Sermon Title: “The Importance of the Pit” Scripture: Luke 5:12-16 Once, when he was in one of the cities, there was a man covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he bowed with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean.” Then Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said, “I do choose. Be made clean.” Immediately the leprosy left him. And he ordered him to tell no one. “Go,” he said, “and show yourself to the priest, and, as Moses commanded, make an offering for your cleansing, for a testimony to them.” But now more than ever the word about Jesus spread abroad; many crowds would gather to hear him and to be cured of their diseases. But he would withdraw to deserted places and pray. PRAYER OF CONFESSION and RESPONSE Rev. Rob Fuquay Lord of the Sabbath, you have commanded us to be still and to know that you are God. But we struggle to yield our lives to that commandment, it is so hard for us to be still. We work without rest; we applaud ourselves for our sacrifice of energy and time; we inwardly judge those who do not match us in zeal and effort. Yet you do not delight in our restless work; it does not accomplish your will. Bring us to a stop; remind us what is good. Restore in us your divine image, let us be still and remember that you are God. (silent prayer) Leader: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! Dr. Marion Miller Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is the one true church, apostolic and universal, whose holy faith let us now declare: We believe in the one God, maker and ruler of all things, the source of all goodness and beauty, all truth and love. We believe in Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, our teacher, example, and Redeemer, the Savior of the world We believe in the Holy Spirit, God present with us for guidance, for comfort, and for strength. We believe in the forgiveness of sins, in the life of love and prayer, and in grace equal to every need. We believe in the Word of God contained in the Old and New Testaments as the sufficient rule both of faith and of practice. We believe in the Church as the fellowship, for worship and for service, of all who are united to the living Lord. We believe in the kingdom of God as the divine rule in human society, in the final triumph of righteousness, and in the life everlasting. Amen.
