CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.

August at The Track

August at the Mini-Track

Our virtue for August is OBEDIENCE. Obedience is trusting those who lead you by doing what you’re asked to do. God asks us to trust by giving us specific things to do to accomplish God’s work around us. God may even ask us to do something that seems too hard or too uncomfortable. But we can choose to trust that God will work out the details and take care of our needs. Then it’s easier for us to choose to obey and act on what we know, because we trust our ultimate Leader.

Choices. We make them every day. Preschoolers are making some important decisions in their world. Should I obey Mom? Should I share with Suzy? Even they can look to God for help with answers. We want to teach them to look to God now with the easier stuff (although it’s not easy for them) so they will look to God for the harder stuff later in life.

The monthly memory verse is: “Obey your leaders. Put yourselves under their authority. They keep watch over you. They know they are accountable to God for everything they do. Obey them so that their work will be a joy. If you make their work a heavy load, it won’t do you any good.” (HEBREWS 13:17, NIrV) Often, it’s hardest to obey when God asks us to trust another person that God has chosen to lead us. But, as long as their instructions line up with God’s commands, do what they ask of us.

Preschoolers will see how God knew what was best for our Bible friends so many years ago as they investigate the stories of Adam and Eve, Jonah, Naamen, and Joshua and Caleb. While visiting these stories, we will discuss the hard choices they had to make and that the best results always came when they chose what God wanted them to do. Because (say it with me) God knows what’s best for me.

Volunteers Needed

Coming Soon!

We are in need of classroom, fellowship and hospitality volunteers for all ages for the upcoming school year. Volunteering in Children’s Ministry will offer you an opportunity to not only connect with children, but also help them connect with each other and build community. If you are interested in investing in the children of St. Luke’s, please contact thetrack@stlukesumc.com

Losing Your Marbles/Playing for Keeps is a book study for anybody who will do anything with a kid or teenager this week. No, really. Anybody. Losing Your Marbles, well that’s a story about a kid named Simon who just might remind you of a kid in your life. Playing for Keeps explores six things every kid needs over time, and provides 18 practical ideas for anybody who want to make what really matters matter more. For more information about dates and times, contact Heather Hilbert at hilberth@stlukesumc.com.

Attention New Kindergarten Parents As your child makes those first steps into kindergarten and beyond, we hope you’ll join with other St. Luke’s parents on August 18, time/place TBA for a time of honest reflection upon the values that were present in our own home environments as we were growing up, and how those values inform us as parents/adults today. Together we’ll explore how we can proactively work to cultivate the right “mix” of values in our home environments, rather than letting the demands of ever-increasing activities to dictate the pace of our homes. Look for more information coming soon. Contact thetrack@stlukesumc.com with questions.

CHILDREN’S MUSIC Step Right Up! Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages, step right up and prepare to help the children of St. Luke’s produce the biggest, largest most gigantic (yes, BIGGER than a circus elephant) under the big top children’s musical ever! A group of individuals is needed to help with costumes, set design, set building, lighting and general creativeness. Are YOU that person!? This circus-themed musical will involve ALL children of the St. Luke’s Children’s Ministries (not just the choir kids), Grades K–5, and some preschool children. If you are interested in lending a hand (or can juggle, walk on stilts or tame lions) please contact the current Children’s Music “ringmaster” Debra Nethercott, (Director of Children’s Music) at 846-3404 x329 or nethercottd@ stlukesumc.com. Though this production will not happen until Spring 2014, plans need to be made now. Adults should contact Miss Deb soon.

GREEN MINISTRIES Eco-Habit of the Season All of us know more than we put into practice. Changing habits is hard. Supporting each other helps. So the Green Ministry has decided to feature an Eco-Habit of the Season. If we all practice it for three months, we can change our behaviors and make a difference.

Locally Grown Pitch-In

Eating Local is a popular summer adventure. Farmers’ Markets are available all over town (www.farmersmarketonline.com/ fm/Indiana.htm). Meet the people who grow your food, buy something new and different, try some homemade pasta, taste honey made by Hoosier bees. Encourage your new habit by visiting a Farmer’s Market at least five times. Have a vendor sign your entry card (pick up card at Recycling Center in Central Passage) and return the card to the container at the Communication Center in the church office. You are then eligible to win a special prize at the Locally Grown Pitch-in on August 10. (Don’t have to be present to win, but we’d love to have you come!)

Make something which includes at least one locally grown ingredient and come to our Third Annual Pitch-In to celebrate the goodness of God’s creation. Bring 20 copies of your recipe to give to interested cooks. In addition, the Green Ministry will post online electronic copies of popular recipes. Have fun eating interesting food, enjoying conversation and listening to the music of Sarah Grain. Sarah Graub married Frances and Louie Cain’s (former St. Luke’s Associate Pastor) grandson and they became the Grains. They live communally and sustainably, and Sarah composes her own music. Saturday, August 10, 6-8PM in Fellowship Hall. Registration suggested, no fee.

Computer Collection Drive and E-Waste Recycling Event

Recycle Your Egg Cartons

As part of Servant Day, St. Luke's will host a community computer collection drive and electronic waste recycling event on Saturday, August 3, 9AM-1PM in the front parking lot. Donate your no-longer used computer equipment to Wings for West Africa, a local non-profit that refurbishes and ships computers to schools in West Africa. Hard drives are professionally wiped and tax receipts provided. We are also accepting anything with a cord to be safely recycled by RecycleForce Inc. For a complete list of what can be recycled at this event go to www.stlukesumc.com. Tell your friends and neighbors! Fee is collected for TVs. Cans, bottles, cardboard and Styrofoam (not peanuts) also accepted.

You can now recycle egg cartons in a big black tub on the Recycling rack in the Central Passage. They will be used by local poultry owners.

Imagine a place where God is seen and heard through expressions of movement, media, and music—come worship at Later@St. Luke’s on Sunday evenings at 6PM in Robertson Chapel. Hear contemporary Christian, gospel and jazz music featuring the Later Band and Vocals, along with a challenging and thought-provoking message. Holy Communion is served every Sunday, along with light refreshments before and after the worship service.

NATIONAL WORK TRIPS

Midwest Mission Distribution Center, Chatham, IL: Disaster relief work September 29-October 4 LEADER: Marge Butler, 257-6130, Bobbutler2@comcast.net COST: $200 (+transportation)

Outreach, Inc. Reliable and efficient transportation is a major barrier for the youth of Outreach, Inc. It is not uncommon for youth to spend three or more hours a day on foot in order to attend school, make provider appointments, or get to and from work. Many walk 45 minutes or more to get to the Outreach Drop-In Center. Providing bus passes for youth is one way to help keep medical, mental health, housing and other appointments. Also, youth engaged in full-time work or school consistently voice the need for a driver’s license. For more information on Outreach, Inc. volunteering, contact Jackie Reed at 332-6550 or jsrmolar@sbcglobal.net. A few ways to help youth with transportation needs: • Purchase IndyGo one-day ($4) bus passes. Please mail passes (or checks with "bus pass" in the memo line) to P.O. Box 11416, Indianapolis, IN 46201, or deliver to Outreach: 2822 E. New York St., Indpls., 46201. • Volunteer to help youth earn driving time. Volunteers would be required to use their own car. • Volunteer to help during Admin Drop on Wednesdays, 10:45AM-2PM. Volunteers help youth complete necessary paperwork and drive them to appointments at the Social Security Office, Dept. of Health, BMV, etc.

Midwest Mission Distribution Center is a mission related to the North Central Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church. Their mission is to compassionately help God’s people in need locally, nationally and around the world, and to offer a center to fulfill the call for service to our neighbors in Christ’s name. This work team will assist MDC in their mission by working to pack disaster relief items and organize the donations received to MMDC. Chatham, IL is 3 1/2 hours west near Springfield. The team will stay in dorm-like housing furnished by MMDC. For more information, please go to www.midwestmissiondc.org. To sign up for this work trip, please go to www.stlukesumc. com/outreach/national/ where you can make trip payment and fill out the application. Direct questions to Marge Butler, contact information above.

Disaster Relief Trip Mark your calendars for October 7-13 and 14-20. We are planning two Disaster Relief Trips to Oklahoma and West Virginia. She eventually developed a relationship with their children, who were fascinated by her equipment and began learning to take their own photos. CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES

The Track Registration

For Children’s Music information, please see the listing under Music Ministries on page 19.

Have you registered your children for Sunday morning small groups? You can register them online at www.stlukesumc. com/children/sundaymorning. Questions? email us at thetrack@stlukesumc.com.

Nursing Mothers Room Now Available For the convenience of new mothers in our congregation, we have a nursing room, located off the East Passage, in room E126. It can be accessed directly from the East Passage or through the childcare nursery room it adjoins. The room is equipped with rocking chairs and a television live-streaming the worship service in the Sanctuary. It is open to all who need it on Sunday mornings. Please ask an usher if you need assistance locating it.

Find Your Place at The Track We’ve committed ourselves to rallying around and supporting our volunteers in new and exciting ways. One of our objectives is to create a multi-tiered system of volunteer opportunities to appeal to a variety of individuals. We’re designing our opportunities to meet not only the time and availability of our volunteers, but their spiritual gifts and talents as well. Is teaching or shepherding not your calling? Think beyond Sunday morning! If you’re interested in joining our team to support our growth we will find a project that is right for you! Contact thetrack@stlukesumc.com

Check-In System We are now utilizing a computerized check-in system (CheckPoint) in Children's Ministries. Parents should register their children in this system in The Track area (East Passage). There are computer kiosks located across from the pager desk in The Track, and staff available to assist you. Once registered, the printer will produce a name badge for each child as well as a corresponding badge for the parent to use when picking up their child(ren). Parents who are missing their name badges will only be allowed to pick up their children by obtaining permission of the children's ministry staff. Volunteers will not release a child without a badge. The CheckPoint system will provide a greater level of organization during the check-in procedure, improvement in attendance data, and an increase in the efficiency of our overall administration. But most importantly, the automated system will heighten the overall security of children's ministry and increase parental confidence that each child is as safe as possible while within the walls of St. Luke's UMC.

Commission on Children’s Ministries COCM is a group of individuals, diverse in age and talents, who support the Children’s Department by coordinating and organizing four-six major events throughout the year that serve and celebrate the children of St. Luke’s and their families. The commission meets monthly to plan and prepare for upcoming events and also fellowship with each other and members of the Children’s Ministries team. If you’re looking for a way to support Children’s Ministries outside of Sunday morning, we invite you to consider joining this commission in 2013! For more information, please contact Amy Myhand at myhanda@stlukesumc.com

SAWs The SAWs (Servants at Work) team has been hard at work since spring building wheelchair ramps for folks who have been “trapped” at home due to mobility issues. Volunteering on Saturdays for this ministry combines fellowship and working together with your family members (grandparents, parents and kids over 12). You will experience immediate results that yield benefits both ways. The construction teams feel more blessed than the recipients. There are several aspects of this Outreach that you can volunteer for:

To volunteer or donate funds for materials, go to: www.Saws -Ramps.org. UNITED METHODIST MEN

YOUNG ADULT MINISTRIES

Monthly Breakfast

There are many ways to get involved with our young adult group - spiritually, socially and service-oriented. Our fellowship nights are designed to get you out of your house and engaged with other young adults. We take in concerts, dinners, movies, bowling, putt-putt, local onetime gigs and much more. Get connected with others through small group experiences and social activities, as well as use your gifts and talents to make a difference in the lives of others.

All men are invited to the United Methodist Men's breakfast. Most months we meet the first Saturday of the month, but in August we meet with the church-wide Servant Day. We hope you will join the United Methodist Men at 8AM in the Great Hall for a hearty breakfast before we head over to Nora Elementary and serve the children and teachers of that community. School starts two days later, so we will work to make the school shine. There is a great need for both inside and outside work doing things like spreading mulch, helping teachers organize, trimming bushes, and sorting supplies. There are jobs for men, women, and children, so bring a friend, your kids, or anyone else! Look for sign up at church, or just let us know right now you can make it with an email to umm@stlukesumc.com.

Theology Unplugged Monthly Fellowship Meet new friends and catch up with old ones during our monthly fellowship on Wednesday, August 21 at 8:30PM. Please contact David Gard at davidgard104@aol.com or 501-8828, if you can make it. Or just show up five minutes late. It's cool. The french onion soup is highly recommended, but not required.

Sunday Morning Offerings - Grades 6-8 9:30 -10:30AM, The Lodge Teens can check out a fun, welcoming atmosphere on Sunday mornings at the Lodge. Come early for game systems, ping pong, foosball, air hockey & pool. After some social gathering time, we head to the chapel for a game, live worship, devotional and small groups. See you on Sundays!

High School—Wake Up at the Lodge 9:30-10:30AM, Lodge Chapel. This summer, we will be working our way through some Bible passages and breaking down what they mean in today’s context. What does it look like to love God, give your life over to Him, and still have to go to school, do chores, and ask your parents for a ride? We are meant to live our lives to serve God, but we don’t always have total control over the current situation. We’ll break down how you can be a true servant of God and still be a teenager, too.

Live In Tune Youth Ministry Sunday Night Youth Group During the summer, youth ministry takes a more relaxed approach to allow families time to travel and students opportunities to attend outside activities and mission trips. We continue meeting in the mornings at 9:30AM at the Lodge, but will not be having Sunday night youth group. Our Sunday night events kick off on September 8 from 6-8PM.

LOOKING AHEAD: SEPTEMBER 8: Fall Kick-Off Party, 6-8PM SEPTEMBER 27-29: Jr. High and High School Fall Retreats NOVEMBER 8-9: 30 Hour Famine
