MONTHLY

COMMUNION Endowment Sunday On Sunday, April 25, St. Luke’s will welcome Reverend William G. Enright, Ph.D. to the pulpit during all three morning services to deliver an inspiring message to our congregation. Dr. Enright is the Executive Director of the Lake Institute on Faith & Giving at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, and former Senior Pastor of Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis. St. Luke’s Endowment was founded over 20 years ago by members who had the vision and passion for securing our church’s future for generations to come. Over the years, the Endowment has helped build and sustain programs such as: The Garden, Staff Parish Fund, Sowers Fund, Deaf Camp Fund, Carillon Fund, Christmas Fund, and the Jean Bepko Children’s Resource Fund. In addition, the Christian Life Scholarship Fund has awarded thousands of dollars in college scholarship support to youth members who have demonstrated a passion for their faith and their willingness to help make a difference in the lives of others. If you would like to learn more about the St. Luke’s Endowment and how you can use your faith to create a legacy, stop by the Endowment tables in the East and West Passages on April 25 to pick up some materials and speak with a committee member.

Turn the World Upside Down TIME—Together in Ministry Everyday

April 18 - May 30 We are surrounded by many modern examples of PROPHETS. Women and men, children and youth, who by words, actions, silent prayers and service, challenge systems of injustice and inequity. They have become, in a myriad of ways, the very VOICE, HANDS, and HEART of God in our world. During the TIME Series “Turn the World Upside Down” we’ll have the opportunity to learn more stories of these change-agents, from the famous to the unknown, and consider ways that we, too, can personally step out in faith to make a real difference. We all have opportunities to change our world. We’ve been in Spring Training; now’s the TIME to launch out and love our community with every possibility of grace, peace, and justice. Look through the April 2010 Communion for the globe logo to find opportunities in many program areas that may inspire you to “Turn the World Upside Down.”

Carrie Newcomer in Concert–“Before and After” Carrie is near and dear to the St. Luke’s community and she returns to us on April 23 at 7PM in the Sanctuary to share her new CD, “Before and After.” Tickets are $16 in advance (available now at www.stlukesumc.com) and $18 at the door. Café Conversations

The Prophets:

Wednesdays, April 7–May 19 , 9:30-11AM IN E105 The book The Jesus I Never Knew is an attempt to present an unbiased, facts-only look at the person of Jesus Christ. Yancey, the book's author, studies various aspects of Jesus' life including his birth, the message he came to bring, and the reasons behind his death, resurrection and ascension. Several times during the course of the book, Yancey asks himself if he had been alive during the time Jesus lived, would he have believed the message Jesus brought? The book is available for purchase in the Oasis bookstore. Led by Dr. Marion Miller.

Voices of Hope, Peace, and Social Justice Tuesdays, April 13–May 18, 7-8:30PM in E105 Pre-registration recommended; childcare available upon request. The prophets of Israel have inspired readers of the Bible throughout the centuries with their call for social justice and compassion. They uplifted the religious vision that what God demands first and foremost is for us to reach out to our fellow human beings. The prophets shone a piercing light on what they considered to be hypocritical, insincere religion. Finally, they gave us the messianic vision of a future of hope and peace when God would redeem the world. Led by Rabbi Arnold Bienstock, Adjunct Professor, Butler University, Department of Philosophy & Religion.

Voices of Change Sundays, April 11–May 16 (no 5/9), 11AM-Noon in the Parlor As our faith community focuses on this spring’s T.I.M.E. theme–Turn the World Upside Down–we will examine the work of change-agents and out-of-the-box thinkers within the United States and the world, of another era as well as today. Join us as we review the life and work of Nelson Mandela, Marian Wright Edelman, Charles Darwin, and Bono. Be sure to hear the stories of children and youth changing the world today through the contributions of Later@ St.Luke’s Mission Possible Kids and A Girl’s Gift. Coordinated by Terri Coe.

Hope in the Midst of Loss Thursdays, April 8–May 13, 7-9PM in N101-102 Pre-registration required; class limited to 20 participants. Childcare available upon request. Everyone experiences loss, whether it’s the breakup of a relationship, the loss of a job, a divorce, the loss of a home, a death, or some other loss . . . but not everyone experiences hope when they are dealing with a loss. This class is designed to help you experience hope in the midst of loss! It will provide insights that will enable you to understand a) your own attachments, b) the breaks that have taken place in your attachments (that is, your losses), and 3) the resources you have to get you through them. It is led by Dr. Adolf Hansen, our Theologian in Residence, who is the author of Responding to Loss: A Resource for Caregivers, a book that is the text for this class (available through our bookstore).

Women’s Bible Study Wednesdays, April 7–May 12, 1-2:30PM inE105 PILLARS OF FAITH—This series explores the factors which shaped the face of Christianity. It provides a powerful record of those who changed our world by their faith. In the several-hundred year period after the crucifixion of Christ, his followers were an often-persecuted band of believers. We’ll discuss the contributions of the desert fathers, St. Patrick and St. Brigid, Joan of Arc, Archbishop Romero and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, to name a few. Their stories are testaments to the depth of their convictions. Led by Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries.

Join New Life Circle on Tuesday, April 20, at 7PM in the Spiritual Life Center for “Have a Little Faith” with Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries. Have a Little Faith is Mitch Albom’s first non-fiction book since Tuesdays with Morrie. It begins with an unusual request: an 82-year-old rabbi from Albom’s old hometown asks him to deliver his eulogy. Feeling unworthy, Albom insists on understanding the man better, which throws him back into a world of faith he’d left years ago. Have a Little Faith is a book about a life’s purpose; about losing belief and finding it again; about the divine spark inside us all. It is one man’s journey, but it is everyone’s story! Come for a lively conversation about how faith can transform your life. An evening of fun, fellowship and discovery awaits you. For additional information, call Nancy at 255-1226 or Cathy at 334-7821. New Life Circle is a gathering of single, divorced, and widowed women of all ages.
