From Ordinary Space to Sacred Place What happens to transform your own backyard, a grocery store check-out line, a ball diamond or the corner of Meridian and Washington Streets into a memorable and treasured place? Five Central Indiana luminaries will share their personal stories of how an ordinary space was infused with special meaning for them. Singer/songwriter Carrie Newcomer will tell her own experience and then intersperse her favorite songs about sacred spaces as WISH-TV co-anchor Deanna Dewberry, business leader Michael Maurer (honorary chair of 2009 festival), speaker and former WTHR news anchor Anne Ryder, and Marion County Superior Court Judge David Shaheed tell their personal stories. This evening of music and story will invite you into the 2009 Inspiring Places festival and spark your thinking and conversation about sacred places in your own life. Donations welcomed. Women’s Wednesday Afternoon Bible Study Wednesdays, November 4-18, 1-2:30PM in E105 Prophets: Soul Catchers. From the Mysteries of the Bible series I, this five-part study profiles such prophets of the Old Testament as Elijah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Jeremiah, Amos, Hosea and Isaiah. It examines their histories and prophecies, explores the social impact of their voices, and considers the accuracy of their predictions. Consideration will also be given to the role of the prophetic voice in the 21st century. Led by Marti Hunsucker. Wednesday, November 25: No Class Wednesdays, December 2-16: Christmas Carol Bible Study. This video-based, threeepisode Bible study features the classic Dickens' film in black and white. The First Christmas Wednesday, December 2-16, 9:30–11AM in E105 Join us for this short three-week series as we review how biblical accounts of the first Christmas can be placed in our faith journeys today. These stories are historical in context and then thoughtfully explore the meaning of the Gospel accounts of events surrounding the birth of Jesus. The results are new and bring powerful meanings to the Christmas stories for the modern ear. This will be a very informative, interesting, and enlightening discussion.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES Elementary Children's Church
Book Fair
At 9:30AM and 11AM all children grades 1-5 attend Children's Church for large-group worship time. Elementary Children's Church begins October 4. Children attending 9:30AM Sunday School will meet their teachers in Robertson Chapel for a short worship service and then will be escorted back to their classrooms for their lesson. Children attending 11AM Sunday School will meet and pick up in C123, then be escorted to their rotation activity. We will be celebrating World Wide Communion Sunday in Children's Church on Oct. 4.

St. Luke’s is participating in two Habitat home building projects this fall—one is in partnership with other UMC churches to build a new home, and the other is a remodeling project as a part of the interfaith House of Abraham build. Both houses are located in the 3000 block of N. Ralston Ave. Opportunities to volunteer will be on various dates in November. Contact the Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Coordinator, Beth Butcher, at 921-2121 x101 for available dates and times to volunteer and to sign up.
Breakfast dates are November 10, 12 and 20 and December 8, 10, 18 and 29. Need donations of food, paper goods or cash to pay for these items. Fox Hill Elementary School/St. Luke’s Partnership A huge "THANK YOU" to the 42 St. Luke’s volunteers who are coming each week to work with Fox Hill students in the classroom. 1. Fox Hill says Phooey to the Flu! Next time you are at the store, please pick up extra hand sanitizers or disinfectant wipes and drop them in the Fox Hill boxes at St. Luke's. 2. Calling all morning tutors. Tuesday mornings from 8-8:45 Fox Hill second graders are paired with a middle school student or adult volunteer for one-on-one reading at Peer Club. If you are interested, contact Sharon Wilkins at indywilks@att.net. 3. Calling all afternoon mentors. Each school day, more than 80 children stay from 2:30-6PM for After-School Achievers. This program works with students identified as needing extra help. If you would like to work one-on-one with a student on a regular basis, contact Wendy Sommers at wendysommers@comcast.net.

The Emergency Preparedness Committee continues helpful hints in case of emergencies such as natural disasters or a flu pandemic. This month we are focusing on food and nonperishable items you would want to have on hand for an extended stay at home. MUSIC MINISTRIES Experience Surround Sound, St. Luke’s Style
Candlelight Christmas Concert—‘Sing for Joy!’
As part of the Spirit & Place “Public Conversation” event from 3:30-5:30PM on Sunday, November 15, the St. Luke’s Chancel Choir and Children’s Choirs will be joined by singers from eight local choirs and the Indianapolis Brass Choir in performing several polychoral anthems and songs. The mini concert follows an informal discussion between former four-term Indianapolis mayor Bill Hudnut and John Fetterman, the 39-year-old mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, about creating and re-creating inspiring places. Those attending this free event will be flanked on all four sides by singers and musicians for a unique experience that will illustrate one way this can be done. The event is free and open to the public. Don’t miss it!
Mark your calendars now, and call your friends and families! The Candlelight Christmas Concert is at 7:30PM on Friday, December 4, and at 4PM on Saturday, December 5 in the Sanctuary. Most of St. Luke’s Music Department will be on hand, including children’s choirs, orchestra and handbell ringers.
Call for Video Submissions 2009 Candlelight Christmas Concerts Video artists, photographers, image jockeys, and other creative types are invited to submit short (3- or 6-minute) original works set to pre-selected music for consideration to be featured at this year’s Candlelight Christmas Concerts (12/4 & 12/5), bringing a new layer of artistic expression to these musical gatherings. The two selected pieces, “The Dream Isaiah Saw” and “Appalachian Carol,” will be accompanied by live musical performances by the St. Luke’s Chancel Choir and the St. Luke’s Orchestra during the two December concert performances. Submissions are to be in DVD formatting, and can involve sequencing photographic images and/or texts or original digital video compositions, which will be integrated into MediaShout projected presentation at the concerts. This year’s free concert takes its inspiration from another central figure in the Christmas story: Mary. The program and selections reflect the words and spirit of her song that begins with “My soul glorifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” Nearly 300 musicians, ranging in age from 7 to 87, will present anthems and well-loved carols conveying the messages of joy, blessing, mercy and peace. Special guest artists will also join the St. Luke’s musical family to add a special note to the interpretation of some of the selections. The concert will include great traditional carols, movements from J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Franck’s Panis Angelicus, and new settings of “Magnificat” and “Infant Holy, Infant Lowly” all which will make our journey with Mary a meaningful way to begin the season. The concerts are free and open to the public; a free-will offering will be received to defray concert expenses.
There’s No Such Thing As Too Much (good) Christmas Music Metro Ministries, the mission and program arm of all Indianapolis Methodist churches, will sponsor a Christmas event at 3PM on Sunday, December 13, at Broadway United Methodist Church, 609 E. 29th St. Metro Ministries supports several community centers, including Fletcher Place and Brightwood. Donations from this event, at which our Chancel Choir is the featured musical ensemble, will support programs at these centers. Admission: $8, and the full ticket price will go toward Metro Ministries for Mission and Ministry projects in 2010.

John Fetterman, the tattooed mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, and Bill Hudnut, the venerated mayor of Indianapolis from 1976-1991, join Indiana author and moderator Scott Russell Sanders in the 14th annual Public Conversation. Spearheading community development in very different cities and in very different times, these two entrepreneurial public servants will share how to create and re-create inspiring places. Eavesdrop on their conversation, participate in the audience Q&A, and enjoy the concluding performance, organized by our own Mark Squire. Multiple university, congregational, and community choirs, as well as the Indianapolis Brass Choir, will join forces in a sonic exploration of space. Highlighting polychoral repertoire in various styles, this “surround sound” experience will feature spatially separate choirs as well as images of the sacred places that inspired the compositions.

What Is a Prayer Shawl Ministry? Prayer shawls are given to those needing to be wrapped in God’s healing love. They are knitted or crocheted in rectangular or triangular shapes with donated yarn by prayerful volunteers who like to knit or crochet and love the fellowship of working together. If you are not a knitter, you could be a part of this ministry by donating yarn or money to purchase yarn. You could also join in the fellowship and help with non-knitting tasks like fringing and tagging. The evening group is led by Edie Huffman (228-0496). Collecting Donations for Fletcher Place Christmas
All men are invited to the United Methodist Men’s monthly breakfast on Saturday, November 7 and December 5 at 8AM. We offer a hearty breakfast, fellowship, sharing and an interesting program. Our speaker for November in Fellowship Hall will be Rich Potterf, St. Luke’s Director of Building and Grounds. He will share his experiences in Zimbabwe this fall digging wells and installing water purification systems. His passion and his story are powerful.
St. Luke’s United Methodist Women are collecting donations for the Fletcher Place Christmas Shopping Program now through Monday, November 30, although cash donations will be accepted through Christmas. This program serves up to 300 needy families with low/no income. All donations must be NEW AND UNWRAPPED. Clothing and gifts for children of all ages are needed, but the area of most need is teen boys. Parent gifts are also needed, including blankets and items for the home and bath. Need ideas? Pick up a shopping list at the Information Desk. Donations can be placed in the wooden collection bins in the West Passage. Eve Circle will be delivering the items on Tuesday, December 1. WORLD MISSIONS Join a Team to Sierra Leone You are invited to join one of three Medical Continuing Education Teams organized to serve in Sierra Leone next year. They will leave January 9, 23, or April 10, 2010, to serve for two weeks each. You would work with hospital and clinic staffs to improve health care services at The United Methodist General Hospital at Kissy in Freetown, Mercy Hospital in Bo and a small clinic at Taiama, a rural village up country. Participants are needed in disciplines such as ultra-sound technology, medical records, medicine, dentistry, nutrition, building and equipment maintenance, finance, management and other allied health disciplines. A Listening Heart: Bible Study for Women with Young Children
Thursday Afternoon Book Study

We encourage making time for scripture reading, digging deeper into our faith and reflecting on what we have learned. This study is both challenging, but “beginner” friendly. Family Support Group
Parents' Day Out
Wednesdays, November 11 and December 9, 6:30PM, Main Office Conference Room. The group offers emotional and spiritual support for families who have a member abusing drugs or alcohol.
Classes (9AM-1PM) offered for children ages ten months (by (9/1/09) to three years. PDO was established to provide parents of young children time for themselves on a regular basis. Children participate in structured play in a safe and nurturing Christian environment one, two or three days per week. Opportunities are provided for children to learn beginning social skills while having fun.
Adult ADD Support Group Thursday, November 2, 7PM in W125: “Time Management” with Sandy Maynard. Tuesday, November 24, 7PM in W125. St. Luke’s offers support for adults with ADD. The group meets the 4th Tuesday of each month. For information call Mary Katherine at 846-3404 x365.
CHILDREN’S MUSIC CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES Sunday School Children are always welcome to join Sunday School throughout the year. Pick up and return registration forms outside the Education Office. Greeters are available near door 16 and in Robertson Chapel (at 9:30AM) to place your child in a class on Sunday morning.
Early Childhood Music September-May. Preschool, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students can attend this bi-monthly worship experience with their classes during the 9:30 and 11AM services. Children learn, sing, pray and celebrate special holidays.
Children’s Commission Become a member of Commission on Children’s Ministry (“COCM”). We brainstorm and staff events such as Palm Sunday Reenactment, Mother’s Day Flowers and more. Preschool Classes (9AM-1PM) for three-year-old (by 9/1/09) to five-year-old children are offered in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. All teachers are experienced, qualified, well-trained and strive to maintain strong relationships with the children and their families. Preschool offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum where children may grow socially, creatively, emotionally, cognitively, and physically.

Voice for Life Meets Tuesday, 6–6:30PM A program for music theory, ear training and overall musician training. Participants can earn RSCM ribbons and medals. Open to any singer participating in Crescendo! or The Choristers.
