Inspired by the book 29 Gifts: How One Month of Giving Can Change Your Life by Cami Walker, we will discover how it feels to open ourselves to authentic giving, culminating on Consecration Sunday, November 21, when we give our gift to God’s work through St. Luke’s by returning our 2011 Gratitude Cards.

MONTHLY
COMMUNION Family Fuel Launch on 10.10.10 If you are seeking an opportunity to be able to worship with your children, come to Family Fuel on October 10 at 10:45AM in Great Hall. This worship service is geared for kids, with an emphasis on parents learning with them. Join the clubhouse gang who will help you learn why following God is always better than doing what you think is right. There is great music, lots of laughter and yes, donuts! If your family normally attends 11AM worship we ask that you bring your child to
the Great Hall at 10:45AM. You are welcome to stay with them until worship begins at 11AM or stay until 11:30AM when your child will go to Small Group after Family Fuel ends and you can go to worship to hear the sermon. If you are not able to come at 10:45AM you can still bring your child to the Great Hall at 11AM and there will be someone who can take him or her in and get them settled. The service is very laid back and we want to be flexible to your family’s needs.

St. Luke’s Family Olympics October 10, 11:30AM
Can your family eat a pie in less than two minutes? Do you think you can run bases faster than any other team after spinning your head on a bat? These are just a few of the events we will be challenging families to see who will make it to the top of the podium. Start off right at 11:30AM with a lunch for champions—pizza! This is for families with children of all ages… not just preschool or elementary. Which family can out run the other in a three-legged race or apple bobbing? You never know what you will find out. Invite your friends and neighbors—it will be a great way to include new folks! If you have questions about Family Olympics 2010 or how to be involved, please email us at familyfuel@stlukesumc.com.

Faith in the City
The End of the World?
Tuesdays, October 5-26, 7–8:30PM in E105. Registration recommended. Childcare available upon request. At St. Luke’s, we envision being transformed by God and transforming the world into a compassionate, just, inclusive, Christ-like community. Through this series of conversations and community visits, we’ll expand our awareness of the many issues challenging our backyard neighbors. We will explore theological foundations of faith in action for social justice that will shape our thoughts and actions so we can respond in helpful ways. Experience the positive impact we can have as we work together for the good of all. Led by Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries, and Jayne Thorne, Director of Outreach Ministries.
Six Mondays, October 11-November 15, 7-8:30PM in E107/ 109. Pre-registration is required. Childcare available upon request. Will it happen? Will it happen when Christ returns? If so, when will that be? Will it be during our lifetime? Or will it not happen at all? How can we find reliable and believable answers to questions such as these? Is there a book of the Bible that can help us sort out what the evidence really is? Join Dr. Adolf Hansen, our Theologian in Residence, as he leads an exploration of these and many related questions that are dealt with in the book of Revelation, a document that was written near the end of the first century to churches located in seven cities in western Turkey—places that can still be visited today. Come prepared to experience hope, not judgment!

Café Conversations
Women’s Bible Study
Wednesdays beginning October 13, 9:30-11AM in E105. The Bible: A Biography (Books that Change the World) by Karen Armstrong. As the single work at the heart of Christianity, the world’s largest organized religion, the Bible is the spiritual guide for one out of every three people in the world. It is also the world’s most widely distributed book and is best-selling, with an estimated six billion copies sold in the last two hundred years. Acclaimed historian Karen Armstrong analyzes the social and political situation in which oral history turned into written scripture, how this all-pervasive scripture was collected into one work, how it became accepted as Christianity’s sacred text, and how its interpretation changed over time. Armstrong’s history of the Bible is a brilliant, captivating book, crucial in an age of declining faith and rising fundamentalism. All are welcome to join Dr. Marion Miller, St. Luke’s Associate Pastor, as she leads class discussion.
9 Wednesdays, October 27-December 15, 1-2:30PM in E105 Poetic, troubling, strange, unorthodox, courageous—all these words (and more!) describe the Old Testament book Ecclesiastes. We’ll explore the topics of vanity and meaning, wisdom and folly, wealth and poverty, toil and pleasure, as well as life and death. What did life mean all those centuries ago? What does it mean today? Facilitated by Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries.
4 Tuesdays, November 2-23, 7-8:30PM in E107-109. Pre-registration helpful. Childcare available upon request. The book of Romans is known for laying the foundation. It is the most complete discussion of Christian doctrine contained in one book of the Bible. You can read all four gospels and the book of Acts and still not have a good understanding of many important concepts, like salvation. We will explore together an understanding of what salvation is, the difference between Christianity and religion, what it really means to be sanctified, how Christians are supposed to behave, whether Christians continue to sin, and what to do about it if you do, and much more. You will learn how and when to use, strengthen and develop powerful gifts from God. You will discover huge differences about what Christianity is and what people today think it is. Class leader is Dr. Marion Miller, St. Luke’s Associate Pastor.

SUNDAY MORNING SHORT-TERM CLASSES
When Life Collides with Faith Sundays, October 10 & November 14, 11AM–Noon, Parlor. There are times in everyone’s life when unexpected things happen, or as Rabbi Harold Kushner says, when “bad things happen to good people.” In those times, there’s a need to “make sense” out of what’s happening, especially if our faith is challenged. Sometimes all that’s needed is an opportunity to talk with someone, to vent frustration, to question God, to reexamine the connection between our faith and our expectations about the way “things are supposed to be.” All are welcome to join the conversation with Rev. Sandy Harlan.
To Kill A Mockingbird Book Discussion Sunday, November 7, 11AM-Noon, Parlor. It’s the 50th anniversary of this thought-provoking Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. On Wednesday, November 10, Adult Ministries and the Inclusiveness Team will host a “Dinner and Movie” evening where we will watch the movie and share our thoughts and feelings regarding various life lessons we can conclude from this tireless classic. This Sunday session led by St. Luke’s Director of Adult Ministries, Terri Coe, is a quick review highlighting the story line, key characters, and issues raised within the story.
Jesus: The Misunderstood Jew Sunday, November 21, 11AM-Noon, Parlor. Author Amy-Jill Levine, a Jewish scholar who teaches New Testament studies at Vanderbilt University Divinity School in Nashville, Tennessee, offers this resource as a unique and deeper understanding of who Jesus was and what he taught. She helps us better appreciate the culture in which Jesus grew up – the diet and dress of first-century Palestine, Jewish holidays and customs, the numerous public roles of Jewish women, and the rituals of the Temple. Levine further discusses the relationship between Jews and Gentiles as the Christian movement took root during the mid to late decades of the first century. Join Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries, as we are introduced to this popular lecturer prior to her visit to Indianapolis on Tuesday, November 30 where she will be the featured speaker for the closing session of our popular Jews and Christians in Candid Conversations series with Beth-el Zedeck and 2nd Presbyterian.
The Seven Cities of the Book of Revelation Sundays, October 17, 24 & 31, 11AM-Noon in the Parlor. There are seven historical locations in western Turkey that had communities of Christians living there near the end of the first century. These sites were photographed by Dr. Adolf Hansen, our Theologian in Residence, who will share these images, together with interpretive commentary from the first three chapters of Revelation.

On 10/10/10 there will be a worldwide awareness day to focus attention on this problem. Go to www.350.org to see inspiring pictures from last year’s event. The St. Luke’s Green Ministry will be participating in the Family Olympics on 10/10/10 and planting trees on the east side of the Daylily Labyrinth as our part in 350.org. Anything you can do to lower your carbon footprint on 10/10/10 and every other day will make a difference.
The Green Ministry wishes to thank Scott Semester and Connie Szabo Schmucker for their work in acquiring and installing new bike racks on the north side of the building. Now you can ride your bike to church and have a safe, visible place to secure it.

Minnietta will share experiences from her own life and encourage others to share theirs as we experience God’s calling. Putting a Face on African Women: Personal Stories from Kenya, Ethiopia & Sierra Leone Ask yourself: • What is it like to live as a child or woman in Kenya, Ethiopia and Sierra Leone? • What education, health, sexual, safety and cultural issues do they face? • With very limited resources how do they creatively deal with their challenges? • How are we and can we in Indiana be a supportive community for our African sisters? Get some insights from women who have worked in these countries. MONDAY, OCTOBER 4 - Ellen Daniels-Howell on the Umoja

Africa. One of the challenges rural Ethiopian young women face is obstetric fistula, a very damaging condition that results from being in unattended labor for days. You will hear about the people and organizations who are helping these young women overcome great odds on their road to recovery.

Current study is The Great Emergence by Phyllis Tickle followed by the DVD series "Countering Pharaoh's Production—Consumption Society Today" featuring Old Testament scholar Walter Brueggemann.
