Opportunities to Seek

Sunday, March 15, 2015 8, 9:15 & 10:45AM Sermon: Getting Strength for the Long Haul Scripture: Matthew 17: 1-13 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.” And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, “Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.” And the disciples asked him, “Why, then, do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” He replied, “Elijah is indeed coming and will restore all things; but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but they did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man is about to suffer at their hands.” Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them about John the Baptist.

WELCOME and PRAYER OF CONFESSION Rev. David Williamson Gracious God, we confess that we often lose sight of the hope we have in you. Our failures and our self-doubts preoccupy our thoughts and paralyze us from your work. We feel at times intimidated and useless in making a difference in the world. We pray for your forgiveness and we ask for your help so that we might be steadfast and faithful to you. Help us focus on what you have given us in Jesus, as we continue to pray … (Silence) * WORDS OF ASSURANCE and PASSING OF THE PEACE * HYMN

“Transfiguration Hymn” Sung to CWM RHONDDA (“Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah”)

Leader: Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is the one truth church, apostolic and universal, whose holy faith let us now declare: All: We believe in the one God, maker and ruler of all things, the source of all goodness and beauty, all truth and love. We believe in Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, our teacher, example, and Redeemer, the Savior of the world. We believe in the Holy Spirit, God present with us for guidance, for comfort, and for strength. We believe in the forgiveness of sins, in the life of love and prayer, and in grace equal to every need. We believe in the Word of God contained in the Old and New Testaments as the sufficient rule both of faith and of practice. We believe in the Church as the fellowship, for worship and for service, of all who are united to the living Lord. We believe in the kingdom of God as the divine rule in human society, in the final triumph of righteousness, and in the life everlasting. Amen.
