CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.
May at The Track
Memory Verse for May: When we are responsible with a little, the Bible says we will be given more: more opportunities, more relationships, more ways that we can use what God has given us to reflect God’s character to the world around us. Our monthly memory verse says it this way: “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much. (LUKE 16:10) Please help your child memorize this verse this month. They will have the opportunity to recite it for a prize!
May at the Mini-Track The kids will be learning “God wants me to do the right thing.” Their memory verse is “Learn to do what is right.” (ISAIAH 1:17) If Pre-K kids are able to recite the memory verse to the Small Group Leader, they get a special sticker for their Pit Pass.
The Track: Now on Facebook and Twitter You can now "like" The Track on Facebook at St. Luke's UMC —The Track to get up-to-date information about everything happening in Children's Ministries. You can also follow The Track on Twitter@StLukesTrack, or text to 40404 and type “follow @stlukestrack” to receive tweets as text messages.
Race Day—May 27 Sunday, May 27 is Race Day at The Track! As the rest of the city celebrates the Indianapolis 500, the children of St. Luke’s will also get in on the action at the annual Race Day Challenge! Preschool through 5th grade will be divided into teams for a fun day of activities in the Great Hall at 9:30 and 11AM.
Sunny Summer Sundays The Track’s summer programming begins Sunday, June 3 and continues through Sunday, August 12. Children who have completed Kindergarten through 4th grade will attend the first part of worship with their families at both 9:30 and 11:00. Following the Children’s Moment with Pastor Jamalyn, they will go to E107/109 for fun small group activities, where they will be picked up by their parents following the worship service.
Summer Splash Registration Imagine kids trusting God forever… the sky’s the limit! During the week of July 23-27, St. Luke’s UMC will be transformed into the boundless blue sky! Kids will discover God’s word in a fun and unforgettable way. Each part of SKY Summer Splash is intentionally designed to connect our kids to God, create change in their hearts, and provide them with actionable ways to share God’s love with others. After a week at SKY Summer Splash, our kids will be equipped to live out their faith, taking home what they learned— and share God’s amazing love with their family and friends!

Our virtue for May is RESPONSIBILITY. Every day, we have opportunities to take what God has given to us—our stuff, our words, our relationships—and use them wisely. When we respond to God with the abilities that God has given to us, we are responsible. And when we are responsible, we live a good story. We are a light to others. They will see our good works and glorify God because of how they see God at work in us.
Registration fee is $15/child ($45 max per family) for preschool children age 4 by 9/1/2012 through Pre-K and elementary children who are currently in Kindergarten4th grade.
We need over 100 volunteers to make SKY Summer Splash an unforgettable experience. Current 5th graders through Sr. High may volunteer as youth assistants. Adult volunteer positions may be filled by any members of the congregation—not just parents! Love kids? Consider volunteering as a crew leader and spend the week building relationships with kids and helping them learn about God’s unlimited love for them. Don’t miss the flight! Visit the Summer Splash tables in the East and West Passages on Sunday mornings April 29, May 6 and May 20. Online registration is open April 15-July 1 for both participants and volunteers.
Visit the Summer Programs page on the website by searching “Summer Splash” from the St. Luke’s homepage to see more information, register online, or download registration forms. Questions? Contact the Summer Splash directors at summersplash@stlukesumc.com

CHILDREN’S MUSIC “The Lost Boy” Lost: One 12-year-old future Messiah. Separated from his parents while on a family road trip. Described as wise beyond his years by some, precocious by others. Join the youngest singers from the St. Luke’s Music Department on Sunday, May 6, during Family Fuel for a special musical presentation. “The Lost Boy” is a musical adaptation of the account of Mary and Joseph who, losing track of the young Jesus on the way home from Jerusalem after Passover, eventually find their missing son teaching in the temple. Composers Tom Long and Allen Pote tie in other familiar New Testament stories as well in this musical, including the parable of a beggar who goes hungry outside the house of a rich man holding a banquet for friends. The Family Fuel service begins at 10:45AM in Robertson Chapel. Monetary donations and donations of food items requiring no refrigeration will all go to Outreach, Inc., a local organization that supports homeless teens. Presented by The Elementary and Middle School Choirs of the St. Luke’s Children’s Music Program, Debra Nethercott, Director. For more information contact nethercottd@stlukesumc.com or 846-3404.
COMMUNITY MINISTRIES Fox Hill Recognition Dinner
Outreach, Inc. – Homeless and At-Risk Youth
To recognize the volunteers and to debrief our experiences, we have planned a dinner meeting on Thursday, May 3 at 6PM in the Parlor.
May is a busy month for Outreach, Inc. and we have already begun planning for the annual BBQ Graduation party to recognize the achievements of our 21 high school graduates and GED students. This is an amazing accomplishment for our homeless and at-risk students. For many, it is the only recognition they will receive. We are asking for Wal-Mart gift cards in the amount of $20 each to help make this a celebration our youth will always treasure. You may purchase the gift cards, or write a check payable to St. Luke’s UMC, noting “Outreach, Inc.” on the memo line. The BBQ Graduation Party will be held on Saturday, June 16 at Post Road Christian Church at 1112 North Post Road, from 11AM–1PM. Please join us! Contact Outreach, Inc. at 317.951.8886 or www.outreachindiana.org, or contact Jackie Reed for further info regarding donations for our BBQ Grad Party at 317.332-6550 or jsrmolar@sbcglobal.net.

FAMILY MINISTRIES Take the “Can’t Wait Date” Challenge!
Each month you will be emailed a .pdf file with a “challenge” date. Each suggested date will include off-beat dining ideas, fun “dares” for each other, and great questions to prompt conversations about your relationship. You can also access the dates at www.stlukesumc.com/ministries/family/couples and invite other couples to take the challenge with you! Our promise to you: These dates will work on any budget. You can even order pizza and a Redbox movie and make it work! They will require little preparation; the hardest part about planning the date is marking
the time on your calendar. They’re not just about “solving issues” in your relationship. Yes, there are discussion starters and questions, but they’re fun and positive. By filling out the form on the Couples, Inc. page, which will provide us with your email, you are committing with your spouse to prioritize one date night each of the next four months. Then be on the look-out for the date suggestions, and have FUN!
Now – Get Childcare for Date Nights! St. Luke’s Parents’ Night Out 2012/2013 will be registering new families in May. HEALTH MINISTRY What Did You Say? If you find yourself saying that more frequently than you used to, then stop by the Free Hearing Screening on Sunday, June 3 from 9-11AM in C110. Hearing loss is one of the most common chronic health care problems facing older adults. More than 55 million Americans are estimated to suffer from hearing loss, and 80% of that group is undiagnosed or untreated. As our population continues to age, the problem of hearing loss continues to grow. Recent studies show that up to 50% of Baby Boomers are experiencing significant hearing loss as much as 20 years earlier in life than prior generations. What about you? Have your hearing checked for free, courtesy of St. Luke’s Health Ministry.

MAY SERMON SERIES: “Preparing for Pentecost” Relive the ten days after Jesus ascended into heaven following his resurrection. There was a gathering in Jerusalem for the Jewish harvest festival that was celebrated on the fiftieth day after Passover. While they were there praying, a sound like a rushing wind filled the house, and tongues of fire descended and rested over each of their heads. This was the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Come and enjoy our May Sermon Series that leads to Pentecost Sunday. On Sunday, May 27 we will fellowship with First Christian Church of Noblesville in celebration of Pentecost.

Augustine is probably the most important non-Biblical character or writer in the history of Christianity. His philosophy and doctrines have shaped the nature of Roman Catholicism, most of traditional Protestantism, and even much of Western culture and thought. This course will describe Augustine‘s life, the world in which he lived, his early pagan background, his Christian Platonic philosophy, and finally his role as Church Father. We will discuss his major doctrines, including Grace, Free Will, the Trinity, Original Sin, and Predestination. We will also explore a very original idea of Augustine—the interaction of God with the soul and the Inner Self. The four sessions will consist of a lecture, sometimes supported by audiovisual material from an expert in this field, and lots of discussion time. Some handout material will be provided. Suggested reading: Augustine’s Confessions. Taught by Dr. Michael Condit. Thursdays, May 3-24, Noon-1:30PM, Spiritual Life Center. Registration required, no fee. Every month from May till August we’ll be gathering together for some backyard cookouts at various locations and dates. They’ll be a different Sunday each month at 1PM and will be listed on our Facebook page as well as on the YAC web page. Make sure to take some time and check out when the next one we’ll be and we’ll see you there! If you have any questions, email Chris at thornsberryc@stlukesumc.com.

Missio Dei Outreach Projects Missio Dei is Latin for “The Mission of God,” and that’s what our missions outreach group of our Young Adult Community is all about. Jesus knew that in order to connect with people and share the message of God’s love that he had to be willing to serve them. Missio Dei projects give you the opportunity to share that same message by serving others in the greater Indianapolis community. We have three ongoing projects that we could use help with: 1. Refugee Assistance in the Nora community 2. Delivering food for Second Helpings 3. Habitat for Humanity assistance If you’re interested in any of these projects, contact Chris at thornsberryc@stlukesumc.com.
Sunday Small Group Opportunity Our Young Adult Community is in the process of determining if we want to offer a weekly small group opportunity on Sundays. If you’d be interested in a group geared toward young adults in their 20s/30s that will cover the Bible and faith/spiritual conversations, please fill out our survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/J9GHC57. You’ll find a 30second survey that will help us determine if there is a desire to have a small group meet on Sundays. Thanks!
