Whose Birthday Is It? Again in 2010, St. Luke’s will be asking the congregation to think about giving to those in need in addition to those gifts we give our own loved ones. “Whose Birthday Is It?” asks us to remember the reason we give gifts at Christmas and to give in the spirit of Jesus. The following groups are being supported by St. Luke’s Outreach Ministries this holiday season: Fletcher Place Christmas Shopping, Fox Hill Elementary School, Heifer International, Mitten Tree, Outreach, Inc., Water for Life and United Christmas Service. A general gift may be given to support all these ministry areas. Look for the “Whose Birthday Is It?” brochure in the pew or at the Information Desk, complete the form and drop in the collection basket or the main office. Your gift may be in the form of a financial donation or a specific item/ items and you may give a gift in someone’s honor. For more information, contact Jayne Thorne at thornej@stlukesumc.com.

Café Conversations Wednesdays thru December 15, 9:30-11AM in E105. The Bible: A Biography (Books that Change the World) by Karen Armstrong. As the single work at the heart of Christianity, the world’s largest organized religion, the Bible is the spiritual guide for one out of every three people in the world. It is also the world’s most widely distributed book and is best-selling, with an estimated six billion copies sold in the last two hundred years. Acclaimed historian Karen Armstrong analyzes the social and political situation in which oral history turned into written scripture, how this all-pervasive scripture was collected into one work, how it became accepted as Christianity’s sacred text, and how its interpretation changed over time. Armstrong’s history of the Bible is a brilliant, captivating book, crucial in an age of declining faith and rising fundamentalism. All are welcome to join Dr. Marion Miller, St. Luke’s Associate Pastor, as she leads class discussion.

Women’s Bible Study
Yes, No, or Another Alternative?
Wednesdays thru December 15, 1-2:30PM in E105. Poetic, troubling, strange, unorthodox, courageous—all these words (and more!) describe the Old Testament book Ecclesiastes. We’ll explore the topics of vanity and meaning, wisdom and folly, wealth and poverty, toil and pleasure, as well as life and death. What did life mean all those centuries ago? What does it mean today? Wednesdays, January 12- March 2, 1-2:30PM in E105. Prayers of the New Testament—study various prayers in the New Testament that contain beautiful language and deep thoughts, evoking God’s character and attributes with rich metaphors and powerful images. Grow in your own prayer life by studying the prayers of Mary, Simeon, Anna, Jesus, Peter, Paul, and John. Facilitated by Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries.
Sundays, December 5, 12 & 19, 11AM-Noon, Parlor. During Advent and Christmas certain questions arise that are often not examined in detail in sermons and other educational settings. Three of those questions are: 1) Prophecies? 2) Angels? 3) Virgin Birth? They are embedded in the birth story of Jesus found in Matthew 1:18-25. They can each be answered by “yes, no, or another alternative.” Join Dr. Adolf Hansen, our Theologian in Residence, as he leads a provocative discussion of these questions, one that will leave room for your views as well as his own.
WOMEN’S ADVENT LUNCHEON & STUDY:
Christmas Gifts that Won’t Break Thursdays, December 2, 9 & 16. Lunch: 11:30-Noon; Discussion: Noon-1PM, Parlor. Pre-registration is recommended; cost is $25 for lunch and materials. Childcare available upon request. Do you experience stress and sometimes feel overwhelmed during the holidays? It can be easy to forget what we celebrate at Christmas. Take some time to slow down and join us for a peaceful interlude this Advent as women of all ages come together to reflect on the unbreakable gifts that God has given us: hope, love, joy and peace. We will remember God’s greatest gift, who came to us as a baby and leads us through all the days of our lives. Led by Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries, Caitlin Drouin and Jennifer Todd, St. Luke’s members.
“Parents who were devoted to volunteerism and attended weekly worship with their children were correlated with having teens who were 40% less likely to be sexually active compared to the national average.”
Adult Education Information Table Sunday, January 9, 9AM-12:30PM, West Hallway by Parlor Visit with key leaders of the Adult Education committee to see what personal growth/spiritual formation experiences and class offerings are available this winter as well as for the 2011 Lenten season. Free handouts include suggestions for enhancing personal devotions. Pre-register for the various opportunities of interest to you.

WINNER’S CIRCLE: Sunday mornings are filled with high en-
ergy fun starting at 9:30AM in Robertson Chapel for elementary aged children (1st-5th). Our Sunday morning curriculum is virtue based. We believe a virtue is something God is doing in us to help change the world around us. December’s virtue is Joy—finding a way to be happy, even when things don’t go your way. Our Memory Verse is: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” Philippians 4:4, NIV DECEMBER 26: There will be no Sunday School on December 26. Family Fuel
The Mitten Tree Is Back!
If you are seeking an opportunity to be able to worship with your children, come to Family Fuel on Sunday mornings at 10:45AM in the Great Hall. This worship service is geared for kids with an emphasis on parents learning with them. Join Cammy, Mrs. F, Sam, Vinny, Grandpa Henry, Mitchell and the rest of the clubhouse gang who will help you learn why following God is always better than doing what you think is right. There is great music, lots of laughter and yes, donuts! We will not have Family Fuel on December 26; instead, bring the family to the Sanctuary to see what Pastors Dave and Jamalyn have in store.
The Track will be collecting hats, mittens/gloves, scarves, socks and new underwear. All items collected will benefit Christamore House. Items can be placed on or under the Mitten Tree located in the Track (East Passage) and outside Robertson Chapel. Items will be collected through December 5.
What if I am an 11:00 attendee?? If your family normally attends 11AM worship, we ask that you bring your child to the Great Hall at 10:45. You are welcome to stay with them until worship begins at 11:00, or stay until 11:30 when your child will go to Small group after Family Fuel ends and you can go to worship to hear the sermon. If you are not able to come at 10:45, you can still bring your child to the Great Hall at 11:00 and there will be someone who can take him or her in and get them settled. The service is very laid back and we want to be flexible to your family’s needs.
4th and 5th grade Fellowship Friday, December 17 is the Christmas Celebration for all 4th and 5th graders. Join us at Pastor Jamalyn and Dave’s house for a Christmas Exchange, Christmas movies and other Christmas activities. We will gather at 3224 Citadel Ct. from 6:30-8:30PM. Please bring $4 for the meal and a $5 Christmas Exchange gift. If you need directions please contact Jamalyn at williamsonj@stlukesumc.com. If you have not already registered your child, please do so at www.stlukesumc.com under children’s ministry. If you have, then you only need to email thetrack@stlukesumc.com and let us know your child will attend. Also, we are in need of some parent volunteers, so if you can stay, please let us know that too.

UNITED METHODIST MEN Theology Unplugged
Men's Breakfast
A monthly opportunity for men to gather and share about life and faith in a more relaxed atmosphere. Our next meeting is December 15, 8:30PM at the Rusty Bucket (1130 W. 86th St.), and our topic will be "Mr. Mom." For the past 50 years or so, our culture has encouraged men to get more in touch with their "feminine" side—to be more sensitive, aware of their feelings and responsive to others. Meanwhile, the feminist movement has encouraged women to break out of traditional domestic roles and claim strength and leadership gifts. While this has been a good thing in many respects, one negative result has been confusion with gender roles. In today's culture, what does it mean to be a man? What separates men from women? How might it help our lives/families if we embraced the different ways God made us? To join the conversation, please RSVP to Matt Roop at mroop@capcityfence.com or 538-5931.
The St. Luke's United Methodist Men's monthly breakfast will be at 8AM on Saturday, December 4 and January 8 in Fellowship Hall. We offer a hearty breakfast, fellowship, sharing and an interesting program. Come join us for fellowship and entertainment. Please call Jim Thorne at 255-8562 to RSVP. This will assist in planning and allow for the correct amount of food.
United Methodist Men New Year Kick Off Please join us for the New Year kickoff event for St. Luke's United Methodist Men (SLUMM). We will take an opportunity to review all the great programs we had in 2010 and will take a look forward to 2011. If you’ve ever had a question about what SLUMM has to offer, this is the event for you, January 20 at 6:30PM in Fellowship Hall.
