Africa University Choir St. Luke’s will welcome the Africa University Choir to worship on June 9. We have had a long history of supporting AU through the years. Ten years ago, St. Luke’s funded a dormitory on the AU campus. Since then, St. Luke's continues to be the greatest giving congregation in Indiana to the University. We are excited to have the choir join us for worship, featuring students from various African countries. As part of their U.S. tour, the choir is serving as ambassadors for the University as they lay the foundation for a successful campaign to raise funds for AU to endow a faculty chair in Agriculture and to endow several student scholarships. On June 9, we will take a special offering to help achieve this goal. We look forward to a blessed morning of worship with the Africa University Choir.
JUNE 2013
MONTHLY
COMMUNION Stuff a Bus Summer Outreach Effort St. Luke's partnership with Fox Hill Elementary School has made us aware of the great need for school supplies and support services by students in the surrounding Washington Township schools, not just Fox Hill. Seventy-five percent of the students in the four Washington Township elementary schools closest to St. Luke’s qualify for free or reduced lunch. That is over 2,000 students in the area surrounding the church. In an effort to address this need, St. Luke’s will be hosting a “Back to School Extravaganza” on August 4. This event will provide schools supplies, clothing, food and other services to children in need. The goal is to provide a onestop shop where these families can find many of the items they need to get the school year off to a great start. Children get a huge boost to their self esteem when arriving at school the first day with a backpack full of supplies as opposed to being handed supplies by a counselor once they arrive. The kids in Washington Township are not supported by any of the other fundraising/school supply drives in the city. This is a large undertaking to collect schools supplies for over 2,000 students. So for our Summer Outreach project, we will "Stuff a Bus" in July! A Washington Township bus will be here to collect all the school supplies needed for the students. You can get involved by picking up a tag on Sunday morning starting June 16 (or in the church office) for one of the 2000 students who will not have a backpack to start school. If you work for a business that would like to participate, please let us know and we will bring the bus to you! Questions? Contact Buffy Perkins at buffyaperkins@sbcglobal.net or Jamalyn Peigh Williamson at williamsonj@stlukesumc.com.
CAR WASH On the morning of Sunday, June 16 teens from our Youth Ministry will run a Car Wash at St. Luke’s to benefit the Peru Mission Trip. Teens and adult leaders will be washing cars for ANY donation. You can drive your car through a washing station OR park it in the “wash while I worship” section to have it washed while you go to the church service! We hope to see you and your wheels on June 16.

Beginning Prayer Class
Sundays, June 2–July 7, 9:30-10:30AM in E105. Have you ever wondered what your next step could be with regard to your faith journey? Deciding to take the next step along the discipleship path can raise several questions. What does it mean to follow Jesus? To be Christ-like? What does this mean within the United Methodist tradition? What are specific practices that I can use to help me grow? How can I become comfortable sharing my faith with others? What are spiritual gifts? Which ones do I possess? How can I use them to make a difference within St. Luke’s or Indianapolis or places around the world where St. Luke’s is at work?
Wednesdays, July 10-31, Noon-1PM in N101/102. This class will help you learn how to take a few minutes a day to be quiet and find rest in God. We will watch a short DVD which features highly respected authors to learn how silent, reflective prayer can be a way to receiving God’s guidance. We will discuss our thoughts and practice silent prayer together. You do not need to know anything about prayer to come. You will not be put on the spot. Each participant will need the book Be Still and Know, available in Oasis Bookstore or at the first class. Facilitated by Susan Fuquay. Register at www.stlukesumc.com under adult ministries.
With members of the Conversations Around the Scripture Sunday morning class, gain insights and share thoughts that can help all participants grow deeper with regard to the essentials of Christian living in today’s society. Utilize a daily workbook and companion reader entitled A Disciple’s Path. Materials can be purchased in Oasis. Facilitated by Craig Overmyer, St. Luke’s member.

seek
A Disciple’s Path
Disciple Bible study is a life-transforming over-view of the Bible. The Fast Track version runs 12 weeks for the Old Testament, and an additional 12 weeks for the New Testament. No Bible knowledge is needed. A strong commitment to reading the Bible daily or listening to the Bible on audio CDs is needed. At the end of this class you will understand the whole story of the Bible and how it fits together, grow in your faith, and have new friends.
St. Luke’s will be offering Disciple I, Disciple I Fast Track (both Old and New Testaments), Disciple I Online, Disciple II, III and IV classes—all beginning in late August. There will be a large selection of times and classes available including small groups in homes, groups at St. Luke’s, options with childcare, and breaks for holidays. Watch for information in the West Passage on Sundays, and online at www.stlukesumc.com/adultministries. Plan ahead to help us reach our goal of 500 in Disciple next fall. This may be just what you are looking for!

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.
May at The Track This summer we’re heading back to Base Camp where we’ll learn from the life of Jesus, his teachings, and his example. These are the basics: Wisdom—I need to make the wise choice; Faith—I can trust God no matter what; Friendship—I should treat others the way I want to be treated. When we return to these ideas, we can begin to discover what God is doing in us to change the world around us. The monthly memory verse is: “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and men.” (LUKE 2:52, NIrV) When we respond to God, we will see ourselves develop in wisdom, faith and friendship.
May at the Mini-Track The theme for June at the Mini-Track is “Made by God.” God made everything. Everything! Pretty exciting, isn’t it? It’s that excitement, wonder and awe that we want to share with our preschoolers this month. Each week they will hear about another part of creation. The memory verse is, “God created the heavens and the earth.” (GENESIS 1:1)
“Take Five” A great deal of reflection and discussion among St. Luke's Children's Ministry team is spent on ways to better connect to the parents in our church. We want to take every opportunity to not only inform you of what your children are learning, but also to encourage you in your role of spiritual leaders in your homes. At the same time, we know what busy lives you lead and we want to be very respectful of your time. Therefore, we've created "Take Five," a midweek blog which will only take around five minutes to read. The blog, delivered via email around lunchtime on Tuesdays, will be a concise reflection of how you can help your child connect Sunday morning's virtues to what happens in their life the rest of the week and beyond. If you're a parent in our email database, you'll automatically begin receiving the Take Five blog. If you're not currently receiving emails from Children's Ministry and would like to subscribe to either Take Five or the Track Parent Newsletter, please email myhanda@stlukesumc.com
St. Luke’s Family Night at Victory Field On Saturday night, June 22, join with other St. Luke's families in cheering on the Indians at Victory Field! We'll be sitting out in the lawn; reserve your spot by contacting Dave at williamsond@stlukesumc.com. Game time is 7:05PM, but come early to take advantage of Signature Saturday— an autograph session and entertainment featuring Mad Chad will be available at the game. Autographs will take place from 6-8PM, limit one autograph per person.
Discount Holiday World Tickets Planning a trip to Holiday World this summer? Consider going between June 28 and July 16 and get discounted tickets and support the District Church Camp in Santa Claus, Indiana. Tickets are $34 each, which is a savings of $11 a ticket. Holiday World then donates $5 a ticket to the campground. If interested, contact Jennifer Hampton at 317-758-5199 or jshampton515@gmail.com.
Register Now for SpringHill Day Camp at St. Luke's July 8-12, 9AM-4PM. If your child has completed Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th grade this summer, then they are in for an amazing adventure! St. Luke's is partnering with SpringHill (www.springhillcamps.com) for five full days of fun! From the Climbing Wall to the Flying Squirrel or Six Square to wild water games or stretching their creativity through cool crafts—they’ll have more fun than they can imagine, while making great friends and learning a few things about God and themselves. Cost to attend is $159/camper. Registration is available through http://springhillcamps.com/IN/daycamp/. Please contact Amy Myhand at myhanda@stlukesumc.com with any questions.
Summer Splash 2013—Kingdom Rock July 22-26, 9AM-Noon. This July, Summer Splash will transform St. Luke's into a mighty majestic castle where kids will learn to stand strong for God! At Summer Splash 2013, we'll learn that God’s victorious power isn’t a fairy tale—and it will change kids' lives forever. Each day at Summer Splash, kids move through activity stations with their Kingdom Crews (small groups). Every station is intentionally designed to reinforce the daily Bible Point in a hands-on, interactive way that keeps kids engaged. Three year olds through those now completing 3rd grade may register as a student. Upper elementary students who are now completing 4th and 5th grades may register to participate in Rock Solid Day Camp—a newly designed option just for older students. REGISTRATION IS OPEN NOW—both online and in person Sunday mornings. Questions? Contact the Summer Splash directors at summersplash@stlukesumc.com or 317-8463404 x328.

SUMMER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Summer Splash: July 22-26
The Track keeps on running right through the summer months for both preschool and elementary children, but we like to give our school-year volunteers a break. We’re looking for enthusiastic, energetic adults or older youth to help the summer run smoothly. Volunteering in the summer is an easy way to “test drive” serving in Children’s Ministries. Please consider a short-term commitment that could be tailored to your availability. There are classroom and hospitality opportunities available at both the 9:30 and 11AM services. To learn more, please contact thetrack@ stlukesumc.com. You can see the available slots and sign up at www.stlukesumc.com/getinvolved/volunteer.
Our goal is to grow Summer Splash to record numbers this year! But we can only do that with your help. We need around 200 adult and youth volunteers to make Summer Splash an unforgettable experience for kids. Jr. High and Sr. High youth may volunteer as youth assistants. And any adult may volunteer in a number of different ways. Love helping kids discover God’s love for them? Want to work behind the scenes to create an unforgettable environment? No matter your area of expertise or availability, there is a place for you at Summer Splash! To read descriptions of job opportunities and to register as a volunteer, visit the Summer Programming page at www.stlukesumc.com
SpringHill Day Camp: July 8-12
Not available the week of Summer Splash, but still want to help? It takes a large amount of supplies to create an unforgettable week. Check out our Supply Donation List at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090D44AEAC2EA46summer to see where you can help.
There are several opportunities to volunteer and support our first ever SpringHill day camp experience here at St. Luke’s. Although SpringHill is staffing the week, there are still opportunities to join in the fun by helping with registration for a few hours on Monday morning, providing meals for camp staff and possibly even housing out-of-town counselors. There are also opportunities to serve as a “Counselor in Training” for youth 15 years and older. Please contact Amy Myhand at myhanda@stlukesumc.com for more information or to volunteer in any of these roles.

GREEN MINISTRIES Eco-Habit of the Month All of us know more than we put into practice. Changing habits is hard. Supporting each other helps. So the Green Ministry has decided to feature an Eco-Habit of the Month. If we all practice it for a month, we can change our behaviors and make a difference. The Eco-Habit for June is “Visit a Farmers’ Market.” Eating Local is a popular summer adventure. Farmers’ Markets are available all over town. Meet the people who grow your food, buy something new and different, splurge on homemade pasta, taste honey made by local bees. Take the whole family for an outing, then come home and cook together. Who knew collard greens could taste so good! www.farmersmarketonline.com/fm/Indiana.htm. Stop by Mini Farmers' Market outside of St. Luke's Main Doors on Sunday morning, June 9.
HEALTH MINISTRIES Showing “Forks Over Knives” Documentary This 2011 documentary examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that affect us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods. Features powerful research done by T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D from Cornell University and Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., MD. Thursday, May 30, 6:30-8:30PM in the Parlor. Sponsored by the Health Ministry, Healing Partners and the Green Ministry. No fee or registration.
Imagine a place where God is seen and heard through expressions of movement, media, and music—come worship at Later@St. Luke’s on Sunday evenings at 6PM in Robertson Chapel. Hear contemporary Christian, gospel and jazz music featuring the Later Band and Vocals, along with a challenging and thought-provoking message. Today, Lotts Creek is the only school still operating in this manner. The services available include housing repairs, clothing, a food bank, and a medical assistance and wellness program at no cost to eligible members of the community. PRESCHOOL & PDO Preschool Classes (9AM-1PM) for three- to five-year olds are offered in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. All teachers are experienced, qualified, well-trained and strive to maintain strong relationships with the children and their families. Preschool offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum where children may grow socially, creatively, emotionally, cognitively and physically. Children must be 3 years old by 9/1/2013 to enroll for the 2013-2014 school year.
Check-In System
Parents’ Day Out
We are now utilizing a computerized check-in system (CheckPoint) in Children's Ministries. Parents should register their children in this system in The Track area (East Passage). There are computer kiosks located across from the pager desk in The Track, and staff available to assist you. Once registered, the printer will produce a name badge for each child as well as a corresponding badge for the parent to use when picking up their child(ren). Parents who are missing their name badges will only be allowed to pick up their children by obtaining permission of the children's ministry staff. Volunteers will not release a child without a badge. The CheckPoint system will provide a greater level of organization during the check-in procedure, improvement in attendance data, and an increase in the efficiency of our overall administration. But most importantly, the automated system will heighten the overall security of children's ministry and increase parental confidence that each child is as safe as possible while within the walls of St. Luke's UMC.
Classes (9AM-1PM) are offered for children ages 10 months to three years. PDO was established to provide parents of young children time for themselves on a regular basis. Children participate in structured play in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. Opportunities are provided for children to learn beginning social skills while having fun. Children must be 10 months by 9/1/2013 to enroll for the 2013-2014 school year.
Commission on Children’s Ministries COCM is a group of individuals, diverse in age and talents, who support the Children’s Department by coordinating and organizing four-six major events throughout the year that serve and celebrate the children of St. Luke’s and their families. The commission meets monthly to plan and prepare for upcoming events and also fellowship with each other and members of the Children’s Ministries team. If you’re looking for a way to support Children’s Ministries outside of Sunday morning, we invite you to consider joining this commission in 2013! HIGH SCHOOL—WAKE UP AT THE LODGE 9:30-10:30AM, The Lodge Café (upstairs). This summer, we will be working our way through some Bible passages and breaking down what they mean in today’s context. What does it look like to love God, give your life over to Him, and still have to go to school, do chores, and ask your parents for a ride? We are meant to live our lives to serve God, but we don’t always have total control over the current situation. We’ll break down how you can be a true servant of God and still be a teenager, too. SUNDAY NIGHTS LIVE IN TUNE YOUTH MINISTRY Over the summer, our youth ministry takes a break from normal evening youth group. We will continue to meet on Sunday mornings for teaching, at regular intervals for hangouts, special events and other fun activities. However, with mission trips and family travels for many of you, we relax our weekly Sunday evening schedule to make room for special events and family time. We will resume our weekly Sunday night youth activities on August 11 as we ramp up for the new school year!
