COMMUNION UMW Collecting Donations for Fletcher Place Christmas
Thanksgiving Service Project St. Luke’s Singles Ministry will again be volunteering alongside others from the St. Luke’s community to feed the homeless of downtown Indianapolis. Chef David Mitchell will be cooking up some wonderful food for them, but we need your help to make sure that all who walk through the door can be fed, and all the shut-ins who need a meal can be fed as well. You can help this year by stopping by one of tables in the East and West Passage each Sunday in November and sign up to volunteer to help cook and carve turkeys, deliver food the night before Thanksgiving to the shelter, work at the shelter on Thanksgiving day, or deliver meals to shut-ins. OR, you can make a financial contribution that will go toward the purchase of food as well. You can also donate food items. St. Luke’s United Methodist Women are collecting donations for the Fletcher Place Christmas Shopping Program now through Monday, November 28. This program serves nearly 125 families and 400 children. All donations must be NEW AND UNWRAPPED. Clothing and gifts for children of all ages are needed, but the area of most need is teen boys. Parent gifts are also needed, including blankets and items for the kitchen and bath. Need more ideas? Pick up a shopping list at the Information Desk or online. Donations can be placed in the wooden collection bins in the West Passage. Eve Circle will be delivering the items on Tuesday, November 29. In Recapturing the Wesleys’ Vision: An Introduction to the Faith of John and Charles Wesley, scholar and teacher Paul Wesley Chilcote provides an introduction to the dynamic faith of John and Charles Wesley. The vital theology of John is skillfully gleaned from his writings. The corresponding faith of Charles is culled from his enduring hymns. This book illuminates the vital balance the Wesleys found in Christian teaching that overcomes the often mutually exclusive options presented in other theological traditions. Christmas Carol Bible Study: This videobased Bible study features the classic Charles Dickens' film as a musical with Kelsey Grammer as Scrooge. CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.
November at The Track This month’s virtue is Gratitude—letting others know you see how they’ve helped you. This month we will learn (1) We can show Gratitude because of what God has done. (2) God instills Gratitude in us as we respond to His goodness. (3) God uses Gratitude in us to influence our families, friends and neighbors. Remember: A virtue is something God does in us to change the world around us.
Mitten Tree The Track (Children's Ministries) will be collecting hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, socks or underwear (sizes infants to teens) for Christamore House November 13-December 4. Please place donations by the trees in the Track (East Passage) and in front of Robertson Chapel by December 4.
Volunteers Needed Our memory verse is “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 THESSALONIANS 5:18, NIV. If your child can memorize this verse and tell their Small Group Leader, they get a special sticker on their Pit Pass. At the end of the year there will be special awards for those with the most stickers.
November at the Mini-Track The kids will be learning “God made me.” Their memory verse is “Be kind and loving to each other.” EPHESIANS 4:32, NCV. If Pre-K kids are able to recite the memory verse to the Small Group Leader, they get a special sticker for the Pit Pass. Children in Early Childhood Sunday School classes will be celebrating Thanksgiving with the Five Kernels of Corn on November 20 during Mini Track Worship.
We are in need of Small Group leaders for all ages from Preschool through 1st grade. Leading a Small Group will offer you an opportunity to not only connect with children, but also help them connect with each other and build community. Our mission statement is short and simple: "Equipping and empowering homeless teens and young adults to exit street life.” Our Outreach youth are in great need of new hoodies to keep them warm this winter while they are living on the streets of Indianapolis and surrounding areas. Family Fellowship Night
This fall, we’re launching a new ministry for couples in our church. Our mission is to help couples thrive in their relationships, and we believe that in order to thrive, it is essential that couples be in community with other couples. Starting this month, we will begin by organizing small group studies for couples throughout our church. Studies will last for five weeks—email us at coupleslife@stlukesumc.com to find times and locations that would fit you.
The third Sunday of every month is hereby decreed Family Fellowship Night at St. Luke’s! Join other families of our church at 5PM for a pizza dinner, followed by “Mission Possible Kids” for elementary-aged children, and parenting study groups for adults (childcare will be provided for children aged kindergarten and under). Come connect with other families and take time with other parents to reflect on the challenges and joys of parenthood.

FELLOWSHIP Elderberries The Elderberries dinner and program will be Thursday, November 3 in Fellowship Hall. Dinner will be served at 5:30PM with entertainment following. VOCE was formed in 2006 by St Luke's former music director and educator, Charles Goehring. The 20 auditioned singers represent some of the finest vocal talent in Indiana. GLOBAL HEALTH MINISTRIES World AIDS Day The Global Health Commission celebrates World AIDS Day with increased awareness of the pandemic worldwide, nationally and locally. Visit the Global Health Commission table in the West Passage on November 20 & 27 for more information, including where to get tested for free. Stop by the Imani table to support the HIV-infected in Kenya by buying products they make. Wear a red ribbon. There are celebrations around the world to remember those that have died with AIDS and to support those living with HIV or AIDS, and to share our concern and care about the disease—several events are in the Indianapolis area. One community event is on December 1 at 6PM at The Church Within, 1125 Spruce St. near Fountain Square. The program includes the fabulous Indianapolis Men’s Chorus and the Indianapolis Women’s Chorus. Memorial Quilts will be on display, and a candle lighting memorial will be available.
GREEN MINISTRIES More Than Four Tons
Green Gratitude Award
Over four tons a month is the number that earns St. Luke’s Green Ministry a considerable amount of money for paper recycling. Less than four tons a month only earns a small amount. We have only exceeded four tons a month once in 2011. Let’s finish the year with lots of paper, catalogs, mail and newspaper (no cardboard) dumped in the two green and yellow bins at the east driveway. Keep the tonnage coming in 2012!
The United Methodist Men working the Fish Fry on October 6 outdid themselves. Not only did they provide tasty food for hundreds of people, they carried all their recycling (flatten cans, plastic and cardboard) out to the bins without even being asked to do so. The Green Ministry is IMPRESSED!

GRIEF MINISTRY All Saints’ Day Service
HUGS Holiday Pitch-In
Thursday, November 1, 7PM in Robertson Chapel. This is a service to honor those saints who have gone before us, especially beloved family and friends. There will be a special video remembrance for losses of this past year, Holy Communion, candle lighting, beautiful music, and the reading of names with the tolling of the bell. Led by Rev. Marsha Hutchinson and Rev. David Williamson.
On Sunday, December 4, 2-4PM in the Parlor, there will be a holiday reunion for anyone who has participated in the H.U.G.S support groups in years past or currently. Everyone is asked to bring a vegetable dish, salad or dessert. Main course will be provided. We will have a "special visitor" from the North Pole bringing gifts.

Fourth Year with Dr. Marion Miller 2011 is the fourth year with Dr. Marion Miller as the Pastor for Later @ St. Luke’s. This year we plan to celebrate two consecutive Sundays. On November 6 we will welcome Pastor Larry Bates from Community Life Line Christian Church and the “Men of One Accord” Gospel Singers. Then on November 13, the St. Stephens Christian Church and Praise Team will join us. We will gather and celebrate these past four years of accomplishments. MUSIC MINISTRIES In Recital: Bruce Neswick Sunday, November 6, 3PM, Sanctuary. The newest member of the Indiana University/Jacobs School of Music faculty, organist Bruce Neswick has most recently served as Director of Music at the renowned Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York City. A dazzling recitalist and acclaimed improviser, Neswick delights audiences with his diverse programming. The St. Luke’s Sanctuary organ, an 80-rank Goulding & Wood instrument, will be heard in its full grandeur. The performance will benefit the Goulding & Wood/St. Luke’s UMC organ scholarship at Indiana University.
“For All the Saints” The fourth anniversary of “For All the Saints,” St. Luke's organist Charles Manning's album of beloved hymns, is November 1—All Saints’ Day. On Sunday, November 6, Charles will be available in the Oasis Bookstore and Gift Shop after each service to sign and dedicate copies of the recording. Hymns on the disc include "Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art," "Jesus Loves Me," "In the Garden," "Holy, Holy, Holy," and many others. A printed insert provides the composer for each hymn tune, as well as other interesting historical information. All of the hymns are arranged by Charles and played on St. Luke's Goulding & Wood Pipe Organ. The CD ($15) is available in Oasis, or by contacting Charles at 218-8432 or manningc@stlukesumc.com.

This year’s annual Candlelight Christmas Concerts on Friday, December 2 at 7:30PM and Saturday, December 3 at 4PM will reflect on what it means to open our hearts and homes to a Savior born in relative homelessness, as there was “no room in the inn.” More than 200 musicians and seven choirs and ensembles, including the St. Luke’s Orchestra, Chancel Choir, Children’s Choir, Wesleyan Ringers and New Song, will perform selections based on familiar carols, such as “The First Noel,” “In the Bleak Midwinter,” and “Joy to the World.” To learn more about the concert selections, sign up for the St. Luke’s Performing Arts e-newsletter at the e-Newsletters link at the top of the home page at www.stlukesumc.com. SOCIAL JUSTICE Poverty 101- The Psychology of Poverty Tuesdays, 7–8:30PM, November 8-December 20. Poverty 101 is a course designed to help you understand how the impoverished see, interpret and interact with the world around them. This interactive seven-week course will help prepare you for urban or third world ministry. St. Luke’s UMC usually dates her story to January 11, 1953 when a group from Central Avenue Methodist Church began worshiping in the Broad Ripple American Legion Hall. Now take advantage of the opportunity to hear about 120 years of Central Avenue’s history as told by storyteller Sally Perkins. Central Avenue was once the largest Methodist congregation in the state and its members made a powerful contribution to not only to the creation of St. Luke’s, but to the creation of Indianapolis. Where do we go from here? For many of us, the most puzzling and difficult questions surrounding Christianity is what happens after we die. Come share a time of open discussion, and perhaps explore how what we believe about the next life impacts the way we live this life. YOUTH MISSION TRIPS June 23-29, 2012: Senior High Mission Trip to New Orleans This experience is open to all incoming 9-12th grade students and the graduating high school class of 2012. Cost is $550. July 15-21, 2012: Jr. High Mission Trip to Eastern Tennessee Open to incoming 7-9th grade students. Cost is $500/student. We will travel to the YouthWorks site in Newport, TN. The region is known for camping in the Smoky Mountains, hiking the Appalachian Trail, and the traditional Bluegrass music. Unfortunately, the town's remote location provides little job opportunity for residents, many of whom struggle with unemployment and poverty. Our students will be serving alongside the local residents as we minister through Kids Club and home improvement projects. Open Labyrinth Walk Walking a labyrinth is as simple as putting one foot in front of the other. There are no rules or special words, no dogma that you have to know or agree with. Come wanting a tool to help you slow down, focus, pray/meditate and listen for the still, small voice of the Divine. The path is unicursal- there is only one entrance/exit. There are no tricks or dead ends. Just stay on the path and you will reach the center. Reverse your steps on your journey out. The walk takes about 20-30 minutes and is a wonderful way to find peace at the end of a busy week. Every Friday, 5-7PM in Fellowship Hall or N103/104. No registration or fee.

We have a new check-in process for your elementary children this year. When you bring your child(ren) to Robertson Chapel for Winner’s Circle, you will need to check them in and share who will pick them up from their Small Group classroom. Please look for your child's class sign for quick check-in. After worship, you will need to show some kind of ID to pick up your child. If you have a pager for younger children you can give us the pager number and use that instead. COMMUNITY MINISTRIES Construction Ministry/SAWS St. Luke’s Construction Ministry (SAWS=Servants at Work) has been a very successful mission that provides wheelchair ramps for disabled people. In 2010 we built 76 ramps in the Indianapolis area. In effect, we free people imprisoned in their homes due to their inability to afford wheelchair ramps to get in and out over their front steps. In addition to utilizing volunteer talents to build the ramps, we need assistance in the administrative process, such as in computer entry and calling applicants to gain information about their need. UNITED METHODIST WOMEN Cookbook The UMW cookbook is still available for purchase in the main office during regular business hours. The cookbook contains over 500 recipes generously donated by members of the congregation, their family and friends. It costs $15 and the proceeds benefit various UMW sponsored organizations.

UMW Reading Group This month we will consider the plight of women in various countries and think about the application of their stories to issues of exploitation of women and children in our own country. We will be discussing I am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced by Nujood Ali and The Road of Lost Innocence, The True Story of a Cambodian Heroine by Somaly Mam. Attendees are encouraged to read one of the selections—both if they have the time and interest—as they prepare for our conversation. We'll meet on Monday, November 28 from 7-8:30PM in the Parlor. Sundays, 6-7:30PM at the Lodge. AMPED is the Sunday evening time for students 6th-8th grade and the focus is around small groups. In the morning, students get introduced to the topic and connected at WIRED. Then in the evening, students dig into the topic even more within their small groups. Live! at the Lodge Sunday nights, 6-7:30PM. This is our Sunday evening youth group meeting for Sr. High students. LIVE! at the Lodge program is a big-group style meeting with plenty of opportunities to meet other students, engage in activities based on your interests, and break down lessons and topics for everyday life application. Our hope is that students will experience a broad variety of meaningful and applicable topics and Bible truths from freshman year to graduation day. We hope to grow in faith and relationships with one another while maintaining an open,

welcoming and inviting atmosphere where all students can engage questions about faith and life with one another. Each week's meeting includes: ● An icebreaker-type activity to get things started as a group ● Worship with our live youth band ● A short message from an adult leader or student volunteer ● Application points for breakout discussion and activity groups ● Closing time together as a group for prayer and sendoff ● Plenty of hangout/welcoming/gathering time Our hope is that through large group games and activities balanced with small group discussions, students will be able to meet one another and develop significant friendships with one another and mentoring relationships with adult leaders. Activities we do throughout the year include art, basketball, dodgeball, kickball, coffee and music, skits, etc. Students of all interests and personalities are welcome.
