SPECIAL EVENT Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide You are invited to join the St. Luke's community for a series of events to learn, share and take action on behalf of women worldwide. Women and girls around the world and right here in Indianapolis, are facing heartbreaking challenges every day. We, as a community, have an opportunity to hear their stories, bear witness to their challenges, believe in the power of transformation, and act in ways that give hope.

Outreach Ministries, UMW, the Spiritual Life Center and several women's book study groups have come together to present this Half the Sky series. From April to November, six events, based on the book and documentary by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, will be offered. The format for each evening will include a showing of a portion of the Half the Sky documentary, a local dynamic speaker, an ethnic dinner catered by a local small business, ethnic music, a Global Market Place, fellowship with a multicultural audience and a helpful list of action steps.

Women’s Bible Study Be Comforted: A Study of the Book of Isaiah Wednesdays, now-April 10, 1-2PM in E105. Isaiah is sometimes referred to as a miniature Bible with regard to its structure. It has 66 chapters just as the Bible has 66 books. There are two divisions within Isaiah—39 chapters in the first and 27 chapters in the second. It is said that the prophet Isaiah is quoted in the New Testament more than all other prophets combined. Why is this? Could it be because Isaiah identifies God as sovereign over creation and history, as holy, as judge and redeemer? Could it be because he writes of a servant through whom God’s redemption will come? Could it be because he envisions the hope of God’s people in a world that needed God’s message— both then and now? Let’s explore and discover what ageless truths are available for our faithful living today. Led by Terri Coe, St. Luke’s Director of Adult Ministries.

2013 INTERNATIONAL ADULT TRAVEL OPPORTUNITY

Holy Land with Rob and Susan Fuquay September 16-25, 2013. This will be a special opportunity to visit the historical and spiritual sites of the Holy Land with our Senior Pastor Rob Fuquay providing the context and spiritual leadership. We will visit Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, stop at the Mount of the Beatitudes and then travel down the Jordan River to the Dead Sea, where will make a stop at the impressive site of Masada. On our way to Jerusalem, we stop at Qum Rum and then spend a day in Bethlehem, visit the Garden of Gethsemene, Wailing Wall, the Via Delorosa, the Holy Church of the Sepulcher and end our week at the traditional site of the Garden Tomb.

This trip will have a special added attraction as Rev. Fuquay will be using this opportunity to video segments to be used as supplementary material to future Disciple study classes.

Those on the trip will get a preview, and in some locations, be part of the taping.

Trip includes round trip airfare, all local transportation, four-star hotels, daily breakfasts and some additional meals. The cost will be approximately $3000/person (double occupancy). CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.

March at The Track March’s virtue is HONESTY. Honesty is important because it builds trust. Honesty is choosing to be truthful in whatever you say and do. What God says is true; He has shown us that time and time again. And that’s one of the reasons we know we can trust God. The monthly memory verse is: “An honest person has respect for the Lord.” (PROVERBS 14:2a, NIV). Living a life of honesty shows that we respect God and the people we care about. We can find a way to be truthful and still careful of the feelings of those we care about.

February at the Mini-Track When you think of the amazing gift God gave us, you just have to say, “Wow!” That’s what we want for our preschoolers this month. We want them to say, “Wow!” We want them to be wowed by the miracles that Jesus performed while he lived among us. We want them to be wowed by the awesomeness of his power. We want them to be wowed by his entrance into Jerusalem, and we want them to be wowed by the fact that he came alive on Easter day. Preschoolers will be learning “Jesus wants to be my friend forever.” Their memory verse is “I am with you always.” (MATTHEW 28:20)

The Easter Bunny will be hopping by St. Luke’s on Saturday, March 30. Your family won’t want to miss the chance to spend the morning playing games, hunting eggs and celebrating the joys of Easter with other families. We’ll gather in the Great Hall at 9:30AM, and the hunt will begin shortly afterwards. Cost is $3/child, and tickets may be purchased the morning of the event.

We’ve committed ourselves to rallying around and supporting our volunteers in new and exciting ways. One of our objectives is to create a multi-tiered system of volunteer opportunities to appeal to a variety of individuals. We’re designing our opportunities to meet not only the time and availability of our volunteers, but their spiritual gifts and talents as well. Is teaching or shepherding not your calling?

KidUnique SMALL GROUP STUDY What if our role as influential adults is to help kids discover who they really are? Proceeds will benefit the St. Luke’s Children’s Music Program; our goal is to raise $2000. This music ministry provides first-class musical instruction, at no cost, to ages ranging from ages 3 1/2 to high school. The children and youth learn to worship and serve God through singing, performing with instruments, and participation in a scripture-based musical. Our fundraiser will also provide the opportunity for youth to participate in the Royal School of Church Music Summer Camp, a trip to Fort Wayne to sing for a wedding, and new music equipment for all children to use.

FAMILY MINISTRIES Marriage Enrichment Marriage is a journey, and the Marriage Enrichment weekend being offered by St. Luke's is designed to enrich that journey. This workshop is an exploration into the positives in a marriage: a guided growth experience. Both in a group and privately, husband and wife are led through a sequential set of communication exercises. This sequence creates learning experiences in which participants are enriched through personal growth. Marriage Enrichment is taking place the weekend of March 8-10, 2013. Cost is $325/couple, which includes two nights stay at the Artists Colony Inn in Nashville, Indiana, breakfasts both mornings, Saturday dinner, and all workshop materials. a) WINDOWS. Windows can be cleaned daily at your pace and time frame.

Exterior windows can be cleaned as weather permits. Supplies are provided.

Family teams and groups of friends welcome! b) LAWN CARE. Watering as needed. Operating the ZTR mower, weed trimming, picking up trash/debris on the lawns. High school age appropriate. Equipment and supplies furnished. c) MULCHING. Springtime brings the need for mulching, which helps conserve moisture for both plants and trees. d) CHURCH VEHICLES. Keep the church vehicles clean inside and out. This kidfriendly job comes furnished with equipment and supplies. e) LIGHTS. Interior and exterior bulb changes depending on experience. Ballast changes-experience necessary. f)

COLUMBARIUM. Keep columbarium area tidy and clean.

g) PAINTING/PATCHING. Exterior/interior. Some experience desired, but will train.

Tools/supplies provided. h) PARKING LOT CARE. Keep all parking areas clean, no trash, curbs clean. i)

HVAC CLEANING. Keeping filters clean and/or changed helps prevent illnesses,

especially in the childcare area. Equipment provided. Will train. j)

INTERIOR EQUIPMENT/FIXTURES. Carts, trash can cleaning would be a huge

help to the facility team. k) GENERAL FACILITY HELP. Small jobs can always be found that a willing soul could perform on an on-call basis.

Our program will feature storyteller Frances Whitener. She will tell stories from her family life in her hometown of Martinsville, VA. These will be humorous tales commenting on the oddities of southern life in the mid-19th century. Frances is a member of the Story Telling Arts of Indiana.

She has been a teller at Indy Parks, libraries, hospitals and nursing homes for adults of all ages and children.

Palm Sunday Later@St. Luke’s presents “When The Cheering Stopped” on Sunday, March 24 at 6PM. This special worship service will feature prophetic preaching on each of the sayings of Jesus on the cross, known as the Seven Last Words from the Cross. Also, inspiring music will further enhance this Palm Sunday worship experience. These seven expressions are traditionally attributed to Jesus during his crucifixion. The seven sayings form part of a Christian meditation that is often used during Lent, Holy Week and Good Friday. The order of the sayings is: 1. Forgiveness - Father forgive them, for they know not what they do (LUKE 23:34).

2. Salvation - Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise (LUKE 23:43).

3. Relationship - Woman, behold your son: behold your mother (JOHN 19:26-27).

The trip will include constructing a house, traveling with kids to the beach, visiting Haitian homes and learning about the culture. This is an added trip to help support two of our own members living in Fondwa for the summer. Alex Moon and Avery Hollenback will be serving the community of Fondwa during the summer months and will be coordinating the trip on the ground in Haiti. Our team is limited to 20 team members. Kids in Mission Kids in Mission stresses the importance of teaching kids they should give back and that they can make a difference by contributing to something bigger than themselves.

Through the many activities we have planned, their eyes and hearts will be opened to people who are different from them but created by the same God. Kids grades K-5 are invited to join Kids in Mission in E107/109 from 6-7:15PM on March 3 as we journey through Lent. Our central activity will be making a “Random Act of Kindness.” On March 17 we will learn about St. Patrick and how, despite all the odds, he spread God’s love to Ireland.

Exploring Spiritual Practices This Lenten season, deepen your journey with the Mystery we call God by doing what Christians have done for centuries. You are invited to explore spiritual practices with the goal of finding at least one that is helpful and meaningful for you. All are simple to learn and can be woven into your daily/weekly schedule. Expect one session each on Journaling and Lectio Divina with a concluding session on Spiritual Types. Members of the Spiritual Life Center Commission will be your guides for this Lenten Journey.

24-Hour Holy Week Prayer Vigil You are invited to make a time of prayer part of your Holy Week experience by participating in the 24-hour Holy Week Prayer Vigil. Stations of the Cross If you have been to Jerusalem’s Old City, you have probably walked the path that Jesus walked on what we now call Holy Thursday and Good Friday. The Catholic Church has taken that journey and created Stations of the Cross. Each Station represents an event in Jesus’ journey to the cross. This year the Spiritual Life Center invites you to travel that path with the help of a devotional guide to more fully experience the final days of Holy Week. Good Friday Labyrinth Walk Labyrinth walking easily lends itself to the image of a journey. As you enter the labyrinth you really aren’t sure where the path will lead, but you hold in your heart the assurance that if you continue to put one foot in front of the other, you will reach the center. Along the way you may release any burdens you carry, pray for yourself and others and ready yourself for Good Friday and Easter. Labyrinth Walk is available on Good Friday, 9AM7PM in Fellowship Hall. Labyrinth painted on the floor of N103/104 is available any time the room is not reserved for other activities (check door reservation card).

Movement, Play and Spirituality Movement: a spiritual practice, a path to clarity, a way to relax, a connection to others, a creativity enhancer, a window to the inner soul, a playful interlude. All that is required from you is the willingness to move and listen to the wisdom of your body, your heart and the others moving around and with you. This experiential class will explore movement, play and spirituality from a variety of traditions including Gabrielle Roth’s 5 Rhythms. The silent auction will include items donated from community companies, as well as hot items like dinners and events with St. Luke’s pastors. St. Luke’s youth will also offer services like babysitting, tutoring, lawn services, spring cleaning, organizing etc. to earn funds to help pay towards mission trips, retreats, and other activities. High School Weekday Small Groups We currently have two weekday small group opportunities for high school students. All high school girls are invited to come to a small group on Tuesdays from 6:30-7:30PM at the Lodge. These groups are a great way to get to know each other, have a place of respite during busy weeks, and discuss your faith with peers. Conversations Around the Scripture Sundays, 9:30–10:30AM in E105. United Methodist Pastor Martin Thielen was asked, “What’s the least I can believe and still be a Christian?” His thoughtful response became the basis of a book that helps us consider what matters most in a life of faith. Thielen begins his book entitled What’s the Least I Can Believe and Still Be Christian by identifying things we need not believe. He concludes the book with ten things he believes we need to understand about Jesus—his identity, priority, work, example, death, resurrection, legacy, and vision for the world. Thielen notes that a great benefit of these beliefs about Jesus is that they provide promising answers to some of life’s questions. The book may be purchased in the Oasis Bookstore. Indoor Open Labyrinth Walk

Sundays, 9:30-10:30AM, Parlor. If you’ve ever had a “bad day” join us for inspiration as we read the story of Marine Corporal Joshua Bleill. Through his story, One Step at a Time—A Young Marine’s Story of Courage, Hope, and a New Life in the NFL, we will follow his journey from enlistment to active duty in Fallujah, Iraq, through two years of rehabilitation needed because of severe injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device struck his vehicle, to his job as community spokesperson for the Indianapolis Colts. Josh discovered that life begins when we embrace our bad days and keep going forward, one step at a time. Book available in the Oasis Bookstore.

Check-In System We are now utilizing a computerized check-in system (CheckPoint) in Children's Ministries. Parents should register their children in this system in The Track area (East Passage).

There are computer kiosks located across from the pager desk in The Track, and staff available to assist you. Once registered, the printer will produce a name badge for each child as well as a corresponding badge for the parent to use when picking up their child(ren). Parents who are missing their name badges will only be allowed to pick up their children by obtaining permission of the children's ministry staff.

Volunteers will not release a child without a badge. The CheckPoint system will provide a greater level of organization during the check-in procedure, improvement in attendance data, and an increase in the efficiency of our overall administration. But most importantly, the automated system will heighten the overall security of children's ministry and increase parental confidence that each child is as safe as possible while within the walls of St. Luke's UMC.

PRESCHOOL & PDO Preschool Classes (9AM-1PM) for three- to five-year olds are offered in a safe and nurturing Christian environment.

All teachers are experienced, qualified, well-trained and strive to maintain strong relationships with the children and their families. Preschool offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum where children may grow socially, creatively, emotionally, cognitively and physically. Parents’ Day Out Classes (9AM-1PM) are offered for children ages 10 months to three years. PDO was established to provide parents of young children time for themselves on a regular basis. Children participate in structured play in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. Opportunities are provided for children to learn beginning social skills while having fun. Outreach, Inc.

Meets Tuesdays, 6-6:30PM This is a program of instruction for music theory, ear training, music history, church history and overall musical training. Participants can earn RSCM ribbons and medals.

The program is open to any singer who participates in the Tuesday evening program—Middle School Singers and The Choristers. Interested singers, grades 3-8, from the community are also welcome.

Outreach, Inc. serves homeless and at-risk youth in the Indianapolis and surrounding areas. Over 400 homeless and at-risk youth have been served since January 2012. Employment, housing and transportation are the three biggest obstacles for the youth served. Outreach, Inc. is in need of donations to purchase Indy Go Bus passes for the youth to go to job interviews, work, doctor appointments, school and the grocery store. Following this time we will bring students together for an ice breaker, and then move to the lodge for Faith Questions. Sunday nights will work like “overtime” from Sunday morning. Questions about faith, about the Bible, life and lessons that we are learning in the morning will be addressed in the evening.

Sr. High 6-7:30PM, the Lodge, doors open at 5:30 to hang out Each week's meeting will include plenty of hangout and game time, an icebreaker-type activity to get things started as a group, worship led by our live youth band, a short message from an adult leader or student volunteer, and small group discussion time. All high school youth and their friends are welcome!
