Tee It Up – It’s Spiritual Kick Off Time! September is a month for lots of kick offs. Many classes, book groups, UMW circles, Bible studies, youth and children’s activities go on “hiatus,” which is clearly Latin for “a three-month break in order to breathe deeply and possibly tan.” Now that you’ve breathed deeply and possibly tanned nicely, dig into this issue of the Communion Monthly to see everything that is beginning anew. It’s the perfect time for newcomers to make that first step of becoming old-timers. Get your spiritual game on this fall. On three... one, two, three, turn the page!
St. Luke’s is an open
community of Christians gathering to seek, celebrate, live and share the love of God for all creation. We envision being transformed by God and
transforming the world
into a
compassionate, just, inclusive, Christ-like community. This issue lists upcoming events September 2011 through mid-October. The deadlines for submitting announcements for the 2011 COMMUNION MONTHLY: September 5 for October issue (publishes 9/25) October 10 for November issue (publishes 10/30)

Café Conversations
Where Do We Go from Here?
Wednesdays, beginning September 7, 9:30–11AM in E105. Speaking Christian: Why Christian Words Have Lost Their Meaning and Power—and How They Can Be Restored is the newest work of author Marcus Borg. This retired Hundere Chair of Religion and Culture at Oregon State University shares that for many, Christianity has become an unfamiliar language. He contends that what we mean when using words and concepts related to our faith today is very different from what they meant originally. Has our language become a stumbling block to others? Why did this happen? How do we develop something different that is true to its original roots yet is attractive enough to draw into conversation today’s men, women, children, and youth seeking faith? Come discuss this book with others in preparation of Dr. Borg’s visit to the Christian Theological Seminary and St. Luke’s the weekend of October 7-9. Book may be purchased in Oasis Bookstore. Class facilitator is Dr. Marion Miller, St. Luke’s Associate Pastor.
Wednesdays, September 14-October 19, 7-8:30PM in Fellowship Hall. Pre-registration recommended, childcare available upon request. Heaven and hell? Life after death? The end of the world? Many of us have more questions than answers concerning these subjects. Movies, books and songs convey "this opinion" or "that theory." How can they all be based in scripture, yet be contradictory. What do you think about these issues? If you have questions or just a healthy curiosity about these topics, then join members of St. Luke’s staff as well as Dr. Ronald Allen from Christian Theological Seminary, and Mr. Donald E. Knebel, partner with Barnes and Thornburg LLP, for conversations around “Where Do We Go from Here?” Numerous references will be cited, but two books of interest are Love Wins by Rob Bell and The Life of Jesus for Today by Ronald J. Allen.
Disciple I: An Introduction to the Bible Mondays, September 12-May 21, 2012 (with holiday breaks), 7–8:30PM in E105. Pre-registration recommended; childcare available upon request. This 34 week study of the Bible covering approximately 70% of the scriptures from Genesis to Revelation is excellent for those beginning to study the Bible as well as for those who would like a refresher course regarding the overall content of the scripture. Learn and grow through group discussions, video presentations, and weekly study assignments. A class workbook is available in Oasis bookstore. Class facilitators are Rev. Marsha Hutchinson, St. Luke’s Associate Pastor, and Rev. Dan Motto, retired UM pastor.
The First Thousand Years of Christianity Tuesdays, September 13-November 22, 7-8:30PM in E105. Pre-registration recommended, childcare available upon request. Explore the growth of Christianity from the time of the crucifixion of Jesus to the Crusades using resource material from A&E’s television program, “Christianity: The First Thousand Years.” Discover how the New Testament was shaped, how pagan festivals were transformed into Christian holidays, and how modern discoveries shed new light on the dawn of Christianity. Class co-leaders are Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries, and Dr. Michael Condit, St. Luke’s member.
Disciple IV: Under the Tree of Life Wednesdays, September 14-May 23, 2012, 7-8:30PM in E105. Pre-registration recommended, childcare available upon request. Study the writings of the Old Testament, including Ruth, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and the Song of Solomon. New Testament lessons include scriptures from the Gospel of John, 1, 2, 3 John, James, Jude and Revelation. Workbook is available in Oasis Bookstore. Class coleaders are Dr. Michael Condit and Gary Larsen, St. Luke’s members. FOR THOSE WHO HAVE COMPLETED DISCIPLE I.
Women’s Bible Study Wednesdays, September 14-November 16, 1-2PM in E105. Questions God Asks Us. We often look to the Bible as the book of answers. How often, though, do we consider the challenging questions God asks? Author Trevor Hudson notes that Jesus was asked 183 questions in the Gospels but directly answered only three. In Questions God Asks Us, we're encouraged to focus on the quest rather than a resolution. "I thought the Bible existed to give me solutions to my everyday concerns and dilemmas," writes Hudson. "Then I realized I might be approaching God and the Bible from the wrong direction. Questions God Asks Us offers a fresh approach for personal devotions and a unique discussion tool for Bible study. It's sure to bless anyone longing for a meaningful, growing relationship with God. Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries, is class facilitator.
Bible 101 Tuesdays, October 4-25, 7-8:30PM in E107/109. Pre-registration recommended. Childcare available upon request. Back by popular demand! Become more comfortable using the Bible by being able to find books, chapters and verses more easily; examine and understand the various translations of the Bible; gain a brief overview of the Biblical story —identifying key people, places, and events; and explore ways Bible study can be used as a resource for daily faith living. Class facilitator is Dr. Marion Miller, St. Luke’s Associate Pastor.

Lunch with Jesus Scholar, Marcus Borg
SUNDAY MORNINGS
Sunday, October 9, Noon, Fellowship Hall. Reservations required; $15/person. Order tickets online at www.stlukesumc.com. Your printed receipt is your ticket to be shown at the door. Biblical scholar and author Marcus Borg will be preaching at all three services on Sunday, October 9, and has graciously agreed to stay for lunch to further share with us his thoughts, and to be available for a Q&A session. He is the Canon Theologian at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Portland, OR and has authored 19 books, including Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time. His most recent book is Speaking Christian: Why Christian Words Have Lost Their Meaning and Power and How They Can Be Restored. Borg will be in Indianapolis for a workshop entitled “The Critical Need for a Re-Education of the Church,” Friday, October 7-Saturday, October 8 at Christian Theological Seminary. Details and registration at 317-931-4224 or www.cts.edu/ events.
Having “Those” Conversations Sundays, October 23 and 30, 11AM-Noon in the Parlor. Pre-registration helpful. Contact Rev. Marsha Hutchinson at (317) 846-3404 x315. Sometimes we avoid having "those conversations" with loved ones and dear friends about end-of-life choices. Taking control of these choices and documenting them in advance can be a huge comfort to those we leave behind. Having a group discussion about living fully and dying well is a beginning and can actually relieve the dread of death details. Join Rev. Marsha Hutchinson for discussion regarding the difference between living wills, medical power of attorney, and a DNR order. What is hospice and palliative care? What if I want to stay at home? What if I can't speak for myself? Learn to help clergy and family by doing some of your own funeral planning. Anticipate laughter, coffee and a light breakfast.
Discovering “Our” Story Within “The” Story / OLD TESTAMENT Sundays, September 11-October 16, 9:3010:30AM in E212. Gain a “big picture” view of the Biblical story that lays a foundation for understanding the Old Testament. Learn key people, places, events and concepts. Discover how this greater story connects with our lives and influences our role of passing on the faith from one generation to another. Class leader is Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries.
Heaven, Hell, Life after Death Sundays, September 11-October 16, 11AM-Noon, Parlor. When we think about some of the most puzzling questions we have as humans, oftentimes we think about those revolving around eternity and what happens when we die. In the last year there’s been much discussion in churches, societies, religious institutions and restaurants around this very topic… heaven, hell and life after death. In this sixweek series, we’ll be exploring six viewpoints through various books and visual media and compare those viewpoints to what is found in the Bible. The hope is that when you walk away from this class you’ll have a better understanding of the subject so you can formulate your own opinion. Books and films to be cited include: Love Wins by Rob Bell, Erasing Hell by Francis Chan and Preston Sprinkle, 90 Minutes in Heaven by Don Piper, “Lost: The Final Episode,” “What Dreams May Come” starring Robin Williams, and “Field of Dreams” starring Kevin Costner. Class leader is Chris Thornsberry, Associate Director of Adult Ministries.

September 11, 2001 is forever etched in our hearts and minds. To acknowledge the tenth anniversary of that fateful day, the Interfaith Hunger Initiative, The Worship Studio and Gleaners Food Bank invite people of all faiths and spiritual journeys to come together for an interfaith service of prayers, community art, and an opportunity to make a difference for hungry people as we continue to bring hope and goodness from the ashes of tragedy. The experience will give all participants the opportunity to explore the themes of Enormity and Abundance... the enormity of the 9/11 tragedy and the abundance of humanity and selflessness we witnessed in its aftermath... the enormity of the problem of hunger in contrast to our abundance of food, resources and generosity... and the enormity of ignorance and intolerance countered by the abundance of people from different or no faith traditions willing to work together to make a difference and live in peace.

What Did You Say? If you find yourself saying that more frequently than you used to, then stop by the Free Hearing Screening on Sunday, October 2 from 9-11AM in C110. Hearing loss is one of the most common chronic health care problems facing older adults. More than 55 million Americans are estimated to suffer from hearing loss that is significant enough to have a debilitating effect on communication, and 80% of that group is undiagnosed or untreated. As our population continues to age, the problem of hearing loss continues to grow. Recent studies show that up to 50% of Baby Boomers are experiencing significant hearing loss as much as 20 years earlier in life than prior generations. What about you? Have your hearing checked for free, courtesy of St. Luke’s Health Ministries
Blood Drive Did you know: • Blood cannot be manufactured; it can only come from volunteer donors. • An estimated five million patients in the U.S. need blood every year, with many of these patients using large quantities of units. • The volume of blood transfused is increasing at the rate of six percent per year. In war and disasters, the needs rise even higher. • Adults have around 10 pints of blood in their body. One pint is given during donation. • Whole blood donors can donate every 56 days. • One pint of blood can save up to three lives. If you began donating at age 17 and donated every 56 days until you reached 76, you would have donated 48 gallons of blood, potentially helping to save more than 1,000 lives! • Every two seconds someone needs a blood transfusion in the U.S. • Platelets, critical for cancer patients, have a shelf life of only five days. • Only seven percent of people in the U.S. have the universal blood donor type, O negative. • Less than 38% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood. • Donor information is confidential. It may not be released to anyone without your written permission, except as directed by law. Help save lives at our next Indiana Blood Center Blood Drive which will be held at St. Luke’s on Sunday, October 16, before, during and after morning worship services.

Both musical AND non-musical abilities are needed to keep this thriving community “humming.” Administrative, marketing and organizational skills, as well as playing and singing skills, are needed. Contact Mark Squire to discuss where you might best enjoy serving.

The Quest for Global Healing: Educating Strategic Peacebuilders A presentation by Hal Culbertson, Executive Director of the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame. Tuesday, September 27, 78:30PM in Robertson Chapel. No registration or fee. Today's conflicts present a number of complex challenges for peace builders. Should atrocities committed during war be prosecuted or forgiven? How do highly contentious groups learn to live together? How do we rebuild economic, political, and social institutions that have been fractured by violence, corruption, and injustice? Notre Dame's Kroc Institute prepares students to address challenges such as these through a holistic approach called "strategic peace building." Mr. Culbertson will identify the key elements of strategic peace building, and describe how faculty, alumni and others are applying this approach in conflicts around the world. The Spiritual Life Center and the Spiritual Oneness Group thank Carol Ernst for arranging for her brother to come to St. Luke’s.

Theology Unplugged
Letters from Dad
We all have to earn a living, and for most of us that means we "punch the clock" somewhere. But what if work is about more than just "punching the clock?” What if we're meant to follow a calling--a vocation--from God? How can we pursue those things which stir our deepest passions and call for our greatest gifts, while still balancing those things with the need to bring home a check to pay the bills? Join us at the Rusty Bucket at 8:30PM on Wednesday, September 21 as we discuss these and other questions about life. For information, contact Matt Roop at mkroop66@gmail.com or 447-4057.
If God were to take you home today... what would your loved ones hold in their hands tomorrow that would let them know that they were the treasures of your life? Through the Letters from Dad study, you will write five specific types of letters to your loved ones, and learn what it means to leave a legacy of blessing to others. Come join us on September 13 for a kick-off dinner to learn more about how to participate. Program will run October 4December 6; please RSVP for the kick-off dinner to David Williamson at 846-3404 or williamsd@ stlukesumc.com.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN UMW Reading Group
COMING SOON—
Join us on Monday, September 26 from 7-8:30PM in the Parlor as we discuss Still Alice by Lisa Genova. This novel is a beautifully written, heartbreaking story about the devastating effect Alzheimer's has on its victims and their families. Author Lisa Genova's choice of Alice—young, in shape, and intelligent (she's a psychiatry professor at Harvard)—shows that Alzheimer's can strike anyone, not just the elderly. The book is written from Alice's viewpoint, but Genova does an excellent job of showing the effect of Alzheimer's not only on Alice, but how her family struggles with the changes in Alice. We'll have much to discuss about the struggles that many families have experienced and are experiencing with a loved one living with this diagnosis. Newcomers are always welcome. For more information, contact Jennifer Todd at jtoddosu@aol.com.
