Now that the holidays are over, the world will be turning its attention to Indianapolis as we proudly host Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday, February 5, 2012. On January 8, we will launch our first sermon series of 2012, “The Greatest Game.” In his letter to the church at Philippi, Paul writes, as he describes working toward having a fuller relationship with Jesus, “Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on towards the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.” What are our goals in pursuing a more Christ-like existence? How do we play the “game” that we call life? Join us as we examine these and other life questions.
Seeing the Unseen St. Luke’s emphasis for 2012 will be to consider what it means to see the unseen. What is the unseen future God has for us? What are the possibilities? What are the tangible ways God would have us share His love that make an impact in people’s lives near and far? “Seeing the Unseen” will be our theme this year. When we ask, “Where would God have us go in the coming decade?” what do you see? Tomorrow’s reality will come from that! Wednesdays, January 4–April 11, 1-2PM in E105. “That’s What the Man Said: The Sayings of Jesus.” This is a study and devotional commentary on some of the most important words of Jesus, sayings that can guide and strengthen us as we attempt to live with purpose and meaning as Christians. Each page in the study offers commentary in one column, as well as exercises and guidance for reflection in another. Some chapter titles include: Violets Cracking the Rock; Living in our Second Childhood; The Poor You Always Have with You; The Difference Between Life and Death is More than a Tombstone; and, You Shall Be My Witness. Café Conversations Wednesdays, January 11–February 8, 9:3011AM in E105. The Journey: Walking the Road to Bethlehem. What a way to begin the New Year! Join with others as we enhance our spiritual journey. Author and lead pastor of The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, Leawood, Kansas, Adam Hamilton, brings scripture to life in his newest book. Walk the road to Bethlehem as we use video clips to show the many details not described in the scriptures. Hamilton shares details about the logistics, the terrain, the culture and the people of 1st century Palestine. This study will make us think, or at the least, reminds us of many little details that may seem insignificant, but are important to the overall story of Mary, Joseph and Jesus, a baby who changed the world. Our Evolving Faith Wednesdays, January 18–February 29 (skipping Ash Wednesday, 2/22), 7-8:30PM in E104. Pre-registration requested. It’s been said that we are all theologians in process. This series is an invitation to celebrate our personal spiritual journey, cultivate our own faith formation, and encourage others in their faith walk. It is also an opportunity to discuss “those” things that bother us; that we question and/or doubt. (“It is difficult to give our heart to something our head rejects,” writes Marcus Borg.) Facilitating these conversations will be St. Luke’s attendee, Paul Smith, utilizing the resources of Philip Gulley’s book, The Evolution of Faith, and Marcus Borg’s book, Speaking Christian (both books available in Oasis Bookstore).
Reading the Bible for Life Sundays, January 22–March 18, 11AM-Noon in E213. Preregistration required. The Bible was written over a period of 1,500 years by at least 39 different authors. Its 66 books include a variety of literary types. Yet in spite of its diversity, the Bible is unified by one story—God’s persistent love for God’s people and God’s passionate desire to redeem them as God’s own. This study will help participants grasp this grand story of Scripture. Learn how the various books of the Bible fit together to communicate God's redemptive message. Listen to the thoughts of some of today’s biblical scholars. Discover new skills for listening to, understanding and responding to God's Word. Workbook is available in Oasis. Taking control of these choices and documenting them in advance can be a huge comfort to those we leave behind. Having a group discussion about living fully and dying well is a beginning and can actually relieve the dread of death details. Join Rev. Marsha Hutchinson for discussion regarding the difference between living wills, medical power of attorney and a DNR order. What is hospice and palliative care? What if I want to stay at home? A Faith of Your Own: Naming What You Really Believe Mondays, February 27–March 26, 7-8:30PM in E107-109. Pre-registration recommended. What we believe evolves in response to insights into the Bible, to questions or doubts we face, to changes in life circumstances, or to things that happen in the larger world. This class is designed to help participants define and articulate their personal beliefs in a consistent way. The class will be led by Dr. Ron Allen, Professor of Preaching/New Testament, Christian Theological Seminary. Dr. Allen will outline the most common ways a certain topic is understood in the Bible. He will identify the ways the church has interpreted the topic as well as introduce contemporary perspectives on each topic. His book, A Faith of Your Own, can be purchased in Oasis.

France Join former St. Luke’s senior pastor (1967-1993) and WWII veteran Dr. E. Carver McGriff this September on a trip of a lifetime to visit the coast of Normandy, France. Holy Land Our most recent former senior pastor, Dr. Kent Millard, will lead a trip to the Holy Land in October 2012. Have communion in the Garden of Gethsemane, and visit the sites that many believe were the Upper Room and the Tomb of Jesus. CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.
January at The Track This month’s virtue is Self-Control: Choosing to do what you should do, not what you want to do. The memory verse is: “My dear brothers and sisters, pay attention to what I say. Everyone should be quick to listen. But they should be slow to speak. They should be slow to get angry.” JAMES 1:19, NIV. This month, we will think about how: (1) We can display self-control as a response to God; (2) God empowers us with self-control to respond wisely; and (3) God uses self-control in us to influence our families, friends, and neighbors. Remember: A virtue is something God does in us to change the world around us. Elementary students will share in communion on January 29 at 9:30 and 11AM. Preschool Classes (9 AM-1PM) for three- to five-year olds are offered in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. All teachers are experienced, qualified, well-trained and strive to maintain strong relationships with the children and their families. Preschool offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum where children may grow socially, creatively, emotionally, cognitively and physically. Children must be three years old by 9/1/12 to enroll for the 2012-13 school year.
Parents’ Day Out Classes (9 AM-1 PM) are offered for children ages 10 months to three years. PDO was established to provide parents of young children time for themselves on a regular basis. Children participate in structured play in a safe and nurturing Christian environment one, two or three days per week. Opportunities are provided for children to learn beginning social skills while having fun. Children must be ten months old by 9/1/12 to enroll for the 2012-13 school year.

GREEN MINISTRIES Electronic Waste Event St. Luke's will host a community electronic waste recycling event on Saturday, January 7, 9AM-1PM at door #7. You may bring anything with a cord to be safely recycled by RecycleForce, Inc. Also bring Styrofoam packing (not peanuts). Indiana households, public schools and small businesses are no longer able to mix unwanted computer monitors, computers, televisions, printers, computer peripherals (such as keyboards and mice), DVD players, video cassette recorders or fax machines with municipal waste that is intended for disposal at a landfill or disposal by burning or incineration. More Than Four Tons The yellow and green Abitibi paper collection bins located at the east driveway of our campus are emptied twice a month. If we weigh in at over four tons a month, the Green Ministry earns a considerable amount of money to use on projects. Less than four tons earns a very small amount of money. Here is a simple way for you to help the environment and the Green Ministry—bring your newspapers, catalogs, junk mail and office paper (no corrugated board or cereal boxes). FYI—the blue recycling bins located in the NE corner of the back parking lot are for internal use only. Please do not bring your recycling from home to these bins.
Green Gratitude Award The Green Ministry wishes to thank Amy Barnes for her willingness to serve as the Chair of the Care for Creation Committee at the Conference level. Amy is working on bringing Green Ministries to all the Methodist Churches in the State of Indiana. Mission Possible Kids MP Kids kicks off its second semester for the 2011-12 school year on January 15. Don’t forget that we now meet the 3rd Sunday of each month in conjunction with Family Fun Night. A light dinner is served at 5PM, and then we are on a mission from God from 5:30-7PM in Fellowship Hall. If you are in grades 1 thru 5, please join us. The program empowers kids to change the world and our local communities through helping others. It is a hands-on program that gets kids excited about missions at an early age— such as supporting U.S. troops and making gifts for kids in need. MUSIC MINISTRIES St. Olaf Choir Concert If the ensemble of voices on Sunday mornings elates and inspires you, then you do not want to miss this special concert presented by one of the nation’s premier choral groups. The St. Olaf Choir, under the direction of Anton Armstrong, will perform at St. Luke’s on Monday, January 30 at 7:30PM. The choir celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, so we can expect a marvelous and uplifting evening with these talented singers. UMW Reading Group Our book selection for January will be Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese. The selection is lengthy but comes highly recommended by all who have read it. Verghese states that his ambition in writing the novel was to "tell a great story, an old-fashioned, truth-telling story." Sr. High Winter Ski Retreat in Kalamazoo, Michigan, February 17-19. This is one of our students' favorite events of the year! Cabins, campfires in the snow, and skiing! We will be staying at Pretty Lake Vacation Camp in Kalamazoo, Michigan in winterized/heated cabins. On Saturday, we will go skiing, snowboarding or snow tubing at Timber Ridge Ski Lodge close by. The weekend is packed with snow activities, cards, games, fellowship, worship... it's gonna be great!

MLK Day of Service Monday, January 16. This is a great opportunity to join IUPUI and the Indianapolis community in a day committed to community service in honor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. We will meet at the Lodge at 7:15AM, travel to a work site downtown, and do community service projects. Cost is $5 to help cover the cost of gas. Also, make sure you pack a sack lunch! Watch for sign ups on the St. Luke’s youth page on the church website. All Jr. High and Sr. High students (grades 6-12) and adult volunteers are welcome to join us.

Open Labyrinth Walk Walking a labyrinth is as simple as putting one foot in front of the other. There are no rules or special words, no dogma that you have to know or agree with. Come wanting a tool to help you slow down, focus, pray/meditate and listen for the still, small voice of the Divine. The path is unicursal- there is only one entrance/exit. There are no tricks or dead ends. Just stay on the path and you will reach the center. Reverse your steps on your journey out. Family Fellowship Night
“If one member suffers, all suffer together with it: if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it.” I CORINTHIANS 12:26 Grief is a journey that needs attention; it cannot go away without some hard work. Some people find being with a group of people who "get it" to be life-changing and life-saving in a positive way. Spending time with others in a group can even bring laughter and new friendships. You are invited to come once, or many times, to any group and see if the support of others can bring you comfort.
The third Sunday of every month is hereby decreed Family Fellowship Night at St. Luke’s! Join other families of our church at 5PM for a pizza dinner, followed by “Mission Possible Kids” for elementary-aged children, and parenting study groups for adults (childcare will be provided for children aged kindergarten and under). Come connect with other families and take time with other parents to reflect on the challenges and joys of parenthood.

This Sunday morning group always has fresh-brewed coffee, donuts and great discussion about hot topics and how our faith applies to them. All high school students, regardless of where they are on their faith journeys, are welcome to come to this honest and open discussion group.
Wake Up at the Big House 9:30-10:30AM in N103/104 in the main church building. This second Sr. High option will begin the fall meeting in the Lodge Café, then will split off to dig deeper into faith discus-sions about character, leadership and discipleship. Students who are hungry for further discussion are encouraged to give this group a shot and share their thoughts, ideas and questions.
Live! at the Lodge Sunday nights, 6-7:30PM. This is our Sunday evening youth group meeting for Sr. High students. LIVE! at the Lodge program is a big-group style meeting with plenty of opportunities to meet other students, engage in activities based on your interests, and break down les-
June 23-29, 2012: SENIOR HIGH Mission Trip to New Orleans This experience is open to all incoming 9-12th grade students and the graduating high school class of 2012. Cost is $550. We will be stopping at the National Civil Rights Museum and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. Students will learn about the American Civil Rights movement and how far our nation still has to go in racial and cultural reconciliation. Sign up on the St. Luke’s UMC website. July 15-21, 2012: JR. HIGH Mission Trip to Eastern Tennessee Open to incoming 7-9th grade students. Cost is $500/student. We will travel to the YouthWorks site in Newport, TN. The region is known for camping in the Smoky Mountains, hiking the Appalachian Trail, and the traditional Bluegrass music. Unfortunately, the town's remote location provides little job opportunity for residents, many of whom struggle with unemployment and poverty. Our students will be serving alongside the local residents as we minister through Kids Club and home improvement projects.
