Welcome, Kevin! On Monday, August 3, St. Luke’s will welcome Kevin Davis as our new Director of Youth Ministries. Kevin completed his BA from Southeastern College in Church Ministries, with a focus on youth ministry, and has nearly completed his Master of Arts at Indiana Wesleyan in Spiritual Leadership. He has nearly 15 years experience working as a youth director and minister, most recently at Christ the Savior Lutheran Church in Fishers. Join us in welcoming Kevin and his family—wife Meloni and children Kori, Clay and Brianna— to the St. Luke’s family. We are excited about Kevin’s passion for working with youth and look forward to seeing how God will use Kevin’s enthusiasm and experience in our vital youth ministry. He will be introduced to the congregation during the morning worship services on Sunday, August 9.

MONTHLY

COMMUNION The T.I.M.E. Theme for August-October is

“In Our Own Backyard” “In Our Own Backyard” strives to blur the lines between what is “mine” and what is “yours” until there is only what is “ours”: our children, our neighborhood, our schools, our families, our community. We are all invited to become inspired and engaged to help remove the fences that separate us and to become connected to the people who share our backyard—those who live and work in the nearby areas surrounding St. Luke’s. “In Our Own Backyard” will be launched on Saturday, August 8, with Servant Day. To help us connect with our neighbors in a positive way, you can join other members of our congregation as we go out into the community to help with a variety of services. We will gather at St. Luke’s at 8AM for breakfast and a prayerful send-off. We will then go into “Our Own Backyard” and perform service projects from 9AM-1:30PM. There will be opportunities available for all ages and abilities. Some of the planned activities include reading and doing crafts with the kids at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent; helping with grounds projects at the Indiana School for the Blind; helping with school supplies; preparing goody bags for incoming kindergartners, and beautifying the kindergarten playground at Fox Hill Elementary School; helping with a cookout at St. Vincent’s New Hope group home; and helping with a variety of projects for Indy Parks and resident activities at Hooverwood and St. Augustine’s nursing homes. A directory listing all of the “In Our Own Backyard” activities and details on each of the Servant Day projects will be passed out at the July 12 service. You can sign up to participate in the Servant Day activities before and after Sunday morning services on July 12, 19, and 26.

We hope you will join us for Servant Day and this opportunity to get to know some of our neighbors In Our Own Backyard.

“Flow: For the Love of Water” a Must See!

“Bottlemania” Book Study As part of our summer focus on water, we will be reading and discussing this interesting book about the bottled water industry. Where does our bottled water come from? What do we actually know about it? What are the costs to the underground water systems? These questions and many more will be part of the discussion on four Thursdays, August 6-27, 7-8:30PM in the Parlor, led by Sharon Chambers. Registration required, no fee. Request book at time of registration.

From both local and global perspectives, this documentary examines the harsh realities behind the mounting water crisis. Learn how politics, pollution and human rights are intertwined in this important issue that affects every being on Earth. With water drying up around the world and the future of human lives at stake, the film urges a call to arms before more of our most precious natural resource evaporates. Friday, July 10, 7PM in Fellowship Hall. No registration or fee.

UNITED METHODIST MEN Unite 2 Fight Against Prostate Cancer!

Men’s Breakfast

Did you know that 1 in 6 men will develop prostate cancer this year? But, if detected early, the survival rate is 99%. Join us on July 11, 2009 for the Little Red Door Cancer Agency's 5K competitive/non-competitive race to raise awareness and local funds for prostate cancer. Last year LRD raised over $92,000.00. This year they hope to double that number and with your help they can. Email Jami Graves at jgraves@littlereddoor.org for additional information and to register. This one's for the guys!

All St. Luke's men and their friends are invited to attend the Men's Breakfast in Fellowship Hall at 8AM on August 1. Our speaker will be Dave Miner, the volunteer executive director of the Interfaith Hunger Initiative (“IHI”); his topic will be "Called to End Hunger." In the age of abundant food there are, in our own backyard, a surprising and unacceptable number of children who are frequently hungry. He will speak about two non-standard, but critical tools for ending hunger. Please contact Peter Johnson at 848-7149 if you plan to attend to assist us in planning the food.

Men's Softball Yes, we do have a church softball team here, and we want you to join us! We play Sunday afternoons at 4PM on the NW side of Indy. We have guys that have played all three years and guys that just joined, so you will fit in great! Let us know if you are interested! n8withan8@yahoo.com, or 340-7115.

Save the Date—Fish Fry The UMM will be hosting a fish fry on October 1 to benefit the Interfaith Hunger Initiative. Mark your calendar now to come out for fellowship and all the fish you can eat, cooked by the men of St. Luke's. If you are interested in helping, contact Matt Roop at 538-5931 or mroop@capcityfence.com. Keep your eyes open for more details!

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN UMW Reading Group We will take the month of July off— happy summer reading! What is Slow Food? Slow Food is an idea, a way of living and a way of eating. It is a global, grassroots movement with thousands of members around the world that links the pleasure of food with a commitment to community and the environment. We will reconvene in August (date/place TBA) to discuss Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. “With characteristic poetry and pluck, Barbara Kingsolver and her family sweep the readers along on their journey away from the industrial-food pipeline to a rural life in which they vow to buy only food raised in their own neighborhood, grow it themselves, or learn to live without it ... Part memoir, part journalistic investigation, the book makes a passionate case for putting the kitchen back at the center of family life and diversified farms at the center of the American diet.” Animal, Vegetable, Miracle has received RAVE reader reviews. We will have an opportunity to learn more about the growing Slow Food movement in Indianapolis, share our recommendations regarding local farmers' markets—"In Our Own Backyard"—and think about the importance of eating

locally grown and fresh inseason foods. New attendees are always welcome. Please contact Jennifer Todd at jtoddosu@aol.com.
