Make Your Voice Heard The St. Luke's Visioning Task Force has been working to discern the direction God wants St. Luke's go. During the month of August, members of the congregation will be asked to complete a survey about how and why they're connected to St. Luke's. The data we gather will help us gain a greater understanding of who worships at St. Luke's and what their main motivators are for being part of the St. Luke's family. We'll combine that information with other research we've done and use it to identify four or five ministry area "thrusts" to focus on over the next five to ten years. The more information we gather now, the better able we'll be to undertake the next phase of the Visioning process: articulating a plan to support the picture of our future. Starting August 1, you will be able to access a link to the survey on our website. Links will also be sent out via the all-church e-newsletter and weekly Rev.e-lations. For those individuals who do not have a computer or who need assistance completing the survey, both will be available in the church office Monday-Friday, 9AM-5PM, and Sunday mornings. If sharing your thoughts with the Task Force isn’t incentive enough, upon completion of the survey, the survey taker will have the option to enter his/her name into a drawing for the following: iPad 2 (donated), Kindle Touch (two available) or $25 Oasis gift cards (four available). We strongly urge our congregation to participate in this important information gathering tool. If you have any questions, please email visiontaskforce@stlukesumc.com, or call the church office at 846-3404.

Our debt balance is approximately $2.67 million, as your incoming pledge payments allow us to continue this accelerated reduction. Our monthly mortgage payments are paid from the Trust God pledges received from you. We remain grateful to Salin Bank for providing our excellent mortgage financing. Due to our accelerated payments, Salin Bank recently lowered our mortgage payment each month to $16,735.

Three Simple Questions:

The Hunger Games

A Conversation Carried on Throughout History

Sundays, September 9-30,10:45AM-Noon, Luke’s Lodge. Preregistration helpful. Book available in Oasis. Back by popular demand…and expanded! Across the nation, people are discussing The Hunger Games—the characters, the plot, the comparisons to historical events and science fiction movies/novels as well as the ethics of it all. What is it about this story that captures the interest of students and adults alike? What themes express the experiences of youth and young adults in today’s society that leaders need to pay attention to? What biblical parallels can be found within The Hunger Games trilogy that may surprise readers? What does hope look like for a different world we can help shape? Join with others of all generations as we explore the questions of life raised by author Suzanne Collins, yet pondered by us all at one time or another. Led by Stephanie Eft, Associate Director of Youth Ministries and Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries.

Tuesdays, August 28, September 11 & 25, 9:30-11AM in the Parlor. Pre-registration recommended. Childcare available upon request. Book available in Oasis. Author Rueben P. Job explores three questions at the center of our faith— questions that all major religions try to answer and around which there seems to be much confusion: Who is God? Who am I? Who are we together? Discover the greatness and goodness of God, the value of every beloved child of God, and the impact we can have in the world when we live as Jesus lived. Led by Rev. Marsha Hutchinson, St. Luke’s Associate Pastor.

Why Bad Things Happen to Good People Wednesdays, September 5–October 31, 9:3011AM in E105. Book available in the Oasis. This book, authored by Harold S. Kushner, offers a very moving and humane approach to understanding life's storms. It raises many questions that will challenge your mind and test your faith regarding the ultimate questions of life and death. Kushner, a Jewish rabbi facing his own child's fatal illness, deftly guides us through the inadequacies of the traditional answers to the problem of evil, then provides a uniquely practical and compassionate answer that has appealed to millions of readers across all religious creeds. Remarkable for its intensely relevant real-life examples and its fluid prose, this book cannot go unread by anyone who has ever been troubled by the question, "Why me?" Led by Dr. Marion Miller, St. Luke’s Associate Pastor.

Women’s Bible Study Wednesdays, September 5-October 31, 1-2PM in E105. Religion and Science: Pathways to Truth. More than a dozen world experts consider how religion and science might coexist and even complement one another in the 21st Century. The nine DVD-based lessons include: Friends or Foes? The Story of a Complex Relationship; Truth in Science and Religion; God and Nature; Creation and Evolution; What Does It Mean to Be Human?; The God of Hope and the End of the World; Religion, Science, and Ethics: New Frontiers; and, Creation Care. Led by Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries.

CARE MINISTRIES

Creative Aging: Rethinking Retirement and Non-Retirement in a Changing World Sundays, September 16-30, 11AM-Noon in E213. Pre-registration helpful. Book available in Oasis. Sometimes called “the third stage of life,” retirement years can be an important time to explore spiritual dimensions, gifts and experiences, especially when retirement suddenly removes career roles and even personal identity. Our culture claims, “You can have it all.” Our bodies respond, “No…there are limits.” How do we learn to live with limits and let some things go in order to make space for new adventures, learning and life? Join Rev. Marsha Hutchinson and other “boomers” to share the journey in creative possibilities of reclaiming hidden gifts, purpose and call.

The Second Thousand Years of Christianity Wednesdays, September 19–December 12 (no class 11/21), 7–8:30PM in E105. Pre-registration recommended. Childcare is available upon request. Utilizing material produced by television’s A&E station, study the growth of Christianity from the Crusades and the Reformation to the changes of Vatican II. Each presentation is illuminated through extensive use of historical documents, commentary from renowned scholars, and video visits to the sites where history was made. Led by Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries.

Be a Stephen Minister Training classes begin Tuesday, September 4. Applications are available now in the West Passage and online. Stephen Ministry is a wonderful way to grow in your faith by serving your fellow man. Stephen Ministers meet one-on-one with people in many difficult situations. Perhaps a person would just like someone to talk to while they recover from an illness, or parent young children, or make a new life after a divorce. If you have questions, contact Mary Katherine at 846-3404 x365 or schnitzm@stlukesumc.com.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.

August at The Track Our virtue for August is CONTENTMENT. Contentment has nothing to do with how you look, what you have, where you are, or what you do. Contentment is about who you trust. Our contentment is about more than our personal happiness. It is a demonstration of our daily trust in God. Contentment is choosing to be happy with what you’ve got. Our monthly memory verse hints at the secret to being content. “I have learned to be content no matter what happens to me. I know what it’s like not to have what I need. I also know what it’s like to have more than I need. I have learned the secret of being content no matter what happens.” (PHILIPPIANS 4:11B-12A)

August at the Mini-Track The kids will be learning “God is always with me.” Their memory verse is “God is with you wherever you go.” (JOSHUA 1:9 NIV) If Pre-K kids are able to recite the memory verse to the Small Group Leader, they get a special sticker for their Pit Pass.

Volunteers Needed We are in need of Small Group Leaders for all ages for the upcoming school year. Leading a Small Group will offer you an opportunity to not only connect with children, but also help them connect with each other and build community. We are looking for adults who are willing to be a consistent person in the children’s lives. If you are interested in investing in the children of St. Luke’s, please contact thetrack@stlukesumc.com.

Time to Rev Up Your Engines! August 19 is the kick off for our 2012-13 Track events. All Preschool children will report to their new rooms for the year, and elementary will head to Winner's Circle in Robertson Chapel at 9:30 and 11:00AM. We have a special day planned including a dunk tank (guess who is in it?), and Team Fan Force United will be here with their Indy Race Car! Come get your picture taken with the car and learn about all the exciting things happening at The Track this year!

Dunk a Pastor All kids who have a parent like The Track on Facebook or follow us on Twitter before August 19 will have a chance to dunk Pastor Jamalyn in a dunk tank at the Back to School celebration Sunday, August 19. Your kids will not want to miss this chance... take action today!

Parent Information Sessions The first day of school. Whether it's the start of preschool or the start of kindergarten, it is a big moment. We are releasing our children into a new environment, entrusting them into someone else's hands to teach and shape and mold. The same thing applies for Sunday School, and we know it is a big deal when you release your children into our care. This year, we are designing programs for preschool and kindergarten families to help parents understand what it is that we're teaching and how we as a church are trying to support their efforts to raise great kids. We hope you'll join us on August 19 (for preschool parents) or August 26 (for kindergarten parents) in E107/109 during the Sunday School hour. As your children are getting settled into their new classes, you'll have the opportunity to connect with other parents and learn how to connect what they're learning here at church with your daily life at home. Please RSVP to hachm@stlukesumc.com (for preschool) or myhanda@ stlukesumc.com (for kindergarten). We look forward to seeing you and kicking off a great year together!

Family Camping Weekend—Save the Date! St. Luke’s annual Family Camping Weekend: September 2830 at Camp Tecumseh. See details on page 6.

New Check-In System We're excited to launch a new computerized check-in system (CheckPoint) in Children's Ministries. Parents should register their children in this new system in The Track area (East Passage). There will be three computer kiosks located across from the pager desk in The Track, and staff available to assist you. Once registered, the printer will produce a name badge for each child as well as a corresponding badge for the parent to use when picking up their child(ren). Parents who are missing their name badges will only be allowed to pick up their children by obtaining permission of the children's ministry staff. Volunteers will not release a child without a badge. The CheckPoint system will provide a greater level of organization during the check-in procedure, improvement in the collection of attendance data, and an increase in the efficiency of our overall administration. But most importantly, the automated system will heighten the overall security of children's ministry and increase parental confidence that each child is as safe as possible while within the walls of St. Luke's UMC.

Join the fun in serving at Fox Hill. Volunteer opportunities include direct tutoring, mentoring, and administrative help. Three Big Questions for the Frantic Family

Disciples Class for Young Couples

Families at St. Luke's come in all shapes, sizes, and makeups. One thing that seems common to us all, though, is the feeling of being stressed and over-stretched. But according to leadership expert Patrick Lencioni, what families need most is not less activity, but rather more clarity around what activities they pursue and why. Come join us on Sundays, September 9 and 23 for a two-week study based on Lencioni's The Three Big Questions for a Frantic Family. Class will be held in E107/109 from 5:30-7PM, childcare provided. See what defining your core values and top priorities can do to enhance your daily family life.

Want to learn more about the Bible? Ever thought of doing a Bible study with your spouse? This fall we'll be offering a special Disciples class for young couples to grow in their knowledge of the Bible together, led by Jim and Debbie Bushfield on 12 Tuesdays from 6:45-8PM. While Disciple is open to anyone, regardless of their knowledge level of the Bible, it does require a commitment to consistent reading during the week—on average two to three chapters of the Bible each day. In return for this commitment, what would you gain? A great group of young couples to be close friends with at church. A solid understanding of the Bible. A huge boost in your spiritual life. And a strong foundation for your marriage. Class begins August 28; those interested can contact Susan Fuquay at susanfuquay@yahoo.com, or you can register at www.stlukesumc.com.

Couples, Inc.

In October we'll be launching more small groups. Groups will be organized around a six-week study of Drs. Les & Leslie Parrott’s Time-Starved Marriage, something just about all couples struggle with. And while making time for a small group may be the last thing you think you can do if you're truly "time-starved," you'll discover through this study what happens when you choose to feed your relationship by investing your time in one another. Groups will be meeting throughout the week, in homes and at church. Please email coupleslife@ stlukesumc.com to find a group that is most convenient for you.

The "Date Night Challenge" is coming to a close! Whether you finished all four dates, or even if you missed them all, come join other couples for the "Date Night Challenge" Finale on September 15. We'll be flipping the usual dinner by starting off at the church with a dessert extravaganza from 5:30-6:30PM, then we'll be sending you out on your final date of the challenge, equipped with our biggest dares and most insightful questions of the season. Cost is $5/couple, plus $5/child for those couples needing childcare. Tickets will be sold in the West Passage later in the month, or reserve your spot online. Come finish the challenge with a bang!

New Small Group Opportunity

FELLOWSHIP Elderberries Our annual Elderberries picnic will be Thursday, August 2 at Oak Hill Mansion, 5801 East 116th St., Carmel, in the outdoor pavilion. Arrive at 4:30PM, a picnic dinner will be served about 5PM. Cost will be $10/person. Please make reservations with Adra Wheeler at 253-4914 or 846-3404. Our entertainment will be the renowned Bill Bailey and his one-man band. Bill will perform a show on percussion instruments, then have a hands-on Hambone, shakin' eggs and musical jam. Bill performs with many local bands and at the Indiana State Fair.

GREEN MINISTRIES Green Gratitude The Green Ministry wishes to thank Gary Larsen for his devotion to all the recently planted evergreens and trees that surround the daylily labyrinth. In all the dry summer weather, Gary hauls water from home in five-gallon jugs every week to make sure the new plantings survive.

E-Waste Recycling

Keep Paper/Magazines/Catalogs Coming!

St. Luke's will host a community electronic waste recycling event on Saturday, August 4, 9AM-1PM, front parking lot, as part of Servant Day. Please bring anything with a cord to be safely recycled by RecycleForce Inc. As of 1/1/2011, Indiana households, public schools, and small businesses are no longer able to mix unwanted computer monitors, computers, televisions, printers, computer peripherals (such as keyboards and mice), DVD players, video cassette recorders or fax machines with municipal waste that is intended for disposal at a landfill or intended for disposal by burning or incineration. This disposal prohibition can be found in Indiana Code 13-20.5. Everything with a cord must be recycled! For a complete list of what can be recycled at this event go to www.stlukesumc.com. Tell your friends and neighbors! Donations appreciated for TVs. Cans, bottles and cardboard also accepted.

The green and yellow Abitibi bins at the east driveway accept white and colored paper, junk mail, magazines, newspaper and catalogs. No cardboard or corrugated board. You deposited over four tons in January and St. Luke’s earned $72.60, but since then because we didn’t reach four tons each month, we have only earned about $15 per month. Please help St. Luke’s Green Ministry by bringing your paper from home and office.

Energy Audit Project Goal Is 400 Homes Perhaps you received an invitation from your energy company to have an energy audit of your home. As part of a year-long incentive program, if you register for the audit through St. Luke’s Green Ministry, St. Luke’s will receive $25 to be used in special “green” St. Luke’s projects. You will get an audit and lots of freebies. There is no pressure to buy anything. Forms are online at www.stlukesumc.com or in the main office. Please place completed forms in Betty Brandt’s mailbox or contact Sharon Chambers at sharon. chambers39@comcast.net.

GRIEF & WHOLENESS MINISTRIES WHY? "Making Sense of God's Will" Join others to begin the film series and book study, WHY?, written by Adam Hamilton, Sunday, July 29, August 5, 12 & 19 at 3PM in the Parlor. The weekly film and accompanying book will focus on the idea "Is it possible to reconcile belief in a loving and powerful God with the suffering in our world." Hamilton will ask us to reconsider the ideas that suffering must be the will of God as we wrestle with questions like "Why do the innocent suffer? Why do my prayers go unanswered? Why can't I see God's will for my life?” We welcome anyone who might be ready to consider these important questions. For more information contact Rev. Marsha Hutchinson at hutchinsonm@stlukesumc.com.

LATER@ST. LUKE’S Imagine a place where God is seen and heard through expressions of movement, media, and music—come worship at Later@St. Luke’s on Sunday evenings at 6PM in Robertson Chapel. Hear contemporary Christian, gospel and jazz music featuring the Later Band and Vocals, along with a challenging and thought-provoking message. Holy Communion is served every Sunday, along with light refreshments before and after the worship service.

Hispanic Ministry Team The Hispanic Ministry Team and Later@St. Luke’s has partnered with an organization called La Plaza. This organization has a strong interest in the well-being and vitality of the Latino community… and so do we. In collaboration with this year’s “Blessing of the Backpacks,” we are collecting backpacks for La Plaza. If you would like to bless a child with a backpack as they return to school this year, please bring your donations to the church. There will be bins designated to receive your donations. These backpacks will be filled with supplies on Servant Day (August 4) and blessed the following day at the Backpack Blessing before the final distribution.

MEMBERSHIP Become a Member St. Luke's encourages you to make a commitment to become part of our church family. Whether you've only started attending recently, or if you've been coming for years but never made your relationship with St. Luke's "official," we invite you to attend one of our Membership Coffees (tea, water and juice fans also welcome!). They are held the second Sunday of each month at 11AM in N101. Register online or by contacting Sylvia Forbes. Next date is August 5.

MUSIC MINISTRIES Have a Song in Your Heart? Music has a way of shaping our lives, our outlook, and our faith. That’s what brings people to the St. Luke’s Sanctuary… and the choir loft, where there’s a seat for every new soprano, alto, tenor and bass ready to join the ranks of dedicated singers. Now is the time to think about joining the Chancel Choir for an exciting season of song and celebration. No auditions required, just a love of music, basic music-reading skills and a willing heart. This will be a special year in the life of the Chancel Choir. In addition to worship leadership and preparing for the annual Christmas and spring concerts, singers will work on repertoire to sing during their spring tour of Italy, including performances in Rome, Venice and Assisi.

SINGLES MINISTRIES

The Chancel Choir resumes rehearsals on Thursday, August 23. Rehearsal runs from 7:30-9PM, and childcare is provided when requested. To learn more about the choir’s upcoming plans, contact Mark Squire, Director of Music Ministries, at 846-3404 x334, squirem@stlukesumc.com, or Carol Tully, Membership and Recruitment Chair, at 566-0762, tully95@earthlink.net.

Eastman Angel Project for Advent

Cindy Sas—Music Thanatology

In November 2012, St. Luke’s UMC will be featuring a show in our galleries that will explore the way various individuals interpret the same view. To this end, we want to see how different artists use their favorite mediums to express their experience of viewing the Eastman Angel, a well-known monument at Crown Hill Cemetery. You could paint her, draw her, create a print or a carving, write about her, photograph her or write a stage show about her! It may be a realistic rendering or an abstract expression, tiny or huge or any size in between. Find out how you can be part of this fun and fascinating exhibit by contacting Lorie Lee Andrews at a.lorielee@yahoo.com.

SOUP AND SPEAKER SERIES Music thanatalogy is a palliative medical modality with deep contemplative roots. Using harp and voice to provide prescriptive music, music thanatology brings beauty, intimacy and reverence to the care of the dying. Cindy is a pharmacist who combines her love of music and her interest in medicine to bring her unique gifts to the world. Her presentation will be the first of our series, taking place September 12. Part of the Soup and Speaker Series sponsored by the Spiritual Life Center and the Health Ministry. Five Wednesdays, September 12-October 10. All are welcome to come at noon for a simple lunch followed by speaker at 12:30PM.

We re-experience events in a way that gives us fresh understanding and appreciation of the richness of our lives, and see connections emerge as we tell the story of our life’s turning points. Meaningful experiences or insights from childhood and adolescence, as well as the role of a friend, mentor or guide who helped us on our way, provide rich material. A concluding exercise shows us how to draw a road map of our own journey that can serve as a guide for continuing to

UMW Reading Group Are you an extrovert—the kind of person that derives energy from being around other people? Or an introvert —someone who needs quiet/alone time to recharge and think? August will give us an opportunity to explore our quieter selves. Our selections are: Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain and The Introvert Advantage: How to Thrive in an Extrovert World by Marti Olsen Laney, Psy.D. So, join the Quiet Revolution and our discussion on Monday, August 27, from 7-8:30PM in the Parlor. Newcomers are always welcome. Childcare is available if requested one week in advance. For information, contact Jennifer Todd at jtoddosu@aol.com.

relationships where they can get in tune with God's amazing love and be empowered to transform the world!

Youth Ministry Summer Overview During the summer months when many of our students are out of school, students are at camps, families are on vacations, and we are on mission trips, our youth ministry relaxes a little from our normal schedule. Even though our ministry schedule changes, we find that it’s a great time for students to have the option of connecting to youth ministry in a more personal, intentional way and can check out our groups. Incoming sixth grade students are welcome in our Jr. High ministry. Incoming freshmen have the option of continuing throughout the summer in Jr. High or checking out the high school options. August 12 is the first Sunday where Freshmen will need to transition fully to Sr. High. To keep up to date with further hangout opportunities and fun activities, check the website at www.stlukesumc.com/ ministries/youth/srhigh or check our facebook groups: St. Luke’s UMC—Sr. High Youth and St. Luke’s UMC—Jr. High Youth.

serve. See bulletin board in the hall between Robertson Chapel and Oasis Bookstore to sign up, or call Kay Horton at 253-9833 for information. Requests for food at Fletcher Place have increased significantly and current supplies are low. The Food Pantry needs donations of oats, pasta and canned vegetables and fruits (low in sodium and sugar). Bulk quantities are acceptable and appreciated. These can be placed in drop boxes in the West Passage, please write Fletcher Place on the bags or boxes of items being donated. If a group in the church would provide one of the food groups on a regular basis, that would be very helpful. Volunteers are also needed in the thrift store, food pantry and GED preparation. Contact Larry Paxton at 873-2415 or ldpaxton@indy.rr.com, or Karen Mann at Fletcher Place, 636-3466 x4 or karen@fletcherplacecc.org.

Outreach, Inc. Our mission statement is short and simple: "Equipping and empowering homeless teens and young adults to exit street life.” We are requesting donations to purchase bus passes, GED materials, school supplies, text books, lunches, school uniforms, etc. Please make checks out to St. Luke’s and on memo line, list Outreach, Inc. ••• Our G.O.A.L. (Graduation, Occupation, Address, Lifestyle) Program supports at-risk students with a case manager who focuses on specific needs. Homeless students with no support system usually drop out of high school and stay trapped in the cycle of homelessness. Outreach developed a program to help homeless students graduate, get a job and change their life. We provide resources like advocacy, transportation to school, school lunches, textbooks, tutoring, a GED satellite classroom, even caps and gowns, help them find job openings and get transportation to interviews, assist in finding housing and helping with life-skills including budgeting and healthy living. As a result of G.O.A.L., over half of those graduating go on to college, vocational school or military service. For information, contact Jackie Reed at 332-6550 or jsrmolar @sbcglobal.net, or go to www.outreachindiana.org.

SAWs Servants at Work, building wheelchair ramps for disadvantaged folks, is looking for volunteers every Saturday. We are asked, “Just how often does a volunteer need to work?” Everyone is faced with many Saturday choices, so the answer is, “Just as often as you would like to!” Some of our wonderful volunteers only work one or two Saturdays per year. We recommend for your first time is to come the second half of a Saturday so you get to see the ramp surface completion and the happy client roll down their very own ramp to freedom. Questions? Contact Paul Snyder at psnyder1@indy.rr.com or 317-695-0585.

Refugee Assistance Ministry Most of the refugees who now live in Nora are from Burma. They have spent more than 10 years living in the squalid conditions of a refugee camp in Thailand and are now eager to become productive citizens of the United States. St. Luke's Refugee Assistance Ministry seeks to help them along that path. Work with grade school children after school or on Saturdays; befriend a young adult to help answer their many questions about how to do this or that in America; or join one of the special projects RAM undertakes. This fall, RAM will lead a program to teach refugees to fill out the necessary government forms to lead them to citizenship. Watch for announcements for this one-day program. If you are interested in learning more, pick up a brochure on RAM's bulletin board or contact Cathy Kennedy, jaycathy@aol.com. There are opportunities for all ages, abilities and time schedules.

FELLOWSHIP Elderberries Euchre The next Elderberries Euchre parties will be held Saturday, August 18 at 6:45PM in the Parlor. Please bring a snack to share. Contact Adra Wheeler at 253-4914 or 846-3404 with questions.

ReachOut ReachOut is a diverse and inclusive group within the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church community offering spiritual support and encouragement to GLBT persons. Social and recreational activities are provided to promote an atmosphere where friendships can develop and a sense of acceptance and wholeness may be experienced. All are welcome. If you, or someone you know in your family, workplace or neighborhood would benefit from a one-on-one session of grief counseling, contact Rev. Marsha Hutchinson at hutchinsonm@ stlukesumc.com. DOES NOT MEET IN THE SUMMER. Sundays, 6-7:30PM at the Lodge. AMPED is the Sunday evening time for students 6th-8th grade and the focus is around small groups. In the morning, students get introduced to the topic and connected at WIRED. Then in the evening, students dig into the topic even more within their small groups. Students experience a time of games in our activities, music, a short teaching, and small groups based on gender and grade.

WEEKLY SR.HIGH OFFERINGS (9-12th grade) We continue to meet on Sunday mornings at 9:30AM, but take a slightly different focus. Rather than working our way through a book of the Bible or lesson series, we jump into fun discussion topics like miracles, movies, current events and pop culture. With each of these, we look into what our faith has to say about them and how we can live in a way that engages the world but honors God.
