February 2014 Communion
It’s coming! St. Luke’s is expanding its family of worship styles on March 9. And helping to bring to fruition this “bold new thing” God is doing is our new Contemporary Worship and Arts Leader, Fran (Francis) Wyatt, Jr. The search team for this position was tasked with locating, interviewing and hiring a “vibrant, authentic, experienced, and passionate” person to bring to life St. Luke’s vision for a new non-traditional worship service designed to reach greater numbers of young people, and help people grow in their faith.
Both... Upholding Tradition in our New, Non-Traditional Worship Service with Fran (Francis) Wyatt, Jr.
After four months of a nationwide search, St. Luke’s is thrilled to welcome Fran Wyatt to our church family, and to Indianapolis. He comes to us from Willow Creek Church, Chicago, where he served as the Music Director and Worship Arts Pastor since 2006. He also served for seven years as the Music Director at Ginghamsburg United Methodist Church in Tipp City, OH. When asked what led him to St. Luke’s, Fran replied, “The cloud moved…and we try our best to follow God’s guidance and calling.” St. Luke’s Senior Pastor Rob Fuquay is confident he’s found the right person for the job. “I believe God’s hand was strongly involved in bringing Fran and Cheryl Wyatt to St. Luke’s. The way we found out about each other was definitely a God-thing. My friend, Mike Slaughter, senior pastor of Ginghamsburg UMC where Fran served as worship leader for seven years, says Fran and Cheryl are gems and have great hearts for Christ and the mission of the church. They are fun, funny, real, loving, talented people you will enjoy getting to know.” Self-described as a “true musical mutt,” Fran swims in the deep end of the musical talent pool. He is a professional musician with 30 years of experience in various professional musical settings and worship arts ministries, and is competent as a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. On the subject of his musical experience, Fran says, “I’ve led and played every type of ensemble imaginable—jazz, orchestra, country, rock, funk, Greek band, chamber music, and others.” Beyond his performance gifts and wide taste in musical styles, Fran is also skilled in music directing, composition and arranging, worship leading, worship service development, and sound and music technology. It was during his 10 years as a professional musician in the United States Air Force Band that Fran met his wife Cheryl, an accomplished vocalist. Married for 23 years, they have two adult children, April and Brandon, both 21. Fran and Cheryl speak fondly of the warm welcome they received when they visited St. Luke’s in early December and through the Christmas holidays. They have now relocated to Indianapolis from Chicago and Fran officially began his new role January 2. They both look forward to becoming fully involved in the life of our church. Fran shares that he was attracted to St. Luke’s because of the strong traditional services we offer, and the opportunities that exist to incorporate those traditional elements in a creative way into contemporary worship. “There is a wonderful tradition here at St. Luke’s. And I can tell that God is alive and moving in this congregation. I think what I feel called to is helping that same

Fun Facts About Fran Born? I was born in St. Louis (8/26/65) to Francis, Sr. and Juanita L. Wyatt Parents? My mom was both mother and father to me for so many years due to the fact that my father passed when I was 12 years old. I know now that she did everything she could to insure that I grew up as complete and well-adjusted as possible. I hope I’m as good of a father as she was to me. Siblings? I have 3 sisters, 2 older and one younger. They all still live in St. Louis. Education? I studied music at SIU-Edwardsville. I was a jazz major, then I spent 10 years in the Air Force Band. Favorite food? Sushi and Cajun Pasta (not necessarily together!)
Fran and his wife, Cheryl, have been married for 23 years. They met while Fran served as a musician in the United States Air Force Band. presence continue to be expressed in and to the next generation of believers. To me ‘traditional worship’ doesn’t have a date stamp on it, so I’m looking forward to seeing what impact it will have as we discover what ‘contemporary’ looks like here at St. Luke’s. I believe ‘both…and’ is the only option in this journey.” More Than Music Expressing a love of lifting up God’s people, especially through music, Fran describes his worship style as energetic, passionate, responsive and inclusive. “Whenever I lead worship, my desire is to create experiences that are engaging and unique so that people might leave filled with the love of Christ. I try to create opportunities for that through the arts.” Acknowledging that “contemporary” worship means different things to different people, Fran says, “I think contemporary is the word we use so often because we don’t have a better one. Much of what we hear today will be considered traditional in 20 years. My approach to ‘contemporary’ is the use of familiar and unfamiliar styles to help a broader, diverse culture experience the wonderful mercy and powerful grace of Christ. When the Spirit of God is present, it all becomes tools for change.” To allay anyone’s anxiety about a new style of worship, Fran states, “Different does not automatically translate to louder. I believe there are several ways
Favorite movie? I’m an action and science fiction junky… but my wife has helped me connect with my sensitive side. Favorite book? I’ve been reading more about leadership for the last 5 years but I hope to re-engage my heart and mind on things more creative. I’m open to suggestions. Favorite singer? February 2014 Communion
Fran asks, “What DO you do?” As he designs a worship service that reflects the talents and personality of the St. Luke’s congregation, this is the question Fran will be asking: “What DO you do?” “I don’t want to recruit to a specific skill set and risk overlooking unique giftings right in front of me. So instead of asking, ‘Do you play this instrument or that?’ I’ll instead let people tell me how they would like to contribute.”
Ways to Get Involved @10:45 1. Invite friends and family! Help us spread the word that your church is offering a dynamic new way to celebrate God’s love. Forward the web site: stlukes1045.com. 2. Offer your talents. All creative and supportive types are needed! From musicians, vocalists and dramatic artists to ushers, section leaders and administrative helpers... we need you.
“The cloud moved… and we try our best to follow God’s guidance and calling.” to create intensity, density and tension – volume being just one of them. We will explore what works best in the sanctuary of St. Luke’s. What we are not going to do is take a snapshot of the contemporary experience from any other church and force it into our space. There is something unique I believe God has in store for our community.” Fran expresses a love of empowering leaders and working with volunteers. “I love building teams and seeing people grow in their calling. I believe there is something powerful about staff professionals and gifted volunteers sharing wisdom and experience. This is an awesome opportunity to pour ourselves into something that will change lives and bear fruit for future generations.” Fran’s philosophy on volunteer recruitment is to ask the question, “What DO you do?” instead of trying to pigeon hole performers into specific roles. The music of this service will be shaped by and be a direct reflection of the musical talent of the St. Luke’s congregation. To learn of ways you can lend your talents to the new service or to schedule an audition, you may contact Fran directly at wyattf@stlukesumc.com.

Café Conversation: Messy Spirituality
Leader: Dr. Marion Miller, Pastor, Later@St. Luke’s Wednesdays, through February 26, 9:30-11AM, Room E105 Have you ever thought or said, “I’m not a very good Christian?” By that, did you feel like: “ I don’t pray enough; I don’t read my Bible enough; I don’t share my faith enough; I don’t love God enough; I’m not committed enough; I’m not spiritual enough …” and so on? If yes, then this book is for you! Messy Spirituality by Mike Yaconelli was written for the silent majority of us who have been convinced that we just don’t do Christianity right. We spend most of our lives worried about what we don’t do instead of what we have done, focused on our imperfections instead of God’s fondness for the imperfect. Why? Because we’ve been bombarded with books, tapes, talks, seminars, and movies convincing us that real Christianity is all about perfection. But, is it? Join us for the conversation. The book can be purchased in the Oasis Bookstore.
Women’s Bible Study: From Aging to Saging
Leader: Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries Wednesdays, through February 26, 1:15-2:15PM, Room W125 Author, Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi felt an uneasiness as he was growing older. Fears about death and infirmity were haunting him. His solution was to go on a quest to investigate how to turn aging into the most meaningful and truly wonderful time of life. In this book, he shows us how to create an aging process characterized by adventure, passion, mystery, and fulfillment. Using brain/mind research, he gives us the means to combat the negative aspects of growing older. By harnessing the power of the spirit, he gives us ways to use our life experiences to nurture, heal, and assist the generations that follow us.

In February, we’re on a mission of love! Jesus loves everyone. Everyone! He loves you. He loves me. He even loves that lady down the street who never comes outside. He loves the man at the grocery store. He loves the lady at the deli. Jesus loves everyone! We want our preschoolers to know that simple truth. Jesus loves them and everyone around them. We will hear stories of how Jesus loved during His time on earth. How He loved the woman at the well and the scorned woman even though no one else did. How He loves us even when we do something wrong like He loved the Zacchaeus. Our preschoolers will also hear about how everyone needs Jesus and that we should tell others about Him. Each week’s lesson will come back to one simple truth: Jesus loves everyone.

Faith is believing in what you can’t see because of what you can see. Sometimes we lose sight of what God’s doing in our lives. But we can see all of the many other ways God reveals Himself. Through the things we can see, we can believe that what the Bible says about God is true. When we recognize God at work around us, we respond to Him with trust. We have confidence He has a plan for our lives, and we are willing to take risks to see that plan accomplished. Even in our
moments of doubt, God will show us something to remind us to have faith. The monthly memory verse is: “Faith is being sure of what we hope for. It is being certain of what we do not see,” Hebrews 11:1

Consider enrolling your child in the program where they can not only learn to enjoy music, but also to offer the gift of music to the congregation. Everyone will be blessed! We further believe that early childhood education should help provide enriching educational experiences in the developmental areas of the child’s life. Growth in emotional maturity, social competence, physical skill development, creativity, language, cognition and perception are the areas that this program shall strive to promote. Outreach Ministries LOCAL service opportunities
During 2013, SAWs set a new record by building over 100 wheelchair ramps. Our ten year total is approximately 550 ramps! For our final two ramps in December we had to use hammers to break away the boards from the frozen forklift loads! With that in mind, we are waiting for less frigid temperatures to kick off building ramps in 2014. We look forward to a deeply rewarding Outreach mission again this year, helping as many people as possible become free from their homes via their new wheelchair ramps. Outreach, Inc. SAWs: Servants at Work
23
Reliable and efficient transportation is a major barrier for the youth of Outreach, Inc. It is not uncommon for youth to spend three or more hours a day on foot in order to attend school, make provider appointments, or get to and from work. Many walk 45 minutes or more to get to the Outreach Drop-In Center. Providing bus passes for youth is one way to help keep medical, mental health, housing and other appointments. Also, youth engaged in full-time work or school consistently voice the need for a driver’s license. For more information on Outreach, Inc. volunteering, contact Jackie Reed at 332-6550 or jsrmolar@sbcglobal.net. Here are a few specific ways to help youth with transportation needs: • Purchase IndyGo one-day ($4) bus passes. Please mail passes (or checks with “bus pass” in the memo line) to P.O. Box 11416,

English as a Second Language Classes at St. Luke’s St. Luke’s is offering English as a Second Language (ESL) classes in the Fellowship Hall from 6-8PM. A meal is served to the entire family (adult students and their children) before transitioning to the class. While parents are learning English, children have an opportunity for homework help and recreation time. This class is eight sessions (Ash Wednesday being a week off) and will finish on March 19.
We will need plenty of volunteer servants to pull this off! If you would like to be a part of the weekly ministry please sign up at www.stlukesumc.com/outreach/ local or contact Julie Sommers Neuman at jsommersneuman@gmail.com or Pastor Jamalyn at williamsonj@stlukesumc.com. Men’s Group for Loss of a Spouse
Every Thursday from 1-2PM in Luke’s Lodge (building located behind St. Luke’s) When men lose their wives to death, life turns upside-down in many different ways. Husbands who are mourning the death of their soul mate may have similar grief issues as women. However, sometimes that embedded message of, “real men don’t cry,” discourages opportunities for processing and healing with the support of others. This men’s group will meet for fellowship and support and to allow a safe and confidential place to “say it all” with other men who mutually understand this complex journey. “REAL MEN” do cry and also “REAL MEN” laugh and even drink coffee together! If you have lost a spouse recently or years ago, or know of someone in the community who needs support, all are invited to join. For any further details, call Bob Shive at 317-253-8184.
Dad’s Group
For any father who has lost a young adult child to illness, accident, suicide, or other. The Dad’s group meets every Tuesday at 7AM for light breakfast at the Hilton Indianapolis North Hotel, 8181 N. Shadeland, and Thursdays at 7AM at Denny’s at I-65 / Greenwood Exit.
One-on-One Grief Counseling
Sometimes the pain of a significant loss needs the benefit of time before the idea of group support feels right. If you, or someone you know in your family, workplace or neighborhood would benefit from a one-on-one session of grief counseling, contact St. Luke’s at 317-846-3404. Wholeness and health is the goal of working through loss; we hope no one considers doing it alone.
Member Care Grief Ministry Mentors
If you have experienced a loss and are not ready for group support or individual counseling, but would like a supportive friend to talk about your grief journey, Grief Ministry Mentors might be for you. Sometimes just a phone call makes all the difference. There is no commitment or time table. Also, if you are someone who has gifts of compassion and empathy for those going through loss, consider becoming a Grief Ministry Mentor. For more information, call 317-846-3404.

St. Luke’s hopes to have 100 small groups totaling more than 1,000 people meeting in homes, restaurants, work places, at the church, online, and at retirement centers during Lent. Groups are available every day of the week, morning, noon and night! These groups will be reflecting on the Sunday sermon series: Racing Through Life. If you would like to get connected with a small group of people, learn and discuss the weekly sermon, and make new friends, treat yourself to a fun, inspiring time for five weeks! Everyone is invited. Here’s how it works: On Ash Wednesday, March 5, we will all meet for an Ash Wednesday Service at St. Luke’s. After the service you will quickly meet the host of your group and the others in the group. Then you will attend your small group for the next five weeks (March 9-April 12). Most groups will meet for 1-1/2 hours. Each week you will get to know your group better, discuss your thoughts from the sermon the Sunday before (a discussion guide is provided) and enjoy refreshments together. There is no homework! (If you have to miss worship you can watch the sermon online before you come.) The experience will conclude with a wonderful Palm Sunday morning (April 13) experience in worship, followed by Holy Week, which has many options for your group to try together if possible. We will all conclude the season with a glorious Easter Sunday morning.
