This summer we are encouraged to be intentional with how we experience renewal of mind, body, and spirit. To be leisurely, to take time for sabbath, to be still is not always easy. Perhaps many of us can relate to Tim Hansel's book title, When I Relax I Feel Guilty. However, this time of quiet, reflection, rest, play and relaxation enhances creativity and innovation. It contributes to stress management, health and wellness, joy and satisfaction. To the left is a listing of special days and events for our participation as we so choose. May this summer be for all of us a time of wonder, joy and renewal. Plan now to attend the Concluding Event! Sunday, August 15, 6PM National Relaxation Day ST. LUKE’S NIGHT AT CONNER PRAIRIE

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES Sunny Summer Sundays

VOCABULARY LESSON:

Our Summer Sunday School programming is underway. Children who have finished preschool-Pre-K will be having Sunday school in the East Wing at 9:30 and 11AM. Elementary children (completed K-Grade 4) will be worshipping with their parents in the Sanctuary until the Children's Moment. After the Children's Moment and Doxology, children will join the staff and volunteers for Live It Out activities in the Great Hall at 9:30 and 11AM. Our exciting new programs will begin September 5.

• East Wing=The Track • Sunday School=Sunday Small Group • Sunday School Teacher=Small Group Leader

Sunny Summer Sundays Volunteers Needed NOW-August 29, our wonderful Sunday School teachers get a well-deserved vacation. We need Sunny Summer Sunday heroes to help teach and assist Preschool and Pre-K classrooms this summer. We also need helpers for our Elementary Summer Activities. Please contact Mary Hach or Dawn Bick if you'd like to volunteer.

What’s The Track? Names matter. They give us an identity and help us join together as a community. It is for this very reason that the East Wing is getting a facelift this summer, and part of this facelift is a new name. The East Wing— children’s ministry area—will become known as The Track. At The Track we long to help children Discover who God is in their lives; Celebrate what God is doing in the world around us; Live out the lessons that Jesus teaches us; and Share the love of Christ with others. Be on the lookout for some new Track gear that will help promote what St. Luke’s has to offer children in our community. We are really excited about our big kick off for The Track on September 5 at 9:30AM. See you at the starting line!

COMMUNITY MINISTRIES

Sunday Small Group Registration We will begin registering children for Fall Sunday Small Groups on August 1. Please fill out a registration form for your children so that they can be placed in a small group in The Track. Registration also allows parents and children to receive mailings regarding important upcoming events. Please stop by The Track (East Passage) to register your child during August and pick up your new Track gear.

Small Group Leaders Needed We are in need of small group leaders that are willing to lead or assist two consecutive Sundays every other month. We need volunteers for preschool-Grade 5 at 9:30 and 11AM. Please contact Dawn Bick (bickd@stlukesumc.com) or Mary Hach (hachm@stlukesumc.com) if you are interested in serving our children at St. Luke’s.

Children Learn about American Indians In August, children at St. Luke's will have several opportunities to learn about American Indians. On August 6, children will create a special ribbon shirt from 68PM, and return August 21, wearing their shirts, to learn an authentic American Indian dance. During Sunny Summer Sundays, August 15, 22, and 29, children's programming will focus on American Indian crafts, stories and experiences. We hope many children will be able to join us for these exciting experiences.

Construction Ministry Continues to Grow and Serve Construction Ministries/SAWS, now in its fifth year as a St. Luke’s Community Ministries program, builds wheelchair ramps at the homes of individuals who are in need. Last year, we built 45 wheelchair ramps here in the Indianapolis area. In fact, we have nearly doubled our ramp output every year! In addition, during the winter months, we helped complete a large multi-purpose room at Barnes United Methodist Church, built a stage at our very own Luke’s Lodge, and constructed a new ramp at the St. Luke’s modular building. We have formed collaborations with organizations like the Multiple Sclerosis Society to make sure that those who can benefit from our services have access to them. We have also increased our fundraising

efforts so that finances do not limit the number of families in the community we can reach. And, we continually seek additional volunteers who will give their time one or more Saturdays or weekdays to help liberate individuals who are currently trapped in their homes. If you are interested in making a financial contribution or volunteering, please contact Dave Boyer (tbucket2@sbcglobal.net or 251-1094) or Tara Lineweaver (tgline@sbcglobal.net or 329-9189). You can also learn more about our ministry on July 25 when Dr. Millard, who will be joining us for a build on July 24, will interview ministry leaders and a former ramp client during church services.

FELLOWSHIP Passionate People Peddling The St Lukes Bicycling Group (Passionate People Peddling) ride every Saturday morning starting at 8:30AM and ending around 12–12:30PM. The rides will continue each Saturday through August 29. The rides will focus on breakfast, fellowship, physical exercise, and fun. Because we will be riding on streets you must be at least 18. ••• You will need the following: a bicycle in safe working condition, a little money for breakfast and a helmet (no helmet, no ride for you). Email Bob McDonald at rcmmcd@comcast.net to be included on the PPP email list.

Elderberries The Elderberries annual picnic will take place Thursday, July 1 at 4:30PM at the Mansion at Oak Hill, 5801 E 116th Street. Carmel, IN. This is an outdoor (tent) catered picnic and the cost is $10/person. Back by popular demand will be the Witch Hazel Valley People Band with Bill Bailey, playing a variety of nostalgic country/ western swing. Be sure to contact Adra Wheeler at 2534914 or 846-3404 for reservations. Euchre game, Saturday July 17, will be held in the Parlor at 7PM. We ask that you bring a snack to share. A donation of $1/person is suggested for prize fund. As always, you are encouraged to bring a guest. You may contact Adra Wheeler at 253-4914 or 846-3404 if further information is needed.

Are you interested in building interfaith friendships through service? If so, this is the volunteer opportunity for you! St. Luke’s and Congregation Beth-El Zedeck are partnering through the Interfaith Hunger Initiative to create a garden at Fox Hill Elementary. The crop will be distributed to needy Fox Hill families during the school year, and through a food pantry when school is not in session. Volunteers are needed to tend the garden during the summer and to harvest and distribute the food as needed. Volunteer as much or as little time as you can on your own schedule. SPORTS St. Luke’s Bowling League

Volleyball

Do you have a little “spare” time on Monday nights? Join the St. Luke’s Bowling League. Hokey? Yeah, maybe a little, but it’s fun. We get to wear funny looking shoes and it’s such stress release. You get to throw a ball at pins and try to knock them down. WOW!! Throwing things and you’re cheered for. It’s a wonderful time to “strike” up friendships with other St. Luke’s members. It doesn’t matter if you’re good or not. No one cares, really. Sign up with a four-person team of your own, or you can join an existing team. We play Monday nights at 6PM at the Woodland Bowl (96th and Keystone) September-April and would love to have you. Contact Kathy Alexander at alexanderk@stlukesumc.com or Jason Rose at jkcrose@aol.com for information or to sign up.

Get ready for volleyball! Coed teams of six to eight players are forming now for matches that will begin on Monday, September 13. Matches will be played on Monday evenings in the Great Hall through next April. For a bargain price of just $20 per player, you get three seasons of fun, fellowship and a little exercise too. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome to join the fun. Play is competitive but friendly —no spiking or over-hand serves. Get a group of friends together and join the fun this fall. For more information or to register as a team or individual, contact Brent Scott at 875-9382 or brentsco@comcast.net.
