When circumstances seem bleakest, when darkness over-shadows hope, and even the heartiest souls sigh with despair, it is into this very world that God’s redeeming light is revealed. “Even the darkness,” the Psalmist reminds us, “is not dark to You, but the night shines as the day, for the darkness is like light to You.” In the fullness of time, God’s immense gift of Jesus was given and grace forever illumined as good news to the world. We hope in today’s musical celebration of Christmas you will hear of this light, this love, and this hope, and we pray the gift of this concert will be a blessing to your heart.
Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love’s pure light; Radiant beams from thy holy face With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

Special Musical Guests Worship & the Arts Ministry St. Luke’s strives to glorify God both through excellent music making in worship and by extending our song into the community through concerts and events designed to share the love of God with the world around us. We nurture growth and foster opportunity for all ages to be actively involved in musical ministry. We are a diverse community, with a variety of music styles to support our worship experiences. From traditional music settings to the sounds of a diverse modern culture, we strive to connect hearts to a loving, timeless God. When newcomers are asked why they come to St. Luke’s, music is often one of the top reasons. With three adult vocal choirs, contemporary vocal and instrumental praise teams, four children’s and youth vocal choirs, and additional instrumental ensembles including the St. Luke’s Orchestra, Wesleyan Ringers, Joyful Rhythms and a seasonal Flute Choir – St. Luke’s music ministries provide the means for hundreds to share their gifts with the congregation and community each Sunday and at a variety of concerts throughout the year. Members of the music ministries also provide leadership for a monthly Taizé service and share their gifts in the community by performing at numerous care facilities and nursing homes, as well as special events. Music in one of the important ways St. Luke’s works to provide inspiration to those who gather to celebrate the love of God through worship.

Thank You!
Gloria in excelsis Deo
Mack Wilberg Angels from the realms of glory, Hear our joyful song below, For we sing the wondrous story Of the shepherds long ago. Though at first they trembled, fearing, Joyful tidings bid them rise; Heav’nly hosts then bright appearing Sang these praises in the skies: Gloria in excelsis Deo! Peace on earth, good will to all! Gloria in excelsis Deo! Hasten now to Bethlehem!
S hare the Wonder!
All good souls who’ve gone before us, Hear this ancient Christmas lay; On this night we join the chorus, Love came down this Holy Day! He awaits us in the manger, Smiling there in purest white. Unto us he is no stranger, But Creator, Life, and Light! Gloria in excelsis Deo! … Heav’n and nature here abiding, Hear the bells of Ages ring! Woods and rivers, shout glad tidings, Tell the wonders of your King! Mountains, cry aloud forever, Solid rocks, now weep for joy! Sun, moon, stars, all sing together! Let this song our hearts employ: Gloria in excelsis Deo! … Amen!

Calypso Lullaby
O Come All Ye Faithful
On a clear and starry night, On a hillside far away, Shepherds saw a golden light, And they heard the angels say: “Alleluia, shout for joy,” Sweet music fills the sky. The heavens ring while angels sing A Christmas lullaby.
O come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem. Come and behold him, Born the King of angels, O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord.
West Indies Carol, arr. Joel Raney
Sleep, sleep, sleep, little one, Rest your head. Dream of peace on earth In your manger bed. Angels filled the ev’ning sky And with joy began to sing: “Glory be to God on high! Let the bells of heaven ring!” Alleluia, shout for joy, Sweet music fills the sky. The heavens ring while angels sing A Christmas lullaby. It came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth To touch their harps of gold. Alleluia, shout for joy,… Sleep, sleep, sleep,…
How Great Our Joy arr. Craig Courtney
While by the sheep we watched at night, Glad tidings brought an angel bright, How great our joy! How great our joy! There shall be born, so did he say, In Bethlehem, a child today, How great our joy! How great our joy! There shall a Child lie in a stall, This Child who shall redeem us all, This gift of God we’ll cherish well, That ever joy our hearts shall fill, Praise we the Lord, Praise we the Lord in heav’n on high! How great our joy! How great our joy!
arr. Dan Forrest
Sing, choirs of angels, Sing in exaltation! Sing, all ye citizens of heav’n above. Glory to God, all glory in the highest. O come, let us adore him,… Christ the Lord! Yea, Lord, we greet thee, Born this happy morning, Jesus, to thee be all glory giv’n! Word of the Father Now in flesh appearing! O come, let us adore him...Christ the Lord!
Festival First Nowell arr. Dan Forrest
ALL SINGING The first Nowell the angels did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; I fields where they lay keeping their sheep. On a cold winter’s night that was so deep: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the king of Israel. WOMEN They looked up and saw a star Shining in the east beyond them far; MEN And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. CHOIR ONLY Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the king of Israel. ALL SINGING Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heav’nly Lord That hath made heav’n and earth of nought, And with his blood mankind hath bought; Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the king of Israel.

O Little Town of Bethlehem arr. Stephen Paulus
O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie; Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight. For Christ is born of Mary; And gather’d all above, While mortals sleep the angels keep Their watch of wond’ring love. O morning stars together Proclaim the holy birth; And praises sing to God the King, And peace too all on earth.

Silent Night Peter Anglea
Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright. Round yon virgin mother and child. Holy infant tender and mild, Sleep in peace, Sleep in peace, Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, holy night, Shepherds quake at the sight. Glories steam from heaven afar; Heav’nly hosts sing Alleluia. Christ is born, Christ is born, Christ the Savior is born! Jesus, Lord, at thy birth. Silent night, holy night, Wondrous star, lend thy light. With the angels let us sing Alleluia to our King; Alleluia, Christ is born, Christ is born, Christ the Savior is born.
Carol of the Bells arr. Barlow Bradford
Hark! How the bells, Sweet silver bells, All seem to say Throw cares away, Christmas is here, Bringing good cheer To young and old, Meek and the bold. Ding, dong, ding, dong, That is their song, With joyful ring All caroling. One seems to hear Words of good cheer From ev’rywhere, filling the air, O, how they pound, Raising the sound, O’er hill and dale Telling their tale. Gayly they ring While people sing Songs of good cheer, Christmas is here! Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas! Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas! On, on they send on without end, Their joyful tone To ev’ry home. Ringing, ringing, ringing, ringing, Bringing Christmas joy!

Veiled in flesh the Godhead see, Hail th’incarnate Deity, Pleased with us in flesh to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel. Hark! The herald angels sing! “Glory to the newborn King!” Hail the heav’n-born Prince of Peace, Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, Ris’n with healing in his wings. Thank you for your generous support through today’s offering.
Crooked Creek More than a year ago, St. Luke’s leaders zeroed in on one of the poorest neighborhoods in Indianapolis, located a short drive from the church building. Recognizing the challenges these neighbors faced, the church and its partners asked local residents like 28-year-old Erika Hinton what would be the best way to help.
Many of Erika’s apartment-dwelling neighbors struggled – like her large family – to make ends meet financially; to have access to reliable sources of healthy food.
to the new Crooked Creek Food Pantry located in a small office suite in the Eskanazi Health Center Pecar at 6940 N. Michigan Road. And Erika’s influence continues.
Erica’s husband worked part-time through a placement agency, but with five children at home to feed, Erika told Rev. Jamalyn Peigh Williamson, St. Luke’s pastor for outreach that a food pantry could help the Crooked Creek neighborhood.
Erika shared stories of the trips to other pantries to help planners rethink how the Crooked Creek pantry might offer a more dignified experience.
At the time, the closest pantry to Erika’s apartment required her to take a bus trip all the way into the main downtown bus terminal and back to the north side — a journey that could easily eat about half a day. In March 2015, all that changed. Today, it’s an easy walk from her apartment
14
“You get to pick the food you want for your family, and a good amount, too,” she said. “I’ve let everybody in my apartment complex know about the pantry.” Adults check in with the staff and wait in an adjoining hallway until a volunteer meets them and prepares a grocery cart for them. The pantry shelves are marked with the number of items clients can select, depending on
the number of people in their families. “This pantry is more family-oriented than most, especially in the amounts of food they let you take home,” said Sauquan Albertie, whose back injury and unsuccessful surgeries have kept him from working. His blended family includes four children at home, plus three older daughters who live on their own. Sauquan’s family visits the pantry every month. He appreciates the variety of food offered, which includes frozen and canned meats, canned vegetables and fruits, juice, bread, rice and dairy products. Their visits make it possible to put some food aside so that, when one or more of the older daughters visit, the family can eat together. The pantry’s location is also convenient for Sauquan’s family for
Food Pantry Worth the Wait For Dignity the health services within the same building. Saquan has appointments with a family doctor and can get prescriptions filled at the on-site pharmacy. But for both Erika and Sauquan, it’s the unseen qualities of the Crooked Creek Food Pantry that set it apart from others. In addition to giving families food choices and helpful quantities of food to take home, the pantry’s volunteers offer a welcoming spirit, a non-judgmental attitude, and individual attention to their clients.
“I would sit and wait at this pantry before I’d go to any other,” said Sauquan.
After Less Than One Year, Crooked Creek Food Pantry Serves Nearly Twice as Many Families as Expected At the time of year when of many of us are planning holiday meals that will bring our families together, Crooked Creek Food Pantry supports the daily needs of families who feel fortunate just to have regular meals. Since it opened in March 2015, the pantry has become a valuable resource for hundreds of families and many single, older adults living near 71st and North Michigan Road.
Last year, the St. Luke’s Candlelight Christmas Concert raised $12,000 to help the pantry open in March 2015. This year, an anonymous donor has pledged up to $15,000 to match each gift Given during the concerts dollar for dollar. “Initially, we estimated that we would serve 125 families per week by the end of this year,” said Maria Blake, volunteer manager for the Crooked Creek Food Pantry. “We have grown from serving 45 households a week to more than 200 during the peak weeks of the month.” Created in partnership with DowAgro Sciences and Eskenazi Health, the food pantry gets a little more than half of its food from Gleaners Food Bank and the nearby Neighborhood Wal-mart. Recently, said Maria, the Pike Plaza Meijer selected Crooked Creek Food Pantry for the third time as a partner for its Simply Give campaigns, matching donations to the pantry.
