Together In Ministry Everyday: Tradition! This month, we continue our focus on the ways we relate to God and to each other through our study of different religious traditions. Our United Methodist heritage means that what we do in worship, in fellowship, and in service is distinctly different from our Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist or Hindu friends, neighbors and coworkers. But we share a lot more in common than you might think. Look for the T.I.M.E. logo next to some Tradition! opportunities being offered this month. Some highlights include:
• Sermon Series. Dr. Millard continues his Tradition! sermons in May with “Our Protestant Heritage” on May 3, “Our Episcopal Heritage” on May 10, and “Our Methodist Heritage” on May 17. • “Talking Through Walls: How the Struggle to Build a Mosque Unites a Community.” See page 8 for more information on this inspiring film. • St. Luke’s Membership Class. Saturday, May 16. Learn about underlying beliefs and outward expressions of faith that make our church what it is. Discover the history of our United Methodist Church and find ways to contribute to and benefit from the St. Luke’s experience. See page 3 for registration details. • Confirmation. Sunday, May 17. This is a special service for the confirmands, their families, friends and mentors, and the entire congregation as we welcome the newest members of our faith.

In this guide for spiritual growth, The Cup of Our Life, author Joyce Rupp shares how the cup is a rich symbol of life for her with its emptiness and fullness, its brokenness and flaws, and all of its blessings. She explores how the cup (the open cup, the chipped cup, the broken cup, the blessing cup) has taught her valuable faith lessons and offered opportunities to draw closer to God. Be inspired and encouraged with this imagery and take some time to “fill your cup.”
Learn background to the Bible, receive an overview of its content, and gain information to make the Bible more understandable. If you are new to studying the Bible or want to “brush up” on your Bible knowledge, this class is for you!

COMMUNITY MINISTRIES School 20 Opportunities
Fox Hill Elementary/St. Luke’s Partnership
As we finish out the last month of our partnership with IPS School 20, there is a need for volunteers at the following events. All are welcome to participate!
With the closing of School 20 this spring, St. Luke’s has decided to partner with another school with many needs. The changing demographics in Washington Township show that Fox Hill Elementary School has a diverse student population, and 65% of those students qualify for free or reduced lunch. With dwindling numbers of volunteers at the school and its nearby location, it is a perfect match for St. Luke's to form a partnership for the 2009-2010 school year.
• We are supplying sweet (and non-sweet) treats for teachers. We need treats (to be dropped off at church on Sunday, 5/17/09) and someone to take them to School 20 on the morning of May 18. • Supervise students (4th grade) on a field trip on May 12 to the Indiana Transportation Museum, located in Noblesville from 10AM-1PM.
If you would like to be on the leadership team to begin planning volunteer opportunities in the areas of event production, mentoring & tutoring, facilities and family support, please contact Julie Sommers Neuman at jsommersneuman@aol.com, or call Jayne Thorne at 846-3404.
• Supervise students (grades K – 5) at Field Day on May 15 at Camp Belzer, located in Lawrence Township from 10AM-1:30PM.
Dress for Success Collection
• Supervise students at the Tiger Extravaganza (end-of-theyear carnival celebration) at School 20 on May 21 from 10AM-3PM (or any part of that time). • Supervise students on a Field Trip to the Zoo (grades K– 6) on May 26 from 9AM-2PM. • Indianapolis Public School is inviting all members of the St. Luke’s community to attend an Open House, celebrating the history and contribution of School 20, on Saturday, May 16, held at the school from 10AM-4PM. Those wanting to volunteer, or those with questions, can contact Julie Hunt at jhunt@msdwt.k12.in.us or at 872-6818.
Dress for Success provides career attire for low-income women who are getting back into the work force. The women's Thursday afternoon book club is holding a drive at the church on Sunday, May 31 to collect clothing and accessories for Dress for Success. They accept professional attire to include suits, dresses, skirts and blouses. They also accept blue and black dress shoes, brown, black and blue purses and jewelry. We will be accepting donations and providing receipts from 9-11AM on Sunday, May 31, and will accept donations without receipts until Friday, June 6. Questions? Contact Judy Sholly at 815-8318.
Fletcher Place Meals Breakfast dates are May 12, 14 and 15, and June 9, 11, 19 and 30. Need donations of food, paper goods or cash to pay for these items. Call Norm Stuart at 293-3535 for more information or to volunteer. Dinner dates are May 18 and 27, and June 15 and 24. Need volunteers to cook, transport and serve or donate food items. See the bulletin board in the hall between Robertson Chapel and Oasis Bookstore to sign up, or call Sue Stuart at 293-3535 for more information.
FELLOWSHIP Passionate Peddling The St. Luke’s Bicycling Group (Passionate People Peddling) will have their first ride Saturday morning May 16. The rides will continue each Saturday until mid-October. The rides will focus on breakfast, fellowship, and a learning experience to improve your bicycle safety and enjoyment. Because we will be riding on streets you must be at least 18. You will need the following: a bicycle in safe working condition, a little money for breakfast and a helmet (no helmet, no ride for you). If you care to purchase a Passionate People Peddling bicycle jersey, they are available in the bookstore for a terrific price (excellent quality). Email rcmmcd@comcast.net to be on the PPP email list.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN UMW Reading Group "The world needs this book ..." - Library Journal
May will bring us together to talk about faith, and we are excited to use The Faith Club, A Muslim, A Christian, A Jew—Three Women Search for Understanding, by Ranya Idliby, Suzanne Oliver and Priscilla Warner as our starting point. It is the story of three mothers who got together to write a picture book for their children that would highlight the connections between their religions. They discovered in the process that they held misunderstandings regarding each others' faith traditions—this began their journey of discovery and discussion. Their book has inspired the formation of Faith Clubs around the country—and we can learn much from our struggles to have open dialog (about ourselves and about others!) Our invitation is open to all women at St. Luke's—we will meet on Monday, May 18 from 7-8:30PM in Kent Millard's office. For more information, please contact Jennifer Todd at jtoddosu@aol.com.
