As the relief efforts in Haiti continue for months and years ahead, monetary donations are critical. If you would like to make a donation to the St. Luke’s Haiti Relief fund, you may do so online at www.stlukesumc.com, or place a check in the offering plate made out to St. Luke’s UMC with Haiti Relief Fund on the memo line. All donations received will be split evenly between the United Methodist Committee on Relief, and our St. Luke’s World Mission projects in Haiti. As volunteer opportunities become available, they will be posted on our website and communicated from our World Missions Commission. There will be a need for volunteers, but it is anticipated that it will be several months before volunteer mission trips can take place. If you are interested in being contacted about going on a mission trip, contact Jan Nichols, St. Luke’s Coordinator of World Missions Projects, at nicholsj@stlukesumc.com, or 8463404 x364.

What Do I Really Believe?
Have a Little Faith
Tuesdays, February 2–February 23, 1:30-3:00PM in E105. Registration required. This question is really important, particularly when you deal with theological issues! How you answer it will make a difference in the way you think, the way you feel, and the way you live. To assist you in working out your beliefs, Dr. Adolf Hansen, our Theologian in Residence, will utilize the categories “progressive Christianity” and “evangelical Christianity.” Rather than choose between them— though you may do that—he will suggest that you select points from each of them (and perhaps add other points as well). Such a class will create an exciting and provocative experience for all who sign up!
February 7 & 14, 11AM–Noon, Parlor. Have a Little Faith is Mitch Albom's first nonfiction book since Tuesdays with Morrie. It begins with an unusual request: an eighty-twoyear-old rabbi from Albom's old hometown asks him to deliver his eulogy. Feeling unworthy, Albom insists on understanding the man better, which throws him back into a world of faith he'd left years ago. Meanwhile, closer to his current home, Albom becomes involved with a Detroit pastor—a reformed drug dealer and convict—who preaches to the poor and homeless in a decaying church with a hole in its roof. Moving between their worlds, Albom observes how these very different men employ faith similarly in fighting for survival. Have a Little Faith is a book about a life's purpose; about losing belief and finding it again; about the divine spark inside us all. It is one man's journey, but it is everyone's story! Led by Marsha Reynolds and Terri Coe.

If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat Sundays, February 7-March 14, 4:30-5:30PM in the Parlor. Pre-registration helpful; childcare available upon request. "Lord, if it's you, tell me to come to you on the water," Simon Peter. Peter may have been the first one out of the boat, but Jesus' invitation to walk on water is for us all. But walk on water...what does that mean? Come join us for an exciting "out of the boat" experience answering Christ's call to greater faith, transcending fear, managing failure, and trusting God. This series will feature video clips, group discussions, and personal journaling. The book is optional and may be purchased in Oasis. Led by Terri Jump.
Café Conversations Wednesdays, February 17-March 31, 9:30-11AM in E105. Adam Hamilton is the author of 24 Hours That Changed the World, the book we will discuss during Lent. He is the pastor of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, one of the fastest growing, most highly visible churches in the country. In this book, Hamilton expounds on the fact that there is no single event in human history that has received more attention than the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. As a class, we will use this book, along with a devotional and DVD, to guide participants through the last 24 hours of Jesus' life during the Lenten season. Each chapter is designed to help participants experience and understand the significance of Jesus' suffering and death in a way you never have before. Whether participants are long-time Christians or simply curious about the story of Christ's crucifixion, you are invited to join the class in retracing the last 24 hours of Jesus' life. Led by Dr. Marion Miller.
Hope in the Midst of Loss Thursdays, February 18-March 25, 7-9PM in N101102. Pre-registration required; class limited to 20 participants. Childcare available upon request. Everyone experiences loss, whether it’s the breakup of a relationship, the loss of a job, a divorce, the loss of a home, a death, or some other loss; but not everyone experiences hope when they are dealing with a loss. This class is designed to help you experience hope in the midst of loss. It will provide insights that will enable you to understand a) your own attachments, b) the breaks that have taken place in your attachments (that is, your losses), and 3) the resources you have to get you through them. It is led by Dr. Adolf Hansen, our Theologian in Residence, who is the author of Responding to Loss: A Resource for Caregivers, the text for this class (available through Oasis).

Because the Kingdom of God is Among You Sundays, February 21-March 28, 11AM-Noon in the Parlor. In Luke 17:21, Jesus says, “The kingdom of God is among you.” Using John Indermark’s book Parables and Passion: Jesus’ Stories for the Days of Lent, we will explore the meaning of this statement. Join with others to discuss parables such as the mustard seed, hidden treasure, the rich man and Lazarus, wise and foolish bridesmaids, tares among wheat, a wedding banquet and more. Share parables from life today that remind us of God’s presence with us. Led by Terri Coe.
The Gift of Years Sundays, February 21-March 28, 12:15-1:45PM in E105. Pre-registration required. Come and join a group of mature adults as we study the different facets of growing older gracefully as described by Joan Chittiser in her book The Gift of Years. Study aspects of life that you may have never thought about and how you can be more gracious to others in your life. Lunch will be available (to order at cost) if you want to eat after class or take it home with you. Please indicate your desire for lunch when you register for class with DeAnna Moran. Led by Barb Hale.
Going Deeper with the Parables Mondays, February 22-March 29, 7-8:30PM in E105. Pre-registration helpful; childcare available upon request. A handful of yeast. A wayward son. A wedding banquet. These were just some of the images Jesus used to make the kingdom of God understandable and accessible to his listeners. Many of his stories are familiar to us today, but we often fail to grasp how revolutionary Jesus' message really was. In this study we'll explore six parables of Jesus--each session will include video clips exposing us to fresh insights into the parables and group discussions to help connect their meaning to everyday life. Don't let the word "deeper" scare you—this study is designed for anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of Jesus' message. The book, The Parables of Jesus edited by Matt Williams, may be purchased in Oasis. However, it is not required. Led by Rev. David Williamson.
Instruction for the Biblically Challenged Mondays, February 22-March 29, 7-9PM in E107-109. Pre-registration required; material fees, $20. Childcare available upon request. Learn background to the Bible, receive an overview of its content, and gain information to make the Bible more understandable. If you are new to studying the Bible or want to “brush up” on your Bible knowledge, this class is for you! Led by Ken Knowles.

Walking the Bible Wednesdays, March 3-24, 7-8:30PM in E213. Pre-registration helpful. Childcare available upon request. Bruce Feiler is the New York Times bestselling author of seven books, including Walking the Bible: A Photographic Journey. Taking a oncein-a-lifetime journey, Feiler crosses three continents visiting key places while learning more of the stories of men and women highlighted in the first five books of the Bible. He offers insights into the shared roots of faith by Christians and Jews. In reading his book and watching his photo diary by means of DVDs, we too, will visit the desert outpost where Abraham first heard the words of God; scale the summit where Moses received the Ten Commandments; cross the Red Sea; climb Mount Sinai, and watch as Feiler touches the burning bush. A copy of the book may be purchased in Oasis. Led by Terri Coe.
The Prodigal God Thursdays, March 4-April 8 (excluding 4/1), 7-8:30PM in the Parlor. Pre-registration helpful. Childcare available upon request. In The Prodigal God, author Timothy Keller uses one of the best-known parables to reveal a message of hope and salvation. He uncovers the essential message of Jesus, locked inside his most familiar parable. Within that parable Jesus reveals God's prodigal grace. This book will challenge both the devout and skeptics to see Christianity in a whole new way. Led by Chris Thornsberry.
Disciple Lite: New Testament Wednesdays, March 10–April 28, 7-8:30PM inE106. Pre-registration helpful. Childcare available upon request. Who is Jesus and what is his significance for our lives? Using Matthew's Gospel as a starting point, this study explores how the New Testament writers and the early Christian community wrestled with the coming of Jesus—his life, actions, mission, death, and resurrection— and the implications of his arrival for their lives and their communities of faith. Moving through the Gospel of Matthew sequentially, the overarching themes from this story of Jesus provide the conversation topics for each of the eight sessions. Each theme is then traced through other related passages in the New Testament. Participants are invited to join this conversation, to study afresh this story of Jesus, and to learn more about their calling to discipleship and to community. Led by Dr. Michael Condit.
