MONTHLY

COMMUNION Summer T.I.M.E.:

Time for Recreation & Re-Creation Our summer’s Together In Ministry Everyday theme encourages us to be intentional with how we experience renewal of mind, body, and spirit through rest, play, laughter, relaxation, spontaneity, creativity, and worship.

American Indian Emphasis For several years St. Luke’s World Missions has sent teams to South Dakota to work with American Indians—now is your opportunity to learn from ten local tribes. There are 47,000 American Indians in Indiana, and over 5,000 in Indianapolis. Come learn and engage as they share their culture and spirituality.

Ribbon Shirts

This month, in addition to experiences of fellowship and worship, we also have opportunities to help our neighbors as we participate in the following activities:

Friday, August 6, Friday, 6:30 PM, Great Hall. You are invited to participate in making “Ribbon Shirts.” Storytelling and Indian dance traditions will be part of the educational program. Call Jan Nichols (846-3404 x364) to sign-up. Registration is $10/person (includes shirt supplies).

Garrison Keilor, featured guest (Tickets on sale through the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra beginning May 10: $35/adult; $10/children). Bring a picnic dinner, blanket or lawn chair and sit with members of the St. Luke’s family. Look for the T.I.M.E. banner and balloons! Hosts will be Erica & Mark Lampe and Dana & John Guild. Gates open at 4PM. As summer vacation comes to an end and we begin to transition life back to fuller calendars with the activities of school and work, organizational commitments and volunteer opportunities, may we continue to find time to stop and experience the wonder, the joy, the sacredness of life.

Friday, August 20, 7PM, Fellowship Hall. This humorous film (rated PG-13) centers around two boys who grow up to live on Coeur D-Alene Indian Reservation in Idaho. One is a tribal storyteller, and the other is a basketball player with a brooding disposition. Their journey helps them achieve a better understanding for unconditional acceptance, not losing sight of their identity, and to recognize that perspectives differ. Join us for discussions with American Indians and an Indian Academic Historian.

American Indian Sunday August 22, Sunday. Anita Phillips, Executive Director, Native American Comprehensive Plan of the United Methodist Churches will be interviewed by Dr. Millard at the 8:15, 9:30 & 11AM services. Then stop by a “Gathering of the People” from 9AM-1PM in the Great Hall. Experience American Indians from 1700’s to present day through cultural demonstrations and displays with traditional music. Purchase your authentic Indian-made art at the “market place.”

“Gathering of the Winds” Friday, September 17, 7PM, Luke’s Lodge. Join our American Indian friends for a delightful evening of Indian culture and Indian sweet treats.

In this first-person narrative, author Greg Mortenson picks up where Three Cups of Tea left off in 2003, sharing his vision to promote peace through education and literacy by recounting efforts to establish schools for girls in Afghanistan. Additionally, he tells of his extensive work in Azad Kashmir and Pakistan after a massive earthquake hit the region in 2005, and the unique ways he has built relationships with Islamic clerics, militia commanders, and tribal leaders even as he was dodging shootouts with feuding Afghan warlords and surviving an eight-day armed abduction by the Taliban. Join one of the discussion groups to learn and share with others in preparation for Mortenson’s visit to St. Luke’s Monday, September 27. The book is available in Oasis Bookstore.

Café Conversations Summer Gatherings

Women’s Bible Study

Café Conversations will be meeting casually this summer on Wednesday mornings from 10-11:30AM in E105. Our conversations in August will focus on the next book in Thomas Cahill's “Hinges of History” Series entitled Desire of the Everlasting Hills, The World Before and After Jesus. Thomas Cahill has been referred to as a master interpreter of what he calls "the hinges of history"—crucial turning points in the formation of Western culture. His work relies heavily on the Bible, but includes many other historical writings to provide a compelling historical narrative. Cahill examines the life of Jesus as a loving friend, itinerant preacher, and quiet revolutionary, whose words and actions inspired his followers to journey throughout the Roman world and speak the truth he instilled. Newcomers are welcome—our discussion of this book will begin on August 4 and continue through the end of the month. For information, contact Jennifer Todd at jtoddosu@aol.com.

Wednesdays, Sept. 15-Oct. 20, 1-2:20PM in E105. This fall’s study, “A Life Worthy of the Gospel,” asks the questions “How do Christians think and act faithfully in a complex and often ambiguous world?” “What models from Scripture and Church history might help us to life ‘lives worthy of the Gospel’ in the 21st century?” Utilizing study material designed by Dr. Sondra Wheeler, a professor of Christian ethics at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC., Terri Coe will lead discussions on topics such as Scripture: The Story that Forms Us; The Spirit of Christian Life; and Transforming Grace.

Café Conversations Wednesdays, beginning Sept. 8, 9:30-11AM in E105. Join St. Luke’s Associate Pastor Dr. Marion Miller for conversations related to Philip Gulley’s newest book, If the Church Were Christian, a challenging and thought-provoking examination of the author’s vision for today’s church if Christians truly followed the core values of Jesus Christ. If the church were Christian, Gulley argues, affirming our potential would be more important than condemning our brokenness. If the church were Christian, inviting questions would be valued more than supplying answers. If the church were Christian, meeting needs would be more important than maintaining institutions. With these and seven other statements, Gulley provides a profound picture of what the church would look like if it refocused on the real priorities of Jesus. Book is available in Oasis.

A Listening Heart: Bible Study for Women with Young Children 2nd and 4th Mondays, beginning September 13, 7-9PM in E212. Childcare available upon request. This fall we will discuss John Ortberg’s book If You Want to Walk on Water, You've Got to Get Out of the Boat which is designed to deepen our faith and trust in God. Rev. Jamalyn Peigh Williamson will lead the group through this study. New members always welcome. For more info, contact Ann Smith, 569-1359 or carmelsmiths@ yahoo.com, or Kari Miller, 873-8606 or kkmiller01 @sbcglobal.net.

Bible Basics Wednesdays, Sept. 15–Oct. 13, 7-8:30PM in E107-109. Pre-registration recommended. Childcare available upon request. Back by popular demand! Become more comfortable using the Bible by being able to find books, chapters, and verses more easily; examine and understand the various translations of the Bible; gain a brief overview of the Biblical story—identifying key people, places, and events; and explore ways Bible study can be used as a resource for daily faith-living. Class facilitator is Dr. Marion Miller.

Disciple II: Into the Word, Into the World Wednesdays, September 15 – May 18 (with holiday breaks), 7–8:30PM in E105. Pre-registration recommended. Childcare available upon request. Join Terri Coe and Dr. Michael Condit as we review the biblical accounts of the beginnings of Judaism and Christianity. As we read Genesis, Exodus, Luke and Acts, we also will trace key themes that begin in these books and weave their way throughout the Bible. Workbook is available in Oasis.

Disciple Lite: Introduction to the Old Testament Thursdays, Sept. 16-Nov. 4, 7-8:30PM in E105. Pre-registration recommended. Childcare available upon request. Explore with Rev. David Williamson and Gary Larsen what it means to be God’s people. How does the story of Israel’s covenant with God inform our identity as heirs of that covenant? Listen afresh to the witness of the Hebrew scriptures to hear God’s call and purpose for our lives today. Learn and grow through group discussions, video presentations and weekly study assignments. Workbook is available in Oasis.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES Sunny Summer Sundays "We're gonna take it in--We're gonna live it out—we're gonna show this world—what really counts." This has been our theme for the summer during Sunny Summer Sundays. The kids have been learning the parables and what it means to put them in practice. The leaders have been enjoying seeing the kids dance during our opening music and begin to learn what it means to put our faith into action. Just as a reminder, for the month of August elementary aged kids will continue to worship with their parents until the Children's Moment when they will join the staff and leaders for Live It Out Loud in the Great Hall. Parents should pick up their children in the Great Hall after 9:30 and 11:00 worship. Preschool children will go to their classrooms at the beginning of the 9:30 and 11:00 worship. Thanks to all our fabulous leaders this summer. We could not have done it without you!

The Track Is Revving Up Its Engine! The children's wing is getting a face lift. The East Wing is now The Track—where we discover, seek, live and share God's love. We will have two informational meetings at 9:30AM in the Parlor on August 1 and August 8. At this time, parents will get a chance to ask questions about the new transitions coming into play for the fall. If you cannot make the meeting, please stop by the Registration Table in the Track (East Passage) beginning on August 1 so we can get all our St. Luke's kids in a small group. Registration will also help parents stay involved and keep up to date with all the activities throughout the year. We are in need of Small Group leaders for all ages of Preschool and 1st and 5th grade. Leading a Small Group will offer you an opportunity to not only connect with children but also help them connect to each other. We are looking for adults who are willing to be a consistent person in the children's lives. If you are interested in investing your time in our kids, please contact thetrack@stlukesumc.com.

This six-session study is designed to facilitate conversations and action related to the issues raised in that Pastoral Letter. The study challenges participants to look at their congregations and communities and to take actions that will contribute to a healthier and more peaceful planet. Music may be the food of love, but a choir pitch-in is music to the ears of many a St. Luke’s Chancel Choir member. The singing season officially begins Thursday, August 26 with a pitch-in dinner followed by rehearsal. Now is a great time to join the choir—no audition required; just contact Carol Tully at 566-0762 or tully95@earthlink.net for more information. All new members receive a brief orientation with Carol and are introduced to Mark Squire, Director of Music Ministries. So, accept the invitation this year to our feast of fellowship, and you’ll soon be rewarded by the longlasting feast of music that follows!

Get the youngsters in your family started on a lifelong musical journey. For children’s programs, including choirs and handbells, contact Debra Nethercott, Director of Children’s Music, at 846-3404 x329 or nethercottd@stlukesumc.com. ••• For handbell choirs, contact Mike Keller, Director of Wesleyan Ringers, at 846-3404 x366 or kellerm@stlukesumc.com, or Marsha Coyner, Director of Joyful Rhythms, at 846-3404 x566 or coynerm@stlukesumc.com. ••• Three adult choirs sing regularly in worship at St. Luke’s, including the Chancel Choir, Joyful Sound (choir that sings at the 8:15AM Sunday services) and New Song (women’s ensemble). Other musical opportunities include St. Luke’s Orchestra and Taizé services. For more information about these, contact the St. Luke’s music ministries office at 846-3404 x338.

SPIRITUALITY AND THE ARTS

Perspectives of St. Luke’s What does St. Luke’s mean to you? Our art gallery is filled with artists’ answers to that question. There are depictions of events, places and emotions. Hopefully viewing their work will help you explore what St. Luke’s means to you. This exhibit can be seen in the gallery area above the east end of the Narthex for the month of August.

Art Minstry Invites You to See and Be Like “Herb And Dorothy” You don’t have to be a Rockefeller to collect art! This remarkable couple, Herb and Dorothy Vogel, amassed a collection of over 2,000 pieces of contemporary art by living on her salary as a librarian and using his postal worker’s salary to buy art. They eventually gave their collection to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and started collecting all over again. The Spiritual Life Center’s Art Ministry invites you to enjoy their story on film (89 minutes) and start your own art collection. Students from Herron will be displaying their work for your enjoyment and purchase. Friday, August 13, 6:30-9PM in Fellowship Hall. “Herb and Dorothy” will also be shown at Lockerbie UMC, 237 N. East on Thursday, August 13, 6:30PM as part of the Citywide film series.

UNITED METHODIST MEN Monthly Men’s Breakfast

Servant Day

All men are invited to the United Methodist Men’s monthly breakfasts on Saturday, September 11 and October 2 at 8AM. We offer a hearty breakfast, fellowship, sharing and an interesting program. There will not be a speaker for the August 7 breakfast as the United Methodist Men will cook and serve breakfast for Servant Day. All men are invited to join us. Please call Peter Johnson at 848-7149 to RSVP. This will assist in planning to allow for the correct amount of food.

For the second annual Servant Day (August 7), the United Methodist Men will be preparing & serving breakfast and then sponsoring the project at Nora Elementary. Helping with breakfast has become a fabulous, and semi-regular, opportunity to help the church while also having a chance for men's fellowship. Spending the morning at Nora Elementary is a chance for men & women of all ages to help the community. Let Nate know if you can help! n8withan8@yahoo.com

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN UMW Reading Group Who are your personal role models? How have they impacted your life? How do we understand the role of the saints in the historical church in serving as role models today? Are they still relevant? The UMW Reading Group will examine these questions as we consider and discuss My Life with the Saints by James Martin. It is one thing to read the lives of the saints, quite another to read about somebody who lives with the saints, who thinks about, researches and calls upon certain saints regularly. Such a person is GE-exec-turned Jesuit priest James Martin, associate editor of the national Catholic weekly America, who details his introduction to and relationship with more than a dozen of his favorite haloed heroes. With wit and candor, Martin brings those and his other seemingly distant role models down to earth, citing instances from their biographies and, with deepest effectiveness, revealing his personal connection to each and how each has assisted his life. Our meeting will be held on Monday, August 23 from 7-8:30PM in the Parlor. All are welcome to our discussion. For information, contact Jennifer Todd at jtoddosu@aol.com.

UMW CIRCLE MEETINGS
