Whose Birthday Is It? Once again, St. Luke's will be asking the congregation to think about giving to those in need in addition to those gifts we give our own loved ones. “Whose Birthday Is It?” asks us to remember the reason we give gifts at Christmas and to give in the spirit of Jesus. Pick up a brochure at St. Luke's or download a pdf of the brochure at www.stlukesumc.com. You may choose to support Fletcher Place Christmas Shopping, Fox Hill Elementary School, Heifer International, Mitten Tree, Outreach, Inc., Water for Life and the United Christmas Service. Your gift may be in the form of a financial donation or a specific item/items, and you may give a gift in someone's honor. Cards to notify those persons in whose name you have made a gift are available at the Communication Center in the main office. For information, contact Jayne Thorne.

Café Conversations
Reading the Bible for Life
Wednesdays, now-December 14, 9:3011AM, E105. (Class will NOT meet 12/21 or 1/4.) In Recapturing the Wesleys’ Vision: An Introduction to the Faith of John and Charles Wesley, scholar and teacher Paul Wesley Chilcote provides an introduction to the dynamic faith of John and Charles Wesley. The vital theology of John is skillfully gleaned from his writings. The corresponding faith of Charles is culled from his enduring hymns. This book illuminates the vital balance the Wesleys found in Christian teaching that overcomes the often mutually exclusive options presented in other theological traditions. Join Dr. Marion Miller and gain an appreciation for the leadership of the Wesleys as well as discuss what it means to lives of faith today.
Sundays, January 22–March 18, 11AM-Noon in E213. Pre-registration required. The Bible was written over a period of 1,500 years by at least 39 different authors. Its 66 books include a variety of literary types. Yet in spite of its diversity, the Bible is unified by one story—God’s persistent love for God’s people and God’s passionate desire to redeem them as God’s own. This study will help participants grasp this grand story of Scripture. Learn how the various books of the Bible fit together to communicate God's redemptive message. Listen to the thoughts of some of today’s biblical scholars. Discover new skills for listening to, understanding and responding to God's Word. Workbook is available in Oasis. Led by Chris Thornsberry, Associate Director of Adult Ministries.
Women’s Bible Study Wednesdays, 1-2PM in E105. November 30-December 21: The Journey: Walking the Road to Bethlehem by Adam Hamilton. Using historical information, archaeological data and a personal look at some of the stories surrounding the birth of Jesus, we will have the opportunity to see more clearly the theological significance of the nativity. Hamilton’s hope and prayer for us is that in reliving the story of Jesus’ birth we will experience the “good news of great joy for all people” that comes from knowing the true meaning of Christmas. Susan Fuquay will be the class facilitator. Book may be purchased in the Oasis Bookstore and Gift shop.
Our Evolving Faith Wednesdays, January 18–February 29 (skipping Ash Wednesday, 2/22), 7-8:30PM in E104. Pre-registration requested. It’s been said that we are all theologians in process. This series is an invitation to celebrate our personal spiritual journey, cultivate our own faith formation, and encourage others in their faith walk. It is also an opportunity to discuss “those” things that bother us; that we question and/or doubt. (“It is difficult to give our heart to something our head rejects,” writes Marcus Borg.) Facilitating these conversations will be St. Luke’s attendee, Paul Smith, utilizing the resources of Philip Gulley’s book, The Evolution of Faith, and Marcus Borg’s book, Speaking Christian (both books available in Oasis Bookstore).

ADVENT OPPORTUNITIES
The Journey: Walking the Road to Bethlehem Sundays, November 27–December 18, 11AM-Noon, Parlor. Throughout the writings of Dickens, one can find the values of honesty, compassion, love, justice and mercy. The same is true with “A Christmas Carol.” Bring a friend and join the engaging and thoughtful conversations that will have us reflect upon our expectations for this Advent/Christmas season. Co-leaders for these lunch discussions are Caitlin Drouin and Jennifer Todd, St. Luke’s members and, Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries. CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.
December at The Track This month’s virtue is Generosity—making someone’s day by giving something away. This month we will learn how (1) We can show generosity because of what God has done. (2) God instills generosity in us as we respond to His goodness. (3) God uses generosity in us to influence our families, friends, and neighbors. Remember: A virtue is something God does in us to change the world around us. Our memory verse is “Be rich in good deeds... be generous and willing to share.” 1 TIMOTHY 6:18. If your child can memorize this verse and tell their Small Group Leader, they get a special sticker on their Pit Pass. At the end of the year there will be special awards for those with the most stickers. Want to sleep in? If you would like to get a few extra zzz's, then come to Winner's Circle at 11:00! K-5 students meet in Robertson Chapel on Sunday morning for a worship experience shaped just for them. After we are done with Winner's Circle we go to E106 for small group, where we learn more about the Bible lesson of the day, the memory verse and the virtue. See you at 11!
December at the Mini-Track The kids will be learning “Jesus wants to be my friend forever.” Their memory verse is “God has given a son to us.” ISAIAH 9:6. If Pre-K kids are able to recite the memory verse to the Small Group Leader, they get a special sticker for their Pit Pass.
The Mitten Tree The Track will be collecting hats, mittens/gloves, scarves, socks and new underwear. All items collected will benefit Christamore House. Items can be placed on or under the Mitten Tree located in the Track (East Passage) and outside Robertson Chapel. Items will be collected through December 4.
December 25 Programming There will be no Sunday School on December 25. We will have childcare for children up to three years old at the 10AM service. If you would like to share the Christmas Spirit and help us in the childcare rooms, please contact thetrack@ stlukesumc.com.
Volunteers Needed We are in need of Small Group leaders for all ages from Preschool through 1st grade. Leading a Small Group will offer you an opportunity to not only connect with children, but also help them connect with each other and build community. We are looking for adults who are willing to be a consistent person in the children's lives. If you are interested in investing your time in our kids, please contact thetrack@stlukesumc.com.
Birthday Party for Jesus Mini-Track (preschool and pre-kindergarten) will celebrate Christmas with a Birthday Party for Jesus on December 19 during Mini-Track worship at both 9:30 and 11AM. The celebration will include Christmas songs, a Christmas story, cupcakes and a visit from a special holiday guest.
Save the Date! The 2012 Summer Splash will take place July 23-27 from 9AM-12:15PM. Please note this is a change from the normal June dates. We are excited to be able to welcome our non-traditional calendar students.

The St. Luke's Children's Choirs are collecting donations of $88 per key; your name or the name of the person you would like to honor will go on the piano key of your choice. Be sure to see the keyboard poster in the music department on the second floor. Approximately one-third of the keys have been spoken for, with plenty of black keys to spare. GREEN MINISTRIES More Than Four Tons
Electronic Waste Event
Over four tons a month is the number that earns St. Luke’s Green Ministry a considerable amount of money for paper recycling. Less than four tons a month only earns a small amount. We have only exceeded four tons a month once in 2011. Let’s finish the year with lots of paper, catalogs, mail and newspaper (no cardboard) dumped in the two green and yellow bins at the east driveway. Keep the tonnage coming in 2012!
St. Luke's will host a community electronic waste recycling event on Saturday, January 7, 9AM-1PM at door #7. You may bring anything with a cord to be safely recycled by RecycleForce, Inc. Also bring Styrofoam packing (not peanuts). Indiana households, public schools and small businesses are no longer able to mix unwanted computer monitors, computers, televisions, printers, computer peripherals (such as keyboards and mice), DVD players, video cassette recorders or fax machines with municipal waste that is intended for disposal at a landfill or disposal by burning or incineration. This disposal prohibition can be found in Indiana Code 13-20.5. Everything with a cord must be recycled! For a complete list of what can be recycled at this event, go to www.stlukesumc.com.
Reusable Bottles Make Great Christmas Presents Break the single-use plastic bottle habit! Buy a bright green “bottle” that can fold, snap and attach easily to your belt loop or backpack or fit in your purse. Great for traveling, costs $8. Contact Betty Brandt at brandtb@stlukesumc. com, 846-3404x339.
Green Gratitude Award The Green Ministry wishes to thank the leadership and employees of RecycleForce, Inc. for their hospitality on October 28. Twelve people spent two hours touring the plant and hearing about recycling e-waste and other substances. Our guide introduced us to many employees who have recently been released from prison and are on their way to a productive new life. Help them by recycling all your e-waste.
GRIEF MINISTRY “If one member suffers, all suffer together with it: if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it.” I CORINTHIANS 12:26 Grief is a journey that needs attention; it cannot go away without some hard work. Some people find being with a group of people who "get it" to be life-changing and life-saving in a positive way. Spending time with others in a group can even bring laughter and new friendships. You are invited to come once, or many times, to any group and see if the support of others can bring you comfort. For a listing of ongoing grief support groups, see page 20.

Taking Responsibility for Your Life Workshop Every Wednesday in the Spiritual Life Center, 7:30-8:30PM. Responsibilities. We all have them. But we don’t all take them as seriously as we ought to. Wouldn’t it be great if we all took responsibility for the things we are responsible for? It’s time to stop finger-pointing and excuse-making and to remove the “ir” in “irresponsibility.” In this four-session, video-based study, we’ll journey together and see how to take authentic responsibility for the things in life. Cost of class is $10 and includes a workbook. Pre-registration is required. Register online on our singles class page or with DeAnna Moran at morand@stlukesumc.com or 846-3404. Registration deadline is Thursday, December 29. Class led by Chris Thornsberry, Associate Director of Adult Ministries.

An Introduction to Spirituality “Spirituality” is a term that describes many different experiences in many different religious traditions. It is not about creeds or doctrines or specific theological arguments. Rather, the term usually refers to an individual seeking God through personal experience. Even though Judaism, Christianity and Islam are all considered “religions of the Book,” there are strong spiritual and mystical traditions in all three. Join Dr. Michael Condit in examining the role of spirituality in Christianity and other religions now and over the course of history. Some reading will be suggested. Thursdays, January 12-March 1 (omit 2/16), Noon-1:30PM in the Spiritual Life Center. Registration required, no fee.
