MONTHLY

COMMUNION Servant Day 2012 Plan to join over 350 members of your St. Luke’s family by participating in the 4th Annual Servant Day on Saturday, August 4. There is something for everyone—young and seasoned, families and singles, high and low energy levels, indoor and outdoor preferences. There are 8,760 hours in a year. This is an opportunity to spend just four of those hours in service to others, sharing God’s love while making new friends. The day will begin with breakfast in the Great Hall, followed by prayer and a rousing send-off, after which teams will be dispersed throughout Pike and Washington Townships. There will be service projects in and around St. Luke’s, at schools and daycare centers, and other community agencies. Signup tables will be in the Narthex on Sunday, July 15, and in both the East and West Passages on the following two Sundays, July 22 and 29. Can’t wait until then? Sign up online now at www.stlukesumc.com (search “servant day”). Let’s make this the biggest, most successful Servant Day yet!

Summer Choir Welcomes You The annual Summer Choir is forming for services in July and August, and all those with choir-singing experience are invited to participate. The group meets at 8:30AM for rehearsal and sings at the 9:30 & 11:00 Sanctuary services on Sundays, July 1, 15, 29 and August 12. RSVP is required by Wednesday the week prior to participate at one or all of the Summer Choir Sundays. For more information (including dress requirements) or to RSVP, contact Nancy Faith at 846-3404 x338 or faithn@stlukesumc.com.

Casual Sundays in July & August This summer, the Chancel Choir takes a well-deserved break and our fantastic Summer Choir takes over. The Summer Choir doesn't wear robes (don't worry, they wear something else!), and so our clergy decided they'd take a robe break too... so we decided, why not just make it Casual Sundays for everyone! So if you'd like to ditch the coat and tie, trade the high heels in for comfy sandals, we encourage you to do so. Just remember: no shoes, no shirt, no... well, we'll still have the service, but you get the idea!

CARE MINISTRIES Knitters Needed

Be a Stephen Minister

The prayer shawl ministry would love to have some more knitters. You are welcome to join them on Tuesdays at 1PM in the church conference room. Or knit from home. For more information or details about the shawl dimensions, please call Helen Vreisman at 439-6347.

Have you ever thought of becoming a Stephen Minister? Applications are available now in the West Passage and online. Training classes begin on Tuesday, September 4. Stephen Ministry is a wonderful way to grow in your faith by serving your fellow man. Stephen Ministers meet one-on-one with people in many difficult situations. Perhaps a person would just like someone to talk to while they recover from an illness, or parent young children, or make a new life after a divorce. You could be that supportive person. We invite you to pray about it. Maybe God is calling you to this service. If you have questions, contact Mary Katherine at 846-3404 x365 or schnitzm@stlukesumc.com.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.

July at The Track Our virtue for July is LOVE. We continue our summer series by looking at something that will begin to happen in our lives as a result of our love and trust in God. When you love and trust God, you will love others. Throughout his ministry, Jesus taught his followers what it meant to love others. So, how do we follow Jesus’ example? How do you love a God you can’t see and touch? You love the ones God loves. And when you love them, you will begin to understand God more and you will learn to love and trust him more as well. Our monthly memory verse brings it even closer to home by encouraging us to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (MATTHEW 22:39)

July at the Mini-Track The kids will be learning “God makes good things.” Their memory verse is “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” (GENESIS 1:31 NIV). If Pre-K kids are able to recite the memory verse to the Small Group Leader, they get a special sticker for their Pit Pass.

Sunny Summer Sundays The Track’s summer programming continues through Sunday, August 12. Children who have completed Kindergarten through 4th grade will attend the first part of worship with their families at both 9:30 and 11:00. Following the Children’s Moment with Pastor Jamalyn, they will go to W125 for fun small group activities, where they will be picked up by their parents following the worship service.

New Check-In System We're excited to launch a new computerized check-in system (CheckPoint) in Children's Ministries. The system will be up and running for all ages in the fall, but we're implementing a "soft start" this summer for elementary aged children. Parents with elementary children should register their children in this new system in The Track area (East Passage). There will be three computer kiosks located across from the pager desk in The Track, and staff available to assist you. Once registered, the printer will produce a name badge for each child as well as a corresponding badge for the parent to use when picking up their child(ren). Parents who are missing their name badges will only be allowed to pick up their children by obtaining permission of the children's ministry staff. Volunteers will not release a child without a badge. The CheckPoint system will provide a greater level of organization during the check-in procedure, improvement in the collection of attendance data, and an increase in the efficiency of our overall administration. But most importantly, the automated system will heighten the overall security of children's ministry and increase parental confidence that each child is as safe as possible while within the walls of St. Luke's UMC.

COMMUNITY MINISTRIES Outreach, Inc.

Habitat for Humanity

Outreach wishes to thank Stephen Ministers and St. Luke’s for the donations we received for our graduates. We are building Rita Parker's lovely, safe, decent and affordable new home at 2402 N. Gale, Indianapolis this month! We have shifts for siding on July 13, interior finish work on July 21, and the last day of the build on July 28. All days we are working both the morning (7:30-11:30) and afternoon (12:15-4:00) shifts. The morning of July 28 is full. All volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. No experience or tools needed. Please e-mail kristinrogers@mac.com to sign up for a shift. All shifts are filled first-come, firstserved. If you are unable to help build, but would like to help on the building site, we are serving lunch on Saturday, July 21.

FAMILY MINISTRIES Take the “Can’t Wait Date” Challenge!

Summer Family Fellowship Opportunities

Attention couples! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to have more fun more often as a couple. To help you do this, St. Luke’s Couples, Inc. is issuing a challenge for you to go on ONE date each of the next four months.

Come connect with other St. Luke's families at fun venues throughout the summer! On Sunday, July 1, we'll be sponsoring a "family day" at Woodland Bowling Center from 2-4PM. Come bowl with your family, challenge another family to a game of putt-putt, or take on your kids in the arcade. Contact Pastor Dave at williamsond@stlukesumc.com in order to confirm your spot (and to let us know in particular if you plan to bowl so we'll have enough lanes reserved).

Each month you will be emailed a .pdf file with a “challenge” date. Each suggested date will include off-beat dining ideas, fun “dares” for each other, and great questions to prompt conversations about your relationship. You can also access the dates at www.stlukesumc.com/ministries/ family/couples and invite other couples to take the challenge with you! Our promise to you: These dates will work on any budget. You can even order pizza and a Redbox movie! They will require little preparation; the hardest part about planning the date is marking the time on your calendar. They’re not just about “solving issues” in your relationship. Yes, there are discussion starters, but they’re fun and positive. By filling out the form on the Couples, Inc. page, which will provide us with your email, you are committing with your spouse to prioritize one date night each of the next four months. Then be on the look-out for the date suggestions, and have FUN!

On Friday night, July 27, join with other St. Luke's families in cheering on the Indians at Victory Field. We'll be sitting out in the lawn. Contact Pastor Dave at 846-3404 x385 or williamsond@ stlukesumc.com before July 12 to take advantage of the lower group rate of $7/ticket. (If you purchase tickets after that date, you'll have to pay the full rate of $9/ticket.)

UPCOMING Family Fellowship Events • BINGO Night! August 18th, 4:30-6:30PM. Sponsored by Children's Commission. See details on page 5. • Family Camping Weekend, September 28-30, held at Camp Tecumseh. • Family Fall Festival, October 28. Trunk or Treat, Pumpkin Olympics, and more!

GREEN MINISTRIES “Going Local” - Sunday Presentation

Green Gratitude

You can support your local farm community and reduce transportation costs by supporting the growing number of Farmers’ Markets and restaurants that serve locally grown food. Talk with Laura Henderson from Growing Places Indy and Bobbi Main-Jackson from Raw Gourmet Delights about Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), antibiotic free beef, organic vegetables and heirloom plants. Sunday, July 22, 11AM-Noon in the Parlor, with an information table in the West Passage, 9AM-12:30PM.

The Green Ministry applauds our e-waste partners, RecycleForce, Inc. On June 1, Gregg Keesling and his staff received an Annual Cultural Vision Award from NUVO. This award celebrates individuals and organizations that are pathfinders in Indianapolis. We join NUVO in thanking RecycleForce for enhancing our quality of life and generating new ideas.

Keep Paper/Magazines/Catalogs Coming! The green and yellow Abitibi bins at the east driveway accept white and colored paper, junk mail, magazines, newspaper and catalogs. No cardboard or corrugated board. You deposited over four tons in January and St. Luke’s earned $72.60, but since then because we didn’t reach four tons each month, we have only earned about $15 per month. Please help St. Luke’s Green Ministry by bringing your paper from home and office.

E-Waste Recycling Anything with a plug can be dropped off anytime at the Recycling Center in Central Passage. Our next RecycleForce e-waste event will be on Servant Day, August 4.

Energy Audit Project Goal Is 400 Homes Perhaps you received an invitation from your energy company to have an energy audit of your home. As part of a year-long incentive program, if you register for the audit through St. Luke’s Green Ministry, St. Luke’s will receive $25 to be used in special “green” St. Luke’s projects. You will get an audit and lots of freebies. There is no pressure to buy anything. Forms are in the Main Office. Please place completed forms in Betty Brandt’s mailbox or contact Sharon Chambers at sharon.chambers39 @comcast.net.

WHY? "Making Sense of God's Will"

Grief and Chronic Pain Support Group Pairing

Join others to begin the film series and book study, WHY?, written by Adam Hamilton, Sunday, July 29, August 5, 12 & 19 at 3PM in the Parlor. The weekly film and accompanying book will focus on the idea "Is it possible to reconcile belief in a loving and powerful God with the suffering in our world." Hamilton will ask us to reconsider the ideas that suffering must be the will of God as we wrestle with questions like "Why do the innocent suffer? Why do my prayers go unanswered? Why can't I see God's will for my life?” We welcome anyone who might be ready to consider these important questions. For more information contact Rev. Marsha Hutchinson at hutchinsonm@stlukesumc.com.

Pain has many "titles" such as physical, emotional, spiritual and others. Sometimes families, friends, the work place and even church members cannot understand when different kinds of pain invite one another into our day-to-day functioning. Come join Dr. Meg Frazer and Rev. Marsha Hutchinson for a combined group discussion on Monday, July 16, 6-7:30PM in N101/102.

Grief Counseling Sometimes the pain of a significant loss needs the benefit of time before the idea of group support feels right. If you, or someone you know in your family, workplace or neighborhood would benefit from a one-on-one session of grief counseling, contact Rev. Marsha Hutchinson at hutchinsonm@ stlukesumc.com. Wholeness and health is the goal of working through loss; we hope no one considers doing it alone.

Grief Ministry Mentors If you have experienced a loss and are not ready for group support or individual counseling, but would like a supportive friend to talk about your grief journey, Grief Ministry Mentors might be for you. Sometimes just a phone call makes all the difference. There is no commitment or time table. Also, if you are someone who has gifts of compassion and empathy for those going through loss, consider becoming a Grief Ministry Mentor. For more information, call Rev. Marsha Hutchinson at 846-3404 x315.

HEALING MINISTRY

Healing Hands Appointments Available St. Luke’s Healing Hands Ministry: A Pilgrimage Healing Process is open to all those seeking prayer and the healing power of touch. Two members of the ministry will welcome you, talk with you briefly, ask you to remove your shoes and jewelry and invite you to lie on a massage table. Your job is to relax and be open to God’s healing energy. The healing touch used in these sessions can relieve stress, tension and fatigue, and frequently any symptoms associated with these conditions. These sessions re-energize and relax persons to enable their own natural resources to deal with illness or injury. Changes in attitude and quality of life often follow and continue the work begun in these sessions. All those with physical, emotional or spiritual concerns, or anyone seeking God’s love can call 317846-3404x442 for a daytime or evening appointment. No fee; donations appreciated.

SPIRITUALITY AND THE ARTS

Lorie Lee (a.lorilee@yahoo.com) is booking exhibits for 2013 in both galleries. If you are interested, please send her a brief description of your work and the month you would prefer.

The Identity Gallery welcomes Yohanna Junker. Born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, Junker has been living in Indianapolis since 2010. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Communication and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Art and Spirituality at Christian Theological Seminary. “Into Awareness” explores powerful spiritual themes: the reaction to suffering, the certainty and resistance to death and the yearning for hope, refuge and reconciliation. Junker says, “It is also my hope that these paintings help create a space in which we can come together as humans to share, dialogue and confront our own narratives.” Walk up the stairs at the east end of the Narthex to experience her artistry. www.yohanajunker.com.

YOUTH MINISTRIES Register for any event at www.stlukesumc.com/youth. OUR MISSION: To welcome all youth and families into loving, Christ-centered

relationships where they can get in tune with God's amazing love and be empowered to transform the world!

PLAN AHEAD FOR THE FOLLOWING YOUTH EVENTS: JULY 12: Sr. High trip to the Indianapolis Indians game and

Open to incoming 6th-9th grade students. Cost is $460 per student. On this trip, Jr. High students will travel to the YouthWorks site in the quiet, southern town of Newport, Tennessee. This town's remote location provides little job opportunity for residents, many of whom struggle with unemployment and poverty. Our students will be serving alongside the friendly residents of Newport as we minister through Kids Club and home improvement projects. We've developed great relationships with the people in Newport and we're excited to continue them. Please register online or email davisk@stlukesumc.com. JULY 30-AUGUST 1: Local Mission Trip

Open to both Jr. High and Sr. High students. Cost per student will be approximately $100. Students will stay overnight at the Lodge and serve locally. Email Avery Hollenback with interest (HollenbackA@stlukesumc.com), or sign up online.

Youth Ministry Summer Overview During the summer months when many of our students are out of school, students are at camps, families are on vacations, and we are on mission trips, our youth ministry relaxes a little from our normal schedule. Even though our ministry schedule changes, we find that it’s a great time for students to have the option of connecting to youth ministry in a more personal, intentional way and can check out our groups. Incoming sixth grade students are welcome in our Jr. High ministry. Incoming freshmen have the option of continuing throughout the summer in Jr. High or checking out the high school options. August 12 is the first Sunday where Freshmen will need to transition fully to Sr. High. To keep up to date with further hangout opportunities and fun activities, check the website at www.stlukesumc.com/ministries/ youth/srhigh or check our facebook groups: St. Luke’s UMC—Sr. High Youth and St. Luke’s UMC—Jr. High Youth. Youth group returns: AUGUST 12 - Fun activity AUGUST 19 - Fun activity AUGUST 26 - Service project SEPTEMBER 9 - Fall Kickoff Party!

Refugee Assistance Nay came to New Jersey after living in a refugee camp for 10 years. He got a job at Walmart, but within the year moved to Indianapolis. He could not get his Walmart papers transferred because he did not understand the uncomplicated "red tape" involved. A simple call by a St. Luke’s member resolved the issue. Tee Tee, an 18-year-old girl, has been in Indianapolis for two years, after living in the refugee camp since she was three. As she sat with a St. Luke’s member she pointed to the red bumps on her face. She was embarrassed and no one in her family knew what to do. The St. Luke’s member said, “Ah, acne.” A quick trip to CVS and an explanation on how to use Clearasil made her smile again. It's simple and easy to help the refugees who live in Nora. If you would like to make a difference in the lives of people like Nay or Tee Tee, contact Cathy Kennedy, 317 418-5869, jaycathy@aol.com.

WEEKLY JR.HIGH OFFERINGS (6-8th grade)

YOUNG ADULT COMMUNITY Missio Dei Outreach Projects Missio Dei is Latin for “The Mission of God,” and that’s what our missions outreach group of our Young Adult Community is all about. Jesus knew that in order to connect with people and share the message of God’s love that he had to be willing to serve them. Missio Dei projects give you the opportunity to share that same message by serving others in the greater Indianapolis community. We have three ongoing projects that we could use help with: 1. Refugee Assistance in the Nora community; 2. Delivering food for Second Helpings; 3. Habitat for Humanity assistance. If you’re interested in any of these projects, contact Chris at thornsberryc@ stlukesumc.com.

Sundays, 9:30-10:30AM at the Lodge. WIRED is our Sunday morning time for students in 6th8th grade. WIRED is designed to connect students to

each other and to God. We want all students to feel welcomed and we encourage them to bring friends. Please check our weekly schedule to confirm youth meetings in the summer. DOES NOT MEET IN THE SUMMER. Sundays, 6-7:30PM at the Lodge. AMPED is the Sunday evening time for students 6th-8th grade and the focus is around small groups. In the morning, students get introduced to the topic and connected at WIRED. Then in the evening, students dig into the topic even more within their small groups. Students experience a time of games in our activities, music, a short teaching, and small groups based on gender and grade.

WEEKLY SR.HIGH OFFERINGS (9-12th grade) We continue to meet on Sunday mornings at 9:30AM, but take a slightly different focus. Rather than working our way through a book of the Bible or lesson series, we jump into fun discussion topics like miracles, movies, current events and pop culture. With each of these, we look into what our faith has to say about them and how we can live in a way that engages the world but honors God.

Wake Up with Starbucks at the Lodge 9:30-10:30AM in the Lodge Cafe (upstairs). This Sunday morning group always has fresh-brewed coffee, donuts and great discussion about hot topics and how our faith applies to them. All high school students, regardless of where they are on their faith journeys, are welcome to come to this honest and open discussion group. JULY JULY JULY JULY JULY
