entry.point The Mansion at Oak Hill with Rev. Stan Abell 10:30AM every Sunday Entry.point church is an open faith community where people of diverse backgrounds and life experiences will find a safe and creative space to explore and deepen their individual faith journeys. The worship style at entry.point is characterized by creative use of multi-media—music, video and spoken word. The casual services are 45 minutes and are crafted to engage relevant life questions. Entry.point kid’s programming is originally created and corresponds with the main service so that families can have faith conversations appropriate for all levels of understanding.

St. Luke’s hopes to have 100 small groups totaling more than 1,000 people meeting in homes, restaurants, work places, at the church, online, and at retirement centers during Lent. Groups are available every day of the week, morning, noon and night!

These groups will be reflecting on the Sunday sermon series: Racing Through Life.

Here’s how it works: On Ash Wednesday, March 5, we will all meet for an Ash Wednesday Service at St. Luke’s. After the service you will meet your host and the others in the group.

Then you will attend your small group for the next five weeks (March 9-April 12). Most groups will meet for 1-1/2 hours. Each week you will get to know your group better, discuss your thoughts from the sermon the Sunday before (a discussion guide is provided) and enjoy refreshments together. There is no homework!

(If you have to miss worship you can watch the sermon online before you come.) The experience will conclude with a wonderful Palm Sunday morning (April 13) experience in worship, followed by Holy Week, which has many options for your group to try together if possible. We will all conclude the season with a glorious Easter Sunday morning.

Join us for the first contemporary worship service in St. Luke’s sanctuary. After the service, meet in the Great Hall for a free lunch and fellowship from 12-1PM. Why Our Children’s Ministry Leaders Wear Orange

Leaders: Amy and Jake Nichols, St. Luke’s Members and Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries Sundays, March 23, 30, April 6 and 13, 9:15-10:15AM, Room N101-102 Orange is a popular color within our Children’s Ministry. It highlights a significant belief we hold with regard to the relationship of the church as we support parents and other key family members who carry the responsibility of raising children. In this parent orientation, learn what Orange means and the teaching implications it carries for pre-school, elementary, and student ministries. Additionally, parents will be introduced to a four-window model created to guide you through core principles necessary to encourage children in their growth, development, and self-understanding. The book we will reference is Kidunique: Helping Kids Discover Who They Are by Dan Webster, author, teacher, mentor, and founder of Authentic Leadership, Inc.

Conversations on Homosexuality and Christianity

6-Week Series “This I Know” A Companion to “For the Bible Tells Me So” Sundays Starting March 9: 9:15-10:15AM, Parlor On Saturday, March 8 we will be holding a special dinner and movie event to view “For the Bible Tells Me So.” Everyone is welcome for the movie and our class. The movie showcases several Christian families and their journey with their gay or lesbian child. Looking at what the Bible says about

homosexuality, the viewer gets the opportunity to explore new thoughts, to hear genuine feelings and fears expressed both by the children and their parents, and well-known theologians’ opinions.

Dinner starts at 6:30, with the movie showing at 7pm. $5 or a donation to St. Luke’s ReachOut group will cover the cost of the dinner. Pre-registration helpful for planning on www.stlukesumc.com and search by the title of the movie. Starting March 9, we will hold a companion 6-week class series called “This I Know.” It is based on “For the Bible Tells Me So.”

Exploring Membership Class

Just Three Days Will Change Your Life Plan to Attend The Walk to Emmaus or The Great Banquet These are three-day life-changing retreats that cover the basics of Christianity. Both are an opportunity to grow in your faith in a powerful way. The Walk to Emmaus is the United Methodist retreat and The Great Banquet is the Presbyterian title of the same event. You will enjoy singing, learning, laughing, worshiping, reflecting, praying and participating in small group discussions. The theme is God’s grace, how that grace comes alive in the Christian community and how it is expressed in the world.

Walk to Emmaus Dates: The Men’s retreat is March 6-9 and the Women’s retreat is March 13-16.

Both are held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Discipleship Invitation to the New Testament

Cultural Literacy for Religion: Everything the Well-Educated Person Should Know

Sundays, 11AM-Noon, Spritual Life Center.

No registration, fee: $10 A recent poll of Americans revealed an alarming lack of basic knowledge about the world’s religions.

The vast majority of Americans cannot name the four Noble Truths of Buddhism or the five Pillars of Islam. Most do not know what Ramadan is or when the Jewish Sabbath begins. Only about half of American adults can name one of the four Gospels of the New Testament. This course is designed to teach you the basics of world religions – their origins, historical figures, rituals, scriptures, holidays and key teachings. DVD series with discussion hosted by the New Perspectives class. Come for one session or entire series. March subjects are Christianity and Islam.

LENTEN OPPORTUNITIES

“Lay Your Burden Down” Open Labyrinth Walk

Practice repentance by walking the outdoor daylily labyrinth or the canvas labyrinth in Fellowship Hall on Friday, April 11 and contemplate the burdens you are carrying. Pick up a stone at the entrance to the labyrinth to symbolize your burdens. As you walk towards the center, consider letting go of those burdens, repenting and seeking forgiveness.

In the center lay your “burden” down. Walk the path out of the labyrinth claiming your forgiveness and rejoicing. The outdoor labyrinth can be found by going around Luke’s Lodge in the NE corner of the campus, down the steps and across the little bridge into the neighborhood to the north of St. Luke’s The entrance is marked. The indoor canvas labyrinth will be available 10am-7pm, Fellowship Hall. Written materials available.

Stations of the Cross in Robertson Chapel

If you have been to Jerusalem’s Old City, you have probably walked the path that Jesus walked on what we now call Holy Thursday and Good Friday. The Catholic Church has taken that journey and created Stations of the Cross. Each Station represents an event in Jesus’ journey to the cross.

The Spiritual Life Center invites you to travel that path with the help of images of Jesus’ journey and a devotional guide to more fully experience the final days of Holy Week. Healing Partners - Pilgrimage Healing Process Training

If you feel called to bring the healing power of God’s love to others, you may be interested in joining our St. Luke’s Healing Ministry. You can be trained in this hands-on-healing modality on Saturday, April 12, 8:30am-4pm, Spiritual Life Center. The training includes background of the Pilgrimage Healing Process, learning the steps, being both receiver and giver and a discussion of your role as healer. Registration required. Musical Psalms and Prayers for Lent

Sunday, March 23, 3:00PM, Sanctuary St. Luke’s Chancel Choir, Children’s Choir and Orchestra will present an afternoon concert on Sunday, March 23 (3 pm) featuring music of reflective beauty and stirring spirit of the season of Lent. The program is free and open to the public; a free-will offering will be received. “We’re excited to present, for the first time in this area, Dan Forrest’s beautiful new work ‘Requiem for the Living’ – a piece of exquisite beauty and dramatic range,” said Mark Squire, Director of Worship & the Arts.

“The Chancel Choir has sung several pieces by Dan in recent years at St. Luke’s, and his compositions are always moving and satisfying. The ‘Requiem for the Living’ draws together liturgical and scriptural texts, all set to beautiful, lush music for choir, children & orchestra.” The program will also include the settings of “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” by Mack Wilberg, “Stay With Us” by Egil Hovland, “Our Father” by Frank Martin, and “Psalom” by Arvo Part written for the orchestra’s strings. Two of the pieces (Hovland & Martin) are excerpts from larger oratorios, which, because of their music scale and scope, are rarely performed.

The Lenten concert is a wonderful opportunity to hear short excerpts from these sacred masterworks. The program draws together themes and scriptures familiar to many listeners – the hymnody of Charles Wesley, the Lord’s Prayer, as well as passages from the Psalms, Ecclesiastes, Job, Matthew and Acts.

“The program by the choirs and orchestra will draw our audience into an environment of beauty & reflection – a musical Sanctuary – during this season of Lent,” continued Squire, “From human despair to sublime beauty – all leading through to the light of God’s love in Christ, we are looking forward to sharing this gift to our church and community!”

Musical Theater Summer Camp

The St. Luke’s UMC Arts Academy is offering a musical theater summer camp June 23-27, performing “We Can Make a Difference.” This wonderful opportunity for fun, fellowship, and musical theater is offered for children going into grades 3 through 5. Campers will learn several musical numbers, a bit of choreography, general performance skills, and discuss the benefits of learning to work in a group toward a common goal.

Chancel Choir Patron’s Fund

Our Chancel Choir’s ministry is supplemented by a Patron’s Fund by which they can take on projects and possibilities far outside the realm of their annual budget; such as underwriting for performances (including the annual Christmas Concerts), concert tours, as well as new music, vestments and attire. Patron’s receive a performance of new music as well as a permanent plaque bearing the patron’s name and a dedicatory designation. Patron levels are established at $750 & $1,000. Children’s Music Ministries Rehearsal schedule – 2014

(All rehearsals are in E208 and/or E207, 2nd floor)

Genesis

Rehearses Sundays, 8:50-9:20AM Ages 3 ½ -5. Music activities include movement, playing rhythm instruments and singing sacred songs. The youngest group of musicians sings two to three per season in the Sanctuary, participates on Christmas Eve, and leads music for the Mini-Track preschool worship service.

Elementary Music Program

Rehearses Sundays, 10:25-11:15AM Grades K-5 (Young musicians are divided into two groups: K-2 and 3-5). Music activities include singing, movement and an instrumental program: Orff instruments, Boomwhackers and choir chimes.

This group of musicians sings regularly in the Sanctuary throughout the season and participates at the 3PM Christmas Eve Service. Older singers, Grades 3-5, sing in the Annual Christmas Candlelight Concert with the St. Luke’s Chancel Choir and Orchestra.

Middle School Choir

Rehearses Tuesdays, 7:15-8PM Grades 6-8. An outstanding group of youth singers who participate regularly in worship services and concerts in the St. Luke’s Sanctuary.

The Choristers

Rehearses Tuesdays, 6:15-7:15PM Grades 3-8 (treble voices) This group of musicians makes a strong commitment to attending rehearsals and to singing more advanced music in the Sanctuary worship services and sings at the Annual Christmas Candlelight Concert with the St. Luke’s Chancel Choir and Orchestra. Attendance at Voice for Life is strongly encouraged in order to make progress and contribute to the group.

Voice for Life

Meets Tuesdays, 5:45-6:15PM A nationally recognized program of instruction for music theory, ear training, music history, church history, hymnology, and overall musical training.

Participants can earn RSCM ribbons and medals.

The program is open to any singer who participates in the Tuesday evening program – Middle School Singers and The Choristers.

Handbell Choirs

Meets Sundays, 11:15AM-Noon Grades 3-8. Members will learn the basic fundamentals of English handbell ringing along with note and rhythm reading. Please contact Miss Deb for information.

Forgiveness is deciding that someone who has wronged you doesn’t have to pay.When we choose to forgive others, it’s a response to the great love and forgiveness God has shown us. Forgiveness means letting go of what someone did to us in order to restore the relationship.

Mini Track

Sometimes it’s hard to believe that Jesus, the Son of God, walked around here on the same earth that you and I now inhabit. We want our preschoolers to feel that same amazement, that wonder and awe, that only Jesus can bring. Jesus came to do amazing things, and He did them. They’ll hear about how the people in the temple were amazed by the questions a 12-year-old boy was asking.

They’ll here of the awesome experience that was Jesus’ baptism when God spoke from the heavens.

They’ll watch in awe as Jesus turns water to “super fancy drink” at a wedding.

In addition, our preschoolers will learn that Jesus invited some special friends to go on His amazing journey with Him. They’ll hear how these men left their jobs to follow their savior and watch Him do amazing things. Finally, they will learn that Jesus taught us how to pray. We can talk to our Father in heaven any time, anywhere, about anything. Now, that IS amazing.

But forgiveness isn’t always a simple exchange.

What if the person never apologizes? Forgive anyway. What if the person does it again? Forgive again. What if the person never changes? Keep on forgiving. By controlling how you respond and making an alternate choice to forgive, you can delete the impact of what that person did to you.

The monthly memory verse is: “Forgive the things you are holding against one another. Forgive, just as the Lord forgave you,” Colossians 3:13, NIrV. Through God’s forgiveness, we are inspired to love, serve, and give to others.

For the convenience of new mothers in our congregation, we have a nursing room, located off the East Passage, in room E126. It can be accessed directly from the East Passage or through the childcare nursery room it adjoins. The room is equipped with rocking chairs and a television livestreaming the worship service in the Sanctuary. It is open to all who need it on Sunday mornings. Please ask an usher if you need assistance locating it.

Preschool Children’s Choir

Genesis is a music program for children ages 3 ½ to 5 years (and not in Kindergarten). Children in this group meet each Sunday, 8:50-9:20AM, in E208, where they learn basic music concepts through music activities including movement, playing

St. Luke’s is unique to other Indianapolis area programs. We provide an opportunity for children of all ability levels to relate socially to each other, learn from each other, and play together. In addition to skill development, our philosophy is that the tolerance and acceptance of people with differences begins at an early age. This is a special opportunity to develop the foundation for Christian attitudes towards individual differences throughout the child’s life.

Preschool

Classes (9AM-1PM) for three- to five-year-olds are offered in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. All teachers are experienced, qualified, well-trained and strive to maintain strong relationships with the children and their families.

Preschool offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum where children may grow socially, creatively, emotionally, cognitively and physically.

Children must be 3 years old by 9/1/2014 to enroll for the 2014-2015 school year.

Parents’ Day Out

Classes (9AM-1PM) are offered for children ages 10 months to three years. PDO was established to provide parents of young children time for themselves on a regular basis. Children participate in structured play in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. Opportunities are provided for children to learn beginning social skills while having fun. Children must be 10 months by 9/1/2014 to enroll for the 2014-2015 school year.

High School Youth Group

9:30-10:30AM at the Lodge High school youth group meets on Sunday mornings in the Lodge for student led worship, a brief message, small group breakouts, experiential learning, and time for hanging out with friends.

Whether you’re already plugged in or new to high school youth activities, this is the place to plug in!

Sunday mornings are low on pressure and high on connecting. We are learning more about the personalities and characters in the New Testament.

All high school youth and their friends are welcome!

6-7:30PM at the Lodge and the Gym Jr. High youth group meets at the Lodge on Sunday nights at 6PM. Some students will choose gym activities, while other students will choose to stay at the Lodge for board games and connection time.

Following this time we will bring students together for an ice breaker, and then move to the Lodge for Faith Questions. Sunday nights will work like “overtime” from Sunday morning. Questions about faith, about the Bible, life, and lessons that we are learning in the morning will be addressed in the evening. Invite friends, and look out for some fun activities!

High School Small Groups

6-7:30PM at the Lodge We encourage all high school students to get plugged in with a weekly small groups. This is a great way for students to get to know each other, have a place of respite during busy weeks, and grow deeper in their faith alongside peers. Sunday nights we have a girls’ small group, a guys’ small group, and an upperclassmen co-ed small group.

Wednesday Guys’ Small Group

We also have a guys small group on Wednesdays from 6-7PM at Buffalo Wild Wings at 2510 East 146th Street Carmel, IN 46033. This group offers a welcoming atmosphere for guys to enjoy wings, conversations about sports, life and God! Please contact Kevin Davis if you would like to get plugged in or find out more! Young Adult Ministries There are many ways to get involved with our young adult group – spiritually, socially and serviceoriented. Our fellowship nights are designed to get you out of your house and engaged with other young adults. We take in concerts, dinners, movies, bowling, putt-putt, local one-time gigs and much more. Get connected with others through small group experiences and social activities, as well as use your gifts and talents to make a difference in the lives of others.

Outreach, Inc. Race Against Hunger

Sunday, March 30, 9AM-1PM, Great Hall Do you want to “Help Bag Hunger?” St. Luke’s UMC Outreach and Kids Against Hunger will partner to help prepare 40,000 meals which is DOUBLE the amount we packaged in 2013! Kids Against Hunger is a non-profit that works to find volunteers who pack highly nutritious, life-saving meals for malnourished and hungry children and their families in Indiana and abroad.

Reliable and efficient transportation is a major barrier for the youth of Outreach, Inc. It is not uncommon for youth to spend three or more hours a day on foot in order to attend school, make provider appointments, or get to and from work. Many walk 45 minutes or more to get to the Outreach Drop-In Center. Providing bus passes for youth is one way to help keep medical, mental health, housing and other appointments.

Also, youth engaged in full-time work or school consistently voice the need for a driver’s license. For more information on Outreach, Inc.

Habitat for Humanity Greater Indianapolis and St. Luke’s UMC Partnership Two weekends: March 7/8 and March 14/15, 8AM-2:30PM, 3668 Rock Maple Dr., Indianapolis, IN 46235 Stephanie Eppert was just months away from breaking ground on her Habitat for Humanity home last May when the condo she was renting caught fire. Stephanie had three children and two of the children did not survive the fire. Stephanie was critically injured and spent about a month at Wishard. She is still recovering both emotionally and physically. Stephanie is in an apartment now and her lease is up at the end of March.

Habitat for Humanity Greater Indianapolis and St. Luke’s will partner to rehab the home. The home is on the east side of town near her family.

When Habitat received it, it had a hole in the roof and they had to mitigate a mold problem.

We will be partnering to paint, clean, replace fixtures and help with other interior projects on March 7,8,14 and 15 from 8AM-2:30PM.

SAWs: Servants at Work

During 2013, SAWs set a new record by building over 100 wheelchair ramps. Our ten year total is approximately 550 ramps! For our final two ramps in December we had to use hammers to break away the boards from the frozen forklift loads!

Fletcher Place Community Center Fletcher Place is located on the southeast side of downtown Indy. Each month St. Luke’s volunteers help serve breakfast and dinner to the community.

Fox Hill Elementary— Tutoring & Mentoring

There are opportunities for in-class tutoring practically any time during any school day, tutoring in the After School Achievers program (2:30-6PM, M-Th), and a new emphasis on providing mentors (especially men) to have lunch with kids who don’t often experience conversing with adults during meal time. It takes as little as one lunch hour a week to make a difference to a child learning to appreciate the wonderful world of reading. Native American Family Work Project: Rosebud, SD

June 15-21 COST: $350 (+ transportation) Work and live on the reservation with the Lakota

Indians. We will experience native cooking, traditional regalia (clothing) for pow-wows, ceremonial events, games and spirituality (including a sweat lodge education and experience.) We will have a number of projects: 1. KIDS CLUB – an afternoon recreation center— where we will lead educational activities, crafts and games.

2. A CONSTRUCTION PROJECT to be determined upon arrival.The construction project will focus on community improvements like rehabbing homes or working at schools.

Men’s Group for Loss of a Spouse

Every Thursday from 1-2PM in Luke’s Lodge (building located behind St. Luke’s) When men lose their wives to death, life turns upside-down in many different ways. Husbands who are mourning the death of their soul mate may have similar grief issues as women. However, sometimes that embedded message of, “real men don’t cry,” discourages opportunities for processing and healing with the support of others. This men’s group will meet for fellowship and support and to allow a safe and confidential place to “say it all” with other men who mutually understand this complex journey. “REAL MEN” do cry and also “REAL MEN” laugh and even drink coffee together!

Dad’s Group

For any father who has lost a young adult child to illness, accident, suicide, or other. The Dad’s group meets every Tuesday at 7AM for light breakfast at the Hilton Indianapolis North Hotel, 8181 N. Shadeland, and Thursdays at 7AM at Denny’s at I-65 / Greenwood Exit.

One-on-One Grief Counseling

Sometimes the pain of a significant loss needs the

Member Care benefit of time before the idea of group support feels right. If you, or someone you know in your family, workplace or neighborhood would benefit from a one-on-one session of grief counseling, contact St. Luke’s at 317-846-3404. Wholeness and health is the goal of working through loss; we hope no one considers doing it alone.

Grief Ministry Mentors

If you have experienced a loss and are not ready for group support or individual counseling, but would like a supportive friend to talk about your grief journey, Grief Ministry Mentors might be for you. Sometimes just a phone call makes all the difference. There is no commitment or time table. Also, if you are someone who has gifts of compassion and empathy for those going through loss, consider becoming a Grief Ministry Mentor.
