MONTHLY
COMMUNION UMW Book Drive IT’S GOING TO BE
The Interfaith Hunger Initiative has cooked up an idea for participants congregation-wide. “One A-Maize-Ing Lunch” will take place on Sunday, February 27 in Great Hall. Two dozen communities of worship are each preparing a basic meal of maize and beans, similar to what a child in Kenya receives each day for lunch. This meal will be prepared and shared by us as a reminder of our own blessings. All can attend for free, but we encourage donations to help support our work with HIV/AIDS-affected students in Kenya through the Global Interfaith Partnership. The Interfaith Hunger Initiative believes that if we come together we can end hunger in our time, and that working together across faith lines on an important project strengthens our community. At 11AM, we will collaborate with Family Fuel to share a meal and a second “seating” will take place at Noon. Special guests will help us learn more about our brothers and sisters in Kenya.
St. Luke’s United Methodist Women will be collecting new and gently used books for the Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home during the month of February. Collection boxes marked “Books for IUMCH” will be located in the north and south ends of the West Passage. The youth (K-12) at Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home love to read. Following are specific titles they are in need of: Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series, Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins (Hunger Games, Catching Fire, Mockingjay, The Underland Chronicles), Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare (City of Bones, Ashes, Glass, Fallen Angles), James Patterson’s The Gift, Witch and Wizard, Demons and Druids, Watch the Skies and The Dangerous Days of Daniel X, and Laura Numeroff’s Series including If You Give a Pig a Pancake, etc. Pick up the complete list of books at the information desk. March is National Reading Month. Let’s give the IUMCH a great one! Need info? Please contact Regan Summers at regansummers@hotmail.com.

BIBLICAL STUDIES
Women’s Bible Study Wednesdays, now-March 2, 1-2:30PM in E105. Prayers of the New Testament—study various prayers in the New Testament that contain beautiful language and deep thoughts, evoking God’s character and attributes with rich metaphors and powerful images. Grow in your own prayer life by studying the prayers of Mary, Simeon, Anna, Jesus, Peter, Paul and John. ••• The Cross, March 9-April 13. During this Lenten season we will study the cross: the importance of the cross within Christianity, the various shapes of the crosses and their meaning; and, finally, what it means to live in the “shadow” of the cross. Both sessions led by Terri Coe.
The Humor of Christ Tuesdays, March 8, 15, 22, and 29, 7-8:30PM in E105. Registration helpful. Childcare available upon request. Dr. Elton Trueblood challenges the stereotype of a somber, gloomy Jesus—a Jesus who never laughed or smiled. He suggests three particular ways in which Christ's humor is used, first, in controversy, second, in parables, and third, in a short dialogue. Consider ways we use humor to make a point in our conversations. Examine as many as 30 scripture passages Trueblood believes, when seen in the light of humor, illuminates certain parables and brief sayings of Jesus. Led by Terri Coe.

Classes will take place in different areas of the church so as to familiarize participants with the many creative opportunities and spaces at St. Luke’s. Thursdays, March 10-April14, 7-8:30PM in E105. Registration recommended. Childcare available upon request. Have you ever wondered about the different ways Jesus is described by Christians? This study is intended to provide a setting in which your questions can be looked at from at least two different perspectives. Marcus Borg is a New Testament scholar and author of books suggesting new and emerging ways of being Christian. N.T. Wright, also a New Testament scholar, is a prominent proponent of earlier more traditional ways of being Christian. Led by Dr. Bruce Roberts, retired, Christian Theological Seminary.
SUNDAY MORNING CLASSES
Conversations Around the Scripture
BOOK STUDIES
Sundays, now thru April 10, 9:3010:30AM in E105. Do you feel like something is missing from your life? Are you looking for consistency in your study of the Bible or prayer life? If yes, consider joining us as we explore the biblical message and discuss how to apply it to daily living. Beginning with a focus on a particular passage of scripture, we’ll discuss how the message of these verses impacts personal, family, church, and community concerns. This winter’s theme is “Assuring Hope” with sub-topics of “Comfort for God’s People,” “A Future for God’s People,” and, “Jesus, the Promised Servant-Leader.” While connected by theme, each week’s lesson stands alone. Led by Terri Coe, Kathy Mayberry, Molly & Brian Earnhart, and Craig Overmyer, St. Luke’s Members.
Café Conversations: Lost Christianities— The Battle for Scripture and the Faiths We Never Knew Wednesdays, 9:30–11AM in E105. What if Marcion’s canon (which consisted only of Luke’s Gospel and Paul’s letters, entirely omitting the Old Testament) had become Christianity’s canon? What if the Ebionites (who believed Jesus was completely human and not divine) had ruled the day as the Orthodox Christian party? What if various early Christian writings, such as the Gospel of Thomas or the Secret Gospel of Mark, had been allowed into the canonical New Testament? Bart Ehrman, a professor of religion at UNC Chapel Hill, offers answers to these and other questions in this book, which rehearses the now-familiar story of the tremendous diversity of early Christianity. He eloquently characterizes some of the movements and scriptures that were lost as he outlines the many strands of Christianity that competed for attention in the second and third centuries. Led by Dr. Marion Miller. Book available in Oasis Bookstore.
Reading the Bible Again for the First Time Mondays, February 7, 14 & 21, 7-8:30PM in E105. Preregistration recommended. Childcare available upon request. Reading the Bible Again for the First Time provides a much- needed solution to the problem of how to have a fully authentic yet contemporary understanding of the scriptures. Acclaimed author Marcus Borg reveals how it is possible to reconcile the Bible with both a scientific and critical way of thinking and our deepest spiritual needs, leading to a contemporary yet grounded experience of the sacred texts. Borg traces his personal spiritual journey, describing for readers how he moved from an unquestioning childhood belief in the biblical stories to a more powerful and dynamic relationship with the Bible as a sacred text brimming with meaning and guidance. Join with others who seek to learn how the Biblical message can be relevant in this 21st century. Led by Fletcher Graham, St. Luke’s Member. Book available in Oasis Bookstore.
SHORT-TERM
A Faith of Our Own: Naming What You Really Believe Sundays, February 6, 13, & 20, 9:30-10:30AM in E212. Preregistration recommended. What we believe evolves in response to insights into the Bible, to questions or doubts we face, to changes in life circumstances, or to things that happen in the larger world. This class is designed to help define and articulate one’s personal beliefs in a consistent way. Guest teacher Dr. Ron Allen, Professor of Preaching/ New Testament, Christian Theological Seminary, will outline the most common ways a certain topic is understood in the Bible. He will identify the ways the church has interpreted the topic as well as introduce contemporary perspectives on each topic. Book available in Oasis Bookstore.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES
Too Much Texting Leads to Risky Behaviors, Study Finds Teenagers who send more than 120 text messages per school day are 84% more likely to have used illegal drugs, were almost twice as likely to have been in a physical fight, and were far more likely to have engaged in a variety of “risky behaviors” such as smoking and binge drinking, according to a new study from Case Western Reserve University. “The startling results of this study suggest that, when left unchecked, texting and other widely popular methods of staying connected are associated with unhealthy behaviors among teenagers,” says Scott Frank, lead researcher on the study. “This may be a wake-up call for parents to open a dialogue with their kids about the extent of texting and social networking they are involved with and about what is happening in the rest of their lives.” Frank admits that the data doesn’t indicate that social networking is a direct cause of risky behavior, only that there is a clear overlap. So while some sort of relationship exists, the nature of it remains murky.

UNITED METHODIST MEN Men’s Breakfast
Marriage Enrichment Weekend
All men are invited to the United Methodist Men’s monthly breakfast on Saturday, February 5 and March 5 at 8AM. We offer a hearty breakfast, fellowship, sharing and an interesting program.
March 4-6, 2011
Theology Unplugged "Women are from Venus, Men are from Mars"—or so the popular saying goes. The idea is that we men are brutes when it comes to love, and it's true that we often feel that women are the "experts" at relationships, or that expressing our feelings somehow makes us less "manly." Perhaps we gear up once a year for Valentine's Day—we buy a card with some pretty words, perhaps some chocolates and flowers, and we feel we've done our duty. But how do we keep romance alive in our relationships the rest of the year? What would it look like to truly love from our hearts? And what are those things that dampen or extinguish the fire in our hearts? Join us at the Rusty Bucket (1130 W. 86th St.) at 8:30PM on Wednesday, February 22 as we discuss these and other questions about the "battlefield" of love. RSVP to Matt Roop at mroop@capcityfence.com or 538-5931.
St. Luke’s United Methodist Men are sponsoring ME #4 at the Artist Colony in Nashville, Indiana. Marriage Enrichment uses worship, small-group experiences and private communication exercises to help married couples improve their communication skills, focusing on the positive values in their relationships and privately exploring the changes they desire in their relationship. Leaders who are extensively trained according to the certification requirements of Marriage Enrichment Inc., a non-denominational, not-for-profit, nationwide Christian organization, will facilitate the weekend. Every couple—regardless of the number of years married or faith background—can benefit richly. It’s for couples who want better communication skills whether newlywed, remarried, retired, grandparents, without children, raising children and teenagers or in blended families. The price is $300 per couple and includes program materials, meals and hotel accommodations. The program begins at 7PM on Friday, March 4 and ends at 1PM on Sunday March 6. Please contact Tom Hadley 809-9991 or thadley10@yahoo.com for registration information.
UNITED METHODIST WOMEN UMW Reading Group
Food Pantry Drive
This month we will be looking at Haiti through the words and experiences of Haitian author Edwidge Danticat and American missionary Margaret Trost. We will be reading and discussing two selections: the first, Krik Krak, (a finalist for the National Book Award) is a collection of short stories by Ms. Danticat detailing daily life under dictatorship in Haiti; the second, On That Day Everyone Ate: One Woman's Story of Hope and Possibility in Haiti, is an account of Ms. Trost's efforts to pioneer a feeding program for those living in poverty in Haiti. Both accounts will give us insight into the extreme poverty and oppression experienced by the Haitian peoples, particularly women, but also their warmth, strength and resilience. We will meet on Monday, February 28 from 7-8:30PM in the Parlor. Newcomers and one-time visitors are always welcome! For information, contact Jennifer Todd at jtoddosu@aol.com.
The St. Luke’s UMW Semi-annual Food Drive will take place in March. Four local food pantries benefit from our drive, including Brightwood Community Center, First Baptist Church Food Pantry, Fletcher Place Community Center, and Vida Nueva Hispanic Ministries Food Pantry. Grocery bags with shopping lists will be distributed to the congregation on Sunday, February 27. Shopping lists of most sought-after items will also be available in March at the information desk and online at www.stlukesumc.com. Monetary donations can be made to St. Luke’s UMW with “food pantry” on the memo line. Food donations will be collected in the two wooden bins in the East Passage throughout the month of March. Questions, contact Beth Edwards-Goff at 625-2395 or beth.edwardsgoff@yahoo.com

Race for the Cure
The UMW cookbook is still available for purchase in the main office during regular business hours. The cookbook contains over 500 recipes generously donated by members of the congregation, family and friends. It costs $15 and the proceeds benefit various UMW-sponsored organizations.
