Purdue Varsity Glee Club They’re baaack! The high energy young men of the Purdue Varsity Glee Club will return to St. Luke’s on Sunday, April 15 for a performance at 3PM in the Sanctuary.

Under the direction of William E. Griffel, these young men provide an afternoon of beautiful music, as well as a lot of laughs. They often go out into the audience seeking a lady to serenade. Our own Ken Knowles, former Purdue Glee Club member, will host the event.

The concert is sponsored by the St. Luke’s Stephen Ministry for the purpose of funding a benevolence program for church members. So often we forget that there are those in our own congregation who have been downsized, lost their homes and have other financial needs. Conversation Café Wednesdays, April 11 through May 23, we will study The Gifts of the Jews by Thomas Cahill. This book reveals the critical change that made western civilization possible.

Within the ancient religions and philosophies, life was seen as part of an endless cycle; time was like a wheel, spinning ceaselessly. Yet somehow, the ancient Jews began to see time differently. For them, time had a beginning and an end; it was a narrative whose triumphant conclusion would come in the future. From this insight came a new conception of men and women as individuals with unique destinies—and our hopeful belief in progress and the sense that tomorrow can be better than today. Women’s Bible Study Wednesdays, April 18–May 23, 1-2PM in E105. BOOK OF ROMANS Bible Study: It is difficult to overstate the importance of Romans in Christian tradition. Some of the great formers and reformers of church teaching were formed by their reading of Romans. The challenge of reading Romans is to learn to have our own interpretive conversation with the text itself, in spite of centuries of commentary on the text. Workbook is available in Oasis Bookstore. CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.

April at The Track Our virtue for April is HOPE. We're focusing on how we can have hope because of all that God has done. We have a chance every day to respond with hope to show that we trust God’s plan for the world. In all of our lives, there are times when we can only see one piece of what’s going on, and it can be hard to picture something good coming out of it.

As we get ready to celebrate Easter, we’ll define HOPE as believing that something good can come out of something bad. We’ll look at five different Bible stories focusing on Jesus and some of the people who knew him best.

Memory Verse for April: When we remember and believe that this month’s memory verse is true— “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world,” (JOHN 16:33b) —we’re not so caught off guard when things go wrong. We’re more able to see what God might be up to and believe that God wants what’s best for us in the end. Please help your child memorize this memory verse this month. They will have the opportunity each week to recite it for a prize!

Summer Splash Is Coming July 23-27

The kids will be learning, "Jesus is my good friend." Their memory verse is "A friend loves at all times." (PROVERBS 17:17, NIV) If Pre-K kids are able to recite the memory verse to the Small Group Leader, they get a special sticker for their Pit Pass.

Our Summer Splash theme for 2012 is SKY, where kids discover that everything is possible with God! SKY is filled with incredible Bible-learning experiences kids see, touch, and even taste! Science-related gizmos, teambuilding games, cool Bible songs, and tasty treats are just a few of the SKY activities that help faith flow into real life. Plus, we'll help kids discover how to see evidence of God in everyday life—something we call God Sightings. Get ready to hear that phrase a lot!

Holy Week at The Track This month starts with excitement and fun as your children will have an opportunity to wave palm branches and shout “Hosanna” at the entry celebration in the Sanctuary on Palm Sunday. On Good Friday, help your children understand the events of Holy Week in a new way by bringing them to the Fellowship Hall to experience the Stations of the Cross during the hour set aside for families, 4-5PM. On Easter Sunday, we will not have Winner's Circle or Small Groups so that the children can worship with their family and celebrate the wonder of Easter day in the Sanctuary.

FAMILY MINISTRIES Making Your Marriage Work Most people tell you the key to a great relationship is communication, communication, communication. But what if there's much more to a solid, "emotionally intelligent" relationship? What does it take to develop real intimacy, trust, and affection? Starting Sunday, April 15, Couples, Inc. will be offering a four-week study on John Gottman's classic work The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, led by Rev. David Williamson and Wendy Loker, LMFT. Come learn about the "Four Horsemen" that spell doom for a marriage; more importantly, come learn about the seven principles that fill a relationship with real and lasting joy. Our speaker will be Michelle Mayer, Director of Outreach Services, from the Office of the Indiana Attorney General. She will deliver: "Don't Be a Victim" and "Scams and Identity Theft," consumer protection presentations from the Attorney General’s Office. GREEN MINISTRIES E-Waste Recycling Event St. Luke's will host a community electronic waste recycling event on Saturday, April 14, 9AM-1PM in the front parking lot.

Please bring anything with a cord to be safely recycled by RecycleForce Inc. Indiana households, public schools, and small businesses are no longer able to mix unwanted computer monitors, computers, televisions, printers, computer peripherals (such as keyboards and mice), DVD players, video cassette recorders or fax machines with municipal waste that is intended for disposal at a landfill or intended for disposal by burning or incineration. SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMISSION Poverty Simulation A national anti-poverty program called “Circles” will be presenting a poverty simulation at St. Luke’s on Wednesday, April 18, 6-9PM in the Great Hall. This is a follow up to the Poverty 101 class held last fall and offers an opportunity to “do something.” Circles of support are a means of intentional informal support, comprised of an individual or a family in poverty who agrees to welcome “allies” (community volunteers who “make friends on purpose”) to support their dreams and goals. The allies can be anyone, with any level of resources, who genuinely want to help and learn in a mutually respectful, reciprocal relationship. Celebrating Celtic Spirituality with J. Philip Newell –

Enriched Holy Week Prayer Vigil/ Stations of the Cross

J. Philip Newell is an internationally known theologian/ writer who lives in Edinburgh, Scotland and has a base at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico here in the US. His writings speak into the heart of the quest for new beginnings in our individual lives and in the larger world. He combines the Celtic love for all creation with a deep desire for interfaith understanding and appreciation. He is on the road teaching and preaching most of the year (see speaking schedule at www.salvaterravision.org) and preached the 2011 Christmas Day sermon on Day 1 Radio, heard by 500,000 listeners around the world.

Again in 2012 our Holy Thursday –Good Friday Prayer Vigil has been extended to include an opportunity to walk the Stations of the Cross. Each station represents an event along Jesus' path on Holy Thursday to Easter (devotional guide provided). Augustine is probably the most important non-Biblical character or writer in the history of Christianity. His philosophy and doctrines have shaped the nature of Roman Catholicism, most of traditional Protestantism, and even much of Western culture and thought.

This course will describe Augustine‘s life, the world in which he lived, his early pagan background, his Christian Platonic philosophy, and finally his role as Church Father. We will discuss his major doctrines, including Grace, Free Will, the Trinity, Original Sin, and Predestination. We will also explore a very original idea of Augustine—the interaction of God with the soul and the Inner Self. The four sessions will consist of a lecture, sometimes supported by audiovisual material from an expert in this field, and lots of discussion time. Some handout material will be provided. We have an opportunity to serve alongside Second Helpings by delivering food from Trader Joe’s to the House Church of God on Keystone Ave. The church will distribute the food to people in their neighborhood who are in need. PRESCHOOL & PDO Preschool Classes (9 AM-1PM) for three- to five-year-olds are offered in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. All teachers are experienced, qualified, well-trained and strive to maintain strong relationships with the children and their families. Preschool offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum where children may grow socially, creatively, emotionally, cognitively and physically. Children must be three years old by September 1, 2012 to enroll for the 2012-13 school year.

Parents’ Day Out Classes (9AM-1PM) are offered for children ages 10 months to three years. PDO was established to provide parents of young children time for themselves on a regular basis. Children participate in structured play in a safe and nurturing Christian environment one, two or three days per week. Opportunities are provided for children to learn beginning social skills while having fun. Children must be 10 months old by September 1, 2012 to enroll for the 2012-13 school year.

Refugee Assistance Ministry The Refugee Assistance Ministry helps the refugees who live in the Nora area become adjusted to life in America. The refugees, who were forced from their homes and lived in refugee camps for years, have been granted new lives in the United States. For the first few months, they are helped by refugee resettlement agencies. But after that, it is up to church groups and other volunteers to help the refugees become settled, learn English and grow accustomed to our culture.

H.U.G.S. Dinner Out

SAWs stands for Servants At Work, and last year we built 89 ramps for handicapped individuals who were trapped in their homes due to lack of egress. We need volunteers in telephone interviewing of potential clients, website data entry, basic accounting services and, of course, building and installing ramps (we can supply the tools). Our volunteers vary from those who just come for one or two Saturday builds a year to those who volunteer most weeks during our building season, either at the Thursday pre-fab session or the actual onsite build on Saturdays. LIVE! at the Lodge program is a big-group style meeting with plenty of opportunities to meet other students, engage in activities based on your interests, and break down lessons and topics for everyday life application. Our hope is that students will experience a broad variety of meaningful and applicable topics and Bible truths from freshman year to graduation day. We hope to grow in faith and relationships with one another while maintaining an open, welcoming and inviting atmosphere where all students can engage questions about faith and life with one another.
