The Hunger Games What Can We Learn about Ourselves and Our World? Sundays, June 3 & 10, 10:45AM-Noon, Luke’s Lodge. Across the nation, people are discussing The Hunger Games—the characters, the plot, the comparisons to historical events and science fiction movies/novels as well as the ethics of it all. What is it about this story that captures the interest of students and adults alike? What themes express the experiences of youth and young adults in today’s society that leaders need to pay attention to? What biblical parallels can be found within The Hunger Game trilogy that may surprise readers? Is our future as bleak as that of those in the book? What does hope look like for a different world we can help shape? Join with others of all generations as we explore the questions of life raised by author Suzanne Collins yet pondered by us all at one time or another. COFACILITATORS: Kevin Davis, Director of Youth Ministries, Stephanie Eft, Associate Director of Youth Ministries, and Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries.

CARE MINISTRIES Knitters Needed

Be a Stephen Minister

The prayer shawl ministry would love to have some more knitters. You are welcome to join them on Tuesdays at 1PM in the church conference room. Or knit from home. For more information or details about the shawl dimensions, please call Helen Vreisman at 439-6347.

Have you ever thought of becoming a Stephen Minister? Applications are available now in the West Passage and online. Training classes begin on Tuesday, September 4. Stephen Ministry is a wonderful way to grow in your faith by serving your fellow man. Stephen Ministers meet one-on-one with people in many difficult situations. Perhaps a person would just like someone to talk to while they recover from an illness, or parent young children, or make a new life after a divorce. You could be that supportive person. We invite you to pray about it. Maybe God is calling you to this service. If you have questions, contact Mary Katherine at 846-3404 x365 or schnitzm@stlukesumc.com.

June at The Track Our virtue for June is TRUST. This month we are going to take a look at what it means to trust God—both for the very first time and each day in the face of new circumstances. When we’re not sure what’s going to happen next, we can look back at all the ways that God has provided for us in the past—that makes it easier for us to respond to God like our monthly memory verse says to: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.” (MATTHEW 22:37-38)

June at the Mini-Track The kids will be learning “God made everything.” Their memory verse is “You made the world and everything in it.” (PSALMS 89:11) If Pre-K kids are able to recite the memory verse to the Small Group Leader, they get a special sticker for their Pit Pass.

Discounted Holiday World Tickets As you plan your summer vacation, remember to schedule a trip to Holiday World in Santa Claus, IN. They are again offering discounted tickets June 30-July 18. They are $32/ticket—a $13 savings. Holiday World donates $5 of every ticket sold to the Santa Claus Campground, which supports summer church camps for kids. This is the best discount offered at Holiday World. If you would like tickets or more information, contact Jennifer Hampton at 317399-6996 or jshampton515@gmail.com.

COMMUNITY MINISTRIES Fox Hill Elementary What a great year it's been serving in our community at Fox Hill Elementary. This mission is so valuable as we serve this school where more than 30% of the students are English as Second Language, and more than 50% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. The extra attention the students get via our tutoring and mentoring provide them with experiences and support that they would never get without this service. We pray that God will continue to work through all of the volunteers and enrich these wonderful students so that the gifts and talents that God blessed each of them with will be maximized. If this mission is aligned with your interests, please contact Tom Lange at tom.c.lange@gmail.com so that we can get you involved.

Outreach, Inc. – Homeless and At-Risk Youth May is a busy month for Outreach, Inc. and we have already begun planning for the annual BBQ Graduation party to recognize the achievements of our 21 high school graduates and GED students. This is an amazing accomplishment for our homeless and at-risk students. For many, it is the only recognition they will receive. We are asking for WalMart gift cards in the amount of $20 each to help make this a celebration our youth will always treasure. You may purchase the gift cards, or write a check payable to St. Luke’s UMC, noting “Outreach, Inc.” on the memo line. The BBQ Graduation Party will be held on Saturday, June 16 at Post Road Christian Church at 1112 N. Post Road, from 11AM– 1PM. Contact Outreach, Inc. at 317.951.8886 or www. outreachindiana.org, or contact Jackie Reed for further info regarding donations for our BBQ Grad Party at 317-3326550 or jsrmolar@sbcglobal.net.

SAWs (Servants at Work) Wheelchair Ramp Building Ministry Great news! We received an anonymous donation of $5,000 plus a second one for $1,000! These are wonderful as these funds will enable us to build many ramps for persons trapped in their houses. Last summer we built a ramp for a woman who had been trapped inside for three years, except when the EMTs arrived to get her to medical appointments. Requests for ramps have been coming in at two per day. We always look forward to new volunteers. Most Saturdays we are constructing ramps around the city. Please contact Paul Snyder, Lay leader Construction Ministry, Psnyder1@indy.rr.com or 317-695-0585.

FAMILY MINISTRIES Take the “Can’t Wait Date” Challenge! Attention couples! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to have more fun more often as a couple. To help you do this, St. Luke’s Couples, Inc. is issuing a challenge for you to go on ONE date each of the next four months. Each month you will be emailed a .pdf file with a “challenge” date. Each suggested date will include off-beat dining ideas, fun “dares” for each other, and great questions to prompt conversations about your relationship. You can also access the dates at www.stlukesumc.com/ministries/ family/couples and invite other couples to take the challenge with you!

Our promise to you: These dates will work on any budget. You can even order pizza and a Redbox movie! They will require little preparation; the hardest part about planning the date is marking the time on your calendar. They’re not just about “solving issues” in your relationship. Yes, there are discussion starters, but they’re fun and positive. By filling out the form on the Couples, Inc. page, which will provide us with your email, you are committing with your spouse to prioritize one date night each of the next four months. Then be on the look-out for the date suggestions, and have FUN!

The Indiana Conference Mission and Advocacy Team, the West District, and Gobin UMC in Greencastle are sponsoring an Imagine NO Malaria "Change the World" 5K Run/Walk/Stroll on the Downtown Canal in Indianapolis, Thursday, June 7 from 7-11AM. All are welcome to join the event immediately before the Indiana Annual Conference to benefit Imagine NO Malaria, which fights malaria around the world with bed nets, spray, education, testing and treatment. Because of the efforts in the last few years, the rate of children dying from malaria has dropped from 1 every 30 seconds to 1 every 60 seconds. Good, but not good enough. To support Imagine NO Malaria and join the fun, learn more and register at www.inumc.org/pages/detail/1143 then Events Related to Annual Conference. Questions may be directed to Ann Newton at annknewton@cinergymetro.net. More information about the campaign is found at www.imaginenomalaria.org.

Radon Information Opportunity

Keep Paper/Magazines/Catalogs Coming!

For non-smokers, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer. Looking at a US map showing where high levels of radon gas exist on a state-by-state basis, Indiana ranks high. One house can have it; next door might not. Folks who live in houses or condos built on slabs should be radon tested, as well as those with crawl spaces and basements. Testing is free for all homeowners. Donna Kueber, Senior Indoor Air Specialist for Marion County Health Department, will share information at a table in the West Passage and at a presentation in the Parlor, 11AM-Noon, Sunday, June 24.

The green and yellow Abitibi bins at the east driveway accept white and colored paper, junk mail, magazines, newspaper and catalogs. No cardboard or corrugated board. You deposited over four tons in January and St. Luke’s earned $72.60, but since then because we didn’t reach four tons each month, we have only earned about $15 per month. Please help St. Luke’s Green Ministry by bringing your paper from home and office.

E-Waste Recycling

Energy Audit Project Goal Is 400 Homes

Anything with a plug can be dropped off anytime at the Recycling Center in Central Passage. Our next RecycleForce e-waste event will be on Servant Day, August 4.

Perhaps you received an invitation from your energy company to have an energy audit of your home. As part of a year-long special incentive program, if you register for the audit through St. Luke’s Green Ministry, St. Luke’s will receive $25 to be used in special “green” St. Luke’s projects. You will get an audit and lots of freebies. There is no pressure to buy anything. There are forms in the Main Office. Please place completed forms in Betty Brandt’s mailbox or contact Sharon Chambers at sharon.chambers39 @comcast.net. Help the Green Ministry take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.

Green Gratitude The Green Ministry wishes to thank Fletcher Place volunteer Steve King. He cooks and serves meals at Fletcher Place, and in the process washes and recycles the huge cans from the green beans here at church and then sets up a recycle bag down at Fletcher Place for the juice jugs and applesauce containers.

HEALTH MINISTRY What Did You Say? If you find yourself saying that more frequently than you used to, then stop by the Free Hearing Screening on Sunday, June 3 from 9-11AM in C110. Hearing loss is one of the most common chronic health care problems facing older adults. More than 55 million Americans are estimated to suffer from hearing loss, and 80% of that group is undiagnosed or untreated. As our population continues to age, the problem of hearing loss continues to grow. Recent studies show that up to 50% of Baby Boomers are experiencing significant hearing loss as much as 20 years earlier in life than prior generations. What about you? Have your hearing checked for free, courtesy of St. Luke’s Health Ministry.

LATER@ST. LUKE’S Later@St. Luke’s is a dynamic and innovative multicultural worship service that is open to everyone. Imagine a place where God is seen and heard through expressions of movement, media and music—come worship at Later@St. Luke’s on Sunday evenings at 6PM in Robertson Chapel. Hear contemporary Christian, gospel and jazz music featuring the Later Band and Vocals, along with a challenging and thoughtprovoking message. Holy Communion is served every Sunday, along with light refreshments before and after the worship service.

JUNE SERMON SERIES: “A Church on Fire” Join us as we celebrate Pentecost. It is the great festival that marks the birth of the Christian church by the power of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost means "fiftieth day" and is celebrated 50 days after Easter. After Jesus ascended into heaven following his resurrection, there was a gathering in Jerusalem for the Jewish harvest festival that was celebrated on the fiftieth day after Passover. While they were there praying, a sound like that of a rushing wind filled the house and tongues of fire descended and rested over each of their heads. This was the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Come and enjoy our June Sermon Series entitled “A Church On Fire!”

YOUNG ADULT COMMUNITY Missio Dei Outreach Projects

Who doesn’t like sitting on the back porch, chatting it up with friends, and relaxing in the sun with good food? Every month from May till August we’ll be gathering together for some backyard cookouts at various locations and dates. They’ll be a different Sunday each month at 1PM and will be listed on our Facebook page as well as on the YAC web page. Make sure to take some time and check out when the next one we’ll be and we’ll see you there! If you have any questions, email Chris at thornsberryc@stlukesumc.com.

Missio Dei is Latin for “The Mission of God,” and that’s what our missions outreach group of our Young Adult Community is all about. Jesus knew that in order to connect with people and share the message of God’s love that he had to be willing to serve them. Missio Dei projects give you the opportunity to share that same message by serving others in the greater Indianapolis community. We have three ongoing projects that we could use help with: 1. Refugee Assistance in the Nora community; 2. Delivering food for Second Helpings; 3. Habitat for Humanity assistance. If you’re interested in any of these projects, contact Chris at thornsberryc@stlukesumc.com.

Summer List of Fun This summer we’ll be heading to local and regional events for lots of fun, food and fellowship. We’ll be posting the different events on Facebook and the YAC web page for you to take a look at and sign up to participate in starting in June. There will also be a place for you to share some of the events you’d like to be a part of by filling out a survey on our webpage. For more information, email Chris at thornsberryc@stlukesumc.com.

Stay Connected We send out our email the first week of each month that includes information about everything we’re doing for that particular month. From small groups to fellowships to mission projects, it’s all in one place. If you’d like to receive our monthly email, contact Chris Thornsberry at thornsberryc@stlukesumc. com. Also, find us on Facebook at St. Luke’s UMC-Young Adult Community.

Youth Ministry Summer Overview During the summer months when many of our students are out of school, students are at camps, families are on vacations, and we are on mission trips, our youth ministry relaxes a little from our normal schedule. Even though our ministry schedule changes, we find that it’s a great time for students to have the option of connecting to youth ministry in a more personal, intentional way and can check out our groups. Incoming sixth grade students are welcome in our Jr. High ministry. Incoming freshmen have the option of continuing throughout the summer in Jr. High or checking out the high school options. August 12 is the first Sunday where Freshmen will need to transition fully to Sr. High. GRIEF MINISTRIES Grief is a journey that needs attention; it cannot go away without some hard work. Some people find being with a group of people who “get it” to be life-changing and life-saving in a positive way. Spending time with others in a group can even bring laughter and new friendships. You are invited to come once, or many times, to any group and see if the support of others can bring you comfort.

WEEKLY SR.HIGH OFFERINGS (9-12th grade) We continue to meet on Sunday mornings at 9:30AM, but take a slightly different focus. Rather than working our way through a book of the Bible or lesson series, we jump into fun discussion topics like miracles, movies, current events and pop culture. With each of these, we look into what our faith has to say about them and how we can live in a way that engages the world but honors God.
