Happy Birthday St. Luke’s! APRIL 14 In March 1953, 119 men, women and children gathered at the Broad Ripple American Legion Hall to hold their first worship service in what would soon become St. Luke’s Methodist Church. Sixty years and a few more members later, we celebrate the vision and faith of our founders in creating this open community of Christians gathering to seek, celebrate, live and share the love of God for all creation. Join us on Sunday morning, April 14, as we recognize this milestone event and continue the tradition of vision and faith going forward.

Dr. Carver McGriff, St. Luke’s senior pastor from 1967-1993, will deliver the morning message at all three worship services (8:15, 9:30 and 11). We will have birthday cake and cupcakes, and invite you to wear a nametag with a ribbon designating the decade that you started attending St. Luke’s. Add to the festive atmosphere by coming to church in your favorite 1950s style clothing! We look forward to a wonderful morning honoring our past and looking forward to the future.

ADULT EDUCATION To pre-register for a class, go to www.stlukesumc.com/getinvolved/classes, or contact the church office 846-3404. Oasis = Oasis Bookstore and Gift Shop located inside St. Luke’s.

Questions God Asks Us

Wednesdays, April 3–May 22, 9:30-11AM in E105. Religion scholar and author Stephen Prothero discusses each of the major religious traditions creating a helpful guide for anyone who wants to better understand the big questions human beings have asked for millennia—and the disparate paths we are taking to answer them today. God Is Not One creates a new context for understanding religion in the 21st century. The book may be purchased in the Oasis Bookstore. Led by Dr. Marion Miller, Pastor, Later@St. Luke’s.

Thursdays, April 11–May 9, 6:30–8PM, The Lodge. Register online at www.stlukesumc.com/adultministries. We often look to the Bible as the book of answers. How often, though, do we consider the challenging questions God asks? Author Trevor Hudson notes that Jesus was asked 183 questions in the Gospels, but only directly answered three. In Questions God Asks Us, we're encouraged to focus on the quest rather than a resolution. "I thought the Bible existed to give me solutions to my everyday concerns and dilemmas," writes Hudson. "Then I realized I might be approaching God and the Bible from the wrong direction. Questions God Asks Us offers a fresh approach for personal devotions and a unique discussion tool for Bible study. It's sure to bless anyone longing for a meaningful, growing relationship with God. The book is available in the Oasis Bookstore. Led by Terri Coe, St. Luke’s Director of Adult Ministries.

An Introduction to Prayer Tuesdays, April 9, 16, & 23 or Wednesdays, April 10, 17, & 24, 12-1PM in N101-102. Register online at www.stlukesumc.com/adultministries. This class will be a place to explore new, simple ways to pray. No experience needed. You will not be put on the spot. We will learn some methods and practice both together and at home. Hopefully, you will leave this class feeling comfortable and confident in how you can talk with God. No book needed. Led by Susan Fuquay, Associate Director of Adult Discipleship.

Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide Wednesdays, April 10–May 22, 7-8:30PM in E105 Register online at www.stlukesumc.com/adultministries Pulitzer Prize winners Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn reveal how a little help can transform the lives of women and girls around the world. The book argues that the oppression of women worldwide is "the paramount moral challenge" of the present era, much as the fight against slavery was in the past. Kristof and WuDunn combine women’s stories with practical suggestions for advancing the rights of women on a global level. Drawing on the breadth of their reporting experience, the authors depict our world with anger, sadness, clarity and, ultimately, hope.

In addition to reading and discussing the book, class participants will have the opportunity to attend two of the six “Half the Sky” presentations sponsored by St. Luke’s Outreach Ministries, UMW, the Spiritual Life Center and several women’s book study groups. Information will be shared in class, or see the information on the cover of this issue of the Communion Monthly. Led by Bethany Roth, St. Luke’s Member.

Women’s Bible Study—The Shack

Discover Your God-Given Gifts

Wednesdays, April 17–May 8, 1-2PM in E105. If you or someone you know has asked the question, “Where is God in a world filled with so much pain?” please join us as we discuss this question and others raised from the reading of The Shack. In this New York Times best-seller, Mackenzie Allen Philips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation, and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment, he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What does he experience that changes his world forever? The book is available in the Oasis Bookstore. Led by Terri Coe, St. Luke’s Director of Adult Ministries.

Choose one of three two-week options in 2013: • Mondays, April 22 & 29, 7-8:30PM, E212 • Wednesdays, May 8 & 15, 7-8:30PM, E212

GREEN MINISTRIES New Rules for Energy Audits Energize Indiana has changed the rules and will now offer free energy audits to anyone whose home was built prior to January 1, 2010. A skilled representative will come to your home, do a careful inventory and leave a report and a box full of energy-saving products. There is no charge and you are not pressured to buy anything. The win/win is that St. Luke’s earns $25 for each audit to use in green projects around our facility. We have already earned almost $5000 and are talking with the Trustees about a green project. You can go on www.stlukesumc.com Green Ministry home page and follow the link to request an audit appointment, or pick up a form in the church office or at the Recycling Center in the Central Passage. Place the competed form in Betty Brandt’s mailbox and you will then receive a call from Energize Indiana to schedule an appointment.

Each month, you may find a St. Luke’s Outreach team serving breakfast or dinner, or working in the food pantry. During the summer, FPCC sponsors “Art in the City.” Art in the City is a daily summer program for students (K-12) who receive the opportunity to learn the gift of creativity. Teachers from the Herron School of Art assist in giving students a hands-on experience in creating many different mediums of art. Some of the artwork created this summer will be on display in our art gallery this fall. Our financial contributions will go toward helping this very important ministry. If you would like to assist as a counselor during the summer or help prepare lunches, please contact Don Cochran at dcochran@cdsins.com.

Lotts Creek Community School, Hazard, Kentucky

GLOBAL WORK TRIPS Online registration at www.stlukesumc.com.

Home rehab, educational support and social services work August 18-August 23 LEADER: Terry Collins COST: $100 (+transportation) Informational Meeting on Sunday, May 19, 10:30AM in E213.

Fondwa, Haiti—June 9-16, 2013

Lotts Creek Community School is the last of nearly 100 “settlement schools” built in the Appalachian Mountains in the early part of the 20th century. These schools were created to provide much-needed education where it was unavailable. Not only did the settlement schools provide education, but also many social services for the region. Today, Lotts Creek is the only school still operating in this manner. The services available include housing repairs, clothing, a food bank, and a medical assistance and wellness program at no cost to eligible members of the community.

Join Pastor David on a construction trip to Fondwa, Haiti. The trip will include constructing a house, traveling with kids to the beach, visiting Haitian homes and learning about the culture. This is an added trip to help support two of our own members living in Fondwa for the summer. Alex Moon and Avery Hollenback will be serving the community of Fondwa during the summer months and will be coordinating the trip on the ground in Haiti. Our team is limited to 20 team members. You can save your spot with a deposit of $200. If you have any questions, please contact Jamalyn at williamsonj@stlukesumc.com.

Our volunteers will assist in the many services the community offers. This trip is a good fit for a variety of passions. The team will reside in historic dormitories that once housed students. For more information about the ministry, check out http://www.lottscreek.org/service.html. If you would like to sign up for this opportunity to serve please go to www.stlukesumc.com/outreach/national. If you have questions about the trip, please contact Terry Collins at 2004fenway@sbcglobal.netor 399-6098.

Lyle Eaton Exhibit in April’s “Visions” Gallery

“God Is Not One” by Stephen Prothero The Tuesday Afternoon Women’s Spiritual Book Study has chosen to explore Prothero’s thesis that religions seek similar truths: they just have different ways of getting there. Christians regard sin as the problem and see salvation as the solution. Muslims define the problem as pride that can only be conquered by submission. Buddhists seek to overcome suffering, while Christians regard suffering as ennobling, which is why Christians aren't trying to achieve nirvana. Buddhists, unlike Christians, aren't looking for salvation since they don't believe in sin. Neither do Confucians. And while Jews and Muslims speak of sin, they are not all that interested in salvation from their sins. Every Tuesday, 1-2:3OPM in the Spiritual Life Center. Contact is JoAnne Waeltz (317-872-0895).

Krista Tippett’s “Being” Show If you are a fan of Krista Tippett’s radio show that airs at 7AM every Sunday morning on FM90.1, you will want to join the discussion of the show on Sunday mornings at 9:30AM in the Spiritual Life Center. Krista interviews authors, spiritual leaders, storytellers, scientists, professors, political activists and musicians. The discussions are as lively and interesting as the show. All are welcome and encouraged to listen to the show prior to attending class. The show is available beginning the prior Thursday at www.onbeing.org.

“Global Environment” is the theme of Lyle Eaton’s photographic exhibit. Some of his prints are on assignment with National Geographic Photographers. See UMM Breakfast information on page 22 for another opportunity with Lyle.

Mark Lampe is April’s “Identity” Gallery Artist

Mark has been employed in the highly creative and technical fields of industrial design and marketing, and has been lucky to find ways to inject his inventiveness into his work. Lately he realized that he needed a more expressive and unrestricted venue for his creative energies and started working on large abstract paintings. This exhibit documents Mark's experimentation with highly textural, colorful, fluid works that are intended to extend the painting off the panel and evoke feelings of warmth and serenity. See the exhibit in the “Identity” Gallery for the month of April with a “meet the artist” reception on April 14, 10:30AM-12:30PM.

BODY / MIND / SPIRIT

Movement, Play and Spirituality

Movement: a spiritual practice, a path to clarity, a way to relax, a connection to others, a creativity enhancer, a window to the inner soul, a playful interlude. All that is required from you is the willingness to move and listen to the wisdom of your body, your heart and the others moving around and with you. This experiential class will explore movement, play and spirituality from a variety of traditions including Gabrielle Roth’s 5 Rhythms. Come ready to move and play with leader Amy Barnes, Life Coach and Therapist. Adults 18 to 108 are welcome. Every 2nd Sunday, April 14 and May 12, 4-5:15PM in N103/104. SUNDAY MORNING CLASSES

Conversations Around the Scripture Sundays, 9:30–10:30AM in E105. United Methodist Pastor Martin Thielen was asked, “What’s the least I can believe and still be a Christian?” His thoughtful response became the basis of a book that helps us consider what matters most in a life of faith. Thielen begins his book entitled What’s the Least I Can Believe and Still Be Christian by identifying things we need not believe. He concludes the book with ten things he believes we need to understand about Jesus—his identity, priority, work, example, death, resurrection, legacy, and vision for the world. Thielen notes that a great benefit of these beliefs about Jesus is that they provide promising answers to some of life’s questions. The book may be purchased in the Oasis Bookstore. Led by Gary Chambers, Brian Earnhart, and Craig Overmyer, St. Luke’s Members.

The Track Registration Have you registered your children for Sunday morning small groups? You can register them online at www.stlukesumc.com/children/sundaymorning. Questions? email us at thetrack@stlukesumc.com.

The Track: Facebook & Twitter You can now "like" The Track on Facebook at St. Luke's UMC—The Track to get up-to-date information about everything happening in Children's Ministries. You can also follow The Track on Twitter@StLukesTrack, or text to 40404 and type “follow @stlukestrack” to receive tweets as text messages.

Helping Hands Needed Want to help Children’s Ministries grow? We’d like to form a team of volunteers to support our growth by helping us with creative projects. These projects range from organizational to artistic. If you have some spare time throughout the week, chances are we have a need that could meet your talents and availability. If you’d like to volunteer on our team, email thetrack@stlukesumc.com.

Commission on Children’s Ministries COCM is a group of individuals, diverse in age and talents, who support the Children’s Department by coordinating and organizing four-six major events throughout the year that serve and celebrate the children of St. Luke’s and their families. The commission meets monthly to plan and prepare for upcoming events and also fellowship with each other and members of the Children’s Ministries team. If you’re looking for a way to support Children’s Ministries outside of Sunday morning, we invite you to consider joining this commission in 2013! For more information, please contact Amy Myhand at myhanda@stlukesumc.com

Check-In System We are now utilizing a computerized check-in system (CheckPoint) in Children's Ministries. Parents should register their children in this system in The Track area (East Passage). There are computer kiosks located across from the pager desk in The Track, and staff available to assist you. Once registered, the printer will produce a name badge for each child as well as a corresponding badge for the parent to use when picking up their child(ren). Parents who are missing their name badges will only be allowed to pick up their children by obtaining permission of the children's ministry staff. Volunteers will not release a child without a badge. The CheckPoint system will provide a greater level of organization during the check-in procedure, improvement in attendance data, and an increase in the efficiency of our overall administration. But most importantly, the automated system will heighten the overall security of children's ministry and increase parental confidence that each child is as safe as possible while within the walls of St. Luke's UMC.

PRESCHOOL & PDO Preschool Classes (9AM-1PM) for three- to five-year olds are offered in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. All teachers are experienced, qualified, well-trained and strive to maintain strong relationships with the children and their families. Preschool offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum where children may grow socially, creatively, emotionally, cognitively and physically. Children must be 3 years old by 9/1/2013 to enroll for the 2013-2014 school year.

Parents’ Day Out Classes (9AM-1PM) are offered for children ages 10 months to three years. PDO was established to provide parents of young children time for themselves on a regular basis. Children participate in structured play in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. Opportunities are provided for children to learn beginning social skills while having fun. Children must be 10 months by 9/1/2013 to enroll for the 2013-2014 school year.
