SUMMER EVENTS

BOOK STUDY: THE NEXT RIGHT THING FRIDAY, JUNE 4 • 6-8PM Join a group of intergenerational St. Lukers as we read through The Next Right Thing: A Simple, Soulful Practice for Making Life Decisions by Emily Freeman. Nothing gets our attention like an unmade decision: Should I accept the new position? Which schooling choice is best for my kids? How can I support my aging parents? When we have a decision to make and the answer isn’t clear, what we want more than anything is peace, clarity, and a nudge in the right direction. Whether you’re in the midst of a major life transition or are weary of the low-grade anxiety that daily life can bring, Emily helps create space for your soul to breathe so you can live life with God at a gentle pace and discern your next right thing in love. Hosted by Bev Gallagher at her home (address provided upon registration). Register at stlukesumc.com/registration/ popupnextright2021.

BOOK STUDY: UNTAMED THURSDAY, JUNE 17 • 7-8:30PM Join an intergenerational group of St. Lukers as we read through Untamed by Glennon Doyle. Untamed is both an intimate memoir and a galvanizing wake-up call. It is the story of how one woman learned that a responsible mother is not one who slowly dies for her children, but one who shows them how to fully live. It is the story of navigating divorce, forming a new blended family, and discovering that the brokenness or wholeness of a family depends not on its structure but on each member’s ability to bring her full self to the table. And it is the story of how each of us can begin to trust ourselves enough to set boundaries, make peace with our bodies, honor our anger and heartbreak, and unleash our truest, wildest instincts so that we become women who can finally look at ourselves and say: There She Is. Hosted by Meagan Burton-Krieger (address provided upon registration). Register at stlukesumc.com/ registration/popupuntamed2021. MIDDLE SCHOOL MAYHEM MONDAY-FRIDAY • JUNE 21-25 Students entering 5th-8th graders this fall are invited to our FAVORITE event of the year: Middle School Mayhem! BOOK STUDY: THE MAKING OF BIBLICAL WOMANHOOD SUNDAY, JUNE 27 • 5-7PM Join a group of young adults as we read through The Making of Biblical Womanhood by Beth Allison Barr. Biblical womanhood - the belief that God designed women to be submissive wives, virtuous mothers, and joyful homemakers - pervades North American Christianity. From choices about careers to roles in local churches to relationship dynamics, this belief shapes the everyday lives of evangelical women. Yet biblical womanhood isn’t biblical, says Baylor University historian Beth Allison Barr. It was born in a series of clearly definable historical moments. This book moves the conversation about biblical womanhood beyond Greek grammar and into the realm of church history - ancient, medieval, and modern - to show that this belief is not divinely ordained but a product of human civilization that continues to creep into the church. Barr’s historical insights provide context for contemporary teachings about women’s roles in the church and help move the conversation forward. Hosted by Sara Bannon (address provided upon registration). This will be a meal and discussion with the main dish provided for dinner. Bring a side to share. Register at stlukesumc.com/ registration/popupmakingbiblicalwomen2021. BOOK STUDY: LIFE ON THE COLOR LINE TUESDAY, JUNE 29 • 6-8PM Join a group of intergenerational St. Lukers under the tent in the parking lot as we read through Life on the Color Line by Gregory Howard Williams. In this extraordinary and powerful memoir, Williams recounts his remarkable journey along the color line and illuminates the contrasts between the black and white worlds: one of privilege, opportunity and comfort, the other of deprivation, repression, and struggle. He tells of the hostility and prejudice he encountered all too often, from both blacks and whites, and the surprising moments of encouragement and acceptance he found from each. Hosted by John Baker under the tent in the parking lot. Register at stlukesumc.com/registration/ popuplifeonthecolorline2021.

THE FUTURE FOOD OF INDY THURSDAY, JULY 8 • 6:30PM • THE GARAGE FOOD HALL Meet at The Garage Food Hall downtown and enjoy great food from one of the five BIPOC owned food stands in the Garage. BOOK STUDY: PROFESSIONAL TROUBLEMAKER THURSDAY, JULY 15 • 7-8:30PM Join a group of intergenerational St. Lukers as we read through Professional Troublemaker by Luvvie Ajayi Jones. We’re all afraid. We’re afraid of asking for what we want because we’re afraid of hearing “no.” We’re afraid of being different, of being too much, or not enough. We’re afraid of leaving behind the known for the unknown. But in order to do the things that will truly, meaningfully change our lives, we have to become professional troublemakers: people who are committed to not letting fear talk them out of the things they need to do or say to live free. The point is not to be fearless, but to know we are afraid and charge forward regardless. It is to recognize that the things we must do are more significant than our fears. This book is about how to live boldly in spite of all the reasons we have to cower. Let’s go! This book club is hosted by Meagan BurtonKrieger (address provided upon registration). Register here: stlukesumc.com/registration/Popupprofessional2021. BOOK STUDY: BEATING GUNS FRIDAY, JULY 16 • 5-7PM Join a group of young adults as we read through Beating Guns: Hope for People Who Are Weary of Gun Violence. Parkland. Las Vegas. Dallas. Orlando. San Bernardino. Paris. Charleston. Sutherland Springs. Newtown. These cities are now known for the people who were shot and killed in them. More Americans have died from guns in the US in the last 50 years than in all the wars in American history. With less than five percent of the world’s population, the people of the US own nearly half the world’s guns. America also has the most annual gun deaths - homicide, suicide, and accidental gun deaths - at 105 per day, or more than 38,000 per year. Some people say it’s a

heart problem. Others say it’s a gun problem. The authors of Beating Guns believe it’s both. Beating Guns allows victims and perpetrators of gun violence to tell their own compelling stories, offering hope for change and helping us reimagine the world as one that turns from death to life, where swords become plows and guns are turned into garden tools. Hosted by Laura Bicanic (address provided upon registration). This will be a meal and discussion with the main dish provided for dinner. Bring a side to share. Register at stlukesumc.com/ registration/popupbeatingguns2021. THE ART OF FOOD OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD SATURDAY, JULY 17 • 12PM • GARFIELD PARK Meet at the Garfield Park shelter. BOOK STUDY: THE SUM OF US THURSDAY, AUGUST 12 • 7-8:30PM Join an intergenerational group of St. Lukers as we read through The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together by Heather McGhee. McGhee embarks on a deeply personal journey across the country from Mississippi to California to Maine, tallying what we lose when we buy into the zero-sum paradigm the idea that progress for some of us must come at the expense of others. Along the way, she meets White people who confide in her about losing their homes, their dreams, and their shot at better jobs to the toxic mix of American racism and greed. This is the story of how public goods in this country - from parks and pools to functioning schools - have become private luxuries; of how unions collapsed, wages stagnated, and inequality increased; and of how this country, unique among the world’s advanced economies, has thwarted universal healthcare. Hosted by Meagan Burton-Krieger (address provided upon registration). Register at stlukesumc.com/registration/ popupthesumofus2021. BOOK STUDY: CHRIST IN CRISIS SATURDAY, AUGUST 14 • 5-7PM Join a group of young adults as we read through Christ in Crisis: Reclaiming Jesus in a Time of Fear, Hate, and Violence. In this book, Jim Wallis provides a path of spiritual healing and solidarity to help us heal the divide separating Americans today. Building on “Reclaiming Jesus” - the declaration he and other church leaders wrote in May 2018 to address America’s current crisis - Wallis

argues that Christians have become disconnected from Jesus and need to revisit their spiritual foundations. By pointing to eight questions Jesus asked or is asked, Wallis provides a means to measure whether we are truly aligned with the moral and spiritual foundations of our Christian faith. Led by Eliot Blackburn (address provided upon registration). This will be a meal and discussion with the main dish provided for dinner. Bring a side to share.
