Café Conversations

Women’s Bible Study

Wednesdays thru December 15, 9:30-11AM in E105. The Bible: A Biography (Books that Change the World) by Karen Armstrong. As the single work at the heart of Christianity, the world’s largest organized religion, the Bible is the spiritual guide for one out of every three people in the world. It is also the world’s most widely distributed book and is best-selling, with an estimated six billion copies sold in the last two hundred years. Acclaimed historian Karen Armstrong analyzes the social and political situation in which oral history turned into written scripture, how this all-pervasive scripture was collected into one work, how it became accepted as Christianity’s sacred text, and how its interpretation changed over time. Armstrong’s history of the Bible is a brilliant, captivating book, crucial in an age of declining faith and rising fundamentalism. All are welcome to join Dr. Marion Miller, St. Luke’s Associate Pastor, as she leads class discussion.

Wednesdays thru December 15, 1-2:30PM in E105. Poetic, troubling, strange, unorthodox, courageous—all these words (and more!) describe the Old Testament book Ecclesiastes. We’ll explore the topics of vanity and meaning, wisdom and folly, wealth and poverty, toil and pleasure, as well as life and death. What did life mean all those centuries ago? What does it mean today? Facilitated by Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries.

Laying the Foundation: Introduction to Romans 4 Tuesdays, November 2-23, 7-8:30PM in E107-109. Pre-registration helpful. Childcare available upon request. The book of Romans is known for laying the foundation. It is the most complete discussion of Christian doctrine contained in one book of the Bible. You can read all four gospels and the book of Acts and still not have a good understanding of many important concepts, like salvation. We will explore together an understanding of what salvation is, the difference between Christianity and religion, what it really means to be sanctified, how Christians are supposed to behave, whether Christians continue to sin, and what to do about it if you do, and much more. You will learn how and when to use, strengthen and develop powerful gifts from God. You will discover huge differences about what Christianity is and what people today think it is. Class leader is Dr. Marion Miller, St. Luke’s Associate Pastor.

Dinner + Movie –“To Kill A Mockingbird” Wednesday, November 10, 6:30PM (Dinner)—7PM (Movie), Fellowship Hall. Pre-registration required for dinner. We’ll begin the evening with a delicious dinner of southern cuisine (please a bring a dish to share with others) followed by the movie and then discussion led by St. Luke’s Maria Blake.

Jews & Christians in Candid Conversations, PART II Tuesdays, November 2, 16 & 30, 7-9PM. SUNDAY MORNING SHORT-TERM CLASSES

To Kill A Mockingbird Book Discussion

Jesus: The Misunderstood Jew

Sunday, November 7, 11AM-Noon, Parlor. On Wednesday, November 10, Adult Ministries and the Inclusiveness Team will host a “Dinner and Movie” evening where we will watch the movie and share our thoughts and feelings regarding various life lessons we can conclude from this tireless classic. This Sunday session led by St. Luke’s Director of Adult Ministries, Terri Coe, is a quick review highlighting the story line, key characters, and issues raised within the story.

Sunday, November 21, 11AM-Noon, Parlor. Author Amy-Jill Levine, a Jewish scholar who teaches New Testament studies at Vanderbilt University Divinity School in Nashville, Tennessee, offers this resource as a unique and deeper understanding of who Jesus was and what he taught. She helps us better appreciate the culture in which Jesus grew up – the diet and dress of first-century Palestine, Jewish holidays and customs, the numerous public roles of Jewish women, and the rituals of the Temple. Levine further discusses the relationship between Jews and Gentiles as the Christian movement took root during the mid to late decades of the first century. Join Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries, as we are introduced to this popular lecturer prior to her visit to Indianapolis on Tuesday, November 30 where she will be the featured speaker for the closing session of our popular Jews and Christians in Candid Conversations series with Beth-el Zedeck and 2nd Presbyterian.

When Life Collides with Faith Sunday, November 14, 11AM–Noon, Parlor. There are times in everyone’s life when unexpected things happen, or as Rabbi Harold Kushner says, when “bad things happen to good people.” In those times, there’s a need to “make sense” out of what’s happening, especially if our faith is challenged. Sometimes all that’s needed is an opportunity to talk with someone, to vent frustration, to question God, to reexamine the connection between our faith and our expectations about the way “things are supposed to be.” All are welcome to join the conversation with Rev. Sandy Harlan.

WOMEN’S ADVENT LUNCHEON & STUDY:

Christmas Gifts that Won’t Break Thursdays, December 2, 9 & 16. Lunch: 11:30-Noon; Discussion: Noon-1PM, Parlor. Pre-registration is required by 11/ 22; cost is $25 for lunch and materials. Childcare available upon request. Do you experience stress and sometimes feel overwhelmed during the holidays? It can be easy to forget what we celebrate at Christmas. Take some time to slow down and join us for a peaceful interlude this Advent as women of all ages come together to reflect on the unbreakable gifts that God has given us: hope, love, joy and peace. We will remember God’s greatest gift, who came to us as a baby and leads us through all the days of our lives. Led by Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries, Caitlin Drouin and Jennifer Todd, St. Luke’s members.

Yes, No, or Another Alternative? Sundays, December 5, 12 & 19, 11AM-Noon, Parlor. During Advent and Christmas certain questions arise that are often not examined in detail in sermons and other educational settings. Three of those questions are: 1) Prophecies? 2) Angels? 3) Virgin Birth? They are embedded in the birth story of Jesus found in Matthew 1:18-25. They can each be answered by “yes, no, or another alternative.” Join Dr. Adolf Hansen, our Theologian in Residence, as he leads a provocative discussion of these questions, one that will leave room for your views as well as his own.

CARE MINISTRIES Support Our Troops Most of us do not know how it feels to be thousands of miles away from friends and family, especially during the holidays. Our deployed military men and women live every day separated from loved ones, missing birthdays, anniversaries and family events. Stop by the table in the West Passage on November 7 and 14, or in the front office Monday–Friday to write a card or letter of support, which be included in care packages which are prepared in another location. Donations will also be accepted for the USO programs, United Through Reading, and Operation Phone Home.

The Track Registration Please make sure you turn in your bright yellow registration form for your children up to 5th grade as soon as possible. Forms can be found at the information table at The Track (formally known as the East Wing) or outside the Narthex. Also, you can register your children on-line at www.stlukesumc.com/forms/r7x4a3. If you have questions please email us at thetrack@stlukesumc.com.

Winner’s Circle: Sunday mornings will be filled with high energy fun starting at 9:30AM in Robertson Chapel for elementary aged children (1st-5th). This year our Sunday morning curriculum will be virtue based. This means that each month students will learn about a virtue and what the Bible has to say about it. November’s virtue is Uniqueness—learning more about others so you can know more about yourself. The memory verse for November is “There are different kinds of gifts. But they are all given by the same Spirit.” 1 CORINTHIANS 12:4. Parents, be on the lookout for a “Refrigerator Door” handout that will highlight what your children are learning each week so you can be learning together.

Family Fuel

Fuel2Go Blog

If you are seeking an opportunity to be able to worship with your children, come to Family Fuel on Sunday mornings at 10:45AM in the Great Hall. This worship service is geared for kids with an emphasis on parents learning with them. Join Cammy, Mrs. F, Sam, Vinny, Grandpa Henry, Mitchell and the rest of the clubhouse gang who will help you learn why following God is always better than doing what you think is right. There is great music, lots of laughter and yes, donuts! On November 21 we will have Family Fuel in Robertson Chapel so that the Stewardship Brunch may use the Great Hall.

In a classic “Seinfeld” episode, Kramer decides to take a car for a test drive. Somehow he convinces the car salesman to try and see just how far they can drive the car after the gas light comes on, and the episode ends with them driving down the interstate, running on fumes and way past the point of no return, holding hands like Thelma and Louise. It made for great comedy, but most of us know that it’s not very funny when we’re actually running on fumes— literally or figuratively. Especially for parents, trying to balance the demands of work and family and church and all the other commitments that make up daily life— well, it's easy to get worn down.

What if I am an 11:00 attendee?? If your family normally attends 11AM worship, we ask that you bring your child to the Great Hall at 10:45. You are welcome to stay with them until worship begins at 11:00, or stay until 11:30 when your child will go to Small group after Family Fuel ends and you can go to worship to hear the sermon. If you are not able to come at 10:45, you can still bring your child to the Great Hall at 11:00 and there will be someone who can take him or her in and get them settled. The service is very laid back and we want to be flexible to your family’s needs.

4th and 5th Grade Fellowship Friday, November 5 is the Thanksgiving Celebration for all 4th and 5th graders. If you are in the 4th or 5th grade, invite a friend and join us in the Great Hall from 6-8:30PM. We will make a traditional Thanksgiving dinner together and share what we are most thankful for this year. If you have not already registered your child, please do so at www.stlukesumc.com under Children’s Ministry. If you have, then just email thetrack@stlukesumc.com and let us know your child will attend.

As part of our new fall programming, we've launched a new blog for Family Ministries here at St Luke's— http://fuel2go.stlukesumc.com. Each week, a member of our staff will post a short reflection, designed to give a little extra "fuel" mid-week just when your gas tank starts to run low. If you would like to subscribe to the blog, there's a button on the left sidebar that will allow you to register your email, so that all new posts will go straight to your email account (so you don't have to remember to check the web-site for new posts). Please pass this information on to anyone you know whom you think would appreciate the reflections. Our hope is that parents will find some encouragement in these thoughts, or maybe an insight that will help them think more strategically about their time or their family. Remember, life is an adventure—a crazy one at times— and we could all use a little fuel for the journey.

St. Luke’s Community Also, we are in need of some parent volunteers, so if you can stay, please let us know that too. Next date: December 3 at Pastor Jamalyn and Pastor Dave’s house!

Casting Call! Family Fuel is looking for one male to play the roll of Vinny. Vinny is a sports enthusiast who is always comparing life to a game. If you would like to be a part of the Family Fuel cast, please contact familyfuel@stlukesumc.com. The commitment is two performances a month with rehearsals for each one. It is a great way to meet new people and get plugged into a ministry!

GLOBAL HEALTH MINISTRIES World AIDS Day World AIDS Day was first celebrated in 1988 to raise awareness of the AIDS pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). It is observed each December 1. The Red Ribbon is the international symbol of support for people living with HIV. HIV is the virus that can lead to AIDS. AIDS is the late stage of HIV infection when the immune system is severely damaged and allows numerous opportunistic and potentially fatal diseases and conditions to overtake the body. There are over 33,000,000 people living with HIV or AIDS in the world. In Indiana, over 10,000 persons are living with HIV or AIDS. St. Luke’s members assist HIV-infected people to live productive lives in several places like Haiti, Sierra Leone, Kenya, India, South Africa and throughout Indiana. On December 1, 2010, World AIDS Day will be celebrated in Indianapolis at two community sites: the Urban League downtown, and The Church Within in Fountain Square. Both are open to the public for the celebrations and remembrances. SOCIAL JUSTICE Social Justice Commission Over the summer, the Social Justice Commission at St. Luke’s asked for feedback through an online survey to a select sample of members of our congregation on a variety of social justice themes. Three priority issues were identified: (1) poverty and economic justice, (2) education, and (3) racial equality. The mission of the Social Justice Commission is to raise awareness and understanding of current social issues and to ground them in community programs to transform the world. Following the remarkable evening with Greg Mortenson, as well as the event of Pedals for Peace in surpassing its goal to raise $50,000 to build schools and clinics in Afghanistan, the Social Justice Commission met to discern results of the survey, appreciation for past successes and begin discussion of what is next. Members of St. Luke’s are invited to participate in our next meeting scheduled for Tuesday, November 9, 7PM in Dr. Millard’s office. Please call Jayne Thorne at 846-3404, x358 to be sure we have enough seating for open discussion.
