Thanksgiving Service Project St. Luke’s Singles Ministry will again be volunteering alongside others from the St. Luke’s community to feed the homeless of downtown Indianapolis. Chef David Mitchell will be cooking up some wonderful food for them, but we need your help to make sure that all who walk through the door can be fed, and all the shut-ins who need a meal can be fed as well. You can help this year by stopping by one of tables in the East and West Passage each Sunday in November and sign up to volunteer to help cook and carve turkeys, deliver food the night before Thanksgiving to the shelter, work at the shelter on Thanksgiving day, or deliver meals to shut-ins. OR, you can make a financial contribution that will go toward the purchase of food as well. You can also donate food items. For more information or if you have a question, please email Chris Thornsberry at thornsberryc@stlukesumc.com. Thank you in advance for your kind gifts of volunteering, prayer and contribution.

SUNDAY MORNINGS

Café Conversations Wednesdays, November 2- December 14, 9:30-11AM, E105. In Recapturing the Wesleys’ Vision: An Introduction to the Faith of John and Charles Wesley, scholar and teacher Paul Wesley Chilcote provides an introduction to the dynamic faith of John and Charles Wesley. The vital theology of John is skillfully gleaned from his writings. The corresponding faith of Charles is culled from his enduring hymns. This book illuminates the vital balance the Wesleys found in Christian teaching that overcomes the often mutually exclusive options presented in other theological traditions. Join Dr. Marion Miller and gain an appreciation for the leadership of the Wesleys as well as discuss what it means to lives of faith today.

Women’s Bible Study Wednesdays, 1-2PM in E105. November 2-16: Concluding discussions from the book studied in September and October, Questions God Asks Us, by Trevor Hudson. NOVEMBER 23: NO CLASS. November 30-December 21: The Journey: Walking the Road to Bethlehem by Adam Hamilton. Using historical information, archaeological data and a personal look at some of the stories surrounding the birth of Jesus, we will have the opportunity to see more clearly the theological significance of the nativity. Hamilton’s hope and prayer for us is that in reliving the story of Jesus’ birth we will experience the “good news of great joy for all people” that comes from knowing the true meaning of Christmas. Susan Fuquay will be the class facilitator. Book may be purchased in the Oasis Bookstore and Gift shop.

Getting to Know John Wesley Sunday, November 6, 11AM-Noon in the Parlor. Who is John Wesley? Who were the influential persons in his life? What were the transformational experiences that shaped his life? What were the tenets and practices of his faith that attracted others and became founding principles of the Meth-odist Movement? Class leader will be Dr. Don Griffith, retired United Methodist minister.

Haiti: A Life-Changing Trip Sunday, November 13, 11AM-Noon in the Parlor. In July, two dozen youth, college students and adults went to Fondwa, Haiti, on a mission trip. What did they do? What did they learn? What difference did this experience make in their lives? Come hear their stories and insights as they share with us about this amazing week.

The Help Sunday, November 20, 11AMNoon in the Parlor. Would you like the opportunity to talk with others who have read the book or seen the movie The Help? Discuss with others that which you liked, the things that disturbed you, and insights for living today. The discussion leaders will be Marsha Reynolds, St. Luke’s member, and Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries.

Jews and Christians in Candid Conversation Registration recommended. Join with others from St. Luke's, Congregation Beth-El Zedeck, and 2nd Presbyterian Church for study and conversation of the scriptures as we explore what Jews and Christians should know about each other and their sacred texts. All sessions meet 7-9PM. November 2 at Beth-El Zedeck (600 W. 70th St.). “The Binding of Isaac: What if the Angels Came too Late?” Discover how Jews and Christians read the same story differently and why it matters. LEADERS: Rabbi Sandy Sasso of Congregation Beth-El Zedeck, and Dr. Holly Hearon of Christian Theological Seminary. November 16 at St. Luke’s (100 W. 86th St.). “Psalms and Healing in Jewish & Christian Tradition.” A musical and liturgical interpretation. November 30 at Beth-El Zedeck. “Reading Isaiah: Jewish & Christian Perspectives” LEADERS: Dr. Gerry Janzen, Professor of Old Testament at Christian Theological Seminary.

New Beginnings Sundays, 9:30-10:30AM in E213. What kind of story are you telling with your life? Is it a story that is compelling? Is it worth passing on to others? Or is it one that would put someone to sleep? In November and December, our couples' class will study Don Miller's book that tackles these very questions: A Million Miles in a Thousand Years. In the book, Mr. Miller taps into the idea of living into your dreams and gifts, and living a bigger and better story out of them. Join us for an interesting discussion and a chance to connect with other couples in the church. No registration required, simply contact Nathan Montgomery with any questions at n8withan8@gmail.com or 340-7115.

Women’s Advent Luncheon

ADVENT OPPORTUNITIES

The Journey: Walking the Road to Bethlehem Sundays, November 27–December 18, 11AMNoon, Parlor. Using historical information, archaeological data, and a personal look at some of the stories surrounding the birth of Jesus, we will have the opportunity to see more clearly the theological significance of the nativity. Hamilton’s hope and prayer for us is that in reliving the story of Jesus’ birth we will experience the “good news of great joy for all people” that comes from knowing the true meaning of Christmas. Join Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries, and take this journey together. Book may be purchased in the Oasis Bookstore.

Thursdays, December 1-22, Noon–1:30PM, Parlor. Pre-registration required; cost is $25. Christmas Carol Bible Study: This videobased Bible study features the classic Charles Dickens' film as a musical with Kelsey Grammer as Scrooge. Throughout the writings of Dickens, one can find the values of honesty, compassion, love, justice and mercy. The same is true with “A Christmas Carol.” Bring a friend and join the engaging and thoughtful conversations that will have us reflect upon our expectations for this Advent/Christmas season. Co-leaders for these lunch discussions are Caitlin Drouin and Jennifer Todd, St. Luke’s members and, Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries. Childcare provided with advance registration; a lunch needs to be provided for your children.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.

November at The Track This month’s virtue is Gratitude—letting others know you see how they’ve helped you. This month we will learn (1) We can show Gratitude because of what God has done. (2) God instills Gratitude in us as we respond to His goodness. (3) God uses Gratitude in us to influence our families, friends and neighbors. Remember: A virtue is something God does in us to change the world around us.

Mitten Tree The Track (Children's Ministries) will be collecting hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, socks or underwear (sizes infants to teens) for Christamore House November 13-December 4. Please place donations by the trees in the Track (East Passage) and in front of Robertson Chapel by December 4.

Volunteers Needed Our memory verse is “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 THESSALONIANS 5:18, NIV. If your child can memorize this verse and tell their Small Group Leader, they get a special sticker on their Pit Pass. At the end of the year there will be special awards for those with the most stickers.

November at the Mini-Track The kids will be learning “God made me.” Their memory verse is “Be kind and loving to each other.” EPHESIANS 4:32, NCV. If Pre-K kids are able to recite the memory verse to the Small Group Leader, they get a special sticker for the Pit Pass. Children in Early Childhood Sunday School classes will be celebrating Thanksgiving with the Five Kernels of Corn on November 20 during Mini Track Worship.

We are in need of Small Group leaders for all ages from Preschool through 1st grade. Leading a Small Group will offer you an opportunity to not only connect with children, but also help them connect with each other and build community. We are looking for adults who are willing to be a consistent person in the children's lives. If you are interested in investing your time in our kids, please contact thetrack@stlukesumc.com.

Save the Dates! February 25 is the first annual “Impact Conference: Parenting with Purpose” at St. Luke’s. The keynote speaker is Carey Niewhoff who co-authored Parenting Beyond Your Capacity. Save the date in your calendar and plan to be at this great event. Details TBA. ••• Also the 2012 Summer Splash will take place July 23-27 from 9AM-12:15PM. Please note this is a change from the normal June dates. We are excited to be able to welcome our non-traditional calendar students.

The third Sunday of every month is hereby decreed Family Fellowship Night at St. Luke’s! The program includes the fabulous Indianapolis Men’s Chorus and the Indianapolis Women’s Chorus. Memorial Quilts will be on display, and a candle lighting memorial will be available.

GREEN MINISTRIES More Than Four Tons

Green Gratitude Award

Over four tons a month is the number that earns St. Luke’s Green Ministry a considerable amount of money for paper recycling. Less than four tons a month only earns a small amount. We have only exceeded four tons a month once in 2011. Let’s finish the year with lots of paper, catalogs, mail and newspaper (no cardboard) dumped in the two green and yellow bins at the east driveway. Keep the tonnage coming in 2012!

The United Methodist Men working the Fish Fry on October 6 outdid themselves. Not only did they provide tasty food for hundreds of people, they carried all their recycling (flatten cans, plastic and cardboard) out to the bins without even being asked to do so. The Green Ministry is IMPRESSED!

Collapsible, Ecologically Safe, Reusable Bottle Break the single-use plastic bottle habit! Buy a bright green “bottle” that can fold, snap and attach easily to your belt loop or backpack or fit in your purse. Great for traveling, costs $8. Contact Betty Brandt at brandtb@stlukesumc. com, 846-3404x339.

Green Ministry Leadership Team Our ministry leadership team meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Next meeting is November 9, 5:30-7PM in E213 and welcomes new people to the discussion. Contact Sharon Chambers at sharon.chambers39@comcast.net or 317-578-7502, or just show up.

Hugged by These Walls:

SPIRITUALITY AND THE ARTS

Stories of Central Avenue Methodist Church

“Songs of the Spirit” Exhibit and Reception Drawing inspiration from ancient, traditional and contemporary spiritual music, Scott Semester showcases photography, collage and drawings in "Songs of the Spirit," his debut exhibition at St. Luke’s Mezzanine Gallery, November 1-22. Opening reception will feature a brief musical performance to complement the visual art. Friday, November 4, 78:30PM, Mezzanine Gallery.

Studio 3 Art Ministry for Artists & Dabblers Anyone interested in building an art community at St. Luke’s is welcome to come spend the day (or a portion of the day) with other artists. Bring your favorite medium and plan to go out for lunch. Occasional field trips and pitchins too. Every Thursday, 9AM-4PM in C122. For information, contact Karen Porter at porter.joe@sbcglobal.net.

Studio 3 Art Ministry — Matting Workshop Local artist Barbara Stark will teach techniques on matting your artwork and tips on cutting your own mats. Bring any mat cutting device or matboard you may already have. Some practice mats and cutters will be available for use. Thursday, November 10, 10AM-4PM in C122. Please bring a dish to share at pitch-in lunch. For further information, contact Linda Etherton at j.etherton1@juno.com.

St. Luke’s UMC usually dates her story to January 11, 1953 when a group from Central Avenue Methodist Church began worshiping in the Broad Ripple American Legion Hall. Now take advantage of the opportunity to hear about 120 years of Central Avenue’s history as told by storyteller Sally Perkins. Central Avenue was once the largest Methodist congregation in the state and its members made a powerful contribution to not only to the creation of St. Luke’s, but to the creation of Indianapolis. Be captivated by personal stories of more than 25 church members—stories of success and struggle through a century of change. Storytelling event on Friday, November 18, 7-8:30PM in Robertson Chapel. Cost is $5 at the door.

Studio 3 Art Ministry — Christmas Card Mania Bringing card ideas and supplies to share with others always makes for a fun and busy day, but this year we are introducing a card exchange. If you care to participate, please make at least five cards ahead of the workshop to give away. A light lunch will be provided, and each participant should go home with at least five cards created by others, as well as those you craft for yourself. Thursday, December 1, 10AM-4PM in C122. For further information, contact Linda Etherton at j.etherton1@juno.com.

UNITED METHODIST MEN Men's Breakfast

Theology Unplugged

All men are invited to the United Methodist Men's monthly breakfast on Saturday, November 5 at 8AM in Fellowship Hall. We offer a hearty breakfast, fellowship, sharing and an interesting program. Our featured guest for the November program will be chef Dave Mitchell. For the past 14 years, Dave has organized a Thanksgiving dinner for the needy. Come learn about Dave's passion for serving others and what this mission means to him. Please call Chris Bailey at 317-306-8491 to RSVP. This will assist in planning and allow for the correct amount of food.

Where do we go from here? For many of us, the most puzzling and difficult questions surrounding Christianity is what happens after we die. We suppose there is a heaven, but what will it be like, or perhaps more importantly, who will be there? Not surprisingly, we all answer these questions differently, and even the Bible seems to offer multiple viewpoints on the subject. Come share a time of open discussion, and perhaps explore how what we believe about the next life impacts the way we live this life. Theology Unplugged is a place for men to gather and share about life and faith in a more relaxed atmosphere. Next meeting: Wednesday, November 16, 8:30PM at the Rusty Bucket—86th and Old Town Lane (east of Ditch Road). Contact Matt Roop at Matt Roop at mkroop66@gmail.com or 317- 692-1865 if you intend to be there.

COMMUNITY MINISTRIES Construction Ministry/SAWS St. Luke’s Construction Ministry (SAWS=Servants at Work) has been a very successful mission that provides wheelchair ramps for disabled people. In 2010 we built 76 ramps in the Indianapolis area. In effect, we free people imprisoned in their homes due to their inability to afford wheelchair ramps to get in and out over their front steps. In addition to utilizing volunteer talents to build the ramps, we need assistance in the administrative process, such as in computer entry and calling applicants to gain information about their need. If you would like to help, or would like information, please contact Paul Snyder at psnyder1@indy.rr.com or 695-0585.

Due to increasing needs in the food pantry, your donations of dried beans, rice and canned salsa are needed and appreciated. Bulk quantities are acceptable.
