Women’s Bible Study
The New Perspectives class invites you to write a letter to at least one of your local or national elected representatives as the 2013 legislative sessions begin. You might encourage him/her to seek active listening and civil conversation in all their interactions with colleagues and constituents. Paper, envelopes, addresses, sample letters and stamps will be provided. We will help you find out who your national and local representatives are. Spanish Together
Wednesdays, January 9-April 10, 1-2PM in E105. Isaiah is sometimes referred to as a miniature Bible with regard to its structure. It has 66 chapters just as the Bible has 66 books. There are two divisions within Isaiah—39 chapters in the first and 27 chapters in the second. It is said that the prophet Isaiah is quoted in the New Testament more than all other prophets combined. Why is this? Could it be because Isaiah identifies God as sovereign over creation and history, as holy, as judge and redeemer? Could it be because he writes of a servant through whom God’s redemption will come? Could it be because he envisions the hope of God’s people in a world that needed God’s message— both then and now? Disciple Bible Study I is a life-transforming class that offers an overview of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. The Fast Track is a condensed version of the traditional 34-week Disciple class. It is reduced to 12 weeks for the Old Testament and 12 weeks for the New Testament. No previous Bible knowledge is needed. A strong commitment to 20-30 minutes of Bible reading each day is needed. (Reading is also available on audio CDs so you can listen instead of reading.) You will need to purchase a Disciple I Study Manual (red cover). A study Bible is also needed. At the end of this class, you will understand the flow of the Old Testament. Disciple I Fast Track—New Testament, the second half of this class, will be offered in late August through November. Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibit: Chartered Bus Day Trip Cincinnati Museum Center, Cincinnati, OH. Concealed inside were ancient scrolls that had not been seen for 2,000 years. Now known as the Dead Sea Scrolls, they are considered among the world’s greatest archaeological discoveries. Many objects in this exhibit include remains of religious articles, weapons of war, stone carvings, textiles and beautiful mosaics, along with everyday household items such as jewelry and ceramics. 2013 INTERNATIONAL ADULT TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES The St. Luke's Adult Travel Ministry announces two new trips for 2013. Holy Land with Rob and Susan Fuquay
Normandy and Paris
September 16-25, 2013. This will be a special opportunity to visit the historical and spiritual sites of the Holy Land with our Senior Pastor Rob Fuquay providing the context and spiritual leadership. We will visit Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, stop at the Mount of the Beatitudes and then travel down the Jordan River to the Dead Sea, where will make a stop at the impressive site of Masada. On our way to Jerusalem, we stop at Qum Rum and then spend a day in Bethlehem, visit the Garden of Gethsemene, Wailing Wall, the Via Delorosa, the Holy Church of the Sepulcher and end our week at the traditional site of the Garden Tomb.

After leading groups from St. Luke's to the shores of Normandy, France in 2011 and 2012, former St. Luke’s senior pastor Dr. Carver McGriff has once again agreed to lead a group through the historical sites of the Normandy Invasion. We will stay for five nights in Bayeux, France and visit Utah and Omaha Beaches, as well as very personal locations where Carver served following the invasion, including the very spot where he was wounded in an artillery attack. We end the visit with a meaningful stop at the American and the German cemeteries. Also included is a visit to Mont-Saint-Michel (a UNESCO world heritage site) and Giverny, to visit Monet's home and gardens, and will conclude with two nights in Paris.
CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.
January at The Track Our virtue for January is DETERMINATION—deciding it’s worth it to finish what you’ve started. Our lives are like a big Amazing Race, and when we practice determination, we can be the one who goes the distance and finishes strong. This month’s memory verse is “Let us keep on running the race marked out for us,” HEBREW 12:1. When God asks us to do something, God is often guiding us step-by-step in a certain direction that we may not even see or realize. Our determination to be the one who follows God leads us closer to the good things God has in store for us!

Parents’ Day Out
Classes (9AM-1PM) for three- to five-year olds are offered in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. All teachers are experienced, qualified, well-trained and strive to maintain strong relationships with the children and their families. Preschool offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum where children may grow socially, creatively, emotionally, cognitively and physically. Children must be 3 years old by 9/1/2013 to enroll for the 2013-2014 school year.
Classes (9AM-1PM) are offered for children ages 10 months to three years. PDO was established to provide parents of young children time for themselves on a regular basis. Children participate in structured play in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. Opportunities are provided for children to learn beginning social skills while having fun. Children must be 10 months by 9/1/2013 to enroll for the 2013-2014 school year.
FAMILY MINISTRIES Marriage Enrichment Marriage is a journey, and the Marriage Enrichment weekend being offered by St. Luke's is designed to enrich that journey. This workshop is an exploration into the positives in a marriage: a guided growth experience. Both in a group and privately, husband and wife are led through a sequential set of communication exercises. This sequence creates learning experiences in which participants are enriched through personal growth. Marriage Enrichment is taking place the weekend of March 8-10, 2013. Cost is $325/couple, which includes two nights stay at the Artists Colony Inn in Nashville, Indiana, breakfasts both mornings, Saturday dinner, and all workshop materials. Mr. Best is a 1950 graduate of Harvard. He was a member of the adjunct faculty at IUPUI for 17 years before retiring in 1999 as an associate professor. As an avocation he presents one-man shows as Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette. He is known locally and nationally for these presentations before groups ranging from kindergartners to attendees of national conventions.

Computer Collection & E-Waste Recycling Event
Thanks to people who have had home energy audits, the Green Ministry was able, for the first time, to provide 1400 paper dinner containers for use in our Thanksgiving Meals project. No more Styrofoam! The Green Ministry would like to encourage all people bringing plates and cups into the building to choose paper products or use the dishes and utensils in one of our kitchens.
St. Luke's will host a community computer collection drive and electronic waste recycling event on Saturday, January 5, 2013, 9AM-1PM at door #7 (rear of building). Donate your no-longer-used computer equipment to Wings for West Africa, a local non-profit that refurbishes and ships computers to schools in West Africa. Hard drives are professionally wiped and tax receipts provided. We are also accepting anything with a cord to be safely recycled by RecycleForce Inc. Everything with a cord must be recycled! HEALTH MINISTRIES Quarterly Blood Drive Please raise your sleeve to donate blood at our quarterly Blood Drive. The Colts are donating a Colts football that is laser signed by Jeff Saturday to each person who donates blood at St. Luke’s on Sunday January 8, from 7AM-1PM in W125, just inside Entrance #4. You can preschedule a specific appointment time on-line at www.donorpoint.org or you can just drop in that day to donate without an appointment. It is suggested that you pre-schedule an appointment online so we can get an idea of how many footballs we will need. Remember to: 1) Bring a picture ID 2) Bring list of your medications 3) Hydrate yourself with lots of fluid the day before and the day of your donation. 4) Eat a good healthy breakfast. Always eat foods that are iron rich. 4) 16 year olds may donate with a signed Indiana Blood Center Parental Consent Form, available at the Blood Drive, or you can print a copy off the website when you register. 5) Not sure if you’re eligible to donate? On November 30 and December 1, the St. Luke’s Music Ministry undertook their annual Christmas Candlelight Concerts in the Sanctuary, filling the room with beautiful music, and celebrating the truly global message of God’s love through Jesus’ birth. The concert undertaking represents weeks of preparation, hundreds of hours of rehearsal, and high levels of commitment, faith and prayer! Much to the joy of the performers, the Sanctuary was filled for both performances—over 2500 in attendance—with noticeable growth particularly at the Saturday afternoon concert. At times the audience was surrounded by percussionists, handbell ringers and singers—truly surround-sound! Ensembles contributing to the concerts were the Chancel Choir, New Song, Children’s Choirs, St. Luke’s Orchestra, Wesleyan Ringers, Joyful Rhythms and musical guests, Circle City Ringers and the newly formed St. Luke’s Percussion Ensemble. The musicians were supported by the hospitality of an enthusiastic usher team, and skillful audio visual support from Jason Barnes.
As a part of the performance, a free-will offering was received, with proceeds being directed to the St. Luke’s Angel Tree project, the United Methodist Global HIV/AIDS Fund, and for the development of future concerts. Those attending the concerts were generous in their financial support, setting new records in giving of over $11,000. Thank you!

Sierra Leone Trip
Calling all educators! Marty Hunsucker is leading a team to Sierre Leone from June 20-July 6 to train and teach good educational methodology. The training will be in two different primary schools with a total of 40 teachers. Your weekend of rest will be spent in Tiama. Cost of the trip is $3000 and a deposit of $1000 is due by March 1. Refugee Assistance Ministry to Host Green Card Session for Refugees R.A.M. is sponsoring a session in January to teach refugees how to fill out the necessary forms to obtain their Green Cards. Refugees have come to our city at the invitation of the US government and Indianapolis. They are eligible to work and live here permanently, but they do need to complete the forms for a Green Card one year after their arrival. During our session, one "teacher" will give instructions for completing each line on the form. Volunteers are needed to work with each refugee to show them how to use the computer. The session will be on a Saturday morning (TBA) in January. This is once again a community-wide event. School officials, members of other churches, and Nora community groups such as Kiwanis have agreed to help. RAM is also always looking for donations of kitchen items, furniture, mattresses, and coats. There are so many ways to get involved with the refugees. Interested? Indoor Open Labyrinth Walk Every Friday, 5-7PM, Fellowship Hall or N103/104. This prayer form is an alternative to seated meditation and offers an opportunity to end your week with a time for quiet prayer and contemplation. You may want to bring prayer requests/ celebrations to accompany you on your walk. A host or hostess will be available to answer questions or give you a brief introduction to labyrinth walking. In addition, there is a permanent indoor labyrinth painted on the floor of N103/104 (check schedule by door for availability).

Exploring Spiritual Practices This Lenten season, deepen your journey with the Mystery we call God by doing what Christians have done for centuries. You are invited to explore six spiritual practices with the goal of finding at least one that is helpful and meaningful for you. All are simple to learn and can be woven into your daily/weekly schedule. Expect one session on each of the following practices: Prayer, Guided Meditation, Silent Meditation, Labyrinth Walking, Journaling and Lectio Divina with a concluding session on Spiritual Types. Well, imagine being able to declare your FREEDOM from financial burdens in 2013! We will once again be sponsoring Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University classes. FPU is brand new for 2013, featuring a shortened class schedule (9 weeks vs. 13) along with brand new materials studying such topics as saving, budgeting, debt reduction, insurance and investing. A Father's Grace: A Circle of Dads Dealing with Divorce

When one goes through divorce, everything changes. How does one parent when one can no longer be present with your child? What does "family" look like now? Where do you turn for support and guidance? Beginning in 2013, the UMM will be organizing a ministry entitled "A Father’s Grace" which will offer men tools and practices to cope the myriad of emotional and spiritual changes that occur through divorce. A Father’s Grace offers hope to end the cycle of isolation and to assist men in redefining who they are and how to do "family" while navigating the challenges of co-parenting. Remember the fish fry? Remember how we raised a bunch of money for a home in Haiti? Wanna come build it? Dave Williamson is leading a group to help a family in need of hope and a home. The dates will be February 3-10 (and yes, that does mean we'll fly out on Super Bowl Sunday, but should get to watch the big game at our hotel before flying into Haiti Monday morning!). MLK Day of Service
We value the youth of our church, and we are committed to building a sustainable youth ministry that is going to have a deep impact. That's why we are developing a game plan together. We have invited Youth Ministry Architects to visit us on January 18-20, 2013. (Learn more about them atwww.ymarchitects.com.) YMA will spend the majority of their time listening to a variety of groups within the church through focused listening groups. We hope to see participation in those groups from a broad spectrum of parents, volunteers, youth, and people who just love our youth. We want your insights, your frustrations, and your dreams to be heard.

After spending two days in these listening groups (and taking copious notes), the YMA team will hunker down to write a report, sharing with us what they've heard about the youth programs—including assets and challenges—and where it seems that God might be taking us next. All students who participate in listening groups will be entered to win a prize!
High School Weekday Small Groups We currently have two weekday small group opportunities for high school students. All high school girls are invited to come to a small group on Tuesdays from 6:30-7:30PM at the Lodge. All high school guys are invited to come to a small group on Wednesdays from 6-7PM at Buffalo Wild Wings at 86th and Township Line Road. These groups are a great way to get to know each other, have a place of respite during busy weeks, and discuss your faith with peers. We hope your student will consider coming to check out a small group soon.

Conversations Around the Scripture Sundays, 9:30–10:30AM in E105. United Methodist Pastor Martin Thielen was asked, “What’s the least I can believe and still be a Christian?” His thoughtful response became the basis of a book that helps us consider what matters most in a life of faith. Thielen begins his book entitled What’s the Least I Can Believe and Still Be Christian by identifying things we need not believe. He concludes the book with ten things he believes we need to understand about Jesus—his identity, priority, work, example, death, resurrection, legacy, and vision for the world. Thielen notes that a great benefit of these beliefs about Jesus is that they provide promising answers to some of life’s questions. Stephen Ministers are trained to confidentially meet with those experiencing confusion, difficulties, heartaches, loneliness and pain. Let this be the best New Year's resolution ever. We are now utilizing a computerized check-in system (CheckPoint) in Children's Ministries. Parents should register their children in this system in The Track area (East Passage). There are computer kiosks located across from the pager desk in The Track, and staff available to assist you. Once registered, the printer will produce a name badge for each child as well as a corresponding badge for the parent to use when picking up their child(ren). Parents who are missing their name badges will only be allowed to pick up their children by obtaining permission of the children's ministry staff. Volunteers will not release a child without a badge. The CheckPoint system will provide a greater level of organization during the check-in procedure, improvement in attendance data, and an increase in the efficiency of our overall administration. But most importantly, the automated system will heighten the overall security of children's ministry and increase parental confidence that each child is as safe as possible while within the walls of St. Luke's UMC.

Family Fuel January 6 Family Fuel is the service where kids bring their parents to worship! Join us the first Sunday morning of each month at 10:45AM in Robertson Chapel. This worship service is geared towards kids, but designed for families to share a faith experience together. Each month, we focus on one virtue (January is determination) that highlights a different aspect of God’s character through singing, dancing, silly skits and games as well as a lesson from God’s Word. Also, each month kids will leave with a cool application tool to help remind them all month of what they learned in Family Fuel. Late last year, there was news coverage of a pair of disabled brothers who wanted to leave their home only to find that their aluminum wheelchair ramp had been stolen! SAWs worked with three TV stations and Home Depot to put a new ramp together for them, doing the design, prefabrication and construction in three days! That extra effort gave the brothers hope and freedom!
Fork, Knife, & Glass is a community group here at St. Luke’s for anyone who is single who would like to have dinner the third Wednesday of each month (except holidays) at 6:30PM at a local restaurant and enjoy conversations and laughs with other singles. SUNDAY NIGHTS LIVE IN TUNE YOUTH MINISTRY Jr. High (6-8 grade) 6-7:30PM in the Great Hall Sunday nights for Jr. High has changed this year as we seek to find more ways for students to connect. We will meet in the gym and some students will choose gym activities, while other students will choose to go to a small room with board games and connection time. Following this time we will bring students together for an ice breaker, and then move to the lodge for Faith Questions. Sunday nights will work like “overtime” from Sunday morning. Questions about faith, about the Bible, life and lessons that we are learning in the morning will be addressed in the evening. Invite friends, and look out for some fun activities! Sr. High 6-7:30PM, the Lodge, doors open at 5:30 to hang out Each week's meeting will include plenty of hangout and game time, an icebreaker-type activity to get things started as a group, worship led by our live youth band, a short message from an adult leader or student volunteer, and small group discussion time.
