Together In Ministry Everyday: Tradition! Opportunities will continue through CONFIRMATION Sunday, May 17. Watch for information in the May Communion Monthly.
The ways we relate to God and to each other—our traditions—are at the root of what we do in church and in the world. Our United Methodist heritage means that what we do in worship, in fellowship, and in service is distinctly different from our Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, or Hindu friends, neighbors, and co-workers. But we share a lot more in common than you might think. In April and May, St. Luke’s Together In Ministry Everyday (T.I.M.E.) focus is “Tradition!” You’ll find a number of opportunities to explore our faith practices as well as those of other major spiritual traditions. Some important opportunities in April include:
• Traditional Passover Seder Meal, April 9—Take part in the Jewish ritual feast where family and friends come together for reflection, praise, and thanksgiving. • St. Luke’s New Member class, April 18—If you’ve been thinking about joining the church, seize this opportunity to learn more about our United Methodist heritage and practices. • Buddhist Prayer Mandala, April 26-30—Buddhist monks will visit and create a prayer mandala at St. Luke’s so we can experience firsthand the peace and spirituality of this unique art form.

Three mothers from different faith backgrounds gathered after 9/11/01 and discussed their concerns, stereotypes, and misunderstandings as they sought to create a children’s book of the commonalities among their respective traditions. This book is their “memoir of spiritual reflections.” It shares their conversation and personal growth. It challenges us to open dialogue and honest reflection as we seek to understand these religious perspectives with an interfaith audience.

BOOK GROUPS—New members welcome!
Café Conversations Wednesdays, 9:30-11AM, E105 Books available in Oasis. Led by Dr. Marion Miller and Barbara Birdwell In this guide for spiritual growth, The Cup of Our Life, author Joyce Rupp shares how the cup is a rich symbol of life for her with its emptiness and fullness, its brokenness and flaws, and all of its blessings. She explores how the cup (the open cup, the chipped cup, the broken cup, the blessing cup) has taught her valuable faith lessons and offered opportunities to draw closer to God. Be inspired and encouraged with this imagery and take some time to “fill your cup.”

At the Table with Jesus
Living Faithfully as Friends and Family examines a section of the "Social Principles" of The Book of Discipline and The Book of Resolutions. It engages participants in a lively application of United Methodist teaching related to changing gender roles in modern society; sacred worth and human diversity; death and dying; the meaning of Christian marriage; and conflicting perspectives on human reproduction.
Wednesdays, now–April 8, 1–2:30PM, E105 Books available in Oasis. Led by Terri Coe Jesus used food and mealtimes to build community and to teach about the Father, Son and Kingdom. Some of the numerous examples include the wedding at Cana, the call to Levi and to Zaccheus, the banquet parables, eating with Pharisees and also with persons of ill repute, the miraculous feedings with fish and bread. Table Fellowship will deal with the concepts of miracle meals, eucharist, hospitality, etiquette, clean and unclean, and others. This study will help participants experience and appreciate the eucharistic quality of daily life through meals with family, church and other communities and to invite people to God’s table.

COMMUNITY MINISTRIES Fox Hill Elementary / St. Luke’s Partnership With the closing of School 20 this spring, St. Luke’s has decided to partner with another school with many needs. The changing demographics in Washington Township show that Fox Hill Elementary School has a diverse student population, and that 65% of those students qualify for free or reduced lunch. With dwindling numbers of volunteers at the school and its nearby location, it is a perfect match for St. Luke's to form a partnership for the 2009-2010 school year.
If you would like to be on the leadership team to begin planning volunteer opportunities in the areas of event production, mentoring & tutoring, facilities and family support, please contact Julie Sommers Neuman at jsommersneuman@aol.com, or call Jayne Thorne at 846-3404.

Email or call Jim Mellowitz (jmellowitz@sbcglobal.net, 317-251-9245) with your name, phone, email, whether you want to buy a tree, help with planting, or both. (Don't worry parents, we'll make sure you have all the necessary information!). Check the website for more information and registration forms. Contact Kathleen with any questions at headingtonk@stlukesumc.com.

More information and our new online registration can be found at www.stlukesumcblog.com/jhretreat. Total cost of the retreat is $95, but we don't want the cost to keep any interested youth from coming on this great spiritual weekend. Scholarships are available; if you need more information please contact Matt Peyton at peytonm@stlukesumc.com.
There will be NO youth group on Easter Sunday, April 12, so youth have time to celebrate with their families.

OASIS BOOKSTORE & GIFTSHOP This April you'll be doing your own rain dance when you step out in style with umbrellas from the delightful collection at Galleria Enterprise. Choose from names like Degas "Ballet Lesson," Van Gogh "Cafe Terrace," Monet "Poppy Field" or a more contemporary style that features New York, Paris and Venice, just to name a few. We continue to GO GREEN with recycled handbags from Malia Designs, which was formed to increase economic opportunities for women in developing countries. Malia's mission also aims to help victims of human trafficking. Human trafficking is a $10 billion illegal trade affecting almost one million people a year. One way to counteract this global issue is to increase access to economic opportunity in the most affected areas. One of our favorite devotionals this season is called "Jesus Calling." It's a little book with a brief reading for each day, but it is written to speak directly to you with words that give you the hope and love you need to start or end your day.
In these difficult times, we hold our loved ones even closer and keep our faith strong. Sometimes it helps to have symbols of that faith, hope and love. Take a minute this month to look at our beautiful marcasite crosses and lockets, they may be just what you need to keep the focus. OASIS HOURS: TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY SUNDAY

“Who Do You Say That I Am?” A Holy Week Reading of the Gospel of Mark
Mark’s telling of “the good news of Jesus Christ” was likely the first written. Through stark, spare language and a somewhat gloomy (or perhaps realistic) portrayal of the disciples, his narration of Christ’s life and ministry takes on a powerful urgency. Mark’s gospel is challenging and sometimes disturbing as it calls us to answer for ourselves the ultimate question of the identity of Jesus of Nazareth. As part of your Holy Week journey, come hear the good news read, from start to finish without commentary, just as the book’s original audience would have. Wednesday, April 8, 7PM in the Parlor. Readers are Terry Corman, St. Luke’s member, and Matt Peyton, St. Luke’s Associate Director of Junior High Youth.
A Taste of Passover: Experiencing a Seder Meal
The Seder is a special meal filled with ritual to remind the Jews of the significance of the week-long Passover celebration. It can last for hours. Our observance, however, will be an abbreviated experience, highlighting the history and significance of the holiday while sampling the foods included in the meal. Individuals of all ages will enjoy the festive program and will learn about the time God “passed over” the homes of the Egyptian enslaved Israelites—leading to their release and freedom. Thursday, April 9 at 6PM in Fellowship Hall. Registration is helpful; donations will be gratefully accepted.
