HE CHOSE THE NAILS March 5-April 9

Anger, more than any other emotion, has the power to consume all aspects of our lives, distort our sense of purpose and destroy our relationship with God. When we learn to forgive others and ourselves, we truly receive forgiveness from God.

Max Lucado invites you to examine the cross, contemplate its purpose and celebrate its significance. He examines the symbols s u r r o u n d i n g C h r i s t ’s crucifixion, revealing the claims of the cross and asserting that if they are true, then Christianity itself is true.

God’s Signals In the Race of Faith Jan. 11-Feb. 22 (Rev. Rob Fuquay, Leader)

March 1-April 12 (Rev. Eric Burton-Krieger)

What are you racing for? And how will you claim victory? Every day God is offering us guidance and direction – if only we can grasp it.

A conversation on homosexuality and the church today, beginning with a documentary featuring the stories of five conservative Christian families with children who identify as gay or lesbian. Their journey and struggle sets the backdrop as we hear from LGBT members of St. Luke’s. We’ll conclude with how our church might continue to live out its call to help people find and give hope today.

Author and Pastor of St. Luke’s, Rob Fuquay has come up with a bold, imaginative way to understand God’s signals through the fast-paced world of auto racing. Far-fetched? Not when you consider the apostle Paul himself wrote passionately about “the race of faith.” The DVD features drivers and professionals in auto racing.

Weekdays, March 2-April 13 11:45AM-Noon • Prayer Chapel

April 1 • 9:30-11AM • Fellowship Hall (Dhyana Raynor)

Recognizing that Lent is a time to make a special effort to develop a spiritual discipline, the Spiritual Life Center offers a 15 minute spiritual pause in your busy day. Expect a scripture reading, a meditation and a time of silence.

In preparation for Holy Week, spend a morning in contemplation walking the labyrinth. Being able to walk and pray/meditate is the only prior experience necessary.

INTERACTIVE STATIONS OF THE CROSS Holy Week, April 10-14 8:30AM-5PM • East end of Narthex To help you prepare for Easter we’re inviting you on a meditative journey through the “stations” of Christ’s last days. Permanent Stations of the Cross can be found in most Catholic Churches and we’ve adapted that practice for our context. The experience includes images, meditations and interactive activities to help you slow down and reflect. Included is an opportunity to walk a labyrinth. The entire experience is appropriate for your personal spiritual journey, your Lenten group, your family, your book study or any other group looking for a shared Lenten experience. A printed Stations of the Cross booklet will be available. Offered by Adult Discipleship and the Spiritual Life Center.

DISCIPLESHIP – THE CONTACT SPORT

Men: March 2-5 Women: March 16-19

The 12th National Gathering of United Methodist Men

Second Presbyterian Church

July 7-8 St. Luke’s United Methodist Church

Men: March 16-19 Women: April 20-23 OR May 4-7 Cost: $10 The focus of the Great Banquet is to know Jesus as Lord and Savior and to make Him known. The Great Banquet is an opportunity to be still, to listen, to share and to hear Christ’s plan for this world and for our lives. The Great Banquet is a 72-hour experience – for three days, guests live and study together in worship, prayer and discussion. The Banquet promises to nourish you both physically and spiritually. At the Great Banquet you will experience God’s Agape love and grace in a profound and personal way. St. Luke’s has many members that have attended The Great Banquet and also help with them. If you would like to attend, contact Susan Fuquay at fuquays@stlukesumc.com. St. Luke’s will provide you with a sponsor and all necessary information.

Investing in men helps us to build stronger people, fathers, families and communities as we all try and navigate the contact sport of life. St. Luke’s will host men from around the US at this national conference focused around four tracks: leadership, personal growth, spiritual development and helping to build a ministry to men. St. Luke’s men are grateful to be a partner in this event where men will be challenged to become involved in combating domestic violence, be held accountable in small groups, be involved in church and community outreach and evangelism and be engaged in developing new ways to care for their community, their church and themselves. Contact Rev. Eric Burton-Krieger for more information at bke@stlukesumc.com or visit our webpage at stlukesumc.com/men

children Preschool “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” These are some of the most familiar and powerful words in scripture. This year, our preschool program will focus on care—helping children to understand and trust Jesus as their shepherd. Be sure to pick up your “Steps” materials so you can help plant those powerful words in your child’s heart!

Elementary Baptism is one of the most foundational practices and experiences of the Christian life. For that reason, many children are baptized as infants or young children. However, because they have no conscious memory of being baptized, it is easy for children to lose connection to that experience. So what does it mean for their present lives? We’ll explore Old Testament stories that connect to the meaning of baptism and learn what it means to be dedicated for a purpose. (And if your child has not been baptized yet, join us to learn how this program can be tailored to honor the decision you’ve allowed your child to make on their own!)

Explore the Golden Age of Spain, pre-1492, a time in history when the three Abrahamic faiths, Muslims, Jews and Christians, shared a rich culture for nearly eight hundred years. This Golden Age was a time when harmony and cooperation among the Children of Abraham created exceptional beauty in the arts–architecture, poetry, painting, music and dance–and revolutionized all aspects of life. We will learn how this culture of tolerance was created and how it ended. $3,950.00 per person (double occupancy). This trip includes round trip air and five star hotel accommodations. Betty Brandt, Director of the Spiritual Life Center at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, will lead this special trip through the beautiful Spanish countryside. For more information, email Bob Zehr at rdzehr@ traveltoremember. 48

Rob and Susan Fuquay invite you to join them on an exciting tour celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Enjoy the first two nights in Prague, the City of a Hundred Spires, and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Then travel to Dresden, Germany, the Florence of the North, as you move deep into Reformation Country. See Leipzig, Germany, where Bach spent most of his life. Tour Buchenwald, a Nazi Concentration Camp; visit Wittenberg, the site of Martin Luther’s posting of his 95 theses creating a schism in the Catholic Church. End with a riverboat tour on the Rhine River. This trip includes flights from Chicago to Prague with a return from Frankfurt…plus 8 nights in Five Star Hotels, daily breakfasts and all local transportation.
