IMPACT Parenting Conference Saturday, February 23, 8:30AM-1PM KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Who should plan to attend IMPACT Parenting Conference 2013? Anyone who… …is interested in knowing how to get and stay closer to the kid you care about, whether six or sixteen. …is invested in the development of the next generation and willing to go one step further to help kids discover who they were meant to be. …wants a simple system for gathering core truths about your kid and how to interact with him or her. …could benefit from some time spent in conversation with other parents at the same life stage. …is eager to fill their parenting or grandparenting toolbox with practical strategies from those who’ve “been there.”

Dan Webster, author of KidUnique ATTENTION GRANDPARENTS! The IMPACT Parenting Conference is not just for parents! If there’s a kid in your life you care about, they need someone to help them discover how great they are, how gifted they are and how bright a future they can have. YOU can be that adult! The message of KidUnique is equally appropriate for anyone who works with or cares about the next generation. In addition to the keynote address, we’ve custom designed our breakout sessions to appeal to a variety of audiences. ADULT EDUCATION To pre-register for a class, go to www.stlukesumc.com/getinvolved/classes, or contact the church office 846-3404. Oasis = Oasis Bookstore and Gift Shop located inside St. Luke’s.

Tuesdays and Thursdays, now-February 28, 7-8PM in C122 (Tuesdays) and E213 (Thursdays). Childcare available upon request. Later@St. Luke’s and St. Luke’s Hispanic Ministry Team partners with St. Luke’s Adult Education to present “Spanish Together.” The approach to class sessions is very conversational as individuals learn what’s needed to talk with those with whom they come in contact. There are no prerequisites; however, please pre-register via the website, www.stlukesumc.com, or by emailing class leader David Clapp, International Director at Wabash College and St. Luke’s member, at clappd@wabash.edu.

Café Conversation America’s Prophet: Moses and the American Story Wednesdays, now-February 27, 9:30-11AM in E105. In this groundbreaking book, New York Times bestselling author Bruce Feiler travels through touchstones in American history and traces the biblical prophet's influence from the Mayflower through today. He visits the island where the pilgrims spent their first Sabbath, climbs the bell tower where the Liberty Bell was inscribed with a quote from Moses, retraces the Underground Railroad where "Go Down, Moses" was the national anthem of slaves, and dons the robe Charlton Heston wore in “The Ten Commandments.” Meticulously researched and highly readable, America's Prophet is a thrilling, original work of history that will forever change how we view America, our faith and our future. Book available in Oasis Bookstore. Led by Dr. Marion Miller, St. Luke’s Associate Pastor.

Women’s Bible Study Be Comforted: A Study of the Book of Isaiah Wednesdays, now-April 10, 1-2PM in E105. Isaiah is sometimes referred to as a miniature Bible with regard to its structure. It has 66 chapters just as the Bible has 66 books. There are two divisions within Isaiah—39 chapters in the first and 27 chapters in the second. It is said that the prophet Isaiah is quoted in the New Testament more than all other prophets combined. Why is this? Could it be because Isaiah identifies God as sovereign over creation and history, as holy, as judge and redeemer? Could it be because he writes of a servant through whom God’s redemption will come? Could it be because he envisions the hope of God’s people in a world that needed God’s message— both then and now? Let’s explore and discover what ageless truths are available for our faithful living today. Led by Terri Coe, St. Luke’s Director of Adult Ministries.

Religion and Science: Is it Possible to Take Science Seriously and Still Be A Christian? Sundays, now-March 10, 10:45AM–Noon in E213. This video series is hosted by Francis S. Collins, Director of The National Institutes of Health and the former Director of The Human Genome Project who has authored the best-selling book The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief. Additional contributions are made by sixteen scientists and theologians, including two Nobel Laureates. Topics include: Friends or Foes: The Story of a Complex Relationship; Truth in Science and Religion; God and Nature; Creation and Evolution; What Does it Mean to be Human?; The God of Hope and the End of the World; Genetic Science and the Frontiers of Ethics, and, Creation Care. Class facilitated by Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries, and Dr. Steven Elliott, St. Luke’s Member.

Sundays, February 10, 17 and 24, 6:30-8PM, Fellowship Hall (please note dates have changed from information previously published). In light of recent fighting and the UN's endorsement of the Palestinian Authority to non-member observer state, this age-old conflict is once again a topic of conversation among many. Questions are raised as to why the conflict began, how it relates to Biblical history and Christianity, Judaism and Islam today. Is peace and well-being possible? Join Dr. Kent Millard and community leaders as they help us sort through the various issues of concern. • FEBRUARY 10: Panel of Palestinian leaders • FEBRUARY 17: Panel of Jewish leaders • FEBRUARY 24: Panel regarding peace-making initiatives

Holy Land with Rob and Susan Fuquay

Normandy and Paris

September 16-25, 2013. This will be a special opportunity to visit the historical and spiritual sites of the Holy Land with our Senior Pastor Rob Fuquay providing the context and spiritual leadership. We will visit Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, stop at the Mount of the Beatitudes and then travel down the Jordan River to the Dead Sea, where will make a stop at the impressive site of Masada. On our way to Jerusalem, we stop at Qum Rum and then spend a day in Bethlehem, visit the Garden of Gethsemene, Wailing Wall, the Via Delorosa, the Holy Church of the Sepulcher and end our week at the traditional site of the Garden Tomb.

with Dr. E. Carver & Marianne McGriff

This trip will have a special added attraction as Rev. Fuquay will be using this opportunity to video segments to be used as supplementary material to future Disciple study classes. Those on the trip will get a preview, and in some locations, be part of the taping.

August 20-28, 2013. There is a waiting list for this trip. After leading groups from St. Luke's to the shores of Normandy, France in 2011 and 2012, former St. Luke’s senior pastor Dr. Carver McGriff has once again agreed to lead a group through the historical sites of the Normandy Invasion. We will stay for five nights in Bayeux, France and visit Utah and Omaha Beaches, as well as very personal locations where Carver served following the invasion, including the very spot where he was wounded in an artillery attack. We end the visit with a meaningful stop at the American and the German cemeteries. Also included is a visit to MontSaint-Michel (a UNESCO world heritage site) and Giverny, to visit Monet's home and gardens, and will conclude with two nights in Paris.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.

KidUnique Small Group Study

Our virtue for February is Peace—proving you care more about each other than winning an argument. Peace is a part of God’s character. And God wants us to reflect peace in our relationship with others. Peace is more than just “not fighting” and saying the right things to keep people happy. Peace is living in a way that shows you care more about others than about being right. It’s about building strong relationships through mutual trust. The monthly memory verse is: “So let us do all we can to live in peace and let us work hard to build each other up.” (ROMANS 14:19)

February at the Mini-Track The theme for February at the Mini-Track is “Can You Measure It?” The kids will be learning “Jesus loves me.” Their memory verse is “How wide and high and long and deep is the love of Christ?” (EPHESIANS 3:18)

Family Holy Communion Experience On Sunday, February 3, your family will have an opportunity to experience holy communion as a family in a rare and unique way. The rest of your family can join your elementary child(ren) in Robertson Chapel at 10:30AM for a chance to worship together and partake in this sacrament as a whole family. This special service will conclude at 11:00, so if you plan to attend worship in the Sanctuary at that hour, please come early and join us in Robertson Chapel at 10:30. This will serve as Family Fuel for February.

Find Your Place at The Track 2013 is the Year of the Volunteer in Children’s Ministries! We’ve committed ourselves to rallying around and supporting our volunteers in new and exciting ways. One of our objectives is to create a multi-tiered system of volunteer opportunities to appeal to a variety of individuals. We’re designing our opportunities to meet not only the time and availability of our volunteers, but their spiritual gifts and talents as well. Is teaching or shepherding not your calling? Think beyond Sunday morning! If you’re interested in joining our team to support our growth we will find a project that is right for you! Contact thetrack@stlukesumc.com

Plan Your Summer Calendar! Children’s Ministries will be offering two amazingly different yet equally exciting options for your children this summer. Save these dates on your family calendar: July 8-12, 2013. Daycamp. We will partner with Spring Hill Camps to make St. Luke’s a site for their daycamp. If your child has competed K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th grade, then they are in for an amazing adventure. Look for more details soon. In the meantime, you can visit www.springhillcamps.com/IN/ daycamp. July 22-26, 2013. Summer Splash (St. Luke’s Vacation Bible School) brings fun and excitement to children three years old through rising 4th graders. Youth and adults can volunteer in a variety of different ways to make this the best week of the year for all involved. If there’s a specific role you’d like to volunteer for this year, please contact Amy Myhand at myhanda@stlukesumc.com

What if our role as influential adults is to help kids discover who they really are? What if the best gift we can give children is to empower them to explore their uniqueness so that they can learn to appreciate and accept their true selves? That's what we'll be learning to do in a small group for four Sundays at 11AM, March 3, 10, 17 and April 7 (to accommodate for spring breaks and Easter), using a book entitled KidUnique by Dan Webster. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, work with children or are simply interested in investing in tomorrow's future, you'll benefit from this great study. GREEN MINISTRIES Green Gratitude

More than 90% of Indiana’s power plants are powered by coal. Indiana faces more than $5 billion in annual health care costs associated with the harmful effects of power plants. Clean energy investment can create jobs and improve our air. Come learn about what is happening in Indiana and what you can do to make a difference. Speaker is Megan Anderson from the Sierra Club. Wednesday, February 27, 7-8:30PM in the Parlor. No registration or fee.

The Green Ministry wishes to thank Erica Lampe for singlehandedly recycling all the programs from the Indianapolis Children’s Choir performances on December 15 and 16, 2012. Erica helped get St. Luke’s Green Ministry to its goal of four tons per month in the green and yellow Abitibi bins at the east driveway (next to Lion’s Gate condos). You can help, too, by placing all your newspapers, catalogs, magazines, office paper and junk mail in the Abitibi bins. The Green Ministry earns about $80 a month when we exceed four tons.

Surviving Grief and Learning to Live Again

Terms like elderly, senior, senior adult, golden ager, silvers, don’t seem to adequately describe today’s Boomers—the New Old. The Encore generation is gaining popularity in society as it communicates that this generation has done some great things and wants to continue to contribute. Baby Boomers are aging in a totally different way than the images of preceding generations; most have no desire to spend retirement years “rocking” the days away. They are interested in changing the world; they are doing everything they can to stay healthy, and many plan to keep working beyond the beginning of Social Security, especially in places where they are making a difference.

All are welcome for fellowship to learn more about the St. Luke’s grief ministry (H.U.G.S.) for those who have lost a spouse or significant other. Several speakers will offer stories of triumph over tragedy and how group support has contributed to their wholeness journey. Spend some time in a small and large group and light a candle in memory of your loved one.

The Encore Ministry will meet Monday, February 25 at 6:30PM in the Parlor for fellowship, light supper, and discussion. Email Rev. Marsha Hutchinson at hutchinsonm@ stlukesuc.com to RSVP. UPCOMING MARCH EVENT: Book discussion led by Jan Stevens.

A light supper of pizza, salad and dessert will be offered following the program. Sunday, February 24, 2-4PM in the Parlor. RSVP to Rev. Marsha Hutchinson at hutchinsonm@ stlukesumc.com or 846-3404 x315.

MUSIC MINISTRIES Pipe Organ Festival The 7th annual Indianapolis Pipe Organ Festival will take place on February 10 in St. Luke's Sanctuary at 3PM. The program will feature several members of the Indianapolis Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, including St. Luke's Associate Director of Music, Charles Manning. Included in this year’s program is the opportunity for the audience to participate in a short hymn sing. Many of our chapter members are superb organists and each year a group of AGO members are selected to perform at this annual festivel. Due to time constraints for worship services and musical tastes of each place of worship, organists are sometimes limited in what they can perform; this is their chance to shine. Our hope is for the community to gain a greater appreciation for organ music in general and realize the organ still has a place in today's varied communities. Admission the day of the event is $15 adults, $10 students. Advance tickets of $10 adults and $5 students are available by ordering online at www.indyago.org.

SUNDAY MORNING CLASSES

Conversations Around the Scripture Sundays, 9:30–10:30AM in E105. United Methodist Pastor Martin Thielen was asked, “What’s the least I can believe and still be a Christian?” His thoughtful response became the basis of a book that helps us consider what matters most in a life of faith. Thielen begins his book entitled What’s the Least I Can Believe and Still Be Christian by identifying things we need not believe. He concludes the book with ten things he believes we need to understand about Jesus—his identity, priority, work, example, death, resurrection, legacy, and vision for the world. Thielen notes that a great benefit of these beliefs about Jesus is that they provide promising answers to some of life’s questions. Join with other St. Luke’s members and friends as we share our thoughts and dialogue about the various elements of faith that are important to us. The book may be purchased in the Oasis Bookstore. Led by Gary Chambers, Brian Earnhart, and Craig Overmyer, St. Luke’s Members.

Josh discovered that life begins when we embrace our bad days and keep going forward, one step at a time. Book available in the Oasis Bookstore.

Every Friday, 5-7PM, Fellowship Hall or N103/104. This prayer form is an alternative to seated meditation and offers an opportunity to end your week with a time for quiet prayer and contemplation. For more information, please contact Amy Myhand at myhanda@stlukesumc.com

Check-In System We are now utilizing a computerized check-in system (CheckPoint) in Children's Ministries. Parents should register their children in this system in The Track area (East Passage). There are computer kiosks located across from the pager desk in The Track, and staff available to assist you. Once registered, the printer will produce a name badge for each child as well as a corresponding badge for the parent to use when picking up their child(ren). Parents who are missing their name badges will only be allowed to pick up their children by obtaining permission of the children's ministry staff. Volunteers will not release a child without a badge. The CheckPoint system will provide a greater level of organization during the check-in procedure, improvement in attendance data, and an increase in the efficiency of our overall administration. But most importantly, the automated system will heighten the overall security of children's ministry and increase parental confidence that each child is as safe as possible while within the walls of St. Luke's UMC.

UMW Reading Group Why do Americans have such a difficult time agreeing on basic issues like the meaning of freedom, the role of religion in public life, or what it means to be an American? Historian and award-winning journalist Colin Woodard argues North America is actually made up of eleven nations, each with its own historical roots. We Indianapolis Hoosiers will find ourselves in Greater Appalachia! We'll explore these concepts further at our meeting on Monday, February 25 from 7-8:30 p.m. in E107/109 (please note room change) when we discuss American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America. Newcomers are always welcome. Childcare is available on request one week in advance. For information, contact Jennifer Todd at jtoddosu@aol.com.
