what we don’t need…or want. God shows us that it actually works the other way around. Real satisfaction comes from letting go first, and then discovering all that can be gained as a result. In other words, what is more important than what we hold is who holds us.
October 16-November 13 If you thought stewardship is just church code language for “give money,” you’re in for a surprise. Stewardship, the biblical word for management, involves everything about our lives: resources, relationships, health, thoughts, time and our very souls. God entrusts all these things to us to manage well. Managing life well is the focus of holistic stewardship. Much about this world teaches us that satisfaction is found in holding on—holding onto our stuff, our rights, our opinions, and even our energy. Save all we can for self and share
Rev. Rob Fuquay states,
“My prayer is that in this series we will grow deeper in our trust in the One who is faithful to reach out and take hold of us. From daily devotional practices, to inspiring worship services, to commitment opportunities I believe this is going to be a powerful month ahead that rounds out a very significant year in the life of St. Luke’s.”

Café Conversations
Lunch with Jesus Scholar, Marcus Borg
Wednesdays, 9:30–11AM in E105. Speaking Christian: Why Christian Words Have Lost Their Meaning and Power—and How They Can Be Restored is the newest work of author Marcus Borg. This retired Hundere Chair of Religion and Culture at Oregon State University shares that for many, Christianity has become an unfamiliar language. He contends that what we mean when using words and concepts related to our faith today is very different from what they meant originally. Has our language become a stumbling block to others? Why did this happen? How do we develop something different that is true to its original roots yet is attractive enough to draw into conversation today’s men, women, children, and youth seeking faith? Come discuss this book with others in preparation of Dr. Borg’s visit to the Christian Theological Seminary and St. Luke’s the weekend of October 7-9. Book may be purchased in Oasis Bookstore. Class facilitator is Dr. Marion Miller, St. Luke’s Associate Pastor.
Sunday, October 9, Noon, Fellowship Hall. Reservations required; $15/person. Order tickets online at www.stlukesumc.com. Your printed receipt is your ticket to be shown at the door. Biblical scholar and author Marcus Borg will be preaching at all three services on Sunday, October 9, and has graciously agreed to stay for lunch to further share with us his thoughts, and to be available for a Q&A session. He is the Canon Theologian at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Portland, OR and has authored 19 books, including Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time. His most recent book is Speaking Christian: Why Christian Words Have Lost Their Meaning and Power and How They Can Be Restored.
Women’s Bible Study Wednesdays, 1-2PM in E105. Questions God Asks Us. We often look to the Bible as the book of answers. How often, though, do we consider the challenging questions God asks? Author Trevor Hudson notes that Jesus was asked 183 questions in the Gospels but directly answered only three. In Questions God Asks Us, we're encouraged to focus on the quest rather than a resolution. "I thought the Bible existed to give me solutions to my everyday concerns and dilemmas," writes Hudson. "Then I realized I might be approaching God and the Bible from the wrong direction. Questions God Asks Us offers a fresh approach for devotions and is a discussion tool for Bible study. It's sure to bless anyone longing for a meaningful relationship with God. Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries, is class facilitator.
Bible 101 Tuesdays, October 4-25, 7-8:30PM in E107/109. Pre-registration recommended. Childcare available upon request. Become more comfortable using the Bible by being able to find books, chapters and verses more easily; examine and understand the various translations of the Bible; gain a brief overview of the Biblical story —identifying key people, places, and events; and explore ways Bible study can be used as a resource for daily faith living. Class facilitator is Dr. Marion Miller, St. Luke’s Associate Pastor.
Borg will be in Indianapolis for a workshop entitled “The Critical Need for a Re-Education of the Church,” Friday, October 7-Saturday, October 8 at Christian Theological Seminary. Details and registration at 317931-4224 or www.cts.edu/ events.
Having “Those” Conversations Sundays, October 23 and 30, 11AM-Noon in the Parlor. Pre-registration helpful. Contact Rev. Marsha Hutchinson at (317) 846-3404 x315. Sometimes we avoid having "those conversations" with loved ones and dear friends about end-of-life choices. Taking control of these choices and documenting them in advance can be a huge comfort to those we leave behind. Having a group discussion about living fully and dying well is a beginning and can actually relieve the dread of death details. Join Rev. Marsha Hutchinson for discussion regarding the difference between living wills, medical power of attorney, and a DNR order. What is hospice and palliative care? What if I want to stay at home? What if I can't speak for myself? Learn to help clergy and family by doing some of your own funeral planning. Anticipate laughter, coffee and a light breakfast.

Heaven, Hell, Life after Death
The Help
Sundays, October 2, 9 & 16, 11AM-Noon, Parlor. When we think about some of the most puzzling questions we have as humans, oftentimes we think about those revolving around eternity and what happens when we die. In the last year there’s been much discussion in churches, societies, religious institutions and restaurants around this very topic… heaven, hell and life after death. In this sixweek series, we’ll be exploring six viewpoints through various books and visual media and compare those viewpoints to what is found in the Bible. The hope is that when you walk away from this class you’ll have a better understanding of the subject so you can formulate your own opinion.
Sunday, November 20, 11AM-Noon in the Parlor. Would you like the opportunity to talk with others who have read the book or seen the movie The Help? Discuss with others that which you liked, the things that disturbed you, and insights for living today. Discussion leaders will be Marsha Reynolds, St. Luke’s member, and Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries.
CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.
October at The Track This month’s virtue is Creativity: Using your imagination to do something unique. WEEK ONE—The Creation Story; WEEK TWO—Moses and Miriam; WEEK THREE—David’s Final Words; WEEK FOUR—Sermon on the Mount, Salt and Light; and WEEK FIVE—Believers Share Life Together. Our memory verse is “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” EPHESIANS 2:10. If your child can memorize this verse and tell their Small Group Leader, they
get a special sticker on their Pit Pass. At the end of the year there will be special awards for those with the most stickers. Elementary students will share in communion on October 30. Parents are welcome to join their children for this special service if you would like. Contact Rev. Jamalyn Peigh Williamson at williamsonj@stlukesumc.com.

October at the Mini-Track
Elementary Kids Check-In Procedure
The kids will be learning “God loves everything about me.” Memory verse is “I am wonderfully made” PSALM 139:14. If Pre-K kids are able to recite the memory verse to the Small Group leader, they get a special sticker for the Pit Pass.
We have a new check-in process for your elementary children this year. When you bring your child(ren) to Robertson Chapel for Winner’s Circle, you will need to check them in and share who will pick them up from their Small Group classroom. Please look for your child's class sign for quick check-in. After worship, you will need to show some kind of ID to pick up your child. If you have a pager for younger children you can give us the pager number and use that instead. We are not trying to make life difficult but ensure that all children are safe and have a great experience on Sunday morning. Any questions can be directed to Rev. Jamalyn Peigh Williamson at williamsonj@stlukesumc.com. Thanks for your cooperation!
On October 16, we will celebrate a special milestone for 3rd graders when they will receive a Bible in worship. Please email thetrack@stlukesumc.com if your child will be participating in this special service (indicate which service) so we make sure we have enough Bibles for everyone.

COMMUNITY MINISTRIES Fox Hill Elementary School Partnership Construction Ministry/SAWS St. Luke’s Construction Ministry/SAWS has been a very successful mission that provides wheelchair ramps for disabled people. In 2010 we built 76 ramps in the Indianapolis area. In effect, we free people imprisoned in their homes due to their inability to afford wheelchair ramps to get in and out over their front steps. St. Luke’s volunteers continue to help us expand this ministry to many people still in need. In addition to utilizing volunteer talents to build the ramps, we need assistance in the administrative process, such as computer entry and calling applicants to gain information about their need. If you would like to help, or would like more information, contact Paul Snyder at 695-0585.
Fletcher Place Community Center Breakfast dates are October 11, 13, 21 and November 8, 10, 18, 22 & 29. Need donations of food, paper goods or cash to pay for these items. Contact Joe Kenny at 705-0489 or jgkenny@att.net for more information or to volunteer. Dinner dates are October 17 & 26 and November 21 & 23. Need volunteers to donate food items, cook and especially to transport and serve. See bulletin board in the hall between Robertson Chapel and Oasis Bookstore to sign up, or call Kay Horton at 253-9833 for more information. Due to shortages in the food pantry this summer, donations of dried beans, rice and canned salsa are needed. These can be placed in the drop boxes in the West Passage. Volunteers are also needed in the thrift store, food pantry and GED preparation. Contact Karen Mann at Fletcher Place, 6363466 ext. 4 or Karen@fletcherplacecc.org or Larry Paxton at ldrpaxton@indy.rr.com or 873-2415 to volunteer.
The St. Luke's—Fox Hill partnership is fully engaged for the third consecutive year. We began our tutoring program the week of September 12 (some eager beavers started a bit earlier). We are still in need of in-class tutoring (practically any time during any school day), tutoring in the After School Achievers program (2:30-6PM M-Th), and we have a new emphasis on providing mentors (the main need is for men) to lunch with kids who don't often experience conversing with adults during meal time. Please contact Tom Lange at tom.c.lange@gmail.com or 251-2274 with questions.
Outreach, Inc. Hundreds of youth age 14-24 live on the streets of greater Indianapolis due to abuse, neglect, family crisis and poverty... just to name a few. GREEN MINISTRIES Paper Drive Every 2nd Sunday
Bike Racks at Door #16 and Lodge
St. Luke’s Green Ministry earns money from the newspapers, junk mail, catalogs and office paper you dump in the big yellow and green bins at the east driveway. The heavier the load, the more money we earn. If you bring your paper before the 2nd Sunday of every month, we earn much more money if the weight is heavy enough. Please no cardboard, corrugated board or plastic.
Fall is the perfect time to leave your car in the garage and ride your bike to church. There are two bike racks by door #16 and another bike rack in front of the Lodge.
Collapsible, Ecologically Safe, Reusable Bottle Break the single-use plastic bottle habit! Buy a bright green “bottle” that can fold, snap and attach easily to your belt loop or backpack or fit in your purse. Great for traveling, costs $8. What Did You Say? If you find yourself saying that more frequently than you used to, then stop by the Free Hearing Screening on Sunday, October 2 from 9-11AM in C110. Hearing loss is one of the most common chronic health care problems facing older adults. More than 55 million Americans are estimated to suffer from hearing loss, and 80% of that group is undiagnosed or untreated. As our population continues to age, the problem of hearing loss continues to grow. Recent studies show that up to 50% of Baby Boomers are experiencing significant hearing loss as much as 20 years earlier in life than prior generations. What about you? Have your hearing checked for free, courtesy of St. Luke’s Health Ministries.

The theme for this year’s conference is INNOVATE with a focus on education. Acclaimed motivators and hands-on practitioners from across the county will inspire, train and connect through the sharing of experience and practical workshops during these three days. Later@St. Luke’s would like to encourage support for this organization as it mirrors our mission. CCDA also needs local volunteers for a multitude of projects ranging from ushers, airport transportation, and child care. For volunteers who render at least 10 hours of service, the registration fee will be reduced substantially to $25. For registration information and to volunteer, go to the CCDA website at www.ccda.org.

MUSIC MINISTRIES Joyful Sound Celebrates 15 Years
In Recital: Bruce Neswick
The small vocal ensemble with a dose of early morning attitude that can be heard frequently at the 8:15 service on Sunday mornings is bringing back all its former members to celebrate the group's 15 years of music-making and leadership in St. Luke's worship services. Joyful Sound will sing in all three morning services on Sunday, October 23.
Sunday, November 6, 3PM, Sanctuary. The newest member of the Indiana University/Jacobs School of Music faculty, organist Bruce Neswick has most recently served as Director of Music at the renowned Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York City. A dazzling recitalist and acclaimed improviser, Neswick delights audiences with his diverse programming. The St. Luke’s Sanctuary organ, an 80-rank Goulding & Wood instrument, will be heard in its full grandeur. The performance will benefit the Goulding & Wood/St. Luke’s UMC organ scholarship at Indiana University.
Joyful Sound frequently travels together to Music Outreach appearances, such as concerts at the Indiana United Methodist Children's Home, special programs for area retirement facilities, and annual Christmas caroling at St. Vincent's Hospital oncology unit. The opportunity to participate in Joyful Sound is open to any interested person— no vocal audition is required, and no previous experience in reading music or singing in choir is necessary. Contact Charles Manning, Director, at manningc@stlukesumc.com.
A Celebration of Creation and the Psalms Sunday, October 23, 3PM, Sanctuary. Choir and soloists from Congregation Beth-El Zedeck join with the St. Luke’s Chorale for a program of choral music, featuring the Haydn’s Creation (Part 1), and musical settings from the Psalms celebrating the beauty of creation. This interfaith exchange follows a performance during Sabbath services at temple. Cantor Giora Sharon and Mark Squire direct, with Charles Manning at the organ. Concert is free.
SINGLES MINISTRIES
Concert Guest Singers Invited Those individuals interested in singing with the Chancel Choir at the annual Candlelight Christmas Concerts (December 2, 7:30PM and December 3, 3PM) are encouraged to contact Carol Tully (tully95@earthlink.net) for information and rehearsal schedule. UNITED METHODIST MEN Letters from Dad
Fish Fry
If God were to take you home today... what would your loved ones hold in their hands tomorrow that would let them know that they were the treasures of your life? This fall, the United Methodist Men will be offering a study called Letters from Dad. Learn to write the things you have always wanted to say but just didn't know how. Leave treasured letters of love that will be read long after you are gone. Build deep and lasting relationships with other men in your Legacy Group. Store, in letter form, the only three things that remain: Faith, Hope and Love. Program will run October 4December 6; purchase of materials required. Contact Rev. David Williamson at 846-3404 or williamsond@stlukesumc.com for more info.
Come out on Thursday, October 6, 4:30-7PM to support the annual UMM Fish Fry. Last year, we served over eight hundred people and raised $2,500 to support rebuilding efforts in Fondwa, Haiti. Men, if you're interested in helping with this year's fish fry, contact Matt Roop at 447-4057 or mkroop66@ gmail.com. For everyone else, come out for some great food on October 6 (drive-thru service is also available for those who don’t have time to eat in).
Men's Breakfast All men are invited to the United Methodist Men's monthly breakfast on Saturday, October 1 at 8AM in Fellowship Hall. We offer a hearty breakfast, fellowship, sharing and an interesting program. You are invited to come join us. Please call Chris Bailey at 306-8491 to RSVP. This will assist in planning and allow for the correct amount of food.
Theology Unplugged bal·ance/ˈbaləns/ Noun: An even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady. We all talk about wanting more “balance.” Balance between home and work. Balance between spouse and kids. Balance between football and church. Well, maybe not that last one, but football season is here and it's on our brains... Join us at the Rusty Bucket at 8:30PM on Wednesday, October 19 for an open time of fellowship as we discuss what kind of balance God is looking to achieve in our lives. RSVP to Matt Roop at mkroop66@gmail.com or 692-1865.
