Now Is the TIME During January and February 2010, St. Luke’s will focus on the theme “Now Is the TIME.” We are encouraging everyone to look at the areas of their lives where they put off what they know they should be doing and say Now is the Time to move to a new, more effective way of living. Make 2010 your year to be Together In Ministry Everyday in every facet of your life. Dr. Millard’s sermon series for the first two months of 2010 (see left) will focus on joining together as a community to support each other in not procrastinating, and in taking some small steps towards a better life. God gives us just one day at a time. When we overcome procrastination and recognize the small steps we can take today towards a better life for ourselves and our community, God can use us all to transform the world. NOW IS THE TIME!! Look for the Now Is the TIME clock logo throughout this publication. It indicates events or opportunities featured at the Open House or during the Now Is the TIME theme period through mid-February.

Café Conversations

Women’s Wednesday Afternoon Bible Study

Wednesdays, January 6-February 10, 9:30-11AM in E105. Finding God in the Questions is authored by Dr. Timothy Johnson, medical editor of ABC-TV. He started out to be a Protestant minister; however, drawn by his experience as a hospital chaplain and by a scientific turn of mind that caused him to question everything including his faith, two years out of divinity school he changed direction and entered medical school at age 29. Johnson has continued to explore the "big questions" of religion. He remains a believer and says he has become "comfortable with intellectual and spiritual doubt—it stimulates me to think about what I really believe." Discuss what he says and you believe regarding questions such as: Does God Exist? Is the Universe An Accident? What Is God Like? Why Bother With Religion and God? Is God In Control? How Should Faith Shape Our Lives? Led by Dr. Marion Miller.

Wednesdays, January 6-March 24, 1-2:30PM in E105. Eclipsing Empire: Paul, Rome, and the Kingdom Of God. Join preeminent New Testament scholars Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan on location as they trace the Apostle Paul's footsteps throughout the Roman Empire. This 12session study explores fresh insights into Paul's message of the Kingdom of God, its challenge to Roman imperial theology, and the apostle's radical relevance for today. Each 20-minute video segment features a brief travelogue on a location significant for the study of Paul. NOTE: Eclipsing Empire was filmed in HD across Turkey, Greece, and Italy. Led by Bruce Roberts and Linda Etherton. (See pg. 9 for Sunday option.)

Adult Ministries Information Tables Sunday, January 10, 9AM– 12:30PM, Parlor. Bible Basics

What Do I Really Believe?

Wednesdays, January 13-February 10, 7-8:30PM in E104. Pre-registration requested. Become more comfortable using the Bible by being able to find books, chapters, and verses more easily; examine and understand the various translations of the Bible; gain a brief overview of the Biblical story —identifying key people, places, and events; and explore ways Bible study can be used as a resource for daily faithliving. Led by Dr. Marion Miller.

Tuesdays, February 2–February 23, 1:30-3:00PM in E105. Registration required. This question is really important, particularly when you deal with theological issues! How you answer it will make a difference in the way you think, the way you feel, and the way you live. To assist you in working out your beliefs, Dr. Adolf Hansen, our Theologian in Residence, will utilize the categories “progressive Christianity” and “evangelical Christianity.” Rather than choose between them—though you may do that—he will suggest that you select points from each of them (and perhaps add other points as well). Such a class will create an exciting and provocative experience for all who sign up!

The Year of Living Biblically 3 Options Available for Study and Discussion • Sundays, January 17–31, 9:30–10:30AM, Parlor • Sundays, January 17–31, 11–Noon, Parlor • Thursdays, January 21–February 25, 7–8:30PM, Parlor Pre-registration requested The Year of Living Biblically is about author A. J. Jacobs’ quest to live the ultimate biblical life. For him, this meant following every single rule in the Bible—as literally as possible. He obeyed the famous ones—the Ten Commandments, love thy neighbor, and be fruitful and multiply—but also, the hundreds of oft-ignored ones such as “do not wear clothes of mixed fibers” or “do not shave your beard.” According to Jacobs, “The resulting year was fascinating, entertaining and informative. It was equal parts irreverent and reverent. It was filled with surprising insights almost every day.” The book that came out of the year has several layers: an exploration of some of the Bible’s startlingly relevant rules; an investigation of the rules that baffle the 21st century brain; and a deeply spiritual journey that surprised the avowed agnostic. ••• Plan to hear A.J. Jacobs in person when he speaks at St. Luke's on Tuesday, March 2, 7PM. For information on A.J., check him out at www.ajjacobs.com. Led by Chris Thornsberry.

Have a Little Faith February 7 & 14, 11AM–Noon, Parlor. Have a Little Faith is Mitch Albom's first nonfiction book since Tuesdays with Morrie. It begins with an unusual request: an eighty-twoyear-old rabbi from Albom's old hometown asks him to deliver his eulogy. Feeling unworthy, Albom insists on understanding the man better, which throws him back into a world of faith he'd left years ago. Meanwhile, closer to his current home, Albom becomes involved with a Detroit pastor—a reformed drug dealer and convict—who preaches to the poor and homeless in a decaying church with a hole in its roof. Moving between their worlds, Albom observes how these very different men employ faith similarly in fighting for survival. Have a Little Faith is a book about a life's purpose; about losing belief and finding it again; about the divine spark inside us all. It is one man's journey, but it is everyone's story! Led by Marsha Reynolds and Terri Coe. (This book is also being discussed by the UMW Reading Group on January 25 at 7PM.)

We usually think of Bible characters as dressed with their Sunday best—lookin' good, smelling of accomplishment, and holding the posture of unshakeable faith. We marvel at these "flawless saints" while thinking, "Wow! I'm not worthy!" Hey, not so fast. Believe it or not, the most celebrated people in the Bible were plagued by doubt, bad decisions, and less than perfect reputations. In a word, most were losers! And yet, God had plans that would take them beyond their humble, imperfect lives and dub them proud members of the "losers" club. Losers Club is a real-life look at famous Bible figures such as Moses, Solomon, David, Thomas, Rahab, and others. Each vignette reveals people who struggle with weak faith, confusion, and frustration--people very much like you and me! These stories will help you connect with these flawed heroes, find encouragement in their stories, and get inspired by God's love and care for "losers."
