MONTHLY

COMMUNION MAY OUTREACH OF THE MONTH

Rosebud, SD Native American Family Work Project For the past seven years, St. Luke’s has had a presence on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Family work teams have worked with the Lakota people through a variety of experiences. Some have worked on rehabbing homes and constructing living quarters for mission teams. Others have stocked shelves in the food pantry and distributed food items. The Thrift Shop Boutique has been the venue for team members to sort and hang donated clothing, and several women on the team have cooked and served a free lunch for the poor and homeless. The children on the team have assisted the adults each afternoon in running a Kid’s Club for the Lakota children. Held at the Rosebud Boys and Girls Club, lunch is served first and then crafts, games, recreation and tutoring have followed. St. Luke’s will return to Rosebud this summer, June 23-29. Cost for the trip is $350 (+transportation). If you are interested in learning more about this mission outreach, contact Kathie Clemenz, team leader at 317-845-5655 or kkclemenz@sbcglobal.net or register online. Join us for a team orientation meeting on Saturday, May 18 at 10AM in N101/102. Please also join us on May 26 at 4:30PM in E105 when Rev. Dr. Susan Jennys will be with us. An anthropologist as well as a United Methodist lay pastor, Susan will show the film “Reel Injun,” which shows how Hollywood has depicted Native Americans over the years, thus contributing to stereotypes. She will lead a Q&A afterward. Indian Fry Bread will be served, so you won’t want to miss this activity!

Pancakes for Peru! On Sunday, May 19 our youth will be serving pancakes along with other breakfast items in the Great Hall in an effort to help our 32 students who are going to Peru on a work trip this summer, July 19-31. They will be working as a team to serve you a warm breakfast with a smile! Freewill offerings will be gladly accepted to help cover their trip costs, as well as your prayers and support.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.

May at The Track May’s virtue is PATIENCE—waiting until later for what you want now. Waiting isn’t always easy. When having patience seems too difficult, God will give us strength to wait. At its core, patience is fueled by faith. We trust that what we’re waiting for is best for us. The monthly memory verse is: “Wait for the Lord. Be strong and don’t lose hope. Wait for the Lord.” (PSALM 27:14) Sometimes it feels too hard to be strong while we wait, but our trust in God gives us the strength to wait well.

May at the Mini-Track The theme for May at the Mini-Track is “Helping Hands.” Preschoolers spend a lot of time surrounded by people who help them—their parents, their older siblings, their teachers. They are just learning that they can help too. This month, we are sharing four stories from the Bible where someone used their hands to help others. The memory verse is, “Be kind and loving to each other.” (EPHESIANS 4:32)

Volunteer Banquet Sunday, May 19, 5:30-7PM. All volunteers who have helped Children’s Ministry thrive in the 2012-2013 school year will be honored at our annual volunteer banquet. This year’s theme is Full Throttle. The evening will include dinner and special entertainment. Childcare will be provided for all ages, and kids will also be served dinner and enjoy a special entertainment program just for them. All volunteers should have received an Evite invitation. If you did not receive an invitation, please contact thetrack@stlukesumc.com.

Summer Splash 2013—KINGDOM ROCK July 22-26, 9AM-Noon. This July, Summer Splash will transform St. Luke's into a mighty majestic castle where kids will learn to stand strong for God! At Summer Splash 2013, we'll learn that God’s victorious power isn’t a fairy tale— and it will change kids' lives forever. Each day at Summer Splash, kids move through activity stations with their Kingdom Crews (small groups). Every station is intentionally designed to reinforce the daily Bible Point in a hands-on, interactive way that keeps kids engaged. Three year olds through those now completing 3rd grade may register as a student. Upper elementary students who are now completing 4th and 5th grades may register to participate in Rock Solid Day Camp—a newly designed option just for older students. Jr. High and Sr. High youth may volunteer as youth assistants. And any adult may volunteer in a number of different ways. Love watching kids discover God's love for them? Love using props and curriculum to impart God's love in new ways to larger groups? Want to work behind the scenes to create an unforgettable environment? No matter your area of expertise, there is a place for you at Summer Splash! REGISTRATION IS OPEN APRIL 14-JULY 8 both online and in person Sunday mornings. Questions? Contact the Summer Splash directors at summersplash@stlukesumc.com or 317-846-3404 x328.

Summer Volunteers Needed The Track keeps on running right through the summer months for both preschool and elementary children, but we like to give our school-year volunteers a break. We’re looking for enthusiastic, energetic adults or older youth to help the summer run smoothly. Volunteering in the summer is an easy way to “test drive” serving in Children’s Ministries. Please consider a short-term commitment that could be tailored to your availability. There are classroom and hospitality opportunities available at both the 9:30 and 11AM services. To learn more, please contact thetrack@stlukesumc.com.

Would you like to be in Florida in February for a low cost and a bit of work? Consider joining The Garden folks on Sunday, February 9 thru Friday, February 14 next year. We will be staying at the Christian Retreat Center in Ft Myers Beach, Florida. This trip has always been known as a Habitat trip, but now calling it a Mission trip. Let's practice the art of extreme self-care. MAY 19: Closed Eyes, Open Hearts. Trusting what our eyes see is one way to stay on the path of life. However, what happens when we trust what our heart sees? Where might we go by trusting our hearts? MAY 26: What Would You Do? What if we had to make a snap decision in a difficult situation? What would our gut instinct tell us to do?

GREEN MINISTRIES Help Buy New Dishwasher for

Eco-Habit of the Month Begins in May

FELLOWSHIP HALL KITCHEN

All of us know more than we put into practice. Changing habits is hard. Supporting each other helps. So the Green Ministry has decided to feature an Eco-Habit of the Month. If we all practice it for a month, we can change our behaviors and make a difference.

Energize Indiana has changed the rules and will now offer free energy audits to anyone whose home was built prior to January 1, 2010. A skilled representative will come to your home, do a careful inventory and leave a report and a box full of energy-saving products. There is no charge and you are not pressured to buy anything. The win/win is that St. Luke’s earns $25 for each audit to use in green projects around our facility. We have already earned almost $5000 and are talking with the Trustees about a new dishwasher. You can go on www.stlukesumc.com Green Ministry home page and follow the link to request an audit appointment, or pick up a form in the church office or at the Recycling Center in the Central Passage. Place the competed form in Betty Brandt’s mailbox and you will then receive a call from Energize Indiana to schedule an appointment.

The Eco-Habit for May is E-Waste Recycling. Since January 1, 2011, it has been illegal in Indiana to burn in an incinerator or put into a landfill anything with a cord (Indiana Code 13-20.5). St. Luke’s partners with RecycleForce and Wings Over West Africa to safely reuse or recycle all e-waste. When you are cleaning out your garage or your basement this spring, or upgrading your equipment at home or office, bring your e-waste to St. Luke’s Central Passage. Get your children involved. Tell your family and friends about this law too. You can make a difference!

HEALTH MINISTRIES Showing “Forks Over Knives” Documentary This 2011 documentary examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that affect us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods. Features powerful research done by T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D from Cornell University and Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., MD. Thursday, May 30, 6:30-8:30PM in the Parlor. Sponsored by the Health Ministry, Healing Partners and the Green Ministry. No fee or registration.

Home rehab, educational support and social services work August 18-August 23 LEADER: Terry Collins COST: $100 (+transportation) Informational Meeting on Sunday, May 19, 10:30AM in E213. Lotts Creek Community School is the last of nearly 100 “settlement schools” built in the Appalachian Mountains in the early part of the 20th century. These schools were created to provide much-needed education where it was unavailable. Not only did the settlement schools provide education, but also many social services for the region. Today, Lotts Creek is the only school still operating in this manner. The services available include housing repairs, clothing, a food bank, and a medical assistance and wellness program at no cost to eligible members of the community. Our volunteers will assist in the many services the community offers. This trip is a good fit for a variety of passions. The team will reside in historic dormitories that once housed students. SOWERS The Sowers of St Luke's volunteer their time and talent to tend the Sowers Garden outside between the Parlor and the Great Hall. They are both novice and experienced gardeners. Anyone with an interest is welcome to join up! For more information contact Gail Corn at 843-1244.

Love Apple Project

On Sunday morning May 12, the Sowers will be having their annual plant sale in the West passage between services. Come check out some great plants harvested from many of our personal gardens. The plants are mostly perennials. The proceeds help us to maintain the Sowers garden, Entrance 16 and the urns at the main entrance.

This is a "grow and give" idea that the Sowers are promoting. On Sunday morning May 19, you get a tomato plant to "grow" in your soil to water and nourish during the growing season. At harvest time, you "give" the produce to the Sowers to be donated to local food banks (exact procedure and times to be determined). For more information on this project, contact Brandt Carter at 253-3222.

SPIRITUALITY AND THE ARTS

BODY / MIND / SPIRIT

Dick Lautzenheiser’s “Faces of Haiti”

Movement, Play and Spirituality

When Dick Lautzenheiser travels to Haiti, he not only brings his medical skills, he also bring his artistic talent. The “Identity” Gallery is showing his “Faces of Haiti” exhibit for the month of May.

Movement: a spiritual practice, a path to clarity, a way to relax, a connection to others, a creativity enhancer, a window to the inner soul, a playful interlude. All that is required from you is the willingness to move and listen to the wisdom of your body, your heart and the others moving around and with you. This experiential class will explore movement, play and spirituality from a variety of traditions including Gabrielle Roth’s 5 Rhythms. Come ready to move and play with leader Amy Barnes, Life Coach and Therapist. Adults 18 to 108 are welcome. Every 2nd Sunday, May 12 and June 9, 4-5:15PM in N103/104. Registration suggested, donations appreciated. Amy has been chosen to present this program at the Midwest International Coaching Federation Conference in Minneapolis, June 2013.

Nursing Mothers Room Now Available

The Track Registration

For the convenience of new mothers in our congregation, we have a nursing room, located off the East Passage, in room E126. It can be accessed directly from the East Passage or through the childcare nursery room it adjoins. The room is equipped with rocking chairs and a television live-streaming the worship service in the Sanctuary. It is open to all who need it on Sunday mornings. Please ask an usher if you need assistance locating it.

Have you registered your children for Sunday morning small groups? You can register them online at www.stlukesumc.com/children/sundaymorning. Questions? email us at thetrack@stlukesumc.com.

Find Your Place at The Track 2013 is the Year of the Volunteer in Children’s Ministries! We’ve committed ourselves to rallying around and supporting our volunteers in new and exciting ways. One of our objectives is to create a multi-tiered system of volunteer opportunities to appeal to a variety of individuals. We’re designing our opportunities to meet not only the time and availability of our volunteers, but their spiritual gifts and talents as well. Is teaching or shepherding not your calling? Think beyond Sunday morning! If you’re interested in joining our team to support our growth we will find a project that is right for you! Contact thetrack@stlukesumc.com

Commission on Children’s Ministries COCM is a group of individuals, diverse in age and talents, who support the Children’s Department by coordinating and organizing four-six major events throughout the year that serve and celebrate the children of St. Luke’s and their families. The commission meets monthly to plan and prepare for upcoming events and also fellowship with each other and members of the Children’s Ministries team. If you’re looking for a way to support Children’s Ministries outside of Sunday morning, we invite you to consider joining this commission in 2013! For more information, please contact Amy Myhand at myhanda@stlukesumc.com

Check-In System We are now utilizing a computerized check-in system (CheckPoint) in Children's Ministries. Parents should register their children in this system in The Track area (East Passage). There are computer kiosks located across from the pager desk in The Track, and staff available to assist you. Once registered, the printer will produce a name badge for each child as well as a corresponding badge for the parent to use when picking up their child(ren). Parents who are missing their name badges will only be allowed to pick up their children by obtaining permission of the children's ministry staff. Volunteers will not release a child without a badge. The CheckPoint system will provide a greater level of organization during the check-in procedure, improvement in attendance data, and an increase in the efficiency of our overall administration. But most importantly, the automated system will heighten the overall security of children's ministry and increase parental confidence that each child is as safe as possible while within the walls of St. Luke's UMC.

The Track: Facebook & Twitter You can now "like" The Track on Facebook at St. Luke's UMC—The Track to get up-to-date information about everything happening in Children's Ministries. You can also follow The Track on Twitter@StLukesTrack, or text to 40404 and type “follow @stlukestrack” to receive tweets as text messages.

Stephen Ministry

Grief Counseling

During this time of the year, life in general is peppier, flowers are perkier and days are sunnier. If nothing in your life can relate to the previous sentence, let Stephen Ministry offer you a healthy remedy! Use your mustard seed faith today and contact Mary Katherine Schnitz at schnitzm@stlukesumc.com or 846-3404x365 to start your healing process!

Sometimes the pain of a significant loss needs the benefit of time before the idea of group support feels right. If you, or someone you know in your family, workplace or neighborhood would benefit from a one-on-one session of grief counseling, contact Rev. Marsha Hutchinson at hutchinsonm@stlukesumc.com. Wholeness and health is the goal of working through loss; we hope no one considers doing it alone.

Also, if you are someone who has gifts of compassion and empathy for those going through loss, consider becoming a Grief Ministry Mentor. For more information, call Rev.
