies, without one maternal death. Being a black midwife in rural Alabama was not an easy way to earn money. She often had to make her way through fields and wade through water before delivering up to four babies a night. The mothers she attended to were often malnourished and overworked. Yet, she helped them even when if black women had money, local hospitals were not interested in having them as patients. And today, women of color still have the highest maternal mortality rate in the United States and infant mortality rates in the black community are astounding. Over the last few years St. Luke’s has taken steps to help combat infant mortality statistics, by creating Hub for Hope, a place where parents and caregivers can receive diapers, rent and utility assistance, and a connection point for additional services in our community. In 2023 Hub for Hope distributed over 100,000 diapers in our community and through financial and diaper donations, hopes to double that in 2024.

ORDER OF WORSHIP

Welcome | Rev. Rob Fuquay

Opening Hymn | O Worship the King #73 (3vs)

Prayer of Confession / Assurance of Pardon

All: Holy and merciful God, forgive us for the ways we fail to seek your will in our lives. Forgive us for how we turn to our own selfish desires or the ways of the world instead of your Kingdom. Help us to look beyond earthly ways and help your way for this world be realized. Hear us as we bring our own prayers to you...

Leader: Hear the Good news. God hears our prayers and invites us to be part of his Kingdom work here and now. In the name of Jesus you are forgiven.
