Celebration T.I.M.E.! Pathways Together:

In conjunction with the July 31-August 28 worship focus, we will be celebrating St. Luke’s identity of being an “open community of Christians gathering to seek, celebrate, live, and share the love of God for all creation” where we are Together In Ministry Everyday! The fifth anniversary of this all-church initiative has something for everyone. During July and August, there will be Community Gatherings hosted by members of the congregation, as well as a Video Booth set up to tell your T.I.M.E. story—share your “everyday ministry” experiences. See the T.I.M.E. Fifth Anniversary section inside this issue for all the scoop... beginning with Ice Cream Sunday on Sunday, July 31 where you can “get the scoop” on our Mission Statement and T.I.M.E. program.

MONTHLY

COMMUNION “journeys” July/August Worship Theme This spring, a Worship Planning Team met to implement a meaningful program of worship for July and August. Led by Interim Senior Pastor Linda McCoy, the team decided that the theme of “Journeys” was appropriate for this time of transition at St. Luke’s. First we will focus on “Spiritual Roads”—the journeys that have led each of us to where we are now. The preaching schedule is: JULY 3: Dr. Carver McGriff, Senior Pastor

of St. Luke’s from 1967-1993 JULY 10: Bishop Michael Coyner JULY 17: Dr. Linda McCoy JULY 24: Rev. David Williamson Next we will explore the “Pathways Together” that we have taken as a faith community. The sermons will revolve around our identity of being an “Open community of Christians gathering to seek, celebrate, live and share the love of God for all creation.” JULY 31: Dr. Linda McCoy “open community” AUGUST 7: Rev. Marsha Hutchinson “seek” AUGUST 14: Dr. Linda McCoy “celebrate” AUGUST 21: Rev. Phil Gulley “live”

(Quaker pastor and author) AUGUST 28: Rev. David Williamson “share”

You’ll notice some changes in the worship as well this summer. There will be more use of video, fewer announcements, some familiar elements moved around a bit. Don’t worry—it will still look and feel like St. Luke’s. Excellent music, inspiring preaching, and donuts. We look forward to being in worship with you this summer as we journey together toward the bright future of always being transformed by God and transforming the world into a compassionate, just, inclusive, Christlike community. COMMUNITY MINISTRIES Fox Hill Elementary School Partnership

Refugee Assistance Ministry

As part of Senator Richard Lugar’s Summer Food Service Program, M.S.D. Washington Township will distribute meals to our students during the summer months. Meals will be assembled in a central location and transported to the local complexes where our students reside. Another focus is to provide mentors to encourage refugee teens/young adults in completing their high school diploma or equivalent at North Central High School. The time commitments are flexible. To volunteer or to learn more, contact Cathy Kennedy, 317-418-5869 or jaycathy@aol.com.

We completed 73 construction projects to help families in 2010 and hope to increase that number to 100 in 2011. Come help us help others in our own backyard. For more information, contact Dave Boyer tbucket2@sbcglobal.net or 251-1094 or Tara Lineweaver at tgline@sbcglobal.net or 329-9189.

The Washington Township Middle Schools’ Orchestra Program has an urgent need for violins and violas to accommodate a large group of needy refugee children wishing to participate in orchestra classes this fall. Repair funds are available while instrument purchase funding is not. If you have a violin or viola that could be donated to the schools, please contact Carol Dennis at 317-2591978 or clrfdennis@aol.com.

Discernment and Discovery is a workshop that offers techniques for finding clarity, skills for mining for answers, ways to open to guidance through nature, collage, playful chatter, imagination and journaling. These techniques will be taught and practiced with the idea that you can return to them again and again for answers and insights. Bring a sack lunch and a journal. UNITED METHODIST WOMEN UMW Reading Group This month we'll explore the adventurous life of a woman who leaves city life for the open land of Wyoming in our discussion of Letters of a Woman Homesteader by Elinore Pruitt Stewart. This gem of a book consists of letters written by the author back east to her former employer. Elinore Pruitt Stewart was a young widowed mother who leaves city life and her position as a laundress and heads west to Wyoming to take up a lifestyle living on the land as a homesteader in the 1900s—and we think we have tough lives! Elinor writes with enthusiasm and entertaining description about the challenges of survival and the support among homesteaders for one another. Our discussion is scheduled for Monday, July 25 from 7-8:30PM in the Parlor. Newcomers are always welcome! For more information, contact Jennifer Todd at jtoddosu@aol.com.

YOUTH MINISTRIES Register for any event at www.stlukesumc.com/youth. OUR MISSION: To welcome all youth and families into loving, Christ-centered relationships where they can get in tune with God's amazing love and be empowered to transform the world!

Youth Ministry Summer Overview During the summer months when many of our students are out of school, students are at camps, families are on vacations, and we are on mission trips, our youth ministry relaxes a little from our normal ministry schedule. Even though our ministry schedule changes, we find that it’s a great time for students to have the option of connecting to youth ministry in a more personal way. Summer time numbers are typically smaller, and students have the opportunity to check out the groups. Incoming sixth grade students are welcome in our Jr. High ministry. Incoming freshmen have the option of continuing throughout the summer in Jr. High or checking out the high school options. August 14 is the first Sunday where Freshmen will need to transition fully to Sr. High. Please take note of schedule changes that are listed; for more information always check out www.stlukesumc.com/ministries/youth.

Confirmation Ministry If you were not able to make the May parent meeting, please contact Kevin Davis so that you can catch up on information that is necessary for preparing for Confirmation in the fall. Confirmation ministry is now a one-year ministry, so we like to provide plenty of information on what we offer in the area of teaching, connecting students and the overall confirmation experience. Our next parent meeting will be held on Sunday, August 21 from 10:3011:30AM at the Lodge. PEER GUIDES—We are looking for those

who have been confirmed (8-12 grade students) to help with Confirmation in the fall. More information coming.

When we lose a loved one, our highly competitive society often values the “quick fix” to keep up the frenzied pace and urges us to “get over it and move on.” However, in order to journey through the grief process with grace and healthy functioning, human beings need to take time to learn about grief and the factors that complicate our natural responses.
