Tell Your T.I.M.E. Story Did you and your family have a ton of fun volunteering for part of a T.I.M.E.-sponsored activity? Maybe your kids pitched in on the Mystery Trip to Fletcher Place Community Center, or you got involved on a regular basis with an organization as a result of volunteering on Servant Day… Or did you learn something especially meaningful as a result of a class you took when we were focusing on Peace & Reconciliation, or Poverty &

Socioeconomic Justice, or Education & Literacy? Did you develop a new habit when we were Caring for Creation, or make a new friend when we were Creating Community? We’ve heard of tons of memorable experiences from members of all ages. Stop by the T.I.M.E. Video Booth, located at the east end of the Narthex near the stained glass window, to record your T.I.M.E. memory. Duck into the booth, hit Record, and answer the questions that we’ll have posted for you—it’s that easy! We’re hoping to capture some great stories to integrate into future promotional materials. But don’t worry—we’ll ask for your permission first.

Welcoming the Fuquays Whenever there is a new addition to a family—whether a new child, a new in-law or a new puppy—everyone is very excited to meet them as quickly as possible. Our new Senior Pastor, Rob Fuquay, is no exception. We understand that everyone at St. Luke’s is eager to meet and welcome Rob and his family. While we certainly want our congregation to meet the newest members of our church family, you can understand that meeting all of your new 6000 “relatives” in short order can be a bit overwhelming. To make this part of our ongoing transition as smooth as possible, the St. Luke’s Staff Parish Committee and Governing Board, as well as the St. Luke’s staff, are asking your patience and assistance: Please join us in respecting the Fuquays’ time during these early months of joining our family and becoming acquainted. This fall, there will be a few large group events offering the opportunity to meet Rob. In order to allow space for Rob and his family to breathe deeply, to take in their new surroundings, new school, new life, we ask that invitations to small group gatherings be held until 2012. As the new year approaches, there will be opportunities to include Rob in other varied events and activities. In the meantime, please know that our desire is for Rob and St. Luke’s to be in partnership for a long time—a marathon

rather than a sprint—so there will be plenty of time to get to know Rob as we go the distance together in faith and fellowship. Rob will deliver his first message as our Senior Pastor on Sunday, August 28 at the 8:15, 9:30 & 11AM services. Your first opportunity to say hello in person will be at the All-Church Pitch-In Picnic that same day from 12:45-3:30PM at Northern Beach in Carmel. (Tickets for the picnic are available at www.stlukesumc.com). As you can imagine, Rob will then dive into the responsibilities of Senior Pastor of a large church, focusing at first on preaching, administration, the annual fund campaign and celebrating Christmas, all the while gradually becoming familiar with new faces, new names and new ways of going about business as usual—both for him and for us. If you’d like to welcome the Fuquays prior to having the opportunity to meet them, please participate in our Letter Shower. Send a message to Rob and his family (wife Susan and daughters Julie, Sarah and Anna) c/o St. Luke’s and we’ll make sure they receive them. Thank you in advance for your patience, your assistance, and your deep love and commitment to St. Luke’s. We know the Fuquays will soon feel at home as the newest members of the family.

ADULT EDUCATION To pre-register for a class, go to www.stlukesumc.com/getinvolved/classes, or contact DeAnna Moran at 846-3404 x367 or at morand@stlukesumc.com. Oasis = Oasis Bookstore and Gift Shop located inside St. Luke’s.

Café Conversations Wednesdays, Beginning September 7, 9:30–11AM in E105. Speaking Christian: Why Christian Words Have Lost Their Meaning and Power—and How They Can Be Restored is the newest work of author Marcus Borg. This retired Hundere Chair of Religion and Culture at Oregon State University shares that for many, Christianity has become an unfamiliar language. He contends that what we mean when using words and concepts related to our faith today is very different from what they meant originally. Has our language become a stumbling block to others? Why did this happen? How do we develop something different that is true to its original roots yet is attractive enough to draw into conversation today’s men, women, children, and youth seeking faith? Come discuss this book with others in preparation of Dr. Borg’s visit to the Christian Theological Seminary and St. Luke’s the weekend of October 7-9. Book may be purchased in Oasis Bookstore. Class facilitator is Dr. Marion Miller, St. Luke’s Associate Pastor.

Disciple I: An Introduction to the Bible Mondays, September 12-May 12, 2012 (with holiday breaks), 7–8:30PM in E105. Pre-registration recommended; childcare available upon request. This 34 week study of the Bible covering approximately 70% of the scriptures from Genesis to Revelation is excellent for those beginning to study the Bible as well as for those who would like a refresher course regarding the overall content of the scripture. Learn and grow through group discussions, video presentations, and weekly study assignments. A class workbook is available in Oasis bookstore. Class facilitators are Rev. Marsha Hutchinson, St. Luke’s Associate Pastor, and Rev. Dan Motto, retired UM pastor.

Disciple IV: Under the Tree of Life Wednesdays, September 14-May12, 2012, 7-8:30PM in E105. Pre-registration recommended, childcare available upon request. Study the writings of the Old Testament, including Ruth, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and the Song of Solomon. New Testament lessons include scriptures from the Gospel of John, 1, 2, 3 John, James, Jude and Revelation. Workbook is available in Oasis Bookstore. Class coleaders are Dr. Michael Condit and Gary Larsen, St. Luke’s members. FOR THOSE WHO HAVE COMPLETED DISCIPLE I.

The First Thousand Years of Christianity Tuesdays, September 13-November 22, 7-8:30PM in E105. Pre-registration recommended, childcare available upon request. Explore the growth of Christianity from the time of the crucifixion of Jesus to the Crusades using resource material from A&E’s television program, “Christianity: The First Thousand Years.” Discover how the New Testament was shaped, how pagan festivals were transformed into Christian holidays, and how modern discoveries shed new light on the dawn of Christianity. Class co-leaders are Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries, and Dr. Michael Condit, St. Luke’s member.

Where Do We Go from Here? Wednesdays, September 14-October 19, 7-8:30PM in Fellowship Hall. Pre-registration recommended, childcare available upon request. Heaven and hell? Life after death? The end of the world? Many of us have more questions than answers concerning these subjects. Movies, books and songs convey "this opinion" or "that theory." How can they all be based in scripture, yet be contradictory. What do you think about these issues? If you have questions or just a healthy curiosity about these topics, then join members of St. Luke’s staff as well as Dr. Ronald Allen from Christian Theological Seminary, and Mr. Donald E. Knebel, partner with Barnes and Thornburg LLP, for conversations around “Where Do We Go from Here?” Numerous references will be cited, but two books of interest are Love Wins by Rob Bell and The Life of Jesus for Today by Ronald J. Allen.

Women’s Bible Study Wednesdays, September 14-November 16, 1-2PM in E105. Questions God Asks Us. We often look to the Bible as the book of answers. How often, though, do we consider the challenging questions God asks? Author Trevor Hudson notes that Jesus was asked 183 questions in the Gospels but directly answered only three. In Questions God Asks Us, we're encouraged to focus on the quest rather than a resolution. "I thought the Bible existed to give me solutions to my everyday concerns and dilemmas," writes Hudson. "Then I realized I might be approaching God and the Bible from the wrong direction. Questions God Asks Us offers a fresh approach for personal devotions and a unique discussion tool for Bible study. It's sure to bless anyone longing for a meaningful, growing relationship with God. Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries, is class facilitator.

SUNDAY MORNINGS

Discovering “Our” Story Within “The” Story OLD TESTAMENT Sundays, September 11-October 16, 9:30-10:30AM in E212. Gain a “big picture” view of the Biblical story that lays a foundation for understanding the Old Testament. Learn key people, places, events and concepts. Discover how this greater story connects with our lives and influences our role of passing on the faith from one generation to another. Class leader is Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries.

Heaven, Hell, Life after Death Sundays, September 11-October 16, 11AM-Noon, Parlor. When we think about some of the most puzzling questions we have as humans, oftentimes we think about those revolving around eternity and what happens when we die. In the last year there’s been much discussion in churches, societies, religious institutions and restaurants around this very topic… heaven, hell and life after death. In this sixweek series, we’ll be exploring six viewpoints through various books and visual media and compare those viewpoints to what is found in the Bible. The hope is that when you walk away from this class you’ll have a better understanding of the subject so you can formulate your own opinion. Books and films to be cited include: Love Wins by Rob Bell, Erasing Hell by Francis Chan and Preston Sprinkle, 90 Minutes in Heaven by Don Piper, “Lost: The Final Episode,” “What Dreams May Come” starring Robin Williams, and “Field of Dreams” starring Kevin Costner. Class leader is Chris Thornsberry, Associate Director of Adult Ministries.

Parents’ Night Out A REMINDER: Now through August 21, elementary-aged

kids will continue to worship with their parents until the Children's Moment when they will join the staff and leaders for small group activities. Parents may pick up their children in E107/109 and in E108 after the 11AM service. Preschool children will go to their classrooms at the beginning of the 9:30 and 11AM worship.

Need a night out? Join PNO—Parents’ Night Out, the babysitting co-op. We are now signing up for the 2011-2012 year. Program takes place in the children's wing on the second Saturday of the month starting in August from 5:309PM. It runs August to June with the exception of July and December. Parents volunteer two Saturdays to sit with kids, get eight nights out. Cost per family is $25 to cover snacks and miscellaneous expenses. For information please email Lisa Jankowski or Lisa Sims at stlukespno@gmail.com or call Lisa at 513-4146.

The Track Registration Parents—as you are registering your children for everything under the sun this August… why not add Sunday morning small groups to your list! Please register your children on-line at www.stlukesumc.com/children/sundaymorning. If you have questions please email us at thetrack@stlukesumc.com.

Winner’s Circle Kick-Off On August 21 we will begin Winner’s Circle again! Sunday mornings will be filled with high-energy fun starting at 9:30AM in Robertson Chapel for elementary-aged children (kindergarten-5th grade). Students will be placed in their small groups at that time. Our August virtue is Grace—getting something great that you don’t deserve. For our 11:00 students—please come to C123 at 11:00 for your small group experience. We are looking forward to seeing everyone and growing closer together.

Volunteers Needed We are in need of Small Group leaders for all ages from Preschool through 5th grade. Leading a Small Group will offer you an opportunity to not only connect with children, but also help them connect with each other and build community. We are looking for adults who are willing to be a consistent person in the children's lives. If you are interested in investing your time in our kids, please contact thetrack@stlukesumc.com.

Family Fuel Launch on August 28 If you are seeking an opportunity to worship with your elementary aged children, come to Family Fuel on August 28 at 10:45AM in Robertson Chapel. Family Fuel is the worship service where kids bring their parents to worship. Join Cammy, Mrs. F, Sam, Vinny, Grandpa Henry, Mitchell and the rest of the clubhouse gang. In the fall Family Fuel is moving to a "once-a-month" format. We will always have Family Fuel the last Sunday of the month. This format will give us an opportunity to truly “blow out” the service and make it an awesome experience for families. While we’ll “GO BIG” on one Sunday of the month, on the other Sundays we will intentionally “go small” in order to offer small groups and activities for families to connect with each other. Also during those weeks, parents will receive videos via email to help keep the virtue in the front of their minds and families. There will be “Que Boxes” available for parents with activities included for your family to work on all month, and CDs for your family to listen to in the car. We are excited to continue our work with parents!

COMMUNITY MINISTRIES School Supply Collection

Fox Hill Elementary School Partnership

Due to last year’s minimal response to our annual collection, and after discussion with our recipient organizations, we have decided not to conduct an official school supply collection this year. Some funds are available to distribute to each of the groups that had received supplies in the past. If you have purchased supplies to donate, there is a wooden box in the West Passage near the main office where you may drop them off. They will be donated to World Missions teams to take on mission trips. Thank you.

We are so grateful for our regular St. Luke’s volunteers who join us every week throughout the school year, but opening school is a gigantic undertaking and we can use all the help we can get! School begins on Wednesday, August 17 at 8AM. Below are listed all the jobs that help to make for a smooth opening of school. We appreciate your willingness to help.

Construction Ministry St. Luke’s Construction Ministry builds wheelchair ramps for special needs situations in the Indianapolis area. We partner with Second Presbyterian Church and work as a team each Saturday to design, build and assemble ramps. Referrals come from the Indiana Council on Aging as well as other social service agencies. Priorities are given to handicapped clients who have no means of getting in and out of their homes. To volunteer or for more information, please contact Dave Boyer tbucket2@sbcglobal.net or 2511094, or Tara Lineweaver at tgline@sbcglobal.net or 3299189.

GREEN MINISTRIES St. Luke’s Second E-Waste Recycling Event

Bring “Locally Grown” Dish to All-Church Pitch-In

St. Luke's will host a community electronic waste recycling event on Saturday, August 27, 9am-1pm in the front parking lot. You may bring anything with a cord to be safely recycled by WorkForce Inc. Beginning January 1, 2011, Indiana households, public schools, and small businesses are no longer able to mix unwanted computer monitors, computers, televisions, printers, computer peripherals (such as keyboards and mice), DVD players, video cassette recorders or fax machines with municipal waste that is intended for disposal at a landfill or intended for disposal by burning or incineration. This disposal prohibition can be found in Indiana Code 13-20.5. Everything with a cord must be recycled! For a complete list of what can be recycled at this event go to www.stlukesumc.com. Tell your friends and neighbors!

The Green Ministry encourages you to bring a dish with at least one “locally grown” ingredient to the T.I.M.E. All Church Pitch-In Picnic on Sunday, August 28. You do not have to have grown the ingredient yourself—lots of Farmers’ Markets are available! Details about the picnic on page 1. When you get to the picnic, look for the colorful decorations to put on your dish to indicate it is “Locally Grown.”

Collapsible, Ecologically Safe, Reusable Bottles

Our ministry leadership team meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Next meeting is August 10, 5:30-7PM in E213 and welcomes new people to the discussion. Contact Sharon Chambers at sharon.chambers39@comcast.net or 317-578-7502, or just show up.

The group that brought you THE Reusable Green Shopping Bags will introduce a new green product at the T.I.M.E. Fair on Sunday, August 21. Stop by the Green Ministry table to say hello and check them out.

What Did You Say? If you find yourself saying that more frequently than you used to, then stop by the Free Hearing Screening on Sunday, August 7, and Sunday, October 2 from 9-11AM in C110. Hearing loss is one of the most common chronic health care problems facing older adults. More than 55 million Americans are estimated to suffer from hearing loss that is significant enough to have a debilitating effect on communication, and 80% of that group is undiagnosed or untreated. As our population continues to age, the problem of hearing loss continues to grow. Recent studies show that up to 50% of Baby Boomers are experiencing significant hearing loss as much as 20 years earlier in life than prior generations. What about you? Have your hearing checked for free, courtesy of St. Luke’s Health Ministries.

INCLUSIVENESS MINISTRY Servant Day The third annual Servant Day, coordinated by the Inclusiveness Team, will be Saturday, August 6. Join over 300 St. Luke’s members who enthusiastically disperse throughout the community to engage in service projects. This is an excellent way to meet new friends while engaging in an activity that benefits others. There is something for everyone—from letter-writing campaigns to cheer and encourage those in the military, to helping teachers at two Washington Township schools prepare for the opening of school, to more vigorous outdoor activities. The day will start at 8AM with breakfast generously provided by the Stephen Ministry. After a prayerful send-off, teams will go to the various locations to work until 12:30PM or later, if time allows. Sign-up tables will be in the West Passage on July 31. Descriptions of each project will be available at the registration tables. Mark your calendars, and plan to join us for this important event. Questions? Contact Maria Blake at 293-3156, or mariawblake@yahoo.com. We look forward to seeing you... but if you can’t attend and have a Servant Day t-shirt, please recycle by bringing your clean shirt to the Communications Center for re-use. Thank you.

Race Relations Dialogue-to-Change Circles This fall all around our city, diverse groups of 10-12 people will gather for open and respectful discussion about race and racism followed by an action plan that will move our community toward becoming free of bias and structural racism. St. Luke’s will be hosting sessions on six Mondays from September 12-October 17 from 6-8PM. You can participate by contacting Jayne Thorne at thornej@stlukesumc.com.

LATER@ST. LUKE’S Imagine a place where God is seen and heard through expressions of movement, media and music—come worship at Later@St. Luke’s on Sunday evenings at 6PM in Robertson Chapel. Hear contemporary Christian, gospel and jazz music featuring the Later Band and Vocals, along with a challenging and thought-provoking message. Later on the Lawn 2011 Later@St. Luke’s, in collaboration with Children’s Ministries, presents our annual Later on the Lawn and Backpack Blessing on Sunday, August 7 at 5PM in the Great Hall. Come out and bring the whole family for Family Fuel Lite as well as plenty of good food (a small donation will be welcomed to help defray the cost of the food). St. Luke’s clergy will be on hand to bless every backpack in sight, so please bring your family and friends—and their backpacks! You will be energized by the great music presented by the Later Band and Vocals.

YOUTH MINISTRIES Register for any event at www.stlukesumc.com/youth. OUR MISSION: To welcome all youth and families into loving, Christ-centered

relationships where they can get in tune with God's amazing love and be empowered to transform the world!

Youth Ministry Summer Overview During the summer months when many of our students are out of school, students are at camps, families are on vacations, and we are on mission trips, our youth ministry relaxes a little from our normal ministry schedule. Even though our ministry schedule changes, we find that it’s a great time for students to have the option of connecting to youth ministry in a more personal way. Summer time numbers are typically smaller, and students have the opportunity to check out the groups. Incoming sixth grade students are welcome in our Jr. High ministry. Incoming freshmen have the option of continuing throughout the summer in Jr. High or checking out the high school options. August 14 is the first Sunday where Freshmen will need to transition fully to Sr. High. Please take note of schedule changes that are listed; for more information always check out www.stlukesumc.com/ministries/youth.

Confirmation Ministry If you were not able to make the May parent meeting, please contact Kevin Davis so that you can catch up on information that is necessary for preparing for Confirmation in the fall. Confirmation ministry is now a one-year ministry, so we like to provide plenty of information on what we offer in the area of teaching, connecting students and the overall confirmation experience. Our next parent meeting will be held on Sunday, August 21 from 10:45-11:45AM at the Lodge. PEER GUIDES—We are looking for those who have been confirmed (8-12 grade students) to help with Confirmation in the fall. More information coming.

GRIEF MINISTRIES (H.U.G.S.)—Healing Under Grief Support. When we lose a loved one, our highly competitive society often values the “quick fix” to keep up the frenzied pace and urges us to “get over it and move on.” However, in order to journey through the grief process with grace and healthy functioning, human beings need to take time to learn about grief and the factors that complicate our natural responses.
