Thank You Marsha Hutchinson! After over ten years of loving pastoral care, Rev. Marsha Hutchinson is retiring from St. Luke's. Her career has centered around providing grief support, visiting hospital patients, and officiating funerals. She has also taught numerous classes, conducted special services, and preached on Sunday morning. A celebration of her ministry will be held on Sunday, Sepember 29 during the morning services.

ALL CHURCH Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide Outreach Ministries, UMW, the Spiritual Life Center and several book study groups have come together to present this Half the Sky series. Beginning Prayer Class Wednesdays, September 4,11,18 & 25, Noon-1PM in the Spiritual Life Center. This class will help you learn how to take a few minutes a day to be quiet and find rest in God. Watch a short DVD which features highly respected authors to learn how silent, reflective prayer can be a way to receiving God’s guidance. Discuss our thoughts and practice silent prayer together. You do not need to know anything about prayer to come. You will not be put on the spot. Each participant will need the book, Be Still and Know, available in Oasis. Jesus, the Teacher / Story-teller Wednesdays, September 11–October 30, 1:15-2:15PM in E105. Jesus used the technique of telling stories to help punctuate an important point he wanted to make with individuals, his disciples, or members of the crowds that gathered around him. We call these stories parables. What do these stories of long ago have to say to us today? Discuss parables that are popular and some that trouble us because the actions taken seem out of character with our thinking of faith. Bring a Bible and a friend! Key Passages from the Bible Sundays, September 15, 22 & 29, October 6 & 13, 11AM– Noon in E213. Gain familiarity with the Bible as we discuss ten different passages of Scripture – four from the Old Testament and six from the New Testament – that highlight key themes central to the Christian faith. Grow in faith as you see how our lives are a part of a larger narrative of the people of God. The Bible will be our resource book for class. Led by Terri Coe, St. Luke’s Director of Adult Ministries.
BIBLE STUDY–James: Putting Faith to Work Tuesdays, October 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29, 7-8:30PM in E213. This five-session study of James focuses on how Christians are called to live out their faith commitment. Lessons explore how faith grows out of trials endured and temptations overcome; how Christians live with integrity in their relationships; the affirmation that faith and good works are inseparable; how to act with the gentle, peaceable and caring wisdom that comes from above; and ways to deepen our capacity and strengthen our resolve to do right. Each chapter includes a purpose statement, the printed Bible passage, a core verse, a modern situation that the Bible passage can help resolve, formative guidance on the modern situation presented by the text, questions for personal reflection, and a closing prayer. CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.
September at The Track Throughout September, elementary children will be learning more about HONOR—showing others you value them by what you say and do! We'll be focusing on the stories of David throughout the month, and how God taught him to honor others, even those who seemed unimportant or unworthy of God’s honor.
September at The Mini-Track Preschool children will be focusing in on the core truth that "God Loves Us." They'll be learning important stories like the Lost Sheep and Jesus Calming the Storm—as children discover how deep and wide and strong God's love for them is, it instills the confidence and security they need to grow.
Calling All Elementary Parents On Sunday, September 8, you're invited to a short informational meeting. There will be two available times: 9:259:35AM or 10:55-11:05AM. Classrooms will open up for students at either 9:15 or 10:45, parents are encouraged to attend after settling their child into the appropriate classroom, and then stick around to get a glimpse of what "Winner's Circle" looks like for kids every week. We promise to make good use of the time, to preview what your child will be learning this fall as well as highlighting some important upcoming programs for St. Luke's families.
Just for Preschool Parents Preschool is a time of rapid change—your kids are exploring their world, discovering new things, learning to manage emotions and making wise choices. It is one of the most rewarding times of parenthood, and yet also one of the most exhausting. On September 15 during the 9:30 worship hour, we'll have a "Preschool Parenting" class in N101/102. Come learn more about what your child will be exploring this year in Sunday School, and also share with other preschool parents your best strategies for navigating the myriad changes your child is experiencing!
Third Grade Bibles One of the special milestones at St. Luke's is when 3rd graders receive their first Bible from the church. We'll celebrate this occasion in worship on September 22. If you have a third grade child or grandchild and wish for them to participate in this event, please contact Amy Myhand at myhanda@stlukesumc.com. Parents and children are asked to attend an important "Bible Introduction" class the previous Sunday evening (September 15, 5:30-7PM), led by Amy Myhand and David Williamson. Kids in Mission Kids in Mission is a group of kids making an impact in their world through hands-on service. Highlights from last year's projects include serving dinner at a downtown shelter; putting together "survival kits" for homeless Indy teens through Outreach, Inc.; preparing 20,000+ meals for Guatemala through Kids Against Hunger; designing t-shirts that were delivered to orphanage kids in Fondwa, Haiti. We have a great year planned; our kick-off meeting will be September 22, 6-7:15PM in E107/109. Kids in Mission is open to all elementary-aged kids (K-5). Making Your Marbles Count From the time your child is born, you have only 936 weeks until they turn 18. It sounds like a lot, huh? But by the time they start kindergarten, you're down to 676. By the time they're in third grade, you're down to 468. When they start middle school, there's only 312 left. By the time they start high school . . . well, you realize how quickly those weeks are slipping by! So the question is—how do we make all those weeks count? What practices and rituals do we want to repeat, week after week after week, in order to build into our children the kind of character they'll need to succeed in life? Join David Williamson and Heather Hilbert for a five-week exploration of this topic, using a resource Losing Your Marbles by Reggie Joyner. Carol Dennis has over 25 years’ experience teaching orchestra, band and choir in Indianapolis public schools, and significant experience as a flute, piccolo and viola player in both orchestral and solo settings. She enjoyed the opportunity to tour with her late husband, Dick Dennis, who served as concertmaster for Henry Mancini, Julie Andrews, Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams, Bob Hope, and other notable entertainers. Carol has recently joined the Indiana Wind Symphony, resident concert band of the Carmel Palladium. She is principal flutist in the St. Luke’s UMC Orchestra, where she is a frequent soloist.
ReachOut ReachOut is a diverse, inclusive ministry at St. Luke's. We provide social and educational events for the LGBT community. There are monthly social activities. On October 19, ReachOut will sponsor a dinner and the showing of the film "For the Bible Tells Me So." Please join us for the interesting look at what the Bible really says about homosexuality. GREEN MINISTRIES Eco-Habit of the Season All of us know more than we put into practice. Changing habits is hard. Supporting each other helps. The Green Ministry has decided to feature an Eco-Habit of the Season. If we all practice it for three months, we can change our behaviors and make a difference. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – Paper Recycling. In September, the Green Ministry hopes you will bring mail, office paper, catalogs, newspapers and magazines to be recycled in the green and yellow Abitibi bins at the east driveway. Even if you can recycle them at home, please make the extra effort to bring them with you to church. If we reach four tons a month, it means money for the Green Ministry and helps to defray the cost of other “pay for service” recycling efforts.

Welcome Back, Marion! Pastor Marion is on the final leg of her Coast to Coast journey of renewal. A journey made bittersweet in the passing of her sister, Joyce. Through rest, reading, reflection and worship with other multicultural congregations, she re-engaged with the four priorities that are the center of her life—God, Family, Church and Community. While our pastor has been on sabbatical, our congregation has had a series of multicultural workshops. Additionally, a workshop, Gifts and Passions targeting Your St Luke’s Role. Pastor Marion’s pulpit has been filled with a rainbow of preachers and their congregations. Later’s congregation is looking forward to the return of Pastor Marion, knowing that she will renewed and full of new ideas. She will return to the congregation the first Sunday of September and to her pulpit the second Sunday. A celebration of her return from sabbatical will be at a future date.

MUSIC MINISTRIES St. Luke's Chancel Choir Launches 60th Season Our 160-voice Chancel Choir has resumed rehearsals and will rejoin Sanctuary worship services starting September 8. Additional singers, particularly tenors and basses, are needed for the exciting season ahead. In addition to Thursday night rehearsals and Sunday morning ministry, the choir presents inspiring concerts, travels both regionally and internationally, and supports a wide range of caring ministries through its musical efforts. A Benefit Concert for the Hungry with International Opera Singer Angela Brown The Music Ministries & Outreach Ministries, along with The Interfaith Hunger Initiative (IHI), are hosting a communitywide event to help end hunger in Indianapolis and feed children in Africa, featuring a powerhouse international singer who has Indianapolis roots. On Saturday, November 2 at 7:30PM, soprano Angela Brown will present an evening of brilliance, featuring the best from her classical repertoire to spirituals and Broadway favorites. Tickets are $20/ adults, $12/students and are available starting in September at www.stlukesumc. com/music or by calling the church office at 317-846-3404. Patron tickets at $60/ person are also available and will include priority seating and admission to a patron only reception following the concert. Ticket proceeds will benefit the important work being done by the Interfaith Hunger Initiative, a partnership of more than a dozen different faith communities in Indianapolis. For more than six years, IHI has made a significant difference in making more food available to children and families in in need in Indianapolis, and to over 3000 children via nutritious school lunches in Kenya.
OUTREACH September Outreach of the Month: SAWs SAWs (Servant’s At Work): Building community, Transforming Lives and Accessing the World. SAWs built their first ramp in 2003 and seeks to help build wheelchair ramps for people who have been “trapped” at home due to mobility issues. Volunteering on Saturdays for this ministry combines fellowship and working together with your family members (grandparents, parents and kids over 12). St. Luke’s will have a “SAWs DAY” on September 28 from 8AM-1PM. English Classes Habitat for Humanity The St. Luke’s Habitat project is underway! On Servant Day, Saturday, August 3, the interior and exterior walls for the Davis family home were constructed and were delivered to the home site. Help us complete the home by signing up online. Outreach, Inc. Reliable and efficient transportation is a major barrier for the youth of Outreach, Inc. It is not uncommon for youth to spend three or more hours a day on foot in order to attend school, make provider appointments, or get to and from work. Many walk 45 minutes or more to get to the Outreach Drop-In Center. Providing bus passes for youth is one way to help keep medical, mental health, housing and other appointments. Also, youth engaged in full-time work or school consistently voice the need for a driver’s license. Kentucky Methodist Children's Home, Versailles, KY September 11-14 LEADER: Carter Jerman, cjerman@fisco.biz COST: Transportation and dinners The Kentucky Methodist Children's Home is a Christian service agency serving youth in Kentucky with histories of abuse, neglect, abandonment or family distress. They provide professional counseling to young people to help them heal and create a brighter future for themselves. Our volunteers will help make home a "brighter" place to live by assisting in painting, power washing, and landscaping. The team will reside in one of the dorms on the property. Sierra Leone Health Partner Mission Trips January and February 2014 (Costs and dates listed below) In January and February, St. Luke’s Sierra Leone Health Partners returns to serve in this West African nation. It is the eighth time teams have gone to work since 2007. In 2014 two teams will go for 15 days (departures January 16 and 30), and two teams will spend 9 days (departures January 23 and February 6.) The primary emphasis will be aiding the staff of Kissy UMC General Hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone, open a new 48-bed Mother and Child Building, train staff for the new facility and expanded service, provide requested educational and administrative training for staff and expand the hospital’s water system.

SOCIAL JUSTICE MOVIE NIGHT: “Born into Brothels” The Inclusion and Social Justice Committee invites you join us on Friday, September 20 at 6:30PM in Fellowship Hall for another Movie Night. We will be viewing “Born into Brothels,” a documentary about the inspiring non-profit foundation Kids with Cameras, which teaches photography skills to children in marginalized communities. In 1998, New York-based photographer Zana Briski started photographing prostitutes in the red-light district of Calcutta. She eventually developed a relationship with their children, who were fascinated by her equipment and began learning to take their own photos. Proceeds from the sale of the children’s photographs go to fund their future education. You’ll want to learn how this experience has evolved into an opportunity for a better future for these children. Mark Your Calendar – Underground Railroad Trip Located in Cincinnati, OH, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center brings to life the struggles and risks of individuals escaping slavery in our country’s history, as well as raising awareness and understanding of threats against freedom from human trafficking around the world today. Meeting God Again for the First Time Mondays, September 30-October 21, 7-8:30PM in E107/109. In this postmodern world, many of us hope for a way to know God that goes beyond mere belief in God. The religious images we grew up with no longer seem to serve us. We hunger for something more real, more life-giving. But we're not sure how to find it. Some of us may even wonder if it's there. In this class, we'll explore a variety of approaches to the Mystery we call God. You may find that God is always ready to reveal Godself. You just have to know how to look and how to listen and, sometimes, how to surrender. Taught by Terry Daniel, a local psychotherapist who recently earned a Master of Divinity degree from Chicago Theological Seminary. He serves on the Inner Soul Committee of the Spiritual Life Center.

St. Luke’s at the Movies – “Wasteland” What happens in the world's largest trash city will transform you. Filmed over nearly three years, “Wasteland” follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of catadores—self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. His collaboration with these inspiring individuals reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. A Father's Grace is a circle of dads dealing with issues of divorce. Participating men will discover tools and practices to cope with the myriad of emotional, spiritual and physical changes that occur through divorce. Our hope is to end the cycle of isolation for men and assist them in redefining themselves and the dads they hope to be. A Father's Grace is a six-week process, there are two opportunities this fall: One group will be meeting on Tuesday mornings, 7:308:45AM at Centerpoint Counseling (2nd Presbyterian Church, 7700 N. Meridian St.), starting September 17; a second group will meet at St. Luke's in the Spiritual Life Center on Thursday evenings, 4:45-6PM, starting September 19. Nursing Mothers Room Now Available For the convenience of new mothers in our congregation, we have a nursing room, located off the East Passage, in room E126. It can be accessed directly from the East Passage or through the childcare nursery room it adjoins. The room is equipped with rocking chairs and a television live-streaming the worship service in the Sanctuary. It is open to all who need it on Sunday mornings. Please ask an usher if you need assistance locating it.
Find Your Place at The Track We’ve committed ourselves to rallying around and supporting our volunteers in new and exciting ways. One of our objectives is to create a multi-tiered system of volunteer opportunities to appeal to a variety of individuals. Check-In System We are now utilizing a computerized check-in system (CheckPoint) in Children's Ministries. Parents should register their children in this system in The Track area (East Passage). There are computer kiosks located across from the pager desk in The Track, and staff available to assist you. Once registered, the printer will produce a name badge for each child as well as a corresponding badge for the parent to use when picking up their child(ren). Parents who are missing their name badges will only be allowed to pick up their children by obtaining permission of the children's ministry staff. Volunteers will not release a child without a badge. The CheckPoint system will provide a greater level of organization during the check-in procedure, improvement in attendance data, and an increase in the efficiency of our overall administration. But most importantly, the automated system will heighten the overall security of children's ministry and increase parental confidence that each child is as safe as possible while within the walls of St. Luke's UMC.
Commission on Children’s Ministries COCM is a group of individuals, diverse in age and talents, who support the Children’s Department by coordinating and organizing four-six major events throughout the year that serve and celebrate the children of St. Luke’s and their families. The commission meets monthly to plan and prepare for upcoming events and also fellowship with each other and members of the Children’s Ministries team. PRESCHOOL & PDO Preschool Classes (9AM-1PM) for three- to five-year olds are offered in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. All teachers are experienced, qualified, well-trained and strive to maintain strong relationships with the children and their families. Preschool offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum where children may grow socially, creatively, emotionally, cognitively and physically. Children must be 3 years old by 9/1/2013 to enroll for the 2013-2014 school year.
Parents’ Day Out Classes (9AM-1PM) are offered for children ages 10 months to three years. PDO was established to provide parents of young children time for themselves on a regular basis. Children participate in structured play in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. Opportunities are provided for children to learn beginning social skills while having fun. Children must be 10 months by 9/1/2013 to enroll for the 2013-2014 school year.

In September, the UMW Reading Group will continue to explore the issues of sex trafficking explored at the September Half the Sky event. We'll meet on Monday, September 23 from 7-8:30PM in the Parlor to discuss A Walk Across the Sun by Corban Addison, an international thriller about the shadowy world of child trafficking. The novel is the result of a personal odyssey that took the author to India and Europe and into the corridors of power in Washington, D.C. He immersed himself in the world of modern-day slavery, he spent time with experts and activists in the field and went undercover into the brothels of Mumbai to meet trafficking victims firsthand. The cookbook, published in 2010, contains over 500 recipes graciously donated by St. Luke members and their families and friends. Cost: $15, proceeds benefit various UMW missions.

Sunday Morning Offerings - Grades 6-8

High School Youth Group 9:30-10:30AM at the Lodge. High school youth group meets on Sunday mornings in the Lodge for student-led worship, a brief message, small group breakouts, experiential learning, and hanging out with games. Whether you’re already plugged in or new to high school youth activities, this is the place to plug in! Sunday mornings are low on pressure and high on connecting. All high school youth and their friends welcome.
Sunday Night Jr. High Youth Group 6-7:30PM at the Lodge and the Gym. Some students will choose gym activities, while other students will choose to go to a small room with board games and connection time. Following this time we will bring students together for an ice breaker, and then move to the Lodge for Faith Questions. Sunday nights will work like “overtime” from Sunday morning. Questions about faith, about the Bible, life, and lessons that we are learning in the morning will be addressed in the evening. Invite friends, and look out for some fun activities!
High School Small Groups We encourage all high school students to get plugged in with a weekly small group. This is a great way for students to get to know each other, have a place of respite during busy weeks, and grow deeper in their faith alongside peers. We currently have two weekday small group opportunities for high school students, and more will be starting up this fall on Sunday nights and throughout the week. Please contact Stephanie Eft to get plugged in or find out more. We also need adult mentors who would be willing to meet with these groups. All high school girls are invited to come to a small group on Wednesdays from 7:30 to 8:30PM at the Starbucks on Meridian and 96th St. All high school guys are invited to come to a small group on Wednesdays from 6-7PM at Buffalo Wild Wings at 2510 East 146th St., Carmel. We hope your student will consider coming to check out a small group soon.
