Is our welcome vine-ripened? Really? It’s summer – the season of fresh tomatoes from my garden. I have been known
to snag a sun-warm tomato right off the vine, wipe the dust on my shirt, and eat it apple style. Marvelously messy. So, I have low tolerance for so-called “vine-ripe tomatoes” one finds in a grocery store. You might guess Barbara Brown Taylor communicates to every cell in my body with this quote: Every time I pass a church with a sign out front that says, “Our doors and hearts are open to everyone,” I think “vine-ripe tomatoes.” Once you have bitten into a mealy, pale pink tomato it is hard to forgive the sign that said, “vine ripe”.... The problem is the discrepancy between the words and the reality. –When God Is Silent
At St. Luke’s we say, “We are an Open Community of Christians...” Those are dangerous words. The minute we promote ourselves this way and then fail to live up to our intention, it’s hard for a hapless guest to forgive the sign (and the people who put it there). They walk in anticipating a rare treat, and instead find a mealy-palepink-tomato-kind of welcome. It’s there in the you-are-sitting-in-my-pew-look, or the can’t-you-control-your-children glare. No amount of marketing can fix this. The good news is, when we deliver on our claim to be Open, then we give our guests an experience akin to that fresh tomato treat I am going to have in a few weeks in my garden. For example: One of the St. Luke’s parking lot ushers greeted a little guest walking out to his car with his mom. The little guy had a great experience in his morning classes. This simple gesture left him beaming even brighter. When they reached the car, his mom strapped him in to the car seat. He grinned at her and said, “Don’t you just love this place?” Taste and see,

We will have groups several days and evenings each week, and on Sunday mornings. The list of classes, times and locations will be ready for registration Aug. 1. Frequently Asked Questions
What is Disciple Bible Study? A great, fun way to grow in your faith, meet new friends and learn more about the Bible. What is Disciple Fast Track? Disciple I Fast Track: Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study is a life-transforming 24-week, 75-minute class that offers an overview of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. All four levels of Disciple are offered in the Fast Track version. Where do I start? Participants take Disciple I as a prerequisite to the other three studies. After Disciple I, the other levels may be taken in any order. What is my commitment if I take the Fast Track? Besides 12 classes in Fall and 12 in Winter, the class requires a commitment to 20-30 minutes of daily reading. No previous Bible knowledge is necessary. You will read 60% of the Bible. At the end of this
class you will know Bible basics from beginning to end, have new friends and no doubt, will grow stronger in your own faith. A study manual and study Bible are needed.
What is Disciple I Fast Track online? This class is a synchronous online class with the same group of eight people meeting together at the same time, similar to Google Hangout. What do you study in the other three levels? Disciple II - Into the Word Into the World The class covers Genesis, Exodus, Luke, and Acts. Disciple III - Remember Who You Are The class covers the Prophets & Paul’s Letters. Disciple IV - Under the Tree of Life This class covers the writings in the Old Testament (Ruth, I and II Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Lamentations and Daniel). New Testament scripture includes John, I John, II John, III John, James, Jude and Revelation. What motivates people to take this series? Some students have read the Bible, but haven’t really studied it. There’s a difference. Others find the Bible confusing and overwhelming to read on their own. Other’s haven’t read scripture since elementary school. Still others join the class as a way to connect with new friends in a conversation that has some substance. What do folks say after they’ve had the class? Here’s one testimony to the value of the class: “I took Disciple because I knew I did not know much about the Bible. I knew only familiar stories and scriptures. I really wanted to be able to say, ‘I have read the Bible!’ I feel so blessed now after finishing Disciple I. I understand the stories in the scriptures and how they all fit together. I get so much more out of the sermon and songs in

Children’s Ministries Sunday Morning Options:
this summer to memorize each one.
Preschool at 9:15 & 10:45
Our theme verse for July is Proverbs 17:17, NIrV. “A friend loves at all times. He is there to help when trouble comes.” This verse is a great reminder that friends aren’t just there for each other when everything is going well. They also are there to help when life is hard.
Our Clubhouse Pirate Adventure continues! This month as we continue to find treasures in the Bible, our preschoolers will learn they can talk to God any time, that God wants them to share their stuff, and that Jesus wants to be their friend forever. The final week of our adventure is review week, where they can fill out their own pirate map with all the symbols they’ve discovered along the way. Our memory verse this summer is “Your teachings are worth more to me than thousands of pieces of gold and silver,” Psalm 119:72.
Elementary at 9:15 & 10:45
Over the past school year, we’ve enjoyed taking kids through God’s one big story. We’ve traveled through the Bible covering the familiar stories of Abraham and Joseph, Moses and King David. We made it all the way to Jesus, Paul, and the start of the early church.

Two Exciting Summer Opportunities
As the church started, no longer were there just a handful of disciples. These were growing congregations filled with people from all walks of life. They didn’t always get along either. Sure, every so often, they got it right and there were glimpses of greatness. But they disagreed and argued. They had a hard time forgiving and accepting each other. At times, they even found it difficult to keep worshiping together. Several of the apostles began writing to these believers, instructing them how to practice getting along and living in harmony with one another. These writings are not presented in the form of a story. They are letters and sermons, delivered by people and for people. They’re historic, but they’re not really a story. This summer may feel a little different, but it’s amazing to read these letters from real people to real people. To help illustrate these important truths, we’ve wrapped them in a summer-long story about friendship. We’re continuing in July looking at what the New Testament letters have to say about friendship. Friendship is treating others the way you want to be treated. Each week, we continue looking at a “one another” principle that gives us a framework for loving others the way God loved us. Because these are short verses, we suggest that you take

Summer Splash and SpringHill Day Camp will host 52 scholarship kids this summer for these two notto-be-missed adventures for children. That means we’ll need drivers to pick up the children at their homes and deliver them to and from camp (at St. Luke’s). We also need help in making lunches for the children each day. Summer camps run July 7-11 and again July 21-15. Make an impact in the life of one of our Washington Township neighbors. Contact Sarah Smith at sarah.gamber@gmail.com.
Commission on Children’s Ministries
This leadership team works closely with staff to dream and implement new opportunities for fellowship, hospitality, missions and parent/ volunteer support. We’re always looking for more leaders to come beside us and take Children’s Ministries to the next level. The commission meets monthly to cast vision, fellowship with one another and plan for upcoming events. For more information on this diverse, supportive leadership team, contact Heather Hilbert at hilberth@ stlukesumc.com.
Hospitality Volunteers
We need extra hands to help families with children navigate our church building – to greet new families with a warm smile, to help them register their children for the first time and to guide them to their new classrooms. To be one of these important people, please contact Heather Hilbert at hilberth@stlukesumc.com.
Preschool & PDO St. Luke’s is unique among Indianapolis area programs. We provide an opportunity for children of all ability levels to relate socially to each other, learn from each other and play together. In addition to skill development, our philosophy is that the tolerance and acceptance of people with differences begins at an early age. This is a special opportunity to develop the foundation for Christian attitudes towards individual differences throughout the child’s life. If you have further questions or would like to schedule a tour, please call the Preschool Office at 844-3399. We look forward to another fabulous year as we continue to grow!
Preschool
Classes (9AM-1PM) for three- to five-year-olds are offered in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. All teachers are experienced, qualified, well-trained and strive to maintain strong relationships with the children and their families. Preschool offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum where children may grow socially, creatively, emotionally, cognitively and physically. Children must be three years old by 9/1/2014 to enroll for the 2014-2015 school year.
Parents’ Day Out
Classes (9AM-1PM) are offered for children ages 10 months to three years. PDO was established to provide parents of young children time for themselves on a regular basis. Children participate in structured play in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. Opportunities are provided for children to learn beginning social skills while having fun. Children must be 10 months old by 9/1/2014 to enroll for the 2014-2015 school year.

New Caregiver Support Group
Aug. 19 (Third Tuesdays of the month), 6:30-8PM Main Office Conference Room Feeling squeezed by your responsibility to maturing children and aging parents? Since 2006, the term “sandwich generation” appeared as a new entry in the Oxford English and Merriam Webster dictionaries. There are no rehearsals for this new role in which many find themselves caring for aging parents just as they prepare to be empty nesters. In her book Stitches, Anne Lamott writes: “... in the cold wind, if you can lean against others, none of you will blow away. You keep each other from falling or help each other get back up. Someone holds out a hand ... or you may hold out a hand, and a person in need reaches for it and hangs on.” On August 19 a new support group for those caring for loved ones will meet (and the third Tuesday of each month after that) in the Main Office Conference Room. Contact Tina Voelker (dtsnag@ sbcglobal.net) or Leanne Jackson (LRJackson57@ gmail.com) for more information.

Back-to-School Extravaganza Sunday, Aug. 3 • 2-5PM • St. Luke’s
Children get a huge boost to their self-esteem when arriving at school the first day with a backpack full of supplies, new shoes and a new haircut. Our goal is to provide a one-stop-shop where families can find many of the items they need to get the school year off to a great start. Last year we had a huge turnout for our inaugural event with more than 750 students in attendance. We anticipate serving 1,000 students this year. Donations Needed In order to provide the school supplies to over 1,000 children we need the support of our church family. We estimate that it will cost $20 per child to provide a backpack and all necessary school supplies. You can sponsor a child by providing a monetary donation of $20 or by shopping for school supplies for a student in need. Donations can be made via the website or in person at the Outreach Post in the West Passage on Sundays. A shopping list for the school may also be picked up at the Outreach Post or online. Volunteer Opportunities Volunteers are crucial to make the Backto-School Extravaganza a success. Last year we were truly overwhelmed by our church family’s support. The families in attendance felt welcomed by all the volunteers, who were easily identified in the red shirts they wore. Volunteers will be needed on the day of the event on Aug. 3, as well as on
Servant Day, Aug. 2, to set up for the event. If you are interested in volunteering please stop by the Outreach Post or sign up on the St. Luke’s webpage at www.stlukesumc.com/outreach. Sponsorship Opportunities This year we are excited to announce that we have partnered with many organizations within the surrounding community to provide needed items such as clothing, books, new shoes, food and entertainment. These include the United Methodist Women, Second Presbyterian Church, Union Chapel United Methodist Church, Northminster Presbyterian Church, and Jordan YMCA. These organizations have the same goals to serve the children of Washington Township. They will provide both monetary support and volunteers to ensure that this event is a huge success. If you or your organization is interested in sponsorship opportunities please contact Buffy Perkins at buffyaperkins@sbcglobal.net for more information. The Back-to-School Extravaganza seeks to create a relationship with families who walk through our doors. Many of the families who attended our inaugural event also attended our Fall Festival, Thanksgiving meal, Summer Camps, and are currently participating in our English as a New Language class. We plan to continue all of these opportunities again this year. Our hope is to develop relationships with our neighbors and impact their lives.
St. Luke’s has a strong tradition of being an outwardly focused church. Throughout our 60-year history, many of our community and world mission efforts have impacted people and changed lives. Outreach Ministries continues to be an integral part of the St. Luke’s vision. We look forward to strengthening our relationship with current organizations associated with St. Luke’s, as well as creating new partnerships. In doing so, we will fulfill our ultimate mission to find and give hope to others. With your input and suggestions, the Outreach Commission has selected a number of service organizations that are a good fit for St. Luke’s. We are covenanting with these organizations as part of our mission strategy to serve neighbors near and far. For details on these partners, please find the flyer called, “Reaching Out In Partnership.” Please direct any questions to Julie Hunt (jhunt824@yahoo.com) or David Gard (davidgard104@aol.com). Julie and David serve as the Co-Directors of Outreach Partnerships. We look forward to learning more about the exciting work currently being done by our active members all across our local and global community.

W
hen St. Luke’s leaders set out in 2013 to craft a vision for the next five years for this congregation, they got an unexpected boost from an event that inspired and better equipped them to lead the process: the Global Leadership Summit. As a result, this year, they hope to double enrollment of participants from St. Luke’s. Mark and Judi Hosfeld are leading a charge to sign up 200 leaders this year for the Global Leadership Summit, 8:30AM-5:30PM, Aug. 14-15, Grace Church, Noblesville, IN. (A $250 value, St. Luke’s guests can register for $129). The Global Leadership Summit is a two-day, worldclass leadership event experienced by more than 170,000 leaders around the world, representing more than 14,000 churches. It’s telecast live from Willow Creek’s campus (near Chicago) every August. This event is crafted to infuse vision, skill development and inspiration for leaders for the transformation of local congregations. “I remember the first morning being blown away by the speakers and knowing I can improve my own leadership capabilities from every one of these speakers,” said Tom Lange, St. Luke’s volunteer representative to Fox Hill Elementary outreach efforts. A Kenyan clergyman, who described a leadership practice called “viral leadership,” told the participants
that he surrounded himself with emerging leaders, who were then exposed first-hand to his vision— and learning how to implement it “on the job.” Lange came back from the event and adapted his own leadership style in his work at Eli Lilly & Co., until his retirement. “Now I’m using what I learned in volunteer capacities,” he said. “I have to say how empowered I felt when it was over,” said Jilliane Pruiett, systems administrator at St. Luke’s, who came home and enrolled in a Master’s program to study organizational development, even as she continues her position at St. Luke’s. Rob Wineland, CEO of a local company, came back from the event and trained his staff on some of the leadership techniques he learned for businesses. He plans to bring his leadership team to this year’s summit. The opportunity to learn leadership skills in a faithbased context appeals to the Hosfelds who will attend for the first time this year. Registration includes all conference materials and break refreshments. Hosfelds will invite the entire group of participants from St. Luke’s to a pre-event gathering on what to expect and a post-event gathering to strategize on how to apply what is learned at St. Luke’s. For more information and to obtain the St. Luke’s discount code, contact Marsha Thompson, 846-3404, x304, or thompsonm@ stlukesumc.com.
