SEPTEMBER 2010
MONTHLY
COMMUNION T.I.M.E. Goes “Back
to Basics”
Don’t miss our kick-off event on Sunday, September 5! When Jesus was asked what was the most important commandment, he answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (MARK 12:29-31) This fall as many are preparing for back to school, the Together In Ministry Everyday theme is going “Back to Basics—Love God, Love Your Neighbor.” During September, October and November, St. Luke’s will offer many opportunities to help you deepen your personal relationship with God, and many opportunities for you to show love to your neighbor. Offerings including classes such as Bible Basics, Disciple II, Disciple “Lite,” and “What’s Cooking? Food for the Body & Soul”; guest speakers Greg Mortenson and Beth Booram, and the Soup and Speaker Series; discussion groups on Stones into Schools, God’s Renewed Creation: UMC Bishops’ Challenge, and Putting A Face On African Women; service opportunities such as the UMW Food Pantry Collection, the Interfaith Hunger Initiative, Pedal for Peace, and a Habitat for Humanity project; and ongoing activities such as the Monday Meditation Group, Labyrinth Walk, Drum-on Circle, and Taizé Prayer Service. Look for the “Back to Basics” logo throughout this issue for related activities. For more information on these activities, see the detailed announcements in this and upcoming Communion Monthly issues.
NEW!

This year’s food drive will help support four Indianapolis food pantries: First Baptist Church, Brightwood Community Center, Fletcher Place Community Center and Vida Nueva Hispanic Ministries. Place donations in the collection bins located in the West Passage. Monetary donations are also welcome and may be dropped off in the church office. (For check donations, please write “Food Pantry” on the memo line.) Café Conversations Wednesdays, beginning Sept. 8, 9:30-11AM in E105. Join St. Luke’s Associate Pastor Dr. Marion Miller for conversations related to Philip Gulley’s newest book, If the Church Were Christian, a challenging and thought-provoking examination of the author’s vision for today’s church if Christians truly followed the core values of Jesus Christ. If the church were Christian, Gulley argues, affirming our potential would be more important than condemning our brokenness. If the church were Christian, inviting questions would be valued more than supplying answers. If the church were Christian, meeting needs would be more important than maintaining institutions. With these and seven other statements, Gulley provides a profound picture of what the church would look like if it refocused on the real priorities of Jesus. Book is available in Oasis.

The End of the World?
Retreat
Six Mondays, October 11-November 15, 7-8:30PM in E107/109. Pre-registration is required. Childcare available upon request. Will it happen? Will it happen when Christ returns? If so, when will that be? Will it be during our lifetime? Or will it not happen at all? How can we find reliable and believable answers to questions such as these? Is there a book of the Bible that can help us sort out what the evidence really is? Join Dr. Adolf Hansen, our Theologian in Residence, as he leads an exploration of these and many related questions that are dealt with in the book of Revelation, a document that was written near the end of the first century to churches located in seven cities in western Turkey—places that can still be visited today. Come prepared to experience hope, not judgment!
The Greater Indianapolis Area Emmaus Community (GIAEC) is holding its fall Walks to Emmaus. CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track Registration
Family Fuel Launch on 10.10.10
Please make sure you turn in your bright yellow registration form for your children up to 5th grade as soon as possible. Forms can be found at the information table at The Track (formally known as the East Wing) or outside the Narthex. Also, you can register your children on-line at www.stlukesumc.com/forms/r7x4a3. If you have questions please email us at thetrack@stlukesumc.com.
If you are seeking an opportunity to be able to worship with your elementary aged children, come to Family Fuel on October 10 at 10:45am in the Great Hall. This worship service is geared for kids with an emphasis on parents learning with them. Join Cammy, Mrs. F, Sam, Vinny, Grandpa Henry, Mitchell and the rest of the clubhouse gang who will help you learn why following God is always better than doing what you think is right. There is great music, lots of laughter and yes, donuts!
Small Group Leaders Needed for Early Childhood: What is a Small Group leader? A Small Group leader is someone who leads children through their Small Group time on Sunday morning. Small Group leaders help students embrace a God who is bigger than their imagination. A Small Group leader will lead the group in the weekly activities that enhance the three key teachings: God made me, God loves me, and Jesus wants to be my friend forever. A Small Group leader will be a listening ear and a smiling face to children who are struggling. A Small Group leader is a friend. If you are interested in helping become part of a Small Group’s spiritual journey (at 9:30 and/or 11:00) please contact thetrack@stlukesumc.com, or fill out a Small Group Leader form under Children’s Ministry at www.stlukesumc.com. Winner’s Circle Kick-Off: Sunday mornings will be filled with high-energy fun starting at 9:30AM in Robertson Chapel for elementary aged children (1st-5th). September 5, students will arrive and be introduced to their small group for the year. (If you are out of town for Labor Day you will get to meet your group the next week.) This year our Sunday morning curriculum will be virtue based. This means that each month students will learn about a virtue and what the Bible has to say about it. September’s virtue is RESPECT— showing others they are important by what you say and do. During September students will also be working on learning the verse from 1 PETER 2:17, “Show proper respect to everyone.” Parents, be on the lookout for a “Refrigerator Door” hand-out that will highlight what your children are learning each week so you can be learning together. 11AM Children’s Moment continues until 10.10.10: With Family Fuel on the horizon, we will continue the children’s moment in the 11AM service with students being dismissed to small groups at its conclusion. Parents will pick up their children (grades 1-3) in C123 and (grades 4-5) in C122.
If your family normally attends 11AM worship we ask that you bring your child to the Great Hall at 10:45. You are welcome to stay with them until worship begins at 11, or stay until 11:30 when your child will go to Small Group after Family Fuel ends and you can go to worship to hear the sermon. If you are not able to come at 10:45 you can still bring your child to the Great Hall at 11 and there will be someone who can take him or her in and get them settled. The service is very laidback, and we want to be flexible to your family’s needs. For our launch we are sponsoring the first ever St. Luke’s Family Olympics. Join us at Noon in the Great Hall for lunch and competitions between families. This is for families with children of all ages…not just preschool or elementary. We will see which family at St. Luke’s can out run the other in a three-legged race or pie-eating contest or apple bobbing. You never know what you will find out. Invite your friends and neighbors—it will be a great way to include new folks! If you have questions about Family Olympics or how to be involved in Family Fuel please email us at familyfuel@ stlukesumc.com.
4th and 5th grade Fellowship Begins Friday, October 1 is the first fellowship for all 4th and 5th graders. The St. Luke’s Commission on Children’s Ministries will be hosting the first annual Trunk or Treat on Friday, October 29, in the north parking lot of the church. Trunk or Treat is a safe, friendly, non-threatening (non-scary) Halloween event for young children. The north parking lot will be filled with colorfully decorated cars, trucks, mini-vans, etc., where children may come up to each trunk and receive a treat from the owners. You might even recognize some clergy who are kids at heart! The event will take place from 5-7PM, early enough for little Trunk or Treaters! The Youth of St. Luke’s will also be a part of this exciting event and will help the children enjoy the evening. The event is free.

If you are interested in being a part of the Trunk or Treaters decorated vehicles, please contact Susan Loomis at loomis620@indy.rr.com. COMMUNITY MINISTRIES Construction Ministry Continues to Grow and Serve
Fox Hill Elementary School Partnership
Construction Ministries/SAWS, now in its fifth year as a St. Luke’s Community Ministries program, builds wheelchair ramps at the homes of individuals who are in need. Last year, we built 45 wheelchair ramps here in the Indianapolis area. In fact, we have nearly doubled our ramp output every year! This year we have built 31 ramps in the first 17 weeks of our season, which puts us on pace to build 71 ramps before our season ends.
Dr. James Mervilde, Superintendent of MSDWT, presented an award of outstanding service to St. Luke’s for our work with Fox Hill Elementary School at the opening day session of 1,000 + faculty and staff assembled at North Central High School. While our first year was outstanding, we hope to have more volunteers and be more supportive in our second year. Take a look at the opportunities to help out, select one that fits your schedule and skills and join this terrific team of volunteers. A volunteer form is at www.stlukesumc.com/outreach/community/school.
We have increased our fundraising efforts so that finances do not limit the number of families in the community we can reach. And, we continually seek additional volunteers who will give their time one or more Saturdays or weekdays to help liberate individuals who are currently trapped in their homes. If you are interested in making a financial contribution or volunteering, please contact Dave Boyer (tbucket2@sbcglobal.net or 251-1094) or Tara Lineweaver (tgline@sbcglobal.net or 329-9189).

Garden Unplugged will use elements familiar to Garden worship services—modern music you’d hear on the radio, and video clips. The essence of the service is the opportunity for participants to be involved in dialogue as part of the service. Dialogue is based on thought-provoking questions relevant to the service that can be discussed with those around your table and then become part of the service. The services are 35 minutes long, and coffee and muffins are available. For more information, please email Stan Abell at abells@stlukesumc.com.
GLOBAL HEALTH MINISTRIES Fox Hill Community Garden The harvest is coming in at the Fox Hill community garden and we need your help! Volunteer as much or as little time as you can on your own schedule. No prior experience is required. If interested, contact Kathy Mayberry at kdsmayberry@yahoo.com or (317) 816-0167.

GREEN MINISTRIES God’s Renewed Creation – UMC Bishops’ Challenge In the fall of 2009 the Council of Bishops of the United Methodist Church issued a pastoral letter titled “God’s Renewed Creation: Call to Hope and Action.” They asked if people of good will around the world will confront global threats to God’s good creation. This six-session study is designed to facilitate conversations and action related to the issues raised in that Pastoral Letter. The study challenges participants to look at their congregations and communities and to take actions that will contribute to a healthier and more peaceful planet. The Bishops have made their pledges and now we are challenged to do the same. See www.hopeandaction.org. Tuesdays, September 14-October 19, 7-8:30PM in E212. Registration required, no fee. Led by Amy Barnes.
Green Ministry Award The Green Ministry wishes to thank everyone who has been eating locally this summer. You still have time to visit a Farmers’ Market, try a Meatless Monday menu with all the wonderful vegetables available, or ask your favorite restaurant or grocery store if they buy locally. Forty adventuresome people attended the Green Ministry’s First Annual Locally Grown Pitch-In on July 24 and had a wonderful time trying new dishes including tomato chocolate chip cookies.

LATER@ST. LUKE’S Mission Possible Kids MPKids is a national program within the United Methodist Church structure. The program is designed for grades 1-5. Its mission is to empower kids to change the world through missions, and the excitement and focus of our kids—and the support from their parents—is quite a demonstration that this hands-on program has and will continue to make tangible differences in the lives of others. This vibrant program is an outgrowth of Later@St. Luke’s and is the first chapter in the Midwest. Each mission is designed to help children fully learn and understand how to be “Special Agents” by doing God’s work— and having fun doing it. Last year our Special Agents touched over 3000 lives locally and around the world, including Iraq, Africa, South Dakota, Russia and Haiti. Seventeen agents were promoted the first semester, and 24 the second semester. As our numbers continue to grow, we invite volunteers to experience the joys of kids on a mission… learning to make a difference and displaying the sheer delight of having done so. For more information, contact Dr. Marion Miller at millerm@stlukesumc.com.
Mission Possible Kids is now gearing up for take off, and this year’s mission opportunities promise to impress even the most daring agent. • Registration for Special Agents started August 15. • Registration for new recruits also took place during these times; however, new recruits are accepted at any time throughout the program year. A fee of $20 (which includes an official MPKids T-shirt and a lifetime membership) is required for new recruits. • Agents and new recruits will be debriefed for their first mission on September 12, at 5PM in the Program Headquarters, located in E107/109. • Parent Orientation will be held on September 12 at 5PM in Fellowship Hall.

SOWERS Sowers’ Fall Plant Sale September 12 In mid-summer most of us slow down the pace of gardening and enjoy the results of our earlier efforts. During this year’s long season, St. Luke’s Sowers’ members have identified plants in their garden that they want to thin out or replace. Mid- to late August through September is a good time to transplant. The cooler nights help the plant become established before the first frost. Another advantage of fall planting is that you remember where you want to add something. Stop by our tables in the northwest passage to see a variety of perennials that have been proven winners in our gardens. We will also have grasses and tree starts. The sale is from 8:15am-Noon.
SPIRITUAL LIFE CENTER To pre-register for a class, go to www.stlukesumc.com/getinvolved/classes, or contact DeAnna Moran at 317-846-3404 x367 or morand@stlukesumc.com. Oasis = Oasis Bookstore and Gift Shop located inside St. Luke’s.

CONVERSATION ABOUT
Putting a Face on African Women:
Religion, Meaning, Ethics & Ideas
Personal Stories from Kenya, Ethiopia & Sierra Leone Ask yourself: • What is it like to live as a child or woman in Kenya, Ethiopia and Sierra Leone? • What education, health, sexual, safety and cultural issues do they face? • With very limited resources how do they creatively deal with their challenges? • How are we and can we in Indiana be a supportive community for our African sisters? Get some insights from women who have worked in these countries.
Where can you find discussion about religion in America, the wisdom of Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, the effect of torture on democracies, or how TV shows are modern-day parables? These topics and many more are discussed every Sunday morning in the Spiritual Life Center, 9:30-10:30AM. The time together is based on the American Public Media show “Speaking of Faith” (www.speakingoffaith.org). Meet new people, learn about current trends and ideas and energize yourself for the week to come. Led by Betty Brandt. NEW PERSPECTIVES TO DISCUSS The Great Emergence See information on this class/discussion in the Adult Ministries section, page 4.

Africa. One of the challenges rural Ethiopian young women face is obstetric fistula, a very damaging condition that results from being in unattended labor for days. You will hear about the people and organizations who are helping these young women overcome great odds on their road to recovery. MONDAY, OCTOBER 18 - Barbara Hale on Sierra Leone, West
Africa: Operation Classroom, UMCOR, the Women’s Center. West African women face problems of discrimination and poor health care. Barb will share an interview with an educator and talk about training, education and skills needs. Each evening begins at 6:30PM in Fellowship Hall with a hospitality hour. Come experience the flavor of the three African countries—food, music, books, crafts, colors, pictures and opportunities to support projects that will enrich the lives of our African sisters. Presentation and discussion, 7-9PM. Picturing the Face of Jesus "When I really bring others into my innermost being and feel their pains, their struggles, their cries in my own soul, ...then I have compassion." —HENRI NOUWEN Come join other women on Monday, September 13 from 6:30-8PM in the Parlor for “Compassion: A Journey for Your Heart & Soul.” Beth Booram, author of Picturing the Face of Jesus, will lead us on a journey to explore Jesus' face of compassion through art contemplation, gospel storytelling and imagining prayer. Seating is limited, please contact Lori Chambers at 696-5965 or umw@stlukesumc.com to reserve your place. Compassion is the gift of empathic presence—a profound healing agent in our world today. But how do we become compassionate people, able, as Henri Nouwen suggests, to bring others into our innermost being, feeling their pain and struggles? We must first experience compassion—the empathic presence of Christ in the midst of our own pain and struggles.

No reservation necessary, come when you can. “Black Indians – An American Story” Friday, October 29, 7PM, Fellowship Hall This movie brings to light a forgotten part of America’s past—the cultural and racial fusion of Native and African Americans. Narrated by James Earl Jones, this presentation explores what brought the two groups together, what drove them apart, and the challenges that they face today. From the Atlantic Seaboard to the Western Plains, family memories and historical highlights reveal the indelible mark of this unique ancestry and its continuing influence throughout the generations. Join representatives of the Black Indian Community for discussion session. “Code Talkers” Friday, November 5, 7PM, Fellowship Hall This is a movie about the “Code Talkers”—some 400 in all —who fought in every major engagement in the Pacific during World War II. The language of their ancestors was an effective code that was quick to transmit and decipher but one that enemy Japanese forces could not break. Join American Indians, veterans and American Indian academic historians for a discussion after the movie. Popcorn and drinks will be provided.
