pastor’s notes
Weekend Worship Opportunities St. Luke’s is an open community of Christians, offering multiple worship opportunities designed to meet you where you are in your journey with Christ.
“Summertime and the livin’ is easy …” sang Ella Fitzgerald. Well, I don’t know about easy, but summertime at St. Luke’s sure won’t be slow … or boring! Community, children’s camps, trips, mission events, and great worship are just ahead.
TRADITIONAL • 8:15, 9:30 & 11AM
In this edition of Connect you'll read about the summer opportunities for fellowship through our neighborhood gatherings. Being able to connect with each other where we work and live is a great way to make a big church seem smaller and to connect and grow in our faith. Summer is a great time for our youth to serve. It’s not too late to sign up for one of our great mission trips. As a parent, it is amazing to see the transformation that occurs in just one week when your child comes back from such a powerful experience. Check out the opportunities on page 29. The Missions and Outreach Area has a full schedule this summer. Trips will take people to Haiti, Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, and Lotts Creek. Also read about the changes to Servant Day and Back-to-School Extravaganza. I am really looking forward to Sunday worship this summer. We are going to Greece, sort of. We'll be studying Paul’s Letter to the Philippians in a series called The Great Joy Heist starting June 5. That Sunday will be right after the completion of our General Conference in Portland, OR. This is the representative body of global United Methodists who meet every four years to determine changes to our structure and theological/social principles. I will share highlights from GC that Sunday morning. Then, we'll dig into Philippians in earnest. Have you ever thought about the number of significant verses in this short letter? “To live is Christ, to die is gain;” “Look not to your own interests;” “Work out your salvation;” “Press on toward the goal;” “Rejoice in the Lord always;” “Whatever is honorable … think on these things;” “I can do all things through Christ.”

Summer Discipleship at St. Luke’s: Many Opportunities! By Rev. Eric Burton-Krieger Pastor of Adult Discipleship
“I thank my God every time I remember you …” is the way Paul opens his letter to the Philippians. I’ve thought of that phrase often now that I’ve been at St. Luke’s almost a year. My first sermon was about "sowing seeds in a new time," 6
and I believe that this summer and throughout the next year
7
there will be joy in watching what begins to bloom.
COMMUNITY COACHES & NEIGHBORHOOD GATHERINGS One of the places we’re seeing growth are in the neighborhoods in which you live. We had almost 600 people take part in a Lenten Small group this spring and several of those groups have continued meeting in people’s homes and places throughout our community. We’re in the process now of recruiting community coaches – friendly and amazing people who have been group hosts or members and feel called to help new groups take shape. This summer our coaches will be hosting neighborhood gatherings (think a picnic in the park) in Fishers, Carmel, Nora, Broad Ripple, etc. to connect people who have taken part in a small group in the past and
SHORT TERM STUDIES & SUMMER BOOK CLUB
those new to our community. We believe that these intergenerational opportunities will be the seeds of new groups and relationships we’ll be launching this fall! We’ll advertise these as dates are chosen. Taylor O’Hern is our volunteer coordinating this work. She recently came to St Luke’s from Nashville, Tenn., where she served as a small group pastor. Taylor is married to Ryan, and they have two young sons, Micah and Remy. As people new to St. Luke’s, they know that sometimes all it takes to begin feeling more connected is having a place to share a meal, laugh, throw a football, or watch your children play together. We hope our neighborhood gatherings will create this type of opportunity this summer!
CAPTION: Taylor O'Hern, who helps coordinate our Community Coaches and Neighborhood Gatherings (above)
Also beginning to flower are our summer classes and book studies. These are designed as an entry point into more ongoing groups and as a way to take a break and have some fun for as many weeks as you’ll be in town. Our Animate Bible and Half Truths studies will help you explore scripture and might be a great beginning before considering Disciple Bible Study this fall. Dr. Adolf Hansen has agreed to share his knowledge of Bible translations on Sunday, June 12 in our Connections Bookstore. (You might even consider a new Bible to get ready for the fall.)
The summer book club tackles bestselling books that have great faith connections. You can pick up a book on June 5, if needed. These and all of our studies push us to think about how we practice our faith in an increasingly complex world. As we look toward the fall, we’ll be back with opportunities for Disciple Bible Study classes (12 weeks), small groups (5 weeks), and short term classes on a variety of topics (6 weeks or less) all beginning on September 11. Look for our adult discipleship fair on Sunday, August 14 to learn more about all of these offerings. You can find further details at stlukesumc.com.

Summer Sermon Series: The Great Joy Heist and Weak & Strong By Rev. David Williamson Pastor of Family & Worship Ministries
What brings you joy? What robs your joy? Should we be meek and vulnerable? Or live with strength and authority? Let's explore these questions together this summer.
10
11
GET YOUR JOY ON IN JUNE AT ST. LUKE'S!
can pinpoint a feeling of joy – but abiding in that joy is a whole different thing altogether.
If I were to ask you what brings you joy, what things would come to your mind? A beautiful sunset? A magical vacation? The presence of family and friends?
This is, of course, ironic. Never have we lived in an age where there are so many products and industries dedicated to our happiness – offering the satisfaction of our wishes with the push of a button or the swipe of a card. And yet, if you stand at a busy intersection and watch the people in their cars or crossing the street, chances are you won’t find many people who look joyful. It’s simply not the norm in our culture.
Perhaps you find joy in experiences like riding down the highway on a beautiful day with the top rolled down on your car. Or maybe belting out an 80’s tune at the top of your lungs (this last one may be a little self-revealing, but come on, who doesn’t love a good Journey song?). But say I were to flip the question, and ask: what steals your joy? What would your response be? There might be a few things that come immediately to mind. Or you might just shrug your shoulders. It’s not as easy to define. And perhaps, it might be a whole multitude of things working together. The fact, though, is that joy is often an elusive or fleeting experience. We
So as we kick off the summer season, we’re going to take a dive into Paul’s letter to the Philippians. It’s a perfect time, as we’ll have the personal opportunity to do some of those things listed above that bring us joy (like going on vacation or grilling out with friends). And Philippians is the perfect letter to explore the topic of joy. In just four short chapters, Paul uses the word “joy” or “rejoice” 16 times! And when you consider that he wrote the letter while sitting in a
prison awaiting trial (not exactly a joyful place), then it makes you wonder if the joy he describes is something deeper and more abiding than just a fleeting feeling.
WEAK & STRONG FOR JULY Our culture offers us a lot of false choices. And no, I’m not talking about the presidential candidates that we have to choose from this primary season. By false choices, I mean all those times when we’re presented with a black/white or an either/or situation, when in fact there’s a middle ground. Or perhaps the correct answer is both/and rather than choosing one side or another.
A simple example comes from the world of parenting. We’re often left feeling like we have to choose between affection or firmness as parents. Do we parent by rules and structure, or do we parent with empathy and encouragement? Clearly, both are required for effective parenting. Rules with no affection will only lead our children into rebellion; affection with no rules results in a spoiled child. The truth is, if we want our children to flourish, both kindness and clear boundaries are needed! In his book Weak & Strong, Andy Crouch explores another dichotomy that often confronts leaders. Do we lead with vulnerability (allowing others to see
and identify with our struggles) or with authority (giving clear expectations and accountability)? Again, this is a false choice. Vulnerability without authority leads to suffering; authority without vulnerability leads to exploiting. A good leader embraces both vulnerability and authority. But here’s a deeper truth – the dichotomy Andy describes isn’t just about leadership, it’s a choice that faces each of us as humans. Do we shield ourselves (or our children) from meaningful risk (i.e., eliminating vulnerability)? Do we embrace the authority that is given to us? Do we recognize the capacity God gives us all to take meaningful action in the world? The
C O N N E C T @ S T. L U K E ’ S
deeper we dig into this concept, the more we realize that the path of vulnerability and authority isn’t just for leaders – it’s part of how God wired us way back in the Garden of Eden. Only when we embrace the dual choice of meaningful action and risk will we discover what it takes to flourish as human beings. Hope you can join us this summer and bring along a friend.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL EXTRAVAGANZA On July 23, St. Luke’s will host the fourth Annual Back-to-School Extravaganza with other community ministry partners including the Children’s Bureau, Second Presbyterian Church, Northminster Presbyterian Church, the Jordan Y and IU Health. Our goal is to help 1200 students from Washington and Pike Townships be ready for the first day of school.
PROJECT ABC We also plan to help the teachers and staff at Nora, Spring Mill, Fox Hill and Greenbriar Elementary Schools get ready for the first day of school. On Saturday, July 30, we will kick off our first Project ABC starting at 8:30AM at each school. Volunteers can sign up to serve at one of the elementary schools where we will clean up the outside and help the teachers get organized on the inside.
SERVANT DAY Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 10, in honor of the new trend to serve on or around the anniversary of September 11th. We will team up with our partner ministries in Indianapolis and send volunteers to clean, paint, mulch, plant, organize and do other requested tasks.
ENGLISH AS A NEW LANGUAGE If you are looking for an ongoing service opportunity, maybe English as a New Language (ENL) is a good place for you to invest your time. Leaders connect with students and help them become more English proficient. We also are looking for volunteers to help lead activities with the ENL students’ children. Want to learn more? Contact Gina Woods, woodsg@ stlukesumc.com.
SCHOOL TUTORS Another educational opportunity is to consider becoming a tutor at Fox Hill or Greenbriar Elementary. Questions? Contact Tom Lange, tom.c.lange@gmail.com.
GETTING AHEAD A new ministry will begin in August called Getting Ahead. Twelve students will participate in a learning experience for 16 weeks under the guidance of Pastor Jamalyn Peigh Williamson and Bethany Garrity. At the end of the 16 weeks, Getting Ahead graduates will be matched with members of St. Luke’s who will serve as “Family Friends.” Family Friends will
make contact with the graduate once a week to assist them in achieving their goals. Once a month, Family Friends and Getting Ahead graduates will gather at St. Luke’s for an educational program and dinner. If you are interested, please contact Bethany Garrity, bgarrity33@comcast.net.
BOOK STUDIES Finally, consider signing up for one of the studies offered by Pastor Jamalyn that will help you understand more about Outreach Ministries’ focus and strategies. Either study, Toxic Charity or Bridges Out of Poverty, will open your eyes to a new philosophy for serving in the community. Classes
start in August, and you can sign up at stlukesumc.com.

The Work of our Governing Board and Administrative Committees
Maria Blake
By Nancy Lange Executive Director of Ministries & Operations
After an extensive consultation process in 2008, the leadership of St. Luke’s elected a 13-member Governing Board to take primary responsibility for long-range strategic planning. 14
Senior Pastor Rob Fuquay and Executive Director of Operations and Ministries Nancy Lange also serve on the Governing Board which works in tandem with the other administrative committees: Lay Leadership, Trustees, Finance and StaffParish Relations. In 2013, the Governing Board formed a Visioning Task Force commissioned to articulate a more specific picture of God’s preferred future for St. Luke’s. Ultimately, five key directives emerged, providing context and guidance for planning. These five key directives are: • Reaching greater numbers of young people • Helping people grow in their faith • Developing an Outreach and Missions emphasis • Involving greater numbers of people in service and church leadership
Meet the St. Luke’s Governing Board (continued on page 16)
• Improving facilities, resources and technology
LAY LEADER & LAY LEADERSHIP The Lay Leader and members of the Lay Leadership Committee play key roles in linking the vision and plan of St. Luke’s with the ministry of the Indiana Annual Conference. The Lay Leadership Committee works with Pastor Rob to identify leaders within the congregation to fill key spots on all administrative committees. The committee works to identify those with spiritual gifts aligned with the various areas of ministry and works to develop those gifts through equipping, providing prayer support and mentoring those in leadership positions.
TRUSTEES The Trustees are responsible for helping the church run effectively and by providing a secure environment for worship and the work of ministries. The Trustees oversee, maintain and supervise our church building and property. The Trustees work in conjunction with Pastor Rob and Executive Director Nancy Lange to assure that adequate insurance and risk management policies are in place and that the annual operating budget includes sufficient support for property maintenance and
improvements. The Trustees report to the Governing Board.
FINANCE The Finance Committee’s goal is to fund the ministries of St. Luke’s through a system that raises, manages and disperses the funds of St. Luke’s to help realize the mission and vision of the church. The ministry of the Finance Committee is to nurture the financial vitality of the congregation. The Finance Committee reports to the Governing Board.
STAFF-PARISH RELATIONS COMMITTEE The Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) serves a key role in supporting the pastors and staff of St. Luke’s by helping to build strong relations between the staff and the congregation. The SPRC supports pastors and staff by advocating for a healthy work environment which includes employee policies, procedures and benefits and consults on all personnel matters as outlined in the Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church. The StaffParish Relations Committee reports to the Governing Board.

If you are a parent, you may remember having this dialogue in your mind while attending worship. Then imagine that you have a child with special considerations - needs that require attention beyond typical experiences, things that may threaten your child's safety and health. Now meet Amber Vickery. She is a Developmental Specialist in Washington Township and our Special Needs Coordinator in Children’s Ministry. She serves each Sunday, alongside a team of volunteers, with children who have special considerations. “I began feeling a tug from God, and I knew I wanted to help families engage in the life of the church without having to worry about their children. My dream is to have every family at St. Luke’s engaging in worship with the comfort of knowing their child is safe, learning about God and worshipping with their peers,” Amber said. This is our dream as a church, too. Amber has been diligently working to pair students with a “buddy” on Sundays. The buddy system is effective because the adult buddy develops a relationship with the child. They make sure their buddy is cared

for and is safe while learning with their classmates. Jason has been a buddy for Corwyn, a third grade student, for the past two years. Jason explains, “My relationship with this ministry is a spiritual one. I love to help Corwyn learn more about the Lord, and I am so proud when he memorizes his Bible verses or raises his hand with a thoughtful answer that makes me think, 'Wow! He had an amazing answer for that!'" Corwyn’s parents, Misty and Chris, say they can relax at church now, too. “Corwyn trusts Jason and always looks forward to seeing him on Sundays.” Corwyn shares, “Jason reminds me of a hero because he is always there, like Moses, in case help is needed. He is kind and he likes to play Legos with me. He walks with me when I get frustrated, and I feel calmer and safer from my temper.” That’s not all, though, says Amber. “The children in the classroom continue to amaze me as they embrace one another, encouraging and loving one another. My heart swells thinking of the relationships and compassion they are building.” We are currently looking for buddies for students on Sunday mornings and at special events. Amber would love to share the vision of this ministry with you. Contact her at specialneeds@stlukesumc.com to learn more! C O N N E C T @ S T. L U K E ’ S

WELCOME TO ST. LUKE’S! PATRICE SMITH, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES As an Indianapolis native, I grew up near St. Luke’s church. I am a proud Washington Township alum. Go Panthers! I accepted my call to ministry as a 19-year-old. And I studied Biblical Counseling at Crossroads Bible College. It was in my college years during an internship at Child Evangelism Fellowship - that I discovered my passion to work with kids. My husband, Darrel, and I met while serving at a youth ministry event. And we have been blessed with two daughters, Cydney and Melody. In my role at St. Luke’s, I get to see and look forward to the kids being so eager to participate, volunteer and interact during each worship time and lesson. They are truly passionate and knowledgeable about their faith. I am inspired and encouraged by them. It is truly a privilege and an honor to serve within such a great ministry that is committed to excellence and God’s glory.
