COMMUNION Before and After: A BENEFIT CONCERT St. Luke’s favorite Carrie Newcomer will perform at St. Luke’s in a benefit concert for The Dad’s Group on

Saturday, May 21 at 7:30PM in Robertson Chapel. “Before & After” is both the title of Newcomer’s latest album and the theme of the evening. The Dad’s Group, comprised of fathers who have lost children in unexpected, tragic deaths, are men who are very familiar with how quickly life can change in the space between “before” and “after.” The evening’s concert is an opportunity for fans of Newcomer’s work, as well as an opportunity for all those who have experienced deep loss, to enjoy an evening of tranquility and healing. Newcomer has worked with many notable artists throughout her career and has met with critical acclaim for her music. In the words of acclaimed writer Barbara Kingsolver, author of The Poisonwood Bible, "Carrie Newcomer is much more than a musician. She's a poet, storyteller, snake charmer, good neighbor, friend and lover, minister of the wide-eyed gospel of hope and grace." Tickets are $18 in advance or $25 at the door. Purchase tickets on Sunday May 1, 8 & 15 between services, during the week in the main office, or online at www.stlukesumc.com. Sponsored by St. Luke’s Spiritual Life Center.

2x4 Sale on May 15 Buy your 2 x 4 board for $52 during our one-day sale before and after church services on Sunday, May 15! Colorful Sharpie markers will be available for you to send a special message to the family on your board that will become part of their home. All donations are welcome, but just $1 per week or $52 will buy you a board. If you'd like to volunteer this Fall, there will be sign-up sheets available that day, or contact Kristin Rogers at kristinrogers@mac .com or 844-0304.

The Heart of Christianity: Rediscovering a Life of Faith

SUNDAY MORNING CLASSES

BOOK STUDIES

Café Conversations: Listening for the Heartbeat of God —A Celtic Spirituality. May 4-25, 9:30–11AM in E105. Join us for this overview of Celtic spirituality and its implications for us today. This book traces the lines of Celtic spirituality from the British church in the fourth century to the twentieth century, in the founder of the Iona community, George Macleod. Chapters include: Listening for Goodness; Listening within Creation; Listening for God in All Things; Listening with the Imagination, Listening and Acting, and Two Ways of Listening: John and Peter. Led by Dr. Marion Miller, St. Luke’s Associate Pastor.

New Beginnings Our self-led class always finds a variety of books, video series and topics that have called us to discuss our thoughts with our friends at church. Jesus lived with the awareness that God is doing something right here, right now, and anybody can be a part of it. Wherever he went, whatever he did, Jesus started discussions about what matters most, because for Jesus, God is always inviting us to open our eyes and join in. NOOMA is a series of short films that explore our world from a perspective of Jesus. Join our Sunday morning couples’ class as we take NOOMA's invitation to search, question, and join the discussion. May 1, 15, 22 at 9:30AM in E213. No registration required, but you can contact Nathan Montgomery (n8withan8@gmail.com or 317.340.7115) or go online (nooma.com) for information.

Tuesdays, May 3-31, 7-8:30PM in E105. Author and theologian Dr. Marcus Borg explores beliefs and characteristics of an “earlier” Christianity and an “emerging” Christianity by asking the question, “What is central to an authentic Christianity?” Learn to live passionately as Christians in today’s world by practicing the vital elements of Christian faith. Celebrate what it is about Christianity that gives it the power to transform the lives of people! Led by Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries, and Ed Simpson, St. Luke’s member. Book available in Oasis Bookstore.

COMMUNITY MINISTRIES NEW! Refugee Assistance Ministry The Community Ministries Commission at St. Luke’s is starting a new ministry, the Refugee Assistance Ministry. Indianapolis is now home to a large community of refugees, the vast majority of whom are from Burma. These refugees have come from refugee camps outside their own country, having fled to escape atrocities in their home communities. The refugees are given a small amount of help by our government, but their survival and acclimation here in the United States is up to them, along with help from volunteer groups.

Fox Hill Elementary School Community Garden Please join St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in our partnership with Congregation Beth-El Zedeck in creating our 2nd Annual Fox Hill Community Garden. Fox Hill Elementary School families who are in need of fresh produce benefit directly from this project. We are currently seeking volunteers to assist in the following areas: purchasing and planting of vegetables; watering, weeding and harvesting the vegetables; sorting vegetables for distribution to families and creation of recipes cards to go with produce from the garden. If you are interested in volunteering (no prior experience necessary!) to assist in this joint community effort throughout our “growing season,” please contact Kathy Mayberry at 506-3401 or kdsmayberry@yahoo.com.

Outreach, Inc.–Homeless and At-Risk Youth May is a busy month for Outreach, Inc., and we have already begun planning for the annual BBQ Graduation party. This is a celebration to recognize the achievement of our high school graduates and GED students. For many, it is the only recognition they will receive. We are asking for donations of $40 or more to help make this a celebration our youth will always treasure. Please make checks payable to St. Luke’s UMC, noting “Outreach, Inc.” on the memo line. The BBQ Graduation Party will be held on Saturday, June 11 at Broad Ripple Park – Shelter #1. Please join us! Contact Outreach, Inc. at 317-951-8886 or www.outreachindiana.org. St. Luke’s wants to help the refugees become vibrant and productive citizens of Indianapolis. Your help is needed. Volunteers are needed on Monday and Tuesday evenings to work with either kids or adults in improving their English skills. One of our main areas of focus is to provide mentors to encourage refugee teens/young adults in completing their high school diploma or equivalent at North Central High School. We also provide volunteers to work with grade school children in the after-school program at Nora Elementary. The time commitments are flexible. To volunteer or to learn more, contact Cathy Kennedy, 317-576-0341 or jaycathy@aol.com.

St. Luke’s Construction Ministry focuses on building wheelchair ramps for special needs situations in the Indianapolis area. We partner with Second Presbyterian Church and work as a team each Saturday to design, build and assemble ramps. Referrals come from the Indiana Council on Aging as well as other social service agencies. Priorities are given to handicapped clients who have no means of getting in and out of their homes. We completed 73 construction projects to help families in 2010 and hope to increase that number to 100 in 2011. Come help us help others in our own backyard. For more information, contact Dave Boyer tbucket2@sbcglobal.net or 251-1094 or Tara Lineweaver at tgline@sbcglobal.net or 329-9189.

Imani workshops products will be available for sale on Sunday, May 8 in the West Passage from 8AM-1PM. Imani Workshops is a revenue-generating social enterprise focused on producing high quality crafts by HIV+ artisans in western Kenya. Due to the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS, many patients have a hard time securing a job or accessing credit for a business loan. Imani Workshops gives these people a second chance at getting their life back on track while promoting economic self-sufficiency. Imani employees earn a living by producing high quality handmade goods such as jewelry, fabric bags, handmade paper and beadwork. One hundred percent of the income earned through sales is reinvested in the workshop through which artisans benefit from employment, skills training and other forms of empowerment.

The Garden Women's Retreat will be held May 13-14 at Waycross Retreat Center in Morgantown, Indiana. The Garden is bringing Rev. Cindy Bates (former St. Luke’s Associate Pastor) and Rev. Cindy and Linda will help each person look at what will be more meaningful at life’s different crossroads and how they can deepen their connection with God at those junctions in their lives. Blessing of the Bikes Our Second Annual Blessing of the Bikes will be held Sunday, June 12 at 6PM in Robertson Chapel. All bikers are to arrive one hour prior to the event. The Blessing of the Bikes is an unconventional service designed to spread the good news to those who may not like coming to church. It is a great way to raise awareness for bike enthusiasts inside and outside of our church, to help bikers to feel warm and welcome, and it is a good way for us to meet and serve in ministry among new people. Wear your usual cycle clothing and bring your bike (or skates or non-motorized scooter). The worship will start at 6PM with great music, but we recommend coming early if you want to see the bikes. The actual blessing of the bikes will take place outside at the main entrance of the church. After worship and the blessing, there will be a meal served for a small donation of $5. The rest of the evening is basically a motorcycle show and a ride. If you are interested in participating in this event as a biker or would like to purchase tickets, contact Chuck Miller at cjmiller50@comcast.net or Dr. Marion Miller at millerm@stlukesumc.com.

“One Family in Gaza”: Palestinians in Gaza are depicted either as violent terrorists or as helpless victims. The Awajah family (pictured left) challenges both portrayals. Through one family’s story, the larger tragedy of Gaza is exposed, and the courage and resilience of its people shines through.

“Something to Prove”: 15 girls and 15 boys from the Gaza Strip travel to the United States. For most of them, it was the first time they had left Gaza in their lives. This film follows the boys and girls on their journey.

SOWERS Sower’s Perennial Sale May 8 Each spring the Sowers share the bounty of their gardens with a Sunday sale in the northwest hallway. What grows well enough in our gardens to be divided and transplanted will grow well in yours. Whether you are planting a new area or want to find some old favorites to complement your existing garden, come to our tables on May 8. Besides perennials, we have a few shrubs and trees. This year we will help you identify the plants that are native, or cultivars of natives. On Mother’s Day, May 8, the sale begins at 8:15AM and continues throughout the morning. Earnings from sales go towards maintenance of the courtyard garden and other areas around the church.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN UMW Reading Group

Cookbooks

In May we will be exploring themes of religion and faith; guilt and redemption; and culpability and forgiveness when we discuss Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult. The book centers on a young, unmarried Amish girl who secretly gives birth to a baby, risking estrangement from her strictly religious family. The child is later found dead and, as a result, the girl is put on trial for murder. It has been described as a psychological drama concluding with courtroom suspense and includes a fascinating portrait (fictionalized) of Amish life. We are looking forward to an interesting discussion on Monday, May 23 from 7-8:30PM in the Parlor. Newcomers are always welcome. For information, contact Jennifer Todd at jtoddosu@aol.com.

The UMW cookbook would make a wonderful and unique Mother's Day gift! We will have beautifully packaged cookbooks for sale between services on Sunday, May 1 in the West Passage. Grab one for your favorite mother, mother in-law, grandmother, aunt, sister, best friend, or neighbor! The cookbook is also available for purchase in the main office during regular business hours. The cookbook contains over 500 recipes generously donated by members of the congregation, their family and friends. It costs $15, and the proceeds benefit various UMW sponsored organizations.

GRIEF MINISTRIES

(H.U.G.S.)—Healing Under Grief Support. When we lose a loved one, our highly competitive society often values the “quick fix” to keep up the frenzied pace and urges us to “get over it and move on.” However, in order to journey through the grief process with grace and healthy functioning, human beings need to take time to learn about grief and the factors that complicate our natural responses. It is important to find meaning in loss and to find connection with others who are walking the same journey.
