Adult Ministries Adult Education Café Conversation: Messy Spirituality

To pre-register for a class, go to www.stlukesumc. com and search for class title on home page search box. Or contact Jilliane Pruiett at pruiettj@ stlukesumc.com or 846-3404 x364. Oasis = Oasis Bookstore and Gift Shop located inside St. Luke’s.

Leader: Dr. Marion Miller, Pastor, Later@St. Luke’s Wednesdays, January 8-February 26, 9:30-11AM, Room E105 Have you ever thought or said, “I’m not a very good Christian?” By that, did you feel like: “ I don’t pray enough; I don’t read my Bible enough; I don’t share my faith enough; I don’t love God enough; I’m not committed enough; I’m not spiritual enough …” and so on? If yes, then this book is for you! Messy Spirituality by Mike Yaconelli was written for the silent majority of us who have been convinced that we just don’t do Christianity right. We spend most of our lives worried about what we don’t do instead of what we have done, focused on our imperfections instead of God’s fondness for the imperfect. Why? Because we’ve been bombarded with books, tapes, talks, seminars, and movies convincing us that real Christianity is all about perfection. But, is it? Join us for the conversation. The book can be purchased in the Oasis Bookstore.

Women’s Bible Study: From Aging to Saging

Leader: Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries Wednesdays, January 8-February 26, 1:15-2:15PM, Room W125 Author, Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi felt an uneasiness as he was growing older. Fears about death and infirmity were haunting him. His solution was to go on a quest to investigate how to turn aging into the most meaningful and truly

Meet Donald Miller

It’s rare that a Christian speaker is respected both inside and outside the church, but Donald Miller has been drawing diverse crowds for years. His use of disarming humor, compelling stories and authentic musings on faith help people immediately feel at home while he’s on stage. wonderful time of life. In this book, he shows us how to create an aging process characterized by adventure, passion, mystery, and fulfillment. Using brain/mind research, he gives us the means to combat the negative aspects of growing older. By harnessing the power of the spirit, he gives us ways to use our life experiences to nurture, heal, and assist the generations that follow us.

Trusting God for Everything

Leader: Mike Gentry, St. Luke’s Member Tuesdays, January 14-February 25, 7-8:30PM, Room W125 Childcare available upon request There is much in life that can cause us to be uncertain, worried, anxious, and perhaps even fearful. Concerns about the economy, employment, health, family, and relationships can keep us awake at night. Scripture, however, offers a picture of what it can look like when we trust that God cares about us and walks with us in all circumstances. Such a life of connecting with God can move us toward becoming people who live with joy and gratefulness, confidence and intention. Throughout this study of Psalm 23, grow in trust and confidence of God as we discover how God provides for our needs and restores our soul. A copy of the book, Trusting God for Everything, may be purchased in the Oasis Gift and Bookstore.

Leaders: Tony Baumgartner, St. Luke’s Member and Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries Tuesdays, January 21-February 25, 7-8:30PM, Room E105, Childcare available upon request. We all want to have a faith that matters but what does this mean? What are the life-changing beliefs and practices that help us embrace God’s love and grace, follow Christ, and live life with meaning and purpose? Through scripture, story, and conversation, explore next steps for your personal spiritual journey. The workbook, The Wesleyan Way: A Faith that Matters, will be a resource used in class and can be purchased in the Oasis Bookstore.

Why?

Leader: Jim Harenberg, St. Luke’s Member Wednesdays, January 22-February 12, 7-8:30PM, Room E213, Childcare available upon request. It’s an age-old question, one perhaps we have voiced ourselves in difficult times when answers are not satisfactory or when prayers seem to go unheard– where is God? Our generation is no different than those who have gone before us. We want to understand God’s will – for our lives, for our world – but where do we begin? Pastor and author, Adam Hamilton of the Church of the Resurrection of Leawood, Kansas, offers a resource that may help with reconciling loss, pain, and suffering with a God who loves and cares for all. Entitled, Why? Making Sense of God’s Will, Hamilton invites us to explore our assumptions, expectations, and beliefs. Join with others who seek to discover a new perspective or more satisfactory answers through prayer, Bible study, discussion and encouragement of one another. The book, Why?, can be purchased in the Oasis Bookstore.

Stepping Out in Faith

Leader: Pam Hamilton Wednesdays, January 29-February 26, 7-8:30PM, Room E212, Childcare available upon request. Unearth timeless truths by digging in to the stories of four women in Scripture, each facing a challenge relevant to a life of faith today. Learn from their life stories through the teaching, discussion and

taking on the challenge of the week! These women include the woman who was hemorrhaging, the widow of Nain, the woman at the well and Mary Magdalene when she anointed Christ. This interactive class is open to men and women. Pam Hamilton will teach based on her study and life experience which includes being a Pastor, Life Coach, Psychotherapist and mother of four.

What’s Your Spiritual Type?

Leaders: Betty Brandt, Director of the Spiritual Life Center and Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries Sunday, January 26, 11AM-Noon, Room E213 Have you ever wondered why some people feel closer to God while walking in the woods or doing something for someone else while others experience God’s closeness in the quiet after a storm or the words of a song? Corinne Ware, spiritual director and pastoral counselor, has developed a tool that provides a framework for individuals to name and understand our preferred spiritual pathway. Discover your preferred pathway and learn about the others that you may choose to use from time to time.

Exploring Membership Class

Leaders: Rev. Rob Fuquay, staff, and lay leaders Sunday, February 9, Noon – 3PM, The Lodge Childcare available upon request. Join Pastor Rob Fuquay and others for a time of getting acquainted with one another, learning the vision and values of St. Luke’s, a brief overview of the history of the church, and a bit about United Methodism. Discuss what it means to be a member of St. Luke’s as we look closely at what it means to Seek, Celebrate, Live, and Share the love of God for all creation. Everyone will have an opportunity to sign up for future classes, serving opportunities within the church and outreach events. You may choose to join St. Luke’s after this class if you desire.

Discover Your God-Given Gifts

Leaders: Berneta Sherck, St. Luke’s Member and Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries Mondays, February 3 and 10, 7-8:30PM, Room E212, Childcare available upon request. Each of us has been given gifts and talents to be used in ways that can enhance the ministry of the church. January brings some of our favorite stories to tell preschoolers. They’re stories filled with awe and wonder. They’re the stories that make us say, “Hmm, Jesus really can do anything!” Filling empty nets with fish, feeding five thousand with just a few fishes and loaves. Wow! It’s amazing what Jesus did. He walked on the water. He calmed a storm with just a word. Jesus can do anything!

January at the Track

Knowledge is discovering something new so you can be better at whatever you do. We believe that God’s Word is the best place to discover something new about our world and ultimately ourselves. And when we put those discoveries into practice it changes us from the inside out and impacts the choices we make and the way we live. God is the source of all truth. We need to dig into His Word and discover that truth for ourselves.

Preschool Children’s Choir

Genesis is a music program for children ages 3 ½ to 5 years (and not in Kindergarten). Children in this group meet each Sunday, 8:50-9:20AM, in E208, where they learn basic music concepts through music activities including movement, playing rhythm instruments, music games, and singing traditional and sacred songs. St. Luke’s youngest musicians will sing for the first time in the Sanctuary on a Sunday morning worship service in December. Consider enrolling your child in the program where they can not only learn to enjoy music, but also to offer the gift of music to the congregation. Everyone will be blessed! Classes (9AM-1PM) for three- to five-year-olds are offered in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. All teachers are experienced, qualified, well-trained and strive to maintain strong

Parents’ Day Out

Classes (9AM-1PM) are offered for children ages 10 months to three years. PDO was established to provide parents of young children time for themselves on a regular basis. Children must be 10 months by 9/1/2014 to enroll for the 2014-2015 school year.

We need extra hands to help families with children navigate our church building – to greet new families with a warm smile, to help them register their children for the first time, and to guide them to their new classrooms. If you would like to be one of these important people who make a difference for new families at St. Luke’s, please contact Heather Hilbert at hilberth@ stlukesumc.com. Thank you for your service!

Mary Magdalene

United Methodist Women’s Breakfast

Mary Magdalene Circle will meet in room in the Parlor on Wednesday, January 9 at 6:30-8PM. A light snack is served with every meeting. St. Luke’s own Amy Barnes will be presenting Seven Tips to Discover your Passion. What would you do if you knew you could not fail? More than any other question, I am asked, “How do I discover my passion?” Many of us have spent our lives pleasing others or doing what others expect of us. I think that inside each of us is buried treasure. The treasures are our unique gifts, talents and passions which allow us each to live lives full of meaning and purpose. All we need is the clarity to discover our passion and the confidence and courage to transform us and allow us to use that passion every day in our lives. We will also have a devotion and short meeting. Mary Magdalene Circle membership is open to all women of St. Luke’s. If you have any questions, please contact co-chairs Jolynne Wilhoit at 4032462, wilhoitj@businessfurnitureindy.com or Lori Chambers 696-5965 or lochambers@sbcglobal.net.

Outreach Ministries LOCAL service opportunities

Outreach, Inc.

Reliable and efficient transportation is a major barrier for the youth of Outreach, Inc. It is not uncommon for youth to spend three or more hours a day on foot in order to attend school, make provider appointments, or get to and from work. Many walk 45 minutes or more to get to the Outreach Drop-In Center. Providing bus passes for youth is one way to help keep medical, mental health, housing and other appointments. Also, youth engaged in full-time work or school consistently voice the need for a driver’s license. For more information on Outreach, Inc. volunteering, contact Jackie Reed at 332-6550 or jsrmolar@sbcglobal.net. Here are a few specific ways to help youth with transportation needs: • Purchase IndyGo one-day ($4) bus passes. Please mail passes (or checks with “bus pass” in the memo line) to P.O. Box 11416, Indianapolis, IN 46201, or deliver to Outreach:

2822 E. New York St., Indpls., 46201. Volunteer to help youth earn driving time. Volunteers are required to use their own car. Volunteer to help during Admin Drop on Wednesdays, 10:45AM-2PM. Volunteers help youth complete necessary paperwork and drive them to appointments at the Social Security Office, Dept. of Health, BMV, etc.

We are expecting 150 people each week and will need plenty of volunteer servants to pull this off!! January 2014 December 2013 Communion

Elementary/St. Luke’s Partnership is continuing its mission of introducing young English language learners to the joy of reading and we need your help. There are opportunities for in-class tutoring practically any time during any school day, tutoring in the After School Achievers program (2:30-6PM, M-Th), and a new emphasis on providing mentors (especially men) to have lunch with kids who don’t often experience conversing with adults during meal time. It takes as little as one lunch hour a week to make a difference to a child learning to appreciate the wonderful world of reading. Please contact Tom Lange at tom.c.lange@gmail.com or 251-2274 if you are interested.

The tour group will visit Birmingham and tour The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. The Institute’s 12 galleries tell the heroic story of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950’s and 60’s of how ordinary people overcame centuries old bigotry and racism. Across the avenue from the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute stands the city’s most famous Civil Rights Landmark, Sixteenth Street Baptist Church where on Sunday morning September 15, 1963, Ku Klux Klansmen bombed the church, killing four little girls preparing for morning worship. The next stop on the tour is historic Selma, home to Brown Chapel AME Church, where Martin Luther King, Jr. launched the Voting Rights March. Finally, the tour will go to Montgomery and travel over the Edmund Pettus Bridge where law enforcement personnel confronted voting rights marchers. The demonstration and the subsequent struggle known as Bloody Sunday eventually led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The Rosa Parks Museum is also located in Montgomery where you can visit and exhibit to feel what it was like to be arrested for not moving to the back of the bus. The Bus Tour is $450 and includes transportation, hotel accommodations, Museum admissions and one dinner. If you would like more information please contact Bob Zehr at rdzehr@oakhillmansion.

may have similar grief issues as women. However, sometimes that embedded message of, “real men don’t cry,” discourages opportunities for processing and healing with the support of others. This men’s group will meet for fellowship and support and to allow a safe and confidential place to “say it all” with other men who mutually understand this complex journey. “REAL MEN” do cry and also “REAL MEN” laugh and even drink coffee together!
