The Red Shirts Are Coming! 5th Annual Servant Day will take place on Saturday, August 3 Don’t miss the opportunity to join your St. Luke’s family in working together in the community. There are 8,760 hours in a year. This is an opportunity to spend just four of those hours in service to others, sharing God’s love while making new friends. The day will begin with breakfast in the Great Hall, followed by prayer and a rousing send-off, after which teams will be dispersed throughout Pike and Washington Townships. There will be service projects in and around St. Luke’s, at schools and daycare centers, and other community agencies. All ages and abilities are encouraged to participate. There is something for everyone!
Sign-up tables will be in the Narthex on Sunday, July 14, and in the West Passage on the following two Sundays, July 21 and 28. You will also be able to sign up online at www.stlukesumc.com. Friends and family who are not members of St. Luke’s are welcome to participate. Sunday, July 28, has been designated Red Shirt Sunday. Everyone who has one of the red shirts that have been given out on previous Servant Days is encouraged to wear it. Let’s make this the biggest and most successful Servant Day yet!

COMMUNION Painters Needed! We're giving our children's area a new look this summer, updating classrooms and hallways to create an exciting learning environment for kids. As part of this process, we'll need LOTS of volunteer painters! We'll be painting the weeks of June 24-July 5, July 15-19, & July 29-August 16. You can sign up for any length of time (for a solid week, for one day each week, for a single day even). Summer Outreach St. Luke’s Outreach has committed to partner with Nora, Fox Hill, Springmill and Greenbriar Elementary Schools to help connect with the 75% of students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. That is over 2,000 students in the area surrounding the church. Our hope is to share that we are in their neighborhood and rooting for their success. In an effort to address this need, St. Luke’s will be hosting the “Back to School Extravaganza” at our church August 4. This event will provide schools supplies, clothing, food and other services to children at these four schools. The goal is to provide a one-stop-shop where students can get the school year off to a great start. As you can imagine, children get a huge boost to their self esteem when arriving at school the first day with a backpack full of supplies as opposed to being handed supplies by a counselor once they arrive at school. These schools are not directly supported by any of the other fundraising/school supply drives in the city. This is a large undertaking to collect schools supplies for over 2,000 students. We are asking you get involved in this effort by sponsoring a child for $25 to get them the supplies they need, or you can pick up a supply list at church (or download it at www.stlukesumc.com/outreach) and bring donations into the main office. You can do this at any time during July. Your $25 (or more) donations may also be made online. If you work for a business that would like to participate, please let us know and we will bring a collection bin to you! Questions? Global Leadership Summit St. Luke’s is a partnering church with the Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit held in multiple sites across the country this August 8 & 9. Beginning Prayer Class Wednesdays, July 10-31, Noon-1PM in N101/102. This class will help you learn how to take a few minutes a day to be quiet and find rest in God. We will watch a short DVD which features highly respected authors to learn how silent, reflective prayer can be a way to receiving God’s guidance. We will discuss our thoughts and practice silent prayer together. You do not need to know anything about prayer to come. You will not be put on the spot. CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.
July at The Track This summer we’re getting BACK TO BASICS to learn from the life of Jesus, his teachings and his example. These are the basics: Wisdom—I need to make the wise choice; Faith—I can trust God no matter what; Friendship—I should treat others the way I want to be treated. When we focus on these ideas, we can also begin to discover what God is doing in us to change the world around us. We’ll learn from Jesus’ teachings that we, too, can make a difference. The monthly memory verse is: “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill can’t be hidden.” (MATTHEW 5:14, NIrV) When we choose to love God by loving others, you will help God’s love shine on all people.
July at the Mini-Track The theme for July at the Mini-Track is “Up for the Challenge.” Are you up for the challenge? That’s what we’re asking preschoolers this month. And, you know what? We’re all up for any challenge because we can trust God. We’re sharing two stories this month that show just how great God is at keeping promises.
“Take Five” A great deal of reflection and discussion among St. Luke's Children's Ministry team is spent on ways to better connect to the parents in our church. We want to take every opportunity to not only inform you of what your children are learning, but also to encourage you in your role of spiritual leaders in your homes. At the same time, we know what busy lives you lead and we want to be very respectful of your time. Therefore, we've created "Take Five," a midweek blog which will only take around five minutes to read. The blog, delivered via email around lunchtime on Tuesdays, will be a concise reflection of how you can help your child connect Sunday morning's virtues to what happens in their life the rest of the week and beyond. If you're a parent in our email database, you'll automatically begin receiving the Take Five blog. Summer Splash 2013—Kingdom Rock July 22-26, 9AM-Noon. This July, Summer Splash will transform St. Luke's into a mighty majestic castle where kids will learn to stand strong for God! At Summer Splash 2013, we'll learn that God’s victorious power isn’t a fairy tale— and it will change kids' lives forever. Each day at Summer Splash, kids move through activity stations with their Kingdom Crews (small groups). Every station is intentionally designed to reinforce the daily Bible Point in a hands-on, interactive way that keeps kids engaged. Three year olds through those now completing 3rd grade may register as a student. Upper elementary students who are now completing 4th and 5th grades may register to participate in Rock Solid Day Camp—a newly designed option just for older students.

Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages, step right up and prepare to help the children of St. Luke’s produce the biggest, largest most gigantic (yes, BIGGER than a circus elephant) under the big top children’s musical ever! A group of individuals is needed to help with costumes, set design, set building, lighting and general creativeness. Are YOU that person!? This circus-themed musical will involve ALL children of the St. Luke’s Children’s Ministries (not just the choir kids), Grades K–5, and some preschool children. The Elderberries annual summer celebration indoor picnic will be Thursday, July 11 at Oak Hill Mansion (5801 E. 116th St., Carmel). This will be a catered dinner featuring fried chicken and fried biscuits with apple butter. The cost will be $12/person. Dinner will be served at 5:30PM. Please come early. Sidetracked is a group of friends who enjoy singing and playing music together. GREEN MINISTRIES Eco-Habit of the Season All of us know more than we put into practice. Changing habits is hard. Supporting each other helps. So the Green Ministry has decided to feature an Eco-Habit of the Season. If we all practice it for three months, we can change our behaviors and make a difference. Eating Local is a popular summer adventure. Farmers’ Markets are available all over town (www.farmersmarketonline.com/ fm/Indiana.htm). Meet the people who grow your food, buy something new and different, try some homemade pasta, taste honey made by Hoosier bees. Encourage your new habit by visiting a Farmer’s Market at least five times. Have a vendor sign your entry card (pick up card at Recycling Center in Central Passage) and return the card to the container at the Communication Center in the church office. You are then eligible to win a special prize at the Locally Grown Pitch-in on August 10. (Don’t have to be present to win, but we’d love to have you come! )
Locally Grown Pitch-In Make something which includes at least one locally grown ingredient and come to our Third Annual Pitch-In to celebrate the goodness of God’s creation. Bring 20 copies of your recipe to give to interested cooks. In addition, the Green Ministry will post online electronic copies of popular recipes. Have fun eating interesting food, enjoying conversation and listening to the music of Sarah Grain. Sarah Graub married Frances and Louie Cain’s (former St. Luke’s Associate Pastor) grandson and they became the Grains. They live communally and sustainably, and Sarah composes her own music. St. Luke’s & Habitat for Humanity Build
Global Outreach has decided to honor the 100 work trips that St. Luke’s member Ken Hollis took during his life by naming this the Hollis House. Ken (pictured, right, at a Habitat build) was instrumental in getting St. Luke's involved in the first Habitat project many years ago. If you would like to make a contribution in his memory, please send it to the office marked Hollis Habitat. We plan to have our first panel build on August 3 during Servant Day in the church parking lot. Sign ups have begun. Beginning July 28 you will be able to sign up online and in the West Passage for the house build. SAWs The SAWs (Servants at Work) team has been hard at work since spring building wheelchair ramps for folks who have been “trapped” at home due to mobility issues. Volunteering on Saturdays for this ministry combines fellowship and working together with your family members (grandparents, parents and kids over 12). You will experience immediate results that yield benefits both ways. The construction teams feel more blessed than the recipients. There are several aspects of this Outreach that you can volunteer for: • Telephone screeners call prospective clients and collect information so we can prioritize each referral. • Surveyors go to prospective sites and design ramps for each individual residence. • Prefabrication and loading trailers is done on Thursday mornings for the ramps planned for the upcoming Saturday. • Installing/building is done mostly on Saturday mornings. Sierra Leone Health Partner Mission Trips
Caberet, Haiti—January 5-12, 2014
Sierra Leone Health Partner teams from St. Luke’s UMC Indianapolis and other churches have been serving the Kissy UMC hospital in Freetown Sierra Leone since 2007. We are happy to announce that in June 2013 a new 48bed mother-child facility opened. In keeping with our mission to help improve the services at UMC Kissy Hospital, we will be sending teams to Sierra Leone in January and February of 2014. Individuals who will help us meet our goals of the mission trip will most likely be those who have expertise as nurses with education skills, midwives, hospital or practice administrators, nurse practitioners or physicians, persons with ultrasound expertise and those with general maintenance of large buildings and engineering skills. Experienced team leaders will be on site during all trip dates. Local transportation will be arranged and is included in the cost. Local hotels will house all teams.
Gary and Kay Walla have been working in Haiti for 12 years. During this time they helped St. Luke’s develop a relationship with Dr. Vladimir Roseau while he was in medical school. After graduation, Dr. Vlad has worked to serve the people of his country, Haiti. This trip is to assist Dr. Vlad in his work with mobile clinic health care. Mobile clinics are when a physician changes locations each day. All doctors and nurses are welcome to help bring health care to the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. Not a doctor? Neither are the Wallas! But there are many support roles available to help make a difference. Oh, and did we mention, there are hot showers?!

WILDMAN ADVENTURES—SAWS Our third Monthly Adventure will be performing service in the community. The New Warriors of Indiana and Ohio have teamed up with Servants at Work, Inc. (SAWs) to help on a Ramp Build Project July 18 and 20. You can sign up for either project or both. There is no charge for this adventure. Working with SAWs project leaders, we will build wheelchair ramps to provide persons with disabilities and people with conditions of aging access to their world and remain in their communities. PROJECT ONE will be at Second Presbyterian Church on Thursday, July 18, 8:30AM-Noon. We will organize materials, including some pre-building, for the on-site Saturday construction. PROJECT TWO is Saturday, July 20 is when we unload, stage, assemble and build the ramp on site (location to be announced) from 8AM-1PM. The Wildman Adventures Service Adventure will construct a high quality, removable and reusable wooden wheelchair ramp for an individual in the community who cannot otherwise afford to free themselves from the imprisonment of their own homes. There are many tasks that need to be performed, and we know this will provide you with a fulfilling opportunity to serve someone less fortunate. Peru Mission Trip—July 19-31
High School Weekday Small Groups
A group of 28 high school youth and adult leaders will be traveling on a mission trip to Peru for 13 days this month. This group of passionate servants will work alongside the Shipibo people of Peru while staying on a houseboat on the Ucayalli River (a tributary of the Amazon). They will work on a range of projects including water purification processes, building churches, and playing sports games with community kids. All of these projects will increase the quality of life for the Shipibo people and provide imperative health guidance and overall encouragement for the community. Please keep this group and the Shipibo people in your prayers this month! We can’t wait to share stories with you upon our return.
We currently have two weekday small group opportunities for high school students. All high school girls are invited to come to a small group on Wednesdays from 7:308:30PM at Starbucks (Meridian and 96th). All high school guys are invited to come to a small group on Wednesdays from 6-7PM at Buffalo Wild Wings at 2510 East 146th St., Carmel. The guys group is meeting bi-monthly for the summer. Local Mission Trip The Local Mission trip will take place August 1-3. It will feature three days of service and two nights at the Lodge. This trip will include students ranging in age from incoming sixth graders to high school graduates. We will be out in the community the first two days of the trip, serving organizations like Gleaners, Wheeler Mission and Fletcher Place, and partnering with St. Luke's Servant Day on the final day. In the evenings, we will go off site to have some fun. It's sure to be a great time to serve in our own community.
These groups are a great way to get to know each other, have a place of respite during busy weeks, and discuss your faith with peers. We hope your student will consider coming to check out a small group soon!

Nursing Mothers Room Now Available For the convenience of new mothers in our congregation, we have a nursing room, located off the East Passage, in room E126. It can be accessed directly from the East Passage or through the childcare nursery room it adjoins. The room is equipped with rocking chairs and a television live-streaming the worship service in the Sanctuary. It is open to all who need it on Sunday mornings. Please ask an usher if you need assistance locating it.
Find Your Place at The Track We’ve committed ourselves to rallying around and supporting our volunteers in new and exciting ways. One of our objectives is to create a multi-tiered system of volunteer opportunities to appeal to a variety of individuals. We’re designing our opportunities to meet not only the time and availability of our volunteers, but their spiritual gifts and talents as well. Is teaching or shepherding not your calling? Check-In System We are now utilizing a computerized check-in system (CheckPoint) in Children's Ministries. Parents should register their children in this system in The Track area (East Passage). There are computer kiosks located across from the pager desk in The Track, and staff available to assist you. Once registered, the printer will produce a name badge for each child as well as a corresponding badge for the parent to use when picking up their child(ren). Parents who are missing their name badges will only be allowed to pick up their children by obtaining permission of the children's ministry staff. Volunteers will not release a child without a badge. The CheckPoint system will provide a greater level of organization during the check-in procedure, improvement in attendance data, and an increase in the efficiency of our overall administration. But most importantly, the automated system will heighten the overall security of children's ministry and increase parental confidence that each child is as safe as possible while within the walls of St. Luke's UMC.
Commission on Children’s Ministries COCM is a group of individuals, diverse in age and talents, who support the Children’s Department by coordinating and organizing four-six major events throughout the year that serve and celebrate the children of St. Luke’s and their families. The commission meets monthly to plan and prepare for upcoming events and also fellowship with each other and members of the Children’s Ministries team. If you’re looking for a way to support Children’s Ministries outside of Sunday morning, we invite you to consider joining this commission in 2013! PRESCHOOL & PDO Preschool Classes (9AM-1PM) for three- to five-year olds are offered in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. All teachers are experienced, qualified, well-trained and strive to maintain strong relationships with the children and their families. Preschool offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum where children may grow socially, creatively, emotionally, cognitively and physically. Children must be 3 years old by 9/1/2013 to enroll for the 2013-2014 school year.
Parents’ Day Out Classes (9AM-1PM) are offered for children ages 10 months to three years. PDO was established to provide parents of young children time for themselves on a regular basis. Children participate in structured play in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. Opportunities are provided for children to learn beginning social skills while having fun. Children must be 10 months by 9/1/2013 to enroll for the 2013-2014 school year.

Grief Counseling Sometimes the pain of a significant loss needs the benefit of time before the idea of group support feels right. Wholeness and health is the goal of working through loss; we hope no one considers doing it alone.
Grief Ministry Mentors If you have experienced a loss and are not ready for group support or individual counseling, but would like a supportive friend to talk about your grief journey, Grief Ministry Mentors might be for you. Sometimes just a phone call makes all the difference. There is no commitment or time table. Attendance at Voice for Life is strongly encouraged in order to make progress and contribute to the group.
Voice for Life — begins August 27 Meets Tuesdays, 5:45-6:15PM A nationally recognized program of instruction for music theory, ear training, music history, church history, hymnology, and overall musical training. OUTREACH MINISTRIES Fletcher Place Community Center Fletcher Place is located on the southeast side of downtown Indy. Each month St. Luke’s volunteers help serve breakfast and dinner to the community. Breakfast dates are July 9, 11, 19 & 30 and August 8, 13, 16 & 27. Dinner volunteers are needed to cook, transport and serve meals July 15 & 24 and August 19 & 28. Did you know that Fletcher Place also has a thrift store that accepts donations? Anything you might take to Goodwill can also be donated to FP. All donations may be brought to the St. Luke’s main office and we will transport them downtown. The following items are needed at this time: Infant, children and teen clothing, men’s and women’s suits, undergarments for all ages, men’s clothing, bedding, towels and men’s and women’s winter coats. Outreach, Inc. Outreach, Inc. serves homeless and at-risk youth in the Indianapolis and surrounding areas. Over 400 homeless and at-risk youth have been served since January 2012. Employment, housing and transportation are the three biggest obstacles for the youth served. Outreach, Inc. is in need of donations to purchase IndyGo Bus passes for the youth to go to job interviews, work, doctor appointments, school and the grocery store. UNITED METHODIST WOMEN UMW Reading Group Join us in July for a discussion of two selections related to one of the greatest ecological disasters ever experienced in the United States—the Dust Bowl. On April 14, 1935, the biggest dust storm on record descended over five states, from the Dakotas to Amarillo, Texas. People standing a few feet apart could not see each other; if they touched, they risked being knocked over by the static electricity that the dust created in the air. The Dust Bowl was the product of reckless, market-driven farming that had so abused the land that, when dry weather came, the wind lifted up millions of acres of topsoil and whipped it around in "black blizzards," which blew as far east as New York. This ecological disaster rapidly disfigured whole communities. We'll explore this tragedy through two books—The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl by Timothy Egan and Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse. As always, readers are invited to read one or both selections as their time and interest level permits. We'll meet on Monday, July 22 from 7-8:30PM in the Parlor. Newcomers are always welcome. High School—Wake Up at the Lodge 9:30-10:30AM, Lodge Chapel. This summer, we will be working our way through some Bible passages and breaking down what they mean in today’s context. What does it look like to love God, give your life over to Him, and still have to go to school, do chores, and ask your parents for a ride? We are meant to live our lives to serve God, but we don’t always have total control over the current situation. We’ll break down how you can be a true servant of God and still be a teenager, too.
Live In Tune Youth Ministry Sunday Night Youth Group During the summer, youth ministry takes a more relaxed approach to allow families time to travel and students opportunities to attend outside activities and mission trips. We continue meeting in the mornings at 9:30AM at the Lodge, but will not be having Sunday night youth group. Our Sunday night events kick off on September 8 from 6-8PM.
