MONTHLY

COMMUNION “In Our Own Backyard” Continues in October “In Our Own Backyard” strives to blur the lines between what is “mine” and what is “yours” until there is only what is “ours”: our children, our neighborhood, our schools, our families, our community. We are all invited to become inspired and engaged to remove the fences that separate us and get connected to the people who share our backyard—those who live and work in the nearby areas surrounding St. Luke’s.

2010 ANNUAL FUND CAMPAIGN In PHILIPPIANS 4:11-12, the apostle Paul writes, “I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned to be content with whatever I have.” During this year’s annual fund campaign, we will be challenged to think about the concept of having “enough,” and how we live our lives financially and spiritually in challenging times and in times of plenty. Beginning October 25, Dr. Millard will be preaching on the themes of The Joy of Simplicity, The Joy of Gratitude, The Joy of Generosity, and the Joy of Contentment. Please prayerfully consider during this period of time how God has blessed your life and how you would like to return the blessings through God’s work being done at St. Luke’s.

This month we focus on the issue of hunger. The Children’s Music Ministry and UMW ask that you simply bring one can (or more!) of food every time you visit St. Luke’s in October. Some of the cans will be used for an artful “Canstruction” display, and all of the cans, boxes or bags of food will be distributed to food pantries in our backyard and in our community. The Children’s Ministry Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard collection will give our children another opportunity to collect and donate canned goods for Vida Nueva. The Interfaith Hunger Initiative is a call to end hunger in Indianapolis and in an area of Kenya by raising awareness, raising NEW money for hunger, and advocating on behalf of the hungry. Many faiths are a part of this effort. A special offering will be taken for IHI in October. Real change is beginning to take place due to this organization’s efforts. On Thursday, October 1 the United Methodist Men will host their first annual fish fry, and a Mystery Trip “in our own backyard” takes place on Saturday, October 10 with an opportunity to learn more about our immediate neighborhood. The UMW Fall Rummage Sale is on October 17, as is the Social Justice Commission’s Pedal For Peace from 4-10PM at the Velodrome. The CROP Walk is on Sunday, October 18. For more details about these October “In Our Own Backyard” events, pick up a copy of the “In Our Own Backyard” catalog at the Information Desk or one of the publication racks in the hallways.

Ever wonder why certain books made it into the Bible while others didn't? Life begs us to constantly ask ourselves "why?" in order to gain knowledge and to drive ourselves forward in growth. Discuss the answers to some of the greatest questions about our Christian traditions, practices, rituals and values. Led by Chris Thornsberry.

CHILDREN’S MUSIC One Can "One Can" is a church-wide collection of canned goods and other non-perishable items for local food pantries in conjunction with the T.I.M.E. initiative "In Our Own Backyard," sponsored by St. Luke's Children's Music Ministries. Each person at St. Luke's is asked to bring at least one can to the building during October to emphasize that each person, young to old, can make a difference by contributing just one food item. This is a program that is in cooperation with the UMW food collection and "Old Mother Hubbard" food collection that happen annually during the month of October. The goal is to collect at least 10,000 food items and bring a visual awareness of what it would look like if every person—every man, woman, boy and girl—would bring just one can to

stock the food pantry. Items should be brought to the church ON OR BEFORE Sunday, October 18 during the morning service when the 10,000 cans will be fully revealed. All ministries in the church are invited to work together to creative interesting displays for all to see. Let's line the halls of St. Luke's with everything from green beans to baby diapers! Let's stack tuna cans, toilet tissue and macaroni and cheese for all to see! Jesus fed 5,000. Why can't we? "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink." MATTHEW 25:35. For more information contact Donita MurphySims at murphysims@yahoo.com or Debra Nethercott at nethercottd@stlukesumc.com or 846-3404 x329.

If you are willing to write a brief note each month (October—May) to one, two, three (or more!) staff people, please contact Julie Hunt at jhunt@msdwt.k12.in.us or at 872-6818. Notes can be dropped off at St. Luke's and will be delivered to Fox Hill (or for snow birds or other travelers, you can mail them directly to the school). Thanks for considering a very tangible way to support the FH staff!

Fletcher Place Meals Breakfast dates are October 8, 13 and 16 and November 10, 12 and 20. Need donations of food, paper goods or cash to pay for these items. Call Norm Stuart at 293-3535 for more information or to volunteer. Butler students and the Empty Nesters will handle St. Luke’s dates in October. Our next dinner date will be November 16. The author’s intention is to give readers encouragement in a daily practice of taking time apart from worldly concerns to "be rooted," to trust and surrender to God.

Join us November 1 as we welcome authors of the longawaited book Tuesday Mornings with The Dads: Stories by Fathers Who Have Lost a Son or Daughter. SINGLES MINISTRIES New Life Circle (formerly Leah Circle) Attention Single Women. . .Have you ever wanted to rewrite or edit your life’s story—delete a chapter or two or tear out a few pages? Story is a metaphor for the way we keep telling ourselves what our lives are about. Come to New Life Circle on Tuesday, October 20 at 7PM in the Spiritual Life Center for “Now That I Have a New Life, What Is My New Story?” Rev. Mary Rudy, inspirational speaker and author, will help us to understand the resources available to us through the Holy Spirit, and tell a new story through our imagination, our thoughts, and our inspired action. Now that Leah Circle has new life as New Life Circle, every single woman is invited to tell a new story of her own life! What are the signs and steps to cooperating with that new life we have called forth with our prayers? Come discover the answer to this question as we move forward together. We promise you an evening of fun and fellowship with a few tricks & treats thrown in! Invite a friend. If possible, please arrive early at 6:30PM to help assemble Halloween party boxes for the Lebanon United Methodist Children’s Home. For additional information, call Nancy at 255-1226 or Cathy at 334-7821. New Life Circle welcomes single, divorced and widowed women of all ages.

SOCIAL JUSTICE Persistence Pays for Pedal 4 Peace! Can you hear the cheers as momentum grows and excitement builds for Pedal 4 Peace on October 17? It's the sounds of joy of those involved in the biking relay at the Velodrome (near Marion College) from 4-10PM as they raise funds for Mar Elias School of Higher Education in Nazareth, Israel. In September we already had 24 teams pledged to raise at least $1000 each toward our $30,000 goal with $10,000 already turned in! Thirty teams is the limit, but there is no limit to how many can ride on each team and how much individuals can donate to the teams. Although this is a secular and interfaith, city-wide event, St. Luke's has at least five teams. Where do you fit in? Get the bike out of storage? Stick some money in a biker's pocket? Sign up for a team in the West Hallway? It will be a super day for the whole family. Singing, DJ & music, contests, fellowship. You can even come and watch for a donation. Come one, come all!
